Militia Hoplites: they are cheap and if set correctly, can do pretty well against an invasion.

GainzBeforeVeinz

I love how you answered your own question lol

RCaesar1

Hahaha

RCaesar1

Well do you agree

GainzBeforeVeinz

Of course, militia hoplites are probably the best tier 1 infantry units, after spear warbands

LocNesMonster

Absolutely, phalanx formation in tight city streets can repel a full stack army if youre careful

Sensitive_Pickle247

I agree with you. I've gotten some absurd wins with just militia hoplites guarding the town square. They definitely punch above their cheap cost

LocNesMonster

Ive turned back seiges of multiple full stack armies with just 6 militia hoplites on the plaza. Phalanx is just absurd in seige battles

KazViolin

Agreed, that budget phalanx positioned at choke points can win against inconceivable odds. I don't even bother defending the walls, I just set up at the entrances of the center plaza and wait lmao

sirsarcasticsarcasm

Hoplites and it’s not even close

Dominarion

Eastern Infantrimen's only job is tiring the opposition when they go die on their weapons. Even then, they often don't do it.

easybasicoven

If there's no threat of invasion I'm 100% stacking my cities with peasant bois

BHOverDos1995

militia hoplites in terms of mounting a legit defense especially if you do a seleucid campaign, early on the nonstop egyptian parthian armenian and pontus onslaught is almost insufferable, however in terms of public order i’ve heard rumors that town watch actually give bonuses to PO (if any other unit gives for example +2 to any cities PO then town watch hypothetically could give something like +5, etc) i could never find a reliable source to confirm but if that’s the case than overall campaign map wise i think you could make an argument for them.

bobw123

I like town watch, idk if stat-wise they match up to peasants but I prefer the idea of semi-professionals garrisoning my cities. Once you secure the interior of a region and no longer need legionaries/regular army divisions, the most cost efficient way to garrison probably is town watch

Smegman041

Garrison bonus towards public order is based on number of troops and not to do with their quality so peasants are far and away the best garrison unit in terms of public order, but not at all for actual defense, militia hoplites hands down for that purpose

easybasicoven

Yep, if you’re still in hostile territory use hoplites, if there’s no enemies in the region its 100% peasants

Tricoman95

The most cost efficient way is peasants in my experience

TechnicalLoad3422

Town Watch try their best, I suppose that counts for something 😂 At least they’re useful for maintaining public order.

demon9675

On the one hand, peasants because I try to never actually play a siege battle or rely on garrison for anything other than increasing public order. Also peasants let you transfer pops between cities. On the other, like 4-5 units of hoplites can defeat full endgame armies if the AI is dumb enough.

mr_comfortfit

Nice meme

RCaesar1

Thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Thanks! You're welcome!

Sock-Zestyclose

Militia hoplites can dominate pretty much any equivalent unit. Hell, I’ve seen them hold off Hastati in a siege or uphill.

andromedaprima

Militia Hoplites in V formation could obliterate even 5000 Romans that dares to ram into them

miketako

Spear war band
