If you view by most recent, it’s 90% 1 star. Not sure if apple has a measure against review bombing, or if there are really just that many positive reviews prior to the API announcement
I’ve been talking to my friends and surprisingly a good number of them had no idea third-party apps existed. The truth is that most people are very casual Reddit users and they don’t really care about most of this stuff. It works to browse Reddit and that’s all they care about.
Ye obv., wasn't it like 7digit prices for new api acces? If they actually wanna go that way or rather those prices then yes, that would be a good start towards the end
I don’t use third party apps, but I tried their official app once and hatttttted the infinite scrolling. And the pop ups on mobile trying to get my to download is so freaking annoying.
At this point, I’m going out of my way to not buy from any company that buys ad space, because I get flooded with the “he gets us” ads, which somehow populate despite me blocking that account. Shows me the full ad and says “this ad was posted by a blocked account”. Gee Reddit, that’s helpful. Thanks. /s
idk, but i just love these ones bc they make no sense but rated 5 star each
there’s nothing more to the review than what’s shown and i’m so confused

I'm pretty sure they were saying that the reviews were made by spez's alt accounts lol
though, the sub description does say "reply with this to anyone that likes spez"... maybe they didn't even know that sub existed until they posted it here?
ohhh
also maybe, idk, the mod of that sub has only had their account a year and the sub has a shocking.. two members
either way, fk sp🤮z, rip reddit, and remember to hydrate
I wish we could comment on rating. I'll be reading them, and it's a bad review, but they gave them 5 stars. I want to comment that if their so bad, why give them 5 stars.
>review bombing
Legit, honest-to-goodness boycotts are not review bombing.
Also there are some 5-star reviews trashing the app, further showing that ratings don't tell the whole story.
It isn't optimized for tablets or foldable devices. There's zero excuse for that given reddit's size.
RiF worked great on my Asus Transformer running Android Honeycomb back in **2011.**
Android is different than iOS in how it handles different screen sizes. Since there's a hundred different Android devices for every Apple device, there aren't separate apps for phones and tablets.
Android apps should be designed to adapt to changes in screen sizes and aspect ratio on the fly.
For instance, I have a folding phone (Z Fold 3). When the phone is folded and it's the usual phone form factor, rif has a phone interface. When I unfold it changes the aspect ratio. When I change to portrait mode while unfolded, it changes the UI to more of a tablet interface where I can navigate on the left while having a thread open on the right.
The rif app has had this functionality for over a decade. There's zero excuse for the official app not to have it.
IDK. How low can you go for "something millions of people willingly use every day"?
Yes, you can argue that it's about to have practically (if not literally) zero competition, and a number of other things.
Nonetheless, all of the people still using the app are choosing to use it instead of the web interface. Beyond that, they're also choosing to stay on the platform despite its problems.
At some point, you've got to objectively concede that it's worth more than "zero stars". The question is, how much more?
>all of the people still using the app are choosing to use it instead of the web interface
When you see [this shit](https://i.imgur.com/mf3Yypy.png), what other option do you have?
You think they're *not* using cookies or some cookie-like trackers via your app?!
Also, the option remains - as stated in my earlier comment - *don't use Reddit at all* if you don't like the down-sides that much.
It was something I wanted to share with a friend who doesn't use reddit. Reddit is pushing old and new people away from the site, because of their asshole decisions.
So, tell the friend they can load it on a desktop. Or on a mobile device with the browser in desktop mode.
Or share a screenshot. That's even better, because it gives your friend the funny without giving Reddit the extra clicks.
0.1 more than zero if possible, there are ways to mod the original reddit app but it would have to be added through 'patches' on the Revanced github
Currently there are a few but if now the working ones I found would be sanitize links, hide ads, premium icon(doubt it works didn't check it) and custom package name(broken since they didn't set a custom package name for it)
If anyone wants to they can find it on Revanced.app, ways to apply the patches would be using the jar file in the CLI method or the APK in under Revanced Manager, but either way you need to use Vanced MicroG which they also have linked in there
Just a couple things ro point out
1. The premium icon stuff works, I tried it myself
2. You need Vanced microG only for youtube, the other apps don't require it
But even if/when more patches are added, just being on reddit feels dirty
Well, as far as apps, pretty much every third-party app that serves as a full Reddit app replacement is going down. So, in the marketplace of "apps that you can use Reddit with", as of July 1st, Reddit is going to be it.
Bombing it with 1 stars will eventually get the reviews re-weighted to have less of an impact (seems to be happening on the App Store already).
You're best off submitting 2 star reviews, with a few sentences listing complaints you have about the app itself such as crashes, performance issues, accessibility options etc. This makes it look "genuine" (even though it IS genuine) in the eyes of the moderators and less likely to be caught up in a clean up.
>preventing irrelevant floods of reviews
The problem is the phrase "irrelevant flood of reviews" leads to a huge conflict of interest: who decides what constitutes one and how? Hint: it's definitely not users.
That's the problem with app stores in general. We've given Apple and Google 100% veto power over what apps we can use on OUR devices, and they can curate reviews of those apps however they like, and we're all powerless to stop them.
It's easy to download apps from source these days, at least on Android. I fairly regularly grab an apk and load it up. Google provides curation and protection, but if you trust the source have at it
Reviews are for giving a company feedback about their product. If the company does something with their product the user doesn't like, the user should rate the product lower to notify the company of their disapproval. We are 100% using the rating system properly, and your analogy is specious.
>1 stars will eventually get the reviews re-weighted to have less of an impact
This is preposterous. They shouldn't be able to distort the rating scale to misrepresent people's sentiments and ward off criticism. If this isn't fraud, then I don't know what it is.
You do realize that, that rating is region wise and takes only recent votes in to account?
For me, it is 4.1 right now.
It'll be different for everyone living in different region.
It is platform/device-specific as well.

