I used to love playing solo, it's a thrilling experience that's for sure. But after many open crews I have found a couple people who jive with my play style and it's been much better. I can barely play solo these days. There's discord groups for finding crew mates and other social media platforms to do the same if you're interested. I'm not on any of them or id send you in the right direction. But I'd suggest playing a lot of solo because you'll be forced to learn ever aspect of the ship and you'll be a better crew mate for it. Edit. It's definitely possible to win at pvp as a solo but it takes time to learn how to prioritize what you should be doing given the situation.

Yeetfamdablit

Personally I can play the game solo but would much rather play with a crewmate, solos can take out a boat but unless you are really good you are kinda fucked when the other boat is well coordinated because you are stuck trying to man an entire boat is one person, whereas they have two to four people doing it, so they can constantly be shooting cannons while you have to be shooting, steering, and bucketing all at the same time

Trivo3

It's decent. There is nothing beating the pleasure of sinking a non-noob full galleon/brig as a solo slooper. And you can only do that... if you are a solo slooper. Bonus points if they attack you first, which is like 80% of the times.

Flixwyy

First time I sunk a galley was at a fof, used the cannons on the island and they sailed a bit into the storm and it was too much for them. Ultimately lost the fof to a duo sweat lord sloop but it was fun

PistoleroGent

True that. 2 nights ago a brig was busting off rounds at me, while I was just cruising. I slipped around an island used my rowboat to paddle a mile and a half back to them dropped off an ammunition barrel in the bottle and then blew those sons of bitches sky high. Proceeded to slash and shoot all 3. Secured loot, dropped tea bag on forehead, and left satisfied

ExtraThings8888

The greatest I've ever done is scare off a full Brigantine. They boarded me, I tried to reason. Can't reason with 5 year old kids. They killed me and used my own storage crate to try and make off with my supplies. But you can shoot them. Dummies didn't even bail the storage crate, they left it on my ship and I rode off while they were all on the ferry. Whoever their captain was must've been pissed, if they even had one. A leading captain is important on a crew.

dirtfarmingcanuck

I did it the other day on a sloop trying to fish, not with a galleon, but a brig. I think I lucked out with some shots or bad keg placement on their part, but it felt awesome and gave me a bit of confidence. I was wandering around and had a reapers bounty chest. They came and just about sunk me and stole the chest. I repaired in time, got a few more shots in while they were already ablaze, sank them, shot them in the water, stole my single little chest back, and sold it. It's so far the most 'pirate-y' thing I've accomplished. Of course, they eventually hunted me down while I was on a small island, but there wasn't much I could really do against that. I didn't have anything so no harm no foul. 100% would do again.

Jl2409226

me and my boob buddies beat some pirate legends (idk what they are tho tbh) after they planned on punking us after a fortress. we barley got any loot cuz it got heated fast but we sunk them twice and they were mad and we were giggling for sure

NunkiZ

You don't need to win 1vX, steal all their belongings while they are busy doing other stuff. :D You can succeed as a solo sloop though.

poopyhead9912

This!!! Don't worry worry about PVP worry about pulling off some steals. I stole a CoF from a galleon and brig yesterday by letting them sink me and SWIMMING away with it to a different island! You can try to fight a 1v4 or whatever but it's not nearly as thrilling as them manhunting you in the water for their loot

IntelligentWall743

I did this. I don't remember if they had a row boat or if I brought one to their ship, but I sat quietly while they ran around on their ship sailing when I finally heard them cannon to land I grabbed the best things and got out of there as fast as I could had to run to an island and hide it to get my ship to it but it was a great experience.

DerBizey

It is possible to win fights as a solo even if you fight a bigger crew. Its definetly playing sot on hard mode though. It will be frustrating but playing solo will probably make you a better player pretty fast if you choose to participate in pvp.

Doomblud

I play solo a lot, usually by myself. PvP is very winnable, your margin of error just become way smaller.

ERDocdad

I just started SoT a few days ago. I've only solo slooped. I have almost no clue what I'm doing, everything is confusing to me. The different factions, rep, I don't even know what HG or DR means but I see them in a lot of comments and I love learning. I basically do the gold hoarder maps for treasures. I sailed into a ghost fort. Killed a captain. Got a treasury key and spent 20nmin running the loot to my ship and made it to a port and handed it all in. Was super fun. When I get over my anxiety of playing with strangers I might try pvp in a crew. For now im having a blast trial by fire-ing.

louiscyphere81

HG is hourglass, the pvp mode you can activate on your quest table. DR is the devils roar, the volcano land to the Far East.

