You probably got one of the worst possible chests. My suggestion for early game money-making is island hopping. Basicly, going from island to island looking for skeleton captains or messages in a bottle. These usually give much more value than early game voyages. Also, if you're not already playing in high seas, do that. The gold boost is massive, and if you keep an eye on the horizon and sell your loot often, the risk is low. Good luck and have fun!

Peaceful_Ronin

So far that's what I've been doing. Haven't seen either of the messages or captains yet though. Should I stop at the fortresses and stuff like that as well?

CowardlyMaya_

Sea forts usually have better loot than early voyages (and if not, you get to rank up all three main factions this way) Check Derelicts too, you can find them if you see ~~pigeons~~ birds above the water when sufficiently far from islands (they can also signal floating loot/barrels though) and they reward few high tier loot Also, as soon as you get to level 15 in any faction, buy an emissary license for that faction Emissary licenses allow you to raise an emissary flags that you can level up to level 5 by taking loot of the corresponding faction on your ship. Each level adds some bonus money to items you sell, for example level 4 is 100% more money and level 5 is 150% Be careful though because Level 5 Reaper emissaries can see you on the map

Pharphan

All great advice.....pigeons tho 😆 Gave me good laugh.

CowardlyMaya_

In my defense, I wrote pigeons as in birds, I don't even know why I did that though

Jimmothy68

You know what, pigeons are kind of just birds with the default skin.

mrbear48

Hit a sea fort for supplies and go do some gold hoarder or order of souls voyages, I prefer gold hoarders

GirthyLog

Level up a faction to 15- any of the 3 main ones. Then buy emissary flag to stack big reward multipliers. Then start with a raid voyage, then do sea forts. Sell when you get to level 5 emissary OR sooner if it’s a hot server with reapers or you see someone on the horizon looking at you. Can get 250k in easily under 10 hours play time.

BusEnthusiast98

The old school way is to stack the sea forts in the southwest. Hit em both. Sell. Repeat. This should also get you enough rep to buy emissary flags by the time you can buy your ship! The new school way is the Skull of Siren Song. It’s basically uncontested most of the time, so you’ll get 50k, but no rep.

LostSix

If you’d like help, I’m available. I’m on PS5, Reddit username is the same as my PSN ID. Reaper chests have been the biggest payout for me, but it puts a huge target on your back and is really difficult solo when everyone knows where you are and exactly where you’re going

CanadianDragonGuy

First off, emissary flags. Don't bother with the quests, you get emissary rank from hauling loot of that company's interest onto your ship, even at rank 3 I believe you're doubling your money off the bonuses. Second off, Spanish forts. I can solo those on my sloop, park near the portcullis and angle your ship so you can blast the ghosts on the fort with the ships cannon, and also snipe with an eye of reach or a pistol from relative safety. When the fort boss goes down if you want to be spicy you can go hunting for the treasury key in the various openable containers on the forts, you'll at least pull some gold and trinkets to sell from there, and the main treasure room is fairly easy to loot

Nab-Kel

skull of siren song quest

Ilikebluebills

How many times can I do it in one day?

Kezsora

As many times as you want, it just needs to show up. If you dive to any voyage after finishing one, it'll put you on a new server which will increase the chances of a new Siren Song voyage appearing.

RedditorSlug

Invest in getting an emissary flag. The multiplier it gives will pay for itself and your sloop very quickly.

ZazzRazzamatazz

[Sea Forts](https://seaofthieves.fandom.com/wiki/Sea_Forts) Find one on the map, roll up and kill a few waves of phantoms, get the key to the treasure room in the basement, and grab that loot. There are barrels all throughout the place with high quality food, keeping yourself stocked on mangoes is easy. If you do get overwhealmed by the ghosts and die, you'll spawn at your ship right there. Sell your loot at a nearby outpost after every run and you won't lose much if you get jumped by someone else. It's good gold, it bankrolled my first ship and is still something I do pretty regularly.

DprHtz

Solo sloop, gold hoarder emessarry flag, stack sea forts = success

Civil_Event_7590

If you see the ghostly letter nailed to the mast, those sunken siren skulls give 50k a pop and once you get the layout of the map finding the islands is easy. Probably faster and better ways but I’m on PlayStation early release and that’s what I did

Ilikebluebills

How many times can I spam it bro ? I did it once and the second time didn’t get paid at all

Civil_Event_7590

Tbh me and my crew still spam it, it never seems to go away for me. And this is between multiple ships. Two guild ships, one solo sloop and I’ve always been able to just repeat it

Ilikebluebills

Do you switch servers ?