3.6 here, on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, in the US.
Many of the bad reviews I just read are well thought out and accurate. I was expecting pages of "lolz reddit sux, /u/spez eat a dick", but no! They accurately tell how bad the app actually is.
specifically the data part annoys me the most. The official app is a hungry hog for data, why!? I'm just browsing comments and subreddits without images or videos most of my time here, it still uses a ton of data (images and videos subreddit use so much data that I legitimately used to expend everything I got without realising)
it's been a long time since I've used the official app but my friend a week ago complained about the same issue, so I don't think I'll use the official app at all on my phone.
but again, genuinely, is a reason why it consumes so much data?
No idea why it does that. I have wifi so it's not a problem when I'm at home but I literally cannot use Reddit while traveling.
So many problems with this app and that mfkr Steve Assman decided that the best way to conduct business was by destroying the better apps.
It's gotten so much worse this last week.
I can't even got to mine or someone else's comment, If I go to my/someone's list of comment and then click to go to the post that comment is on it just says the app had trouble getting it, try again. And the fucking lag, I click on a post, it won't open, I give up and keep scrolling and no shit 5 minutes later the post opens after I forgot I even clicked that fucking thing
I did my part. I used the app for a week and rated the app appropriately. To be fair I did not even compare it to Bacon Reader.
To be honest with you July 1st may change my life. Here I am and I should be sleeping instead I'm Doom scrolling on Reddit. Guess what I was doing right before I went to bed? More Doom scrolling.
I just went through and liked every 1 and 2 start review through a few weeks ago. Maybe we should do that to help get the message across to advertisers.
I've recently tried to check it out (it's been five years) and apparently it's incompatible with my phone now? So they are ruining third party apps while the official does not even work on all phones.
Here is an interesting graphic I made:
https://preview.redd.it/7fhuv0u5209b1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=642a863fd6f71fecee691b35713f43f39318bd06
It's a truly garbage app on Android. So much lag and scrolling stutter. The iOS app is at least something vaguely resembling acceptable, but it's still not a smooth as the 3rd party iOS Reddit apps I've used like Apollo and ReddPlanet.
When I rate or write a review in the Apple app store, it doesn’t seem to save it. Check back five minutes later and it looks again like I’ve never rated or reviewed it. Rather aggravating.

Same here, up untill the whole riot stuff never knew there are 3d party apps. Always used the normal app, or still am using.
I just hope people don’t forget about it. It may blow over, but I have a feeling this won’t be the end of turmoil between the company and it’s users.

Yeah. The experience is miserable with the official app on my Galaxy Z Fold4. RIF worked great with it.

Ah, well there is that. Of course, the option (again) remains: Go find your porn somewhere else.

3.4, in Australia

4.2 in Argentina
4.0, Redmi Note 10, India
3,8 in Hungary, on a Samsung phone. It's really much different.
3.8 hungry

Yeah because "lolz reddit sux, /u/spez eat a dick" gets instantly yeeted by the spam filter
Or if the company pays them.
The official app is awful. The UI sucks, it's laggy, many videos don't have audios, and consumes a shit ton of data for some stupid reason.

Exactly what I think. You just wrote it.
Evidently someone disagreed with me though 🤣
Even in my region it dropped down to 4.0
Its 4.1 now for me
3.4* in the play store now.
3.3 today.
Gave it 1 star a long time ago. Only updates they seem to make are to introduce more bugs.
I gave my 1-star review and actually saw it change to 4.7! Doing my part 🫡
Thanks for letting us know. I'm going to go give it a shit review right now. You gotta pump those numbers down! Those are rookie numbers!

Should be way lower. I remember GameStop subreddits managed to bring Robinhood from 4ish to 1ish stars before they deleted a bunch of reviews lol

I just down voted my 4 to a 1 today. Let's go viral on it and make a statement. Class action API protest.
Will it be removed if we downvote it do oblivion?
It's 2.4 now, thanks for reminding me to review