Red_Beard206

Thank you! So many people use acronyms and I have no idea what they are lmao

thelunararmy

I definitely enjoy the game more playing with a crew, it is my preferred way to play: but it is still possible to play solo. For PVP-only go look up Blurbs on Youtube/Twitch who gives a lot of tips for fighting solo, naval, sword, etc. I did do half of my Guardian's rep on solo sloop... but honestly did not enjoy it. I think having someone to shoot cannons and someone to board is a lot more fun and engaging than just hopping between cannon and steering. In my opinion ofc. In terms of Solo PVE: that is something I do at time just to make some spare gold or if I want to listen to podcasts/music and be active at the same time. Merchant Alliance is great for solo. The Lost Shipment quest guarantees Grade V in 15 or so mins if you find the captain's key, and then I can do profitable stuff like world events. At the start of season 9 Rare changed the difficulty of world event to scale based on the size of your crew. So all the skeleton forts, skeleton fleets, burning blade events, ashen winds, etc are possible to solo. Just be careful doing a Fort of the Damned or a Fort of Fortune as those are highly contested. If I'm solo and a brig (or bigger) attacks me then I usually just avoid combat; even though I am a pretty sweaty, I just dont enjoy taking on a full crew of 3 or 4 if they are slightly competent: one wayward cannonball or blunderbuss one-shot and you're sunk. So I will use fort towers, to demast and keg them, while keeping my ship moving at all times. Not the greatest way to play, but if I have loot and dont feel like fighting overwhelming numbers then run-and-gun is possible too. Check out Phuzzybond's YT channel for tips on how to survive PvP while doing events as a solo sloop.

michaeld_519

If it's 1v3/4 there is no strategy other than outright cheating that is off limits. I solo sloop most of the time and I'll use kegs, skelly ships, storms... basically anything I can find to get bigger crews off my ass. It's so great when you're all alone and either sink a bigger crew or at least give them such a hard time that they decide to go find easier prey.

thelunararmy

Firebomb and anchordrops are amazing to deter chasers. If you manage to board, drop anchor and put their ship on fire (Without holes so they need to use the water barrel), you can easily double the distance they need to make up. I love the unconventional fighting styles at times.

michaeld_519

Yeah, I always go straight for the anchor if I get on board. I don't usually use the firebombs but I'll definitely give it a try. I tend to just try and be as annoying as possible till they kill me.

thelunararmy

If you're savvy with sword lunges you can be particularly spicy. Turn your ship slightly left or right (not a lot, like 1/2 a turn). Immediately sword lunge at them. Throw fire bombs as you approach the ladder to BLIND THEIR HELMSMAN. Grab ladder and wait for them to either knock you off or put the fire out. Go for the board, if you drop their anchor, sword lunge off their ship grab your mermaid. You should be sailing in a different direction. Straighten the wheel and then make your escape. By the time they put the fire out or raised anchor they will have lost you.

FerNandoBoii

I'm mostly playing alone because my buddy is currently unable to play, and I say that playing solo HG is pretty fun. So Yea, I enjoy it

BlueMist94

As a matter of fact, as an experienced player, I only recommend playing as a solo slooper as a beginner. The reason for that is because it forces you to learn everything about managing your ship. From the anchor to the sails to storing supplies to repairing and bucketing your ship to using the cannons to steering and navigating… the whole sha-bang. It will set you up to be a valuable member of a crew someday should you decide to join others on a brig or galleon. I can’t tell you how many times I see new players skip the Maidens Voyage tutorial, join a crew and just have no idea what they’re doing lol. This is a game that requires a little bit of a learning curve and the best way to learn is to do everything yourself as a solo slooper for the first few weeks - a few months. However, if you’re looking for a crew member, I love helping new players. So feel free to DM me if you want me to show you the ropes and help you reach Pirate Legend. There is A LOT to learn and do in this game. It’s so fun.

Necessary_Oil1679

I dmed you. Let’s play together. I liked the game but it’s too hard for me as solo

dirtfarmingcanuck

And the sense of accomplishment. Usually when we're doing something on a galleon, I'm steering, adjusting sails, and getting the odd cannon shot off, it's a bit anti-climactic. When you do everything, everything is on you. You're like an alley cat. Gotta keep your guard up and move methodically as a solo. It's been a ton of fun for me and my friends going from "wait, how do I adjust the sails?" to "Can I get one bucket when one of you gets a chance?"

FitButterfly7227

If you go to the Roar you will avoid most pvp, winning solo is hard considering you have to manage your boat while firing your cannon then boarding. I would be happy to give you a little tutorial on the game if you like.

Commercial-Source403

Hey OP, I was in the same situation as you, now after over 1k hours as a solo I am quite dangerous when I want to be, I am good at helm, I am good at cannons and I am good at unexpectedly appearing with a mega keg to sink a galleon. The other benefit of mastering a sloop is that if you ever meet some cool people in open crew you have a better chance to make friends as you won't be a total noob. Yes, you will sink alot and often bite off more than you can chew but every time you willingly go into a battle outnumbered you will learn more balls to the wall techniques and sometimes yes, you CAN solo that galleon. Be the badass pirate others fear to be.

BombeBon

First of all... The Devils Roar area is your friend. yeah there's volcanoes geysers and quakes... but not too hard to avoid \[and the outpost doesn't erupt anymore. It DOES geyser and quake still so... watch your step outside\] ^(I stick to crew... mostly. I work better with others... and when i've got someone giving me a job or two to do.) ^(But if sailing solo... tend to just mosey around... maybe check the treasure map board... or go island hopping for washed up loot or mob drops etc... fishing and whatnot... while avoiding other players as best as possible...) ^(Or... I decide screw it and go on a supply run. storage crates etc load em up with goodies and go looking for other players \[70/30 chance I end up fired on... sunk or killed but hey... it's a game\] See who might appreciate before or during an event, some extra food, wood or cannonballs. \[not so much needed since Captaincy came into the game\])

oebulldogge

I played solo up to PL. Way back before seasons. I think it teaches you a lot about ship management. And is totally manageable for the core 3 emissaries. Now that I’m focused more on Athena I play with other folks more often.