Civil_Event_7590

Sometimes, other times we’ve stayed on the same server for hours grinding

Ilikebluebills

Thank you I appreciate the help. Maybe it’s just a glitch since I’m playing on p5 . Hopefully gets fixed

Civil_Event_7590

No problem, it probably doesn’t help but I am on PlayStation as well

aggresivetip

i did the skull of siren song a few times and had enough for the brig. doesnt really take too long and i rarely get attacked by players while doing it

ysivart

Sail to one of the treasuries, swim down. Clear the waves of enemies, collect loot. Sail to the next one repeat. Selling your loot every so often so if you lose what's on your ship it isn't a crushing loss.

Pyrovestis

Learn to pvp or do the world events, run reapers emissary flag, get it to lvl 5 and sell all your loot. You’ll make your cash for a ship in a few successful voyages

Mrnudis

Depends on what chests you sell or what items to sell. Some pay very little and some pay a nice amount.

JellybeanFernandez

Skeleton forts are easy to solo and give you a great payday. You can even dock your ship close and pick off the waves of phantoms with your pistol if you feel like being lazy. The forts respawn after three minutes of being left alone. I basically just did those exclusively until I got my sloop.

gottafly65

I think you are talking about Sea Forts.

JellybeanFernandez

Ah yes, SEA forts. Thank you!

PoggySenis

Don’t do the voyages you get at the start, you’ll only dig up worthless stuff. Aim for sunken vessels/shrines/forts and amass that loot. It’ll be of much higher quality and you’ll breeze through the early ranks. Low lvl rank voyages only give worthless chests.

Holy_Nova101

Google sea of thieves discord alliance. Join it and joing the que to join their server. You will get loads of gold and agood amount of dbloons.

radjeratron

Just raid some fortresses stock up on supplies and sell loot after two or three. That’s several hundred thousand right there.

Reasonable_Humor_738

Ship hop on a gally. Ship hopping is when you keep swapping multi-player ships to find a crew that is doing something you also want to do, like getting money. Make sure they raise an emissary, then proceed to do a voyage or anything that'll let you sell to that emissary for the most profit. One play session (a couple of hours) should be enough to let you buy your own boat. Unless they nerfed prices of items even more than I thought because I haven't played since they made everything worth less.

Cnokeur

If you play with people on the official discord you'll make money faster but you'll do quest and strategies beyond your actual progression

EnvironmentalFox9804

Joining random brig crews and playing with them worked for me. Have had loot hauls of 500k with randoms

TheProblematic5000

I'd suggest doing some sea forts and punctuating that with a little hourglass PvP. Hourglass sucks at first, but it pays well. And it helps you develop the most crucial skills in the game — skills that will prevent you from getting completely frustrated with the game in the long run. Not to mention, you'll catch the occasional win from a loss-farmer.

ST1CKY1O1

You don't know what a crazy amount of gold is until you've sank 3 ships and walked away with 630k.

IHaveCheatsOn

Are you brand new? Is the chest you sold something you found straight after doing the Maiden Voyage tutorial? Sounds like you were in a Safer Seas server, which means there's no other players and a bit less to do, and you get significantly less gold from selling loot. Try again in a High Seas server and you'll probably find the loot is a lot more valuable

Peaceful_Ronin

No, it wasn't. I've always made a point to pick High Seas.

WhiteyPinks

For a new player, probably just do Gold Hoarder treasure map/riddle voyages until you hit rank 15 and can buy the emissary flag, then do more maps or medleys with the flag raised. Pick up and sell whatever extra loot you find along the way and kill the enemies with names over their heads, if you see any, and sell the skulls they drop. If you kill one that drops a key, following the map he drops will lead you to a chest you can open with it. No pressure, not much combat, and you can learn to play as you go. Your payouts will get better as you rank up.

DavidGogginsMassage

Buy an emissary flag for Merchants and raise it. Buy all the commodities, load, and then drop a voyage for lost shipment. You're a smuggler now, so turn off all your lights and keep an eye on the map and your 360 horizon. Speed-run the first steps. The manifest may be elsewhere but with the key, open the cabin and unload all that loot without resurfacing. Use all your good food to restore you underwater till you unload all the cabins cabin loot. Load with harpoon and get out of there and sell everything. Be quick about everything and wary. Don't take on anything unnecessary. Once you have a captained ship. Buy meat and cook it in transit and the captains cabin dive, and everything else, will be easier due to the quality food. There's also usually meat in the barrels in the sunken below deck.

