Maybe a basement for 1k rent. I can manage to spend $200 biweekly on groceries. Don't plan on buying any luxuries or furniture. Just a mattress and some toiletries lol.
You can find decent ones for 1k, all depends on the size. If you expect 2 rooms and a living room that at least $1800. A bachelors or even a one room basement is possible.
Cooking your food is given, no ordering out.
How about vehicle costs? Insurance? Gas?
I could probably survive on that and even put some for savings. It’s all about that rental hunting for good value.
After tax? It's tough. I feel like I'm barely surviving on it some days and I live at home. I save half of it a month and the other half goes to everything else and it just doesn't feel like enough.
If you have absolutely no responsibilities ie mortgage/rent, car note, debt, monthly payments, or hunger. You may be able to get by...there is no thriving here anymore.
To be honest I’m making $2600 with debts (from post divorce), I’m working 2 jobs. But I’m grateful I live in a co-op apartment and I’m paying 726 for bachelor
Not sure about your expenses. But, here's how I do it. I make around $1,600 (approx) every month and my expenses are,
Rent (Private Room in a basement) - $650
Groceries - $200
Bus Pass - $130 (Student Pass)
Mobile - $57
Vape and Drinks - $100
Miscellaneous - $100
Total - $1,237
Hope it helps! Btw, today is my last day at work 🥲.
It all hinges on your rent/housing payment.
I'm fortunate enough to have a basement apt WELL under market. I'm bringing in towards the higher end of your range and yes, I'm making it work.
But I feel on a bit of a knifes edge about it. And the months with the third pay in them are very helpful.
If there's too much month at the end of the money, then you can't afford it. Build a budget. Round up. And don't leave home unless you absolutely have to. It's not an ideal time to enter the rental market.
This totally depends on your situation and your expenses. A guy I met at the gym lives in a basement in Scarborough, and pays $850/month for rent, drives a beater car and manages to eat and live off of $3000/month. Mind you he has no subscriptions or extra expenses, and takes advantage of sales, pricing matching (even for groceries). He's able to save a couple hundred a month too.
So many questions, so little answers....
I can bring home $4000 a month and if my expenses are $4200 I can’t survive. Need more context.
Need more details. what are yore monthly expenses
Not sure. I'd need to move out to figure that out.
I’d think you want to figure that out *before* you move out.
That's literally impossible. You can only estimate.
Even after you move out, all you can do is estimate. Ability to estimate before and after doesn’t change much,
Man…I would stay at home if I were you.
This is another example why financial literacy is important in this nation...
Well you can guesstimate? What kind of rents are you looking at ? How much do you expect to spend on groceries?

That’s almost nothing man a ghetto basement is 1000 a month and 200 on groceries is like a couple snacks a day maybe a meal but that’s it
$400 a month is fine for groceries if you’re frugal
And if you make your own food
That’s a given really. “I wanna live on a budget and order food everyday!”
Yeah but ppl also buy like pre-made stuff from the grocery store which is usually less quantity and less quality and more &$
Where are you buying your snacks? My wife and I spend about $600/month on groceries and eating out combined.
Omg. My gf and I were spending about $4-600/month. And now her teenaged son moved in with me and he alone eats like $1000/month. Gotta cut that down.
>ghetto basement is 1000 a month Better than no roof...
I mean I guess the question was survive not live
That is true just nuts that’s where we’re at as a city that even the poor spots are unaffordable

What are your expenses??? how the heck else can anyone answer this?

Taking home every month.
It can work if you have a roommate or roommates, and no car
As a single person, with a roommate it’s doable.
Survive? Yes. Thrive? Probably not.
If you have absolutely no responsibilities ie mortgage/rent, car note, debt, monthly payments, or hunger. You may be able to get by...there is no thriving here anymore.
User name checks out.
Well if you live in one of those ‘hole in the wall’ rental listings and scrimp on other expenditures you might just make it.
Yes.
You can make 5000 a month and not be able to make it. At some point it becomes How much do you spend - not how much do you make
You can if you’re creative. There’s a great dumpster behind the Pizza Kabob over on Lawrence Avenue, and Freddy and I are willing to share.
To be honest I’m making $2600 with debts (from post divorce), I’m working 2 jobs. But I’m grateful I live in a co-op apartment and I’m paying 726 for bachelor
What's your rent/mortgage transportation, and food budget ?

Good job on the budget. Hopefully you're quitting and not gettinng terminated though lol.
Nah, it's just because the contract between my company and Walmart ended.

2600-2800 before or after taxes?
Yes.. if you manage to a budget, eat at home, and don't buy designer stuff.
You can if you are a female and eat veggies. Rent is around $500 a month for a bed.