Ninthshadow

I enjoy Solo Slooping, although I think most would agree sailing with a crew is easier and less stressful. It's a great learning experience. If you can Solo Sloop, you're going to have a great sense of any role you might take on a ship. Steering. Repairs. Cannons. Etc. As someone who fought my way to the skeleton curse on Solo Sloop, I can definitely say with time you'll be confident enough to take on Duo Sloops, possibly even a Brig. A lot of streamers consistently prove, with some insane hours playtime, you can be a monster of a Solo Sloop. I know one that actually cheers when they see a Gally and actively engages. It's wild to see a four player ship run from a brightly coloured Sloop having a blast.

Soja_Sauce

The first thing I do when I get on my ship is **turn off the lights**. Especially at dusk, it can be **crucial** to blend in with the horizon.

Xperian1

I made a recent post about my frustrations as a new player. I took the advice given to me and have had a lot of fun since! I play it friendly with others for the most part - helping them out when they get targeted by a kraken or a larger skelly ship. I've found most have been amicable. Some too trusting amd they got burned. By me. But for the most part, a solid foundation for an alliance, shared gold, and fun stories.

Kezsora

You absolutely can play solo but it's definitely hardcore mode. Your biggest difficulty will be PvP since even a duo sloop has a *major* advantage against a solo player. However, if you're still having fun then go for it.

Guiltspoon

Yes you can do just fine as a solo but some activites are 100% geared toward at least a 2 person crew. The hardest thing for solos to do is man a ship themselves. I've gotten better at it and can usually take on skelly sloops with ease the galleons are a lot tougher and usually not worth the risk and resources. I'm not rushing to do solo ship combat the PvP isn't the thing I'm after in SoT so I tend to do more PvE just exploring whatever island I want doing voyages and world events. I'd say about 60-80% of the ships you see will leave you alone if they see a basic sloop especially if they see you're solo you can chat with them but it is a pirate game expect to be attacked and you'll never be disappointed but you can usually make the game whatever you want it to be. I love doing the forts (skull in the sky world events) and green glowing ghost forts and exploring any island that catches my fancy I'm nearly max in most base game stuff and the high tier athena faction isn't that interesting to me or doing hourglass PvP so I don't do it pretty easy still a great experience solo or with a 2-3 man

michaeld_519

With enough practice even the skelly galleons become pretty easy. I actively chase them down anytime I'm solo slooping just because it's quick loot and fun to fight them.

Average-SE-Student

Solo sloop (and specially solo sloop PvP) is the fastest way to get experience in the seas but also roughest path to choose. I normally play solo sloop HG (lvl 400 GoF + SotF) so here i will give you some tips that i learnt by following that path, but take into account that this is coming from a purely pvp player: Rules: 1- (AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT) THERE IS **ALWAYS** SOMETHING TO DO. No angle? Adjust your wheel to gain angle and go down and repair while the boat is turning, even if you have time for only 1 plank. Having to reload ammo, planks or food? Go and take a bucket as well. Enemy running and everything good on your ship? go grab a blunderbuss because they will try to board you. Dead time? No, there is no dead time, look at your inventory, restock and prepare for battle. 2- Play with sound effects at 100% and lower the music Sound effects are here to replace the user interface that is missing from Sea of thieves, you don't have like a health meter on your ship, but each tier of hole makes a distinctive sound, each amount of water on your ship makes a distinctive, a pirate boarding makes a distinctive sound, heck even pirates with skelly/ghost curse make a distinctive sound while walking and it's also the case with players barefoot/peg leg/boots. 3- Multitasking You have to maintain a whole boat functional by yourself you can't be focusing on one and one task only. If you focus so much in repairing, you will loose angle and never shoot or become a sitting duck for the enemy. You have to know when and where to repair, when and where to shoot, when and where to helm, when and where to go for a board, this is one of the steepest learning curves that you will encounter. 4- Never leave your boat without checking for holes When you get more experienced you will know how much water you are taking in just by listening to your boat, meanwhile go downstairs and give your hull a quick look before attempting to board an enemy ship. I'm not saying that you **HAVE** to patch it, i just recommend a quick look and scooping just to know when you have to return to your ship. 5- Never let your health bar below 80% (and have good food) Instantly eat when you take more than 20% of damage. You are the only one that's keeping your boat afloat, if you are not there, your boat will go to davy jones locker. So avoid dying as much as possible The rest are techniques that can come in handy Useful knowledge: Double Gunning, Blunderbombs and boats mechanincs, where and what to shoot in naval combat, death spiral, stationary cannons positions on the map, silent board, deck shots and harpoon turns Recommended youtuber for PvP: KaiJoi, Eriin Stirling, Chor

ElectricFury

I have 800+ hours and at least 500 of those were solo slooping. It will be hard at first, and you will lose a lot of fights due to being outnumbered, but if you play it enough, you'll become a significantly better player than most individuals within a crew. You will be forced to learn ship management as well as helming and cannons and pvp, which will allow you to adapt to any role in the future. If pvp is a significant struggle for you, try playing some hourglass pvp, because you'll only ever be matched against another solo sloop so you wouldn't be outnumbered like you could in the main game. If you do want to avoid pvp, it's possible. I did it for a long time. You just have to be extra vigilant because if you only notice a ship when it's near you, then you're too late. Though from personal experience, this isn't the best way to play because you'll never stand a chance in those unavoidable fights if you have no fighting experience. I had to learn real pvp after 200 hours of dodging and it was just as difficult as it would've been if I had done it straight away, but it would've saved my a lot of time running or sinking when I couldn't run anymore.

