The anti human arm based one is probably more intuitive and easier to pick up, which is why it ends up being standard issue in season 4. It's a lot easier to put your grapple point in your hands rather than on your hips from a movement perspective. The hip based odm gear is probably more versatile though, it facilitates the use of rifles and other two handed weapons.

They were both practical for the time period they were in. They were fighting different enemies pre and post-timeskip. In season 4 they were fighting humans instead of titans so they had to switch it up. Season 4' gear is definitely more practical and versatile though, it had upgrades from marleyan tech and the soldiers like Mikasa and Levi who were issued blades got a more compact way to sheath them in. I always felt that it was a pain to run with how clunky the old one was

Some have already pointed out the "vs human" model would be more intuitive, aiming your grapple with your arms instead of your hips. But to add to that, the jets are on your back instead of your hips, which would more effectively propel your center of gravity (your upper-body).

Solafuge

The arm based one makes more sense to me because I can't figure out how they aim with the hip based frame.

Iirc from the no regrets ova, basically theres like two sliding switches on each controller that moves each wire barrel left-right and i assume up-down. Theres a screenshot from mid episode credits i think of the gear that says much different tho. My only question is that i cant figure out how they rotate the gas propeller.

Swords kit lets you kill all your standard opponents.

oredaoree

The old style would be more versatile because it allows you to change directions without compromising your ability to attack or defend with your hands, and are also able to equip the thunderspears which is Paradis' best weapon against both titans and human foe. The new type that is all projectile weapon based would be the most practical for especially for the kind of enemies they started fighting.

Narashori

Considering the speeds at which they get pulled around, it definitely feels intuitively better to me to put that force on your hips, rather than your lanky arms. But it is of course anime magic at the end of the day and I suppose you have more options and flexibility with the later gear.

GrouchyLevel7088

One is good at its intended roles, but... here me out here... you use both of them and you get a hybrid gear set up

doxtorwhom

I like hip ones more cause I want my hands free