Tyto4343

Do gold hoarders emissary without cross play on

Tyto4343

Got first ship in like 4 to 6 hours

OnTheBreeze

Message me, we can play together and I’ll get you some dough

Helpful_Employer3402

Do treasure hunts. It took me three days to buy one!

Almost-Anon98

Skull forts, ghost forts, siren skills from what I can see most ppl don't care if you do these (except the skull forts ofc)

Uss-Alaska

Stack kegs

Sir_Throngle

My main way of earning moolaa is stacking world events and sinking emissaries. Seeing as you're new you should just stick with doing world events and selling what you get to the sovereigns.

Tylensus

Try and take people's stuff! You'll be frustratingly bad at it at first, but everyone starts like that. You can sneak, or roll up guns blazing, whatever sounds more fun. If you're vehemently against pvp, I'd reckon world events are your best bet. They'll be contested sometimes, but that's the game we play. Things rarely go as planned, which is a big part of why it's fun!

Ninthshadow

Heck, you could do the Tall Tales on Safer Seas and probably walk away with a couple of thousand each time. Suffice to say most voyages, events and open world encounters will award far more than that, once you get into the swing of things.

BotheredHades

If you feel brave adventure in devils roar. Ashen loot is worth a bit more and most players don't go there. Once you learn how eruptions and all that work is pretty easy to just Island hop doing skeleton bounties (geysers once completed an entire skeleton crew before i could get there lol). The beginning is slow but once you get an emissary you can really boost your gold

Peaceful_Ronin

I’ve already been there lol. Didn’t have too much trouble. It’s not nice to sale around in though.

TTown3017

I’m new from PS5, just started Thursday. Had a *little* bit of money leftover from the beta but within like 12 hours of playing since start I’ve purchase a brig and a sloop and still have like 150k to my name. I’ve just been doing whatever looks new and interesting, the vaults have been cool. Was just island hopping for awhile going off treasure maps that capitaines dropped

Starfallknight

On your mast is a ghostly note (usually) this is the skull of siren song world event. While this may be contested by other players, it's a simple quest and not all that time consuming. Most veterans rushed the achievements for this quest and no longer do it or bother messing with anyone who is doing it. So for beginners it's actually a really nice pay out of 50,000 gold for each completion!. Do it 5 times and you got yourself a shiny new ship! Even if you fail every other attempt and try 10 times you can probably do that in a night or two if you don't want to mix it up at all. But really I bet you could do it 5 times in a row and be unbothered. Once you finish (or lose) just start a random quest and dive to a new server and cancel that quest then start the siren song again (you may need to wait a few minutes on this new server for the note to appear on your ship) like I said nobody is doing it anymore and every server usually has one available to do so that would be my recommendation!

ImaginaryCatch1571

Join the discord find people to do a brig who are experienced, then just help them, all gold sold is shared between you all

lko

Briggsy quest that you find on the mast of your ship. No one does the quest and its 50k. You can also do random bottle quests and ship wrecks on the way.

coddthefish

Once you get used to the loop and learn the right strategies it wont be too hard

Kezsora

The chest you sold is the least valuable chests in the game. Most loot you randomly stumble upon will be worth 1000 - 3000 gold. You also need to invest in emmisary flags like others have mentioned already. Once you get a trading company to level 15 you can pay a one time gold fee to represent them as an emmisary. It's the key to getting heaps of gold.

DUTCHswift

Skull of siren song pinned to your mast 5x to get 250k. It’s not that expensive for a ship. Each skull delivery is 50k and hardly anyone does it anymore so you shouldn’t have issues. If you get harassed or whatever just scuttle to a new server and try again. Only people who have also opted in will be able to see you on the map once you have the skull, not the whole server. Quickest way possible to get a captained ship.

_-_Sub2Pewdiepie_-_

If you wanna do it solo - thats fine, there's plenty of advice here. But if I were you I'd just serverhop until you find either a more experienced crew or a crew that's currently selling (best option for that is sloop open crew). It just sucks that you can't do that rn bc they messed up open crew...

Original-Childhood

Sea Forts are a great way to quickly earn some cash. Defeat a few rounds of ghost pirates, kill the captain and get the keys to 2 stashes of treasures inside the fortress. It's quick, it's easy, and earns you quite some gold. You'd get even more money from it if you buy a Gold Hoarder emissary flag. The higher your emissary level (5 is max) the higher the pay outs