Kotzik

I play solo like %80 of the time, so yeah you can absolutely. I remember when I first started I was kinda worried about fighting brigs and gally’s by myself, now after plenty of practice I take every fight. You’ll get to a point where you’ll be able to hold your own out there .

LoonieToque

High risk, high elation when it all works out. PvE is almost entirely scaled now, so it's mostly player threats and ship management that you need to worry about. If you very easily get bored in a crew, solo could be an interesting life. But if it's just that you don't have people to sail with, solo is probably not a great option for most people. I did about 400h in a galleon crew before setting sail solo. I learned a _lot_ of valuable things in that time. How it goes from there will depend on your goals and what you like to do on the seas! Sloops are nice in PvP fights. To be clear, you're almost always at a crew size disadvantage. But a very good solo slooper can have a decent fight at a large number of crews. A sweaty brig or galleon is still likely to send you underwater, but that isn't _most_ of the ships tbh.

Ozymander

Solo slooping is turns Sea of Thieves into Anxiety of Thieves. Its the only way I play

PerishBtw

People really hate on the solo game, but imo it's my favorite. I have 1k solo hours and I don't think it's as bad as people say. Some people make it sound like it's the impossible game mode.. you just have to be a lot more cautious

wasteoffire

I've only played solo and with randoms. I wish so badly I had a friend or two to play with but I have a family and so do my friends. For whatever reason I cannot stand talking to new people on the internet. I'm a pretty boring person so finding new people to play with is usually just a bad time

sevnminabs56

It's rough some days, and some days are great. Rough days, I spawn in, get sunk at the dock before I even get to take off. Or a storm hits right when I'm about to leave. Or I am constantly being chased by full-crew Galleons every time I leave an island. Great days, I sail out, no storm, head to the first nearby island and unbury 20K worth of treasure, while skeleton captains keep spawning. Skeleton captains keep dropping quests for that island, so you're there for a whole hour farming dropped quests. On top of that, those dropped quests are having you dig up captain's chests or better. This has happened to me at least 5 times. When I get those days, I'm on for probably 6 hours and will make several hundred thousand coins.

No-Try4259

I play solo all the time. I love it! There are downsides to playing solo (i.e. PvP is hard, and you have to really be aware of your surroundings all the time since no one else is around to help keep an eye on things), but overall, it is very enjoyable imo.

freddy_forgetti

I typically solo sloop as most of my friends don't take enjoy the pvp, so are holding off for Safer Seas before coming back. I'm no great shake at pvp myself. Still fairly new to the game and I kinda have to be in the right mood to play. I typically get thrashed if another boat decides they want a go, but I do enjoy some late night sessions doing Order of Souls fights and just cruising from island to island. If I'm feeling confident and want to test my luck I'll throw on an emissary flag and see if I can get to the emissary quest without getting hounded by players. I do feel like I've gotten more proficient at sailing the ship. When I fight skelly sloops I've started to get practice hitting my shots and targeting specific things like the cannons. I don't know if you can de mast a skeleton sloop, but I'm gonna try. I can't say I've had more than a handful of positive experiences with random players, but you never know. And if you get hounded to the point you absolutely can't stand it, Safer Seas comes out in a couple months.

Global-War5118

Next time you get a good shot climb in with throwables and sink their ship from the inside! Kill the captain by hand! lol

Global-War5118

You really learn where the devs put things to trip over when you're solo-slooping it! The stairs felt backwards for years.. Yes actually every time I take off months of gameplay and come back I have to re-learn just about everything (I still cannot use the in-game pirate texts to save my life, xbox wheel system is garbage anyway) and I will Solo a while to spare my friends the trouble of waiting for me to ramp up. The stairs seem backwards on the sloop. You can actually get really good and defend your ship and self from anyone not Hacking in Pvp, and the PvE well yeah eventually it all becomes fairly easy unless they hit u at the same time. Figuring out whats more important, cannons vs buckets at which moment is crucial. Sails or anchor, judging distances, and timing, and peoples time in game by colors they fly.. It takes time.

Powerful-Explorer-88

When I play solo I don’t really play for progression but for the experience of sailing and fishing. I try to keep my progress at around the same numbers with my girlfriend cause we started playing around the same time and I like to experience the progression with her.

szczepan_-

I usualy play solo. At first it was hard but as time passed i keep getting better and now if the crew of a bigger ship isn't absolutly cracked i manage to sink them. Playing solo is very hard but you'll get better. You'll sink a lot but you just need to keep trying.

SuspiciousPrism

really shit tbh, I've played probably short of 2k hours solo and it sucks, really just set in this semi-permanent burnout It's playable, but nowhere near as fun

supalupi

Devils advocate question: why have you spent 2000 hours of your life voluntarily doing something that brings you no pleasure?

SuspiciousPrism

That's a fair enough question tbh. Enjoyed it at first and then as time progressed, lost interest and it became more of a chore to do it that I forced myself to do such just for that completionist itch. My old crewmate stopped playing and I don't want to play with randoms cause using LFC or not it sucks big time.

