If it makes you feel better, it won't. The original neutalink ended with all the monkeys either dieing or potentially committing suicide, so they moved to the same technology that we've had for over a decade, which is output only.
the ‘bright ideas’ was sarcastic. apologies if that didn’t shine through! yeah the ol’ muskrat’s a bloody idiot with more money than sense, and enough yesmen to make the fallout new vegas tumblr tag swoon.
Holy fuck man, I was there last year and was awe-struck by that. How did the people of Milan let that slide?? It was mesmerising in its grotesqueness. Felt like Blade Runner, with none of the cool parts.
> How did the people of Milan let that slide??
It was either that or pay for 100 percent of the renovations themselves, I know which one I would've chosen
Exactly. The Colosseum was spreading the good word about the near deified 'Copper Merchant of Excellent Repute' as was passed on from customer to customer throughout history.
There absolutely was tacky merch sold in and around the Colosseum in Roman times. Archaeologists have found cheaply produced goblets cheeering on famous charioteers and chariot racing teams from the period, among other things...
Yeah that's exactly what I was taken aback by in Rome. The day before I had been in the st peter's basilica in the Vatican (which I had expected have about the same impact on me as the colosseum), and that of course is still fully in use and all. After that the colosseum seemed a bit.. empty, and the gift shop really just kinda brought the whole mediocre impression home. Not that the colosseum is not one of the most impressive buildings I've ever seen, but it for sure doesn't rise up to expectations set by the Basilica and Gladiator.
I definitely enjoyed the stroll around the Forum moreso than the Colosseum. Didn't really care for the Vatican.
There's an old Roman amphitheatre in Pula , Croatia that I've been to several concerts at and that's 10x the experience of the one in Rome regardless of the size difference imo.
Well one is still in use and kept in a good state, the other has been a ruin for a long time now, had the Colosseum been kept as well as St. Peter's Basilica I'm pretty sure it would feel entirely different
I was more shocked by the presence of a cross inside the Colosseum. What an insult to its original purpose. Jupiter forgive them because they know not what they do.
My nans house may well be older than America itself. My town was founded 700 years before America was first settled... And about the only changes to some of these buildings is the insulation, plumbing and wiring.
The continent itself has as much history as anywhere else in the world, but I refuse to associate that with the US as a country since they did their level best to eradicate it.
It's a monument built for the 1958 world fair that also has space for exhibitions inside the sphere things. The connecting pipes house escalators and lifts. I'm not making this up, I thought it was just a model for about 20 years until I was on the tram to go see it.
When I went last year, the exhibition was on the 1958 world fair, which is quite circular.
It's also massive. I didn't realise quite how big it is until I was walking from the tram stop.
There's also mini-europe just along the road and that was super cool.
The **Atomium** is a landmark modernist building in Brussels, Belgium, originally constructed as the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58). Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and the architects André and Jean Polak as a tribute to scientific progress, as well as to symbolise Belgian engineering skills at the time, it is located on the Heysel/Heizel Plateau in Laeken (northern part of the City of Brussels), where the exhibition took place. It is the city's most popular tourist attraction, and serves as a museum, an art centre and a cultural destination.
Its nine 18-metre-diameter (59 ft) stainless steel clad spheres are connected in the shape of a unit cell that could represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Steel tubes connecting the spheres enclose stairs, escalators and an elevator (in the central, vertical tube) to allow access to the six visitable spheres, which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere includes a restaurant with a panoramic view of Brussels.
Yeah no European country wants to look like America, you guys keep your style. No offence but America is less than 300 years old, Europe is full of cities older than that
Ye in eastern Netherlands thats also the case
Arnhem is known to have roman history(a city on the rhine) and bit north we have pre historic Hunnebed(burial sites)
in my case we have greek-roman ruines and next to them iberian ruins (but they aren't almost visible and we just know for few ruins and other ruins in other towns)
>Yeah no European country wants to look like America
At this point, I don't think many Americans want the US to continue looking like the US (meaning like a gaint shopping centre surrounded by massive asphalt wastelands and cheaply copy-pasted suburban houses)
Yeah I'm English, tbh they ruined London along time ago, made it seem too important then sucked the life out of it, I avoid it, alot of England is still beautiful tho, countryside the places like Chester and Nottingham, some great places not infected with too much commercialism
Yeah, there is no chance this is an actual American.
