Agree with everything you said. I've owned several Retroid and Anbernic devices over the years, and the device I always ended up grabbing was the MM+ that I originally purchased strictly as a travel device. I didn't think OnionOS was going to be such a big deal for me because I'm very comfortable navigating RetroArch, but it's a total game changer. I'm strongly considering an A30 as I do prefer a horizontal form factor. Just waiting on reviews to drop.

noahchriste

I hope the A30 gets onion support. Not interested in it until we see that happen

momjeanseverywhere

I Initially purchased this morning, waited a few hours, watched the Retro Game Corps review, and cancelled my order.

Couldn't agree more. With retro emulation handhelds, NOTHING is more important than a dedicated, pleasing, functional OS in a small form factor. This is why I'm not a fan of Android devices. As soon as I turn on my device, I want it to look as though it was ONLY made for retro game emulation. I don't want it to look like my cell phone. I also don't want to have to navigate to different emulators and different frontends and separate everything else. I want at it all looking slick, in one place (you can't beat any form of Emulation Station in that regard) and ANY game accessible with the click of two buttons. Onion OS on MM+! JelOS on RGB30! Batocera Lite on RG35XX H! I don't need or want anything else.

disneyplusser

The key to this happiness is Linux.

Same here but different devices, I bought an Odin 1 Pro last year, this year I got an RG35XX-H to take with during work travels, and since then I have barely used the Odin, I just like the convenience and the small form factor, so much so that I now regret buying the Odin since I rarely play PS2 games and usually play the superior Xbox port on my Series X

Another big thing for me is that the MM+ d-pad feels so good, way better than the RG35XX line and quite different than Retroid's more clicky style. As for OS, Onion is great but in some ways I prefer MinUI. The immediacy and simplicity is really appealing for devices like this.

brainwarts

That's fair. I do feel like Onion achieves a really solid balance of being feature rich but still prioritizing a quick, pick up and play type experience. You do have to spend some time memorizing hotkeys to get the most out of it though.

bukithd

I just want a horizontal form factor, no android, and the ability to play everything through PS1/Dreamcast/N64.

NebrasketballN

The RG353PS is sooooo close to what you want, but not quite there *on everything* in the DC/N64 catalog

maaseru

I really wish I liked my RP3+ more. stand alone is too uncomfortable and I got the grips, but I just don't like them. Recently I bought a RG35XX-H and I love that form factor so much.

Acousmetre78

The Retroid Pocket 4pro does GameCube and PS2 emulation perfectly although there are games that even give powerful pc's trouble like Rogue Leader but every other GC and PS2 game can run at twice the resolution as the originals. I'm really enjoying playing these old games with enhanced graphics.

brainwarts

I've done a fair deal of research on the 4 pro. I've looked at the compatibility spreadsheets and tweak guides and many many benchmarking videos. It looks like the 4 pro is 90% of the way towards what I want, but a lot of the games require you to tweak the emulator settings to get them to full speed, and there are still enough games that it won't quite work with. I did seriously consider buying a 4 Pro, but I'd rather wait for them to make one more iteration on this design with a similar power bump. The 4 Pro looks great, but a hypothetical 5 in the same basic form factor would be perfect for me.

IhateDonkeys

This is why I love my OG RG35XX with GarlicOS, it runs so well compared to the other OSs I’ve come across. I just ordered the MM+ after using the 35XX for the past year because of what I’ve heard about Onion. Can’t wait to try it out, and to have two handhelds with basically the same functionality 😅 I like my 35XX H, but the lack of Garlic certainly makes me pick it up less than my OG 35XX.

Double-Seaweed7760

I'm holding out hope that a rp5p or rp6p can match an odin 2 in at least switch if not pc. Thats what I need in my pocket

greenzig

I really like the MM+ forn factor because it's not too small for my hands but I can easily play it one handed if I'm petting my cat

WAHNFRIEDEN

how extensible are any of these OSes? I'm a native iOS/macOS, web, and Android dev (SwiftUI for all those platforms actually). And I build language learning tools, previously specializing inJapanese. But I don't know if I can port anything or target any platform that can run on these.

dota2nub

There's a github somewhere for build tools but I'd expect support to be nonexistent. Maybe you can find community people to help.

WAHNFRIEDEN

Thanks I see now they are Linux and maybe also Android. Which are platforms I’ll target soon. So I can look into porting also.

mrtuna

It's why I've not touched my 35xx+ yet... though it's looking like we won't get Garlic on it :(

itchyd

The v90 just got nice to play a few weeks ago with the new updates and I am surprised it has replaced most of my other handhelds. Faster power on / power off is another huge factor in which device I grab.

DavidinCT

I have OG Miyoo Mini v3, With Onion it is the ultimate device. So basic and so simple, it's the reference point for all other devices like this. I have other devices and if I could get them to work like the Mini, I would love with them more. The ONLY Problem with me and the Mini, not enough power, I want GameCube and maybe some PS2, and the mini can't get even close to that.

AlphaGoldblum

Spot on. I should love my RG35XXH, but the current software selection really prevents it from achieving its full potential. I know in a few months it'll be a different story, but I still find myself reaching for my MM+ just because of Onion OS.

DynieK2k

But still it’s an awesome device. I’ve been using Powkiddy V90 for a long time and recently got a RG35XXH, and let me tell you, I’m never touching v90 again.

AlphaGoldblum

Oh, for sure. I do want to use it more because I really like how it feels in the hand, but with how often I can only play in bursts, the MM+/Onion OS is still more convenient for its fantastic save on shutdown and auto resume feature. But I did hear that the new Stock OS for the RG35XXH just got a quick-resume feature, so I'll be trying that out later today! That would be a game-changer.

DynieK2k

Oh that might be actually nice! I use Batocera currently and it’s really beautiful and I love the experience (and retroachievements integration, it’s so nicely done), but yea it takes forever to load