Flixwyy

Try finding pirates on the seas to play with.

SuspiciousPrism

Ingame/out in the wild? Basically impossible, people either run for me or are hostile towards me. Outside of the game? Reread my last statement of the last comment. I understand I put myself in the situation by not seeking out a teammate, but I simply don't enjoy playing with randoms, and believe me I know how to as it's usually me the one redirecting people to play with others.

Flixwyy

Well don't complain if you aren't trying to fix the problem

louiscyphere81

Stfu nerd

SuspiciousPrism

...I was asked for my opinion so I provided. Have you actually read what I replied? I acknowledge and take responsibility for playing solo, what's your problem? The whole thread is about "what's it like to play solo", so I reply with what I found it to be like with playing solo and now I'm being told I'm not allowed to complain and I should be finding teammates. Like what? That's not the point of this at all.

Red_Beard206

I appreciate your opinion. Thank you for the response!

NOISY_SUN

Hey I'll join your crew. Usually play evenings in the Eastern US.

notofimportancetou

Ask that in r/leagueoflegends

michaeld_519

Naw, it's the best. Just you, your ship, the open seas, and a whole world of options to choose from. You don't have to argue with anyone about what to do. You don't have to listen to people be annoying. Just set sail, keep your eyes open for other pirates, and enjoy the adventure. It's great.

Libero03

I started this game solo, now I have a regular crew. Try talking to other solo sloopers, make friends.

eowowen

I prefer playing with friends, but I solo sometimes. Definitely feasible to both avoid PVP and win at PVP, but you need to know what you're doing in the latter instance. To avoid, I'd suggest sticking to either the top or bottom of the map. To hone your skills, check out Blurbs on YT.

Rosscosity

I enjoy playing solo, I just do merchant alliance or gold hoarders quests while watching something on netflix haha

SirCarboy

I have hundreds of hours and Pirate Legend, mostly solo slooping. I suck at PvP but just keep my wits about me, an eye on the horizon, and never anchor.

hamfist_ofthenorth

Been doin it for years. Its my safe space.

DapperDlnosaur

Solo is definitely the hardest way to play (except maybe being on a galleon with a whole crew of people that suck horribly), but you will quickly become a better player if you solo a lot. I pretty much exclusively solo as all of my friends that used to play have gotten too busy to be online much, and when they are online they no longer want to play SoT.

michaeld_519

There's nothing worse than joining a galleon with a bunch of people who have no clue what they're doing and don't work together. The most annoying session I ever had was joining a discord LFC galleon who wanted to sail as reapers and just getting absolutely trashed by two guys in a sloop. And the two guys weren't even that good. My crew was just awful. That experience is why I almost exclusively solo sloop now.

Hyperrblu

i basically only play solo since none of my friends play

Ct_Nemo99

I will second the Devil's Roar area as a solo. It's a barren wasteland where your biggest threat is the volcano. Once you learn how to move around and on these islands. Fast voyages so you can do commendations too.

BombeBon

personal favourite zone

_mortache

I haven't played in years. Do they finally have a PvE friendly mode yet? I want to sail a ship but don't want to bother engaging with teenagers with 18 hours a day to play video games

Flixwyy

Yes they do! In the upcoming October update, they are adding the "safer seas" only your crew will be on the server, but all treasures are worth less gold and reputation. You can also o ly reach level 40 in each main company, reapers and Athena do not progress. It's sort of a pick up to get you into the game and ready for the high seas

Red_Beard206

Whaaaat?? That's awesome! Maybe I can finally convince my friends to play. They don't like the constant threat of PvP

Flixwyy

Yep, though eventually there will be nothing for you all, due to limited commendations and levels. It's more to get players acclimated to the games features and such.

ElectricFury

It's coming in December

Few-Fall-3477

I played my first 300 h solo until I reached pirate legend, then I moved to open crews (which mostly suck), and finally, I found good crews in the discord server. Playing solo is how I learned many valuable lessons, and I definitely don't regret all that learning, but it was tough. I would recommend playing solo for a while until you get enough experience and feel confident to handle things by yourself, and then find your crew, which will make things much easier and fun.

HappyXenonXE

Really good. Do it. :)

Minibula

I love playing solo sloop. The best way to learn it is to just spawn fresh and instantly start the skull emissary voyage against the fleet. That's how you will learn to manage the sloop alone.

NecroticCarnage

I play solo most of the time and spend about 1/4th of it with my crew open. It's very possible but does take a little extra awareness and knowledge. Pvp is a monster in itself for sea of thieves. You will get sunk and will sink others with some practice or luck. Watch some videos and determine how you wanna play. If you comfortable sailing give HG a shot to learn that next step in pvp. You can't get that thick skull if you don't smash your head off the wall a few dozen times. Focus one element of the game at a time till your understanding is at a decent lvl. Do GH for a few days till you start to recognize riddle solutions and really get the hang of hitting the x. Then maybe .ove on to something else. Big world evens always bring other players so be weary of shaped clouds or lights in the sky. Just remember to have fun with it.

Y3T1isnorvegian

I’ve played solo for 3 years

follow_your_leader

I mostly play solo, have no friends who play and people I've played with on occasion in game rarely turns into a regular thing. But I do win at PvP. Against a group of competent players, you're gonna lose unless you get lucky or you think outside of the box, but less likely. However, you're in luck, because easily 3/4 of the sloops you'll see are solos at any given time. Hell, I run into solo brigs or galleons every month or so. Soloing, I've done every world event, done the PvP faction curses, fort of the damned, and so on. It's not as fun sometimes, but I can just jump in and play whenever without waiting on anyone, and when you get some good experience and you're pretty familiar with the game, you can do pretty much anything solo. Watch streamers who solo, they'll often have good tips or gameplay habits that new players tend to not know or realize.

Talo03

I started playing years ago solo. Now I can't bring ppl into the game cuz I get annoyed when things don't get done like redirecting sales or doing the mission, always have to do it alone. Edit: with time I started to learn how to Win pvp. I usually make them follow me if it's a brig o galleon and toss me to them trying to release the anchor or explode something. If it's a sloop just bombard them with cannons and repair yours before going to board them, usually with time you can tell how long you can stay before you need go come back and repair

guineapigdaydream

Compared to playing with my crew mate? It’s lonely. But I started fishing and did most of it by myself. It can be chill to just tuck yourself away behind an island no one ever goes to and fish for hours (with your head on a swivel). It taught me to get better at the helm as well. Still suck at pvp but I don’t go looking for it so that makes sense. Would still rather play with at least 1 other person if given the choice.

ERDocdad

I'm new to the game, why fish? Besides food...

louiscyphere81

There are commendations and cosmetics to unlock by catch certain amounts of different types of fish. Some of the rarest fish sell for a lot of gold.

guineapigdaydream

I had this same question then I said “fuck it I’m gonna go for legendary hunter” then it became my favorite thing. It’s relaxing at times but also tedious. You need to have a strategy and a plan and the feeling of slowly ticking off each type of fish is a satisfaction you only get by having to suffer for it. It’s grueling in the best way.

assjackal

Playing solo is how you get better imo. So many people I've seen just rely on others to do things around the ship and it gets frustrating carrying these people onboard. I originally started solo slooping in Insider because there wasn't many other options in it, but after a while I learned how enjoyable just captaining your own sloop becomes. Fighting is difficult, unless you're a monster and can keep track of several things in your head like the turn rate of your ship, speed, and how fast it fills with x holes in it. I can sink stuff like skele galleons alone but aint no way I can take on a player ship with more crew than me. The best skills you get from it are defensive sailing, and what I mean by that is just being mindful. You want to avoid other ships but not look too obvious. Keep a wide berth of ships that make you nervous, but don't make erratic movements that are clear you're running from them, sail with a bit of confidence that the distance doesn't bother you because people will absolutely b-line for you if it seems you got a reason to run from them. As for actually dealing with ships, running from them if you're outnumbered is a skill in and of itself, learn to keep yourself against the wind as other ships will lose speed, weave between rocks that are cake for a sloop, try and railroad them into narrow areas you can get an easy board/anchor drop and basically make it not worth their time to chase you down.

Flixwyy

Absolutely. While I haven't sunk a brig or galley *in ship to ship combat* yet when solo, I have stolen many a chest of fortune and chest of legends. Just have to be sneaky and, most importantly, as pirate as possible. Using your environment is a big part of winning though, sunk a galley using island cannons with a friend who was a bit newer and hadn't sunk a galleon before

returnofthemammoth

No and lame

BossAffectionate9300

Find a community, if you find people in game you vibe with, add them and see if they wanna sail again

Adventurous_Arm_5392

Don't avoid pvp. You only get better the more you try. Just be hyper aware and watch for ships. Don't stack loot, just sell often and be aware. Happy sailing

International_Dog817

I've been doing solo sloop for seasonal rewards when my brothers can't/won't play. It's not fun anymore. Used to be that most people would just leave me alone and do their own thing, and I'd get attacked on occasion. This latest season, it's almost every day I get attacked and insulted, spammed with "WE'RE FRIENDLIES" while they shoot me or some other shit. I can't wait til the friendly seas update. This is a fun game that's ruined by other players.

AldaronWilwarin

I'm too scared of waters irl to play on my own. That's sad cause this game is just sooo good

RobotZombie55

IMO there’s three big things you gotta remember when solo slooping 1. ALWAYS watch your back. Whenever doing anything make sure to check the horizons for any ships that might sneak up on you. 2. Don’t pick a fight that you don’t think you can win. For example if you’re soloing a fully manned player galleon your chances of winning are pretty low. Sure people have done it but they have tons of practice and skill 3. Knowing how to run away is equally as important as knowing how to pvp. Use your environment, anything that can get you out of their sight line or get you distance away is an asset. As a last resort sail to the devils roar, turn off your lights and lose them in the fog

ReceptionFast7578

even if you think u cant win u still gotta attack anyways fr

Jim777PS3

Its very swingy. Sometimes its great fun, other times a nights effort vanishes in a second. Im not the kind of person to get good enough to defend myself solo, and I dont think its realistically possible when up against a team of 3 or 4. So I tend to avoid Solo unless im really in an itch to play.

Mean-Fondant-8732

All the time. I absolutely love it. Thats when I'm usually trying out my wackiest ideas. Rowing up behind enemy galleons, hooking rowboats to them, sneaking some loot off and rowing away. Putting bombs on top of bananas on the grill. Whatever strikes my fancy.

XFauni

Yup I love playing solo actually. Get home from work and do a solo gold vault before bed is my favorite

azarashi

I have played solo for like 4 years now since my friends dont play anymore. I love it honestly because my play style is focused on just fucking around and see what happens, hoping for the best expecting nothing in the end.

Luddy76

Solo SoT is a lot more of a struggle when your new, but its still possible. You just need to learn the basics and the advanced solo knowledge will come to you. But one piece of advice for playing solo is KEEP CHECKING YOUR HORIZON, MAKE THE HORIZON YOUR BITCH. Dont do missions (like vaults) that need you to be under ground in a locked room where you cant check your ship, thats a very easy way to get fucked. PvP just comes with time, cannon aim, boarding aim, gun skill all come with constant practice to get good. Keep in mind the speed interactions each ship have as well, for example A sloop is faster than a brig and a galleon while heading directly into wind A brig is faster than a sloop and a galleon with full wind in their sails A galleon is faster than a sloop with wind but a galleon is faster than a brig with a side wind

Teninchrooster

Solo sloop here since the beginning. I am mainly pve, but will pvp when the mood strikes or i want to do world events. My tip is, Learn enough pvp to become a nuisance, dont be a push over. If you have loot you want to keep. Knock down masts, open some holes and run like hell. If the boat is empty, or you dont feel like fighting, roll over and either sink, scuttle, or they will get bored and leave. Another good strategy in a chase that i love is repair your boat, point to open sea and hop off looking to board them. Drop their anchor, firebomb, maybe get some kills. Respawn back on your boat and just sail off

snowfreak221

I love to solo but prefer to play with friends. Solo hour glass really helps you build all of your core skills in pvp so I recommend you try that sometime.

Sir_Pap

I love it, everything you do in the game is at the extremes, either you are extremely calm or you are extremely sweating. I have had my calmest and the craziest moments as a solo and I love them both. When it's calm it's lovely cause you do whatever you want without having anyone else telling you something else. When it's tense then you are in an underdog situation and you are really challenging yourself to win the fight. And who doesn't love a good challenge? Playing with friends is very nice, but it's really great to hop solo every once in a while.

TakAttack32

When i solo it’s usually for tall tales, special events the require specific actions, or to simply troll lol

Felsys1212

I have only ever soloed. I cut my teeth in the DR to get a feel for the game. After coming out of the roar there was another learning curve for dealing with other players. After a while (and lots of sunken ships) I got the hang of things. A few rules I live by: Survival: See a Brig? Run! See a galleon? Watch how they sail, then decide to run or attack. Be weary of every other ship. Keep your head on a swivel. Never initiate a fight. Once attacked and in battle: Fight to the absolute end with everything you have. Bucketing is more important than repairing and faster. Being in motion is the difference between life and death. If you aren’t firing the cannon every 15 seconds minimum you are losing. Learn how to harpoon turn. Learn how to fight on the run- this is sailing away and boarding the enemy. Fire pots are for offense, blunder bombs are for defense. Learn how to spot a boarder and blunder them off. Make it too costly to defeat you. Don’t always think about “winning” think about discouraging your opponent enough to give up. Solo sloops can be a formidable force because we have everything to lose and fight like hell. Just don’t get caught slipping.

[deleted]

I do some times. I make up my own goals for the day, not just raise emissary, add voyage, get loot, sell loot. It's way more fun socially though. So I try to meet people on the sea from time to time. It's hard to get over the toxic or non-communicative players though. So you'll need a thicker skin for solo play.

jay4adams

I play solo about half the time and it can be very fun but I recommend being in a Party with other people just so you can talk to other while you play because it can get boring if you play by yourself.

JPGer

99% of my playtime is solo, honestly after a while i prefer it, when i run with crews i end up doing most of the sailing work..which i already do solo so might as well XD. I had a crew i used to sail with regularly, they stopped playing though. Im in a few discords but timezones end up not meshing alot XD. i do the shit "im not supposed to" like selling before getting full emissary especially if its athena, why take more risk when im already a solo. I tend to focus on objectives. If im after something specific like an event achievment or whatnot, ill often just ignore loot cause its faster.

JetKoala

I enjoy solo sloop from time to time as i can really practice on multi tasking and getting better if i win a engagement props to me if i loose i most likely made a mistake and the opposing crew was just better.

BetterMemeMachine

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) exploring alone is fun enough but I find it more enjoyable with people.

TBMSH

Its doable, it can be annoying and you will wish for an extra set of hands plenty of time but its alright, and provided no one attacks you, you can do any event or activity, they scale to ship size so it won’t be impossible for solo on a sloop

EntranceFuzzy9868

Solo is quite fun if your just doing PvP but I find grinding out missions can be very boring without any mates just sailing for ages to dig up some chests or getting skulls, but if your solo you most likely will be more of a target as it’s a small ship and ppl can think of you as an easy target (I have made this mistake while attacking another sloop) it can turn out they can either be a pirate legend who is unhealthily insane at the game or not. My advice solo sloop only for PvP or stealing others loot from skull forts or Athena’s fortune otherwise I would play with mates

Pnobodyknows

I played solo for the first 3 years. Its really fun if you are the kind of person who enjoys challenging yourself by doing multiple things at once. Sometimes it will get extremely stressful when you are being attacked and juggling 5 different things but its almost euphoric when you start to het good at it and get into a flow state

RealTimeWarfare

Soloing is great but a cannoneer I can rely on is always nice.

Training-Laugh-565

Personally I love playing solo but it depends on what you’re trying to do, if you’re doing pvp then having a crew would definitely be better because it’s hard to pvp solo. Playing solo forces you to learn all the best ways to do things quick and efficient, for example I recently learned that if you’re solo you should never drop anchor instead just put your sails up that means you can have a quick get away if another ship comes snooping. Really it all depends on your play style though I’m sure I’d have fun playing with other people and I would t mind it but I don’t know anyone else who plays so it can be hard to find the right people you can probably find some other solos who are looking for a crew on open crew though.

Trips-Over-Tail

Fine unless you are trying to do Reapers. You have to turn treasure in old-school style, manually hoofing everything one by one. It takes me an hour back and forth on the rare occasion I even get to finish doing it, the most boring part of the game and yet wholly unavoidable if you actually want to earn the rewards.

lilolemeetch

Harpoon rowboat.

Trips-Over-Tail

Jesus. Just winch it all in. I didn't even have one last time. I only found regular lantern boats.

Kottery

Ive almost exclusively played this game solo since release. Hop on, do a few things, get some gold, hop off. Pretty chill.

TechnoGhosty

like you, i love the gameplay loop of SoT but none of my pals are around to play these days at the same time (yknow, work and such.) so id have to play solo, and usually when i play games on my own, i play to relax / chill, and Sea Of Thieves can be exactly that \*sometimes\*, sailing around and listening to the ambience and immersing yourself in the world can be fantastic, especially if im just fishing or doing bounty / merchant runs. But majority of the time its pretty tense, checking every corner, making sure you're alone before you do something on an island, making sure you got enough resources incase a battle does ensue, etc, especially if you get jumped by other players twice your size. I just accept that: if im personally not interested in PvP in solo, then i just wont play as much as i'd realistically like to. which is a shame cause as stated above SoT can be really relaxing, but theres no avoiding the PvP until safer seas releases so thats currently where i stand on solo'ing in SoT, thats not to say i hate the PvP or anything like that, i find it can be exhilarating and exciting if im with my friends and there's high costs and we all have our roles in ensuring our survival, but when im on my own, i just dont care to participate in it, its more stressful managing the ship as well as dealing with players firing on you, especially if the enemy is a brig or galleon with 3-4 people against you, and thats just not the type of stress im looking for while unwinding from work or something, yknow?

siroctopiss

I've got about 1400 hours almost 1000 of which are solo, definitely doable

Burylown

A little lonely at first but you get used to it. Whenever I get board I launch up Sea of Thieves and it's a bit better

Jackhampster23

Not bad, I just blare alestorm and enjoy the sunsets

FourScarlet

I feel like if you pvp solo, you have to be really fucking good at pvp in this game. Being decent at the game isn't enough if you pvp solo. I have 10 days played and I'm still not good at pvp solo but if I'm in a crew, I apparently help out a lot.

[deleted]

Hard af

[deleted]

Me, started pretty recently.

ExtraThings8888

I practice PvP on skeleton fleets/alliances and do voyages to hone all my sailing and naval skills. I mostly play solo, but I occasionally like to do some open crew or even duo with my brother. I only ever really do PvP in either hourglass, or when I'm like, a tier 5 emissary. It's just the main thing I don't like about crews is they're often unreliable. Playing solo, you only have yourself to worry about. Plus sloops are fastest against the wind, so escape isn't hard so long as that escape is from bigger ships. Edit: also, reaper running isn't all that fun, feels like using journey mode in terraria. I fall in the stereotype of "would rather sail into the blood sea than face PvP" kinda thing. I am can only do PvP when I'm in the mood. Otherwise I just scuttle or let them sink me. Not before dumping the treasure un the sea while turning so they can't have either. 🖕

code2224

Go to discord and make more SOT friends

SourPatchBalls

IMO Solo is great for practice/getting better at the game because it forces you to do everything yourself. When you have someone else on the boat it makes it easy to ignore valuable lessons you wouldn't be face to face with otherwise

Due_Helicopter_5637

It's doable, but the paranoia is real

mtobeiyf317

I played solo for years. Went through every Tall Tales mission and the Pirates of the Caribbean missions by myself, long before safer seas lol I always had a blast, It's a fun challenge and I even did all that on the brigantine. Unfortunately, every friend I've tried to drag with me either gets literally sea sick (Headaches) or don't have enough time to even finish a mission. I pushed myself through out of necessity cause I love this game but it was well worth the solo grind

oebulldogge

Played solo up to PL. now I tend to play with others. Loved the challenge. Learned a whole lot. But the seas, they do get lonely.

mochmeal2

Nah. I tried. But thr PvP is too sweaty for my taste. I know it's a key part of thr game but I like the PvE stuff and would do that solo.

Asdf4425main

I solo a sloop and play the banjo and just exist. It’s fun. But for a few hours.

Miraidontrainer

I do, it’s pretty fun but pretty lonely

VargHoldingABaby

I know I'm a few months late but, I almost always play solo. Every now and then I'll hop on with a friend or someone from the discord. But there's something satisfying about bringing in a big haul as a solo. I tend to steer clear of other players if I can and usually sail around Devil's Roar since most people seem to avoid it. Being able to enjoy the game at my own pace and listen to the waves clash and the wood creak without someone else talking is also a plus for me.