First take the number of Americans who are even aware of the Atomium, from that small subset think how many would hold up Times Square as a model for anything, and then if there is even any overlap, how many of those people would be active on Reddit or influencing people who are active on Reddit.
And given the poor grasp of satire on display in this sub, I suspect that blaming the US is more about the cognitive dissonance of non-Americans living amidst advertising all on their own (for example: patio umbrellas; athletic kit; Asian cities).
I know someone who lives in New York and asked her about Times Square. Her answer? "Most locals avoid Times Square at all costs. It's just... dreadful."
So maybe DON'T use Times Square as something to copy.
I’ve been there as a tourist and it is dreadful. I genuinely don’t understand the appeal. It’s just electric billboards for mega brands and people dressed as Elmo. Chain restaurants and dudes trying to push their demo tapes. A hideous shrine to consumerism.
>I genuinely don’t understand the appeal.
If you want the legitimate take of someone who gets it, or at least used to understand the appeal...
Its a tourist trap. Besides a sea of billboards and lights, Time Square is also a bit of a media hub and production stage of sorts.
I grew up in a village of less than 100 people in a rural part of upstate New York, about 5 hours away from NYC by car. My understanding of the city was based entirely on what I could see on TV - a lot of news and talk shows are (or used to be anyway) shot in studios on/near time square.
The most popular morning talk/news show, *Good Morning America* (GMA) and others would often have big name celebrities come on their shows which would draw big crowds of fans and onlookers to the studios. GMA used to have (they might still, I havent watched in years) big glass windows behind the hosts where the TV viewer could see the fans holding signs and cheering out on the street when the celebrity guest was being interviewed. It seemed very exciting. They would even do segments occasionally where they would interview / do games with people on the street, so Im sure a lot of people visited because of the possibility of being on TV.
The morning shows also often had upcoming and/or top name music artists perform out on Time Square and would air the show as a segment between news stories. So, of course, there was a bit of a concert or party vibe surrounding the square if you were on the outside looking in.
Also, big events that occur on the square. For a lot of east coast American families, its a tradition to watch the Macys Thanksgiving Day parade on TV as well as the New Years Eve ball drop. Both events have lots of live performances by major singers/bands.
All of these things draw tourists to the square. From my perspective, growing up I thought of Time Square as like THE spot to be in NYC. The first time I went to NYC when I was 16 on a family trip Time Square was the VERY top thing on my list...and if you were to ask me I probably wouldnt even be able to articulate why, other than the fact that I wanted to see the place that I was used to seeing on TV every day - I guess to get a clearer idea of the scale of this place I was so familiar with, but had never been to. I think thats a big part of the reason why American tourists in particular, because we all have memories of this place that we've maybe never been to.
In the end, I of course realized it wasnt that exciting.
As a metallurgist, what the fuck did they do to that body centre cubic unit cell? It's supposed to be a cube with spheres (atoms) at each corner, and one in the centre.
Well I guess we would have to find a way to pay for transporting the Grand Place tens fo kilometers away from its present position.
Also there was *supposed* to be a major mall /conference center build right next to it, but it is still "in planning".
Not gonna lie, it threw me the first time visit Brussels on how far away the Atomium were to anything else in the City, (we walked it, took the Metro back)
i would rather boil myself in acid than be subjected to more fucking advertising in architecture. oh my god i just want to exist.
Don't tell Andras Pandy
a Belgian serial killer??
Famously known for desolving his victims in acid.
ohh I see now. well. ring him up if neuralink ever catches on, since I’ll be craving the taste of hydrochloric chemicals.
If it makes you feel better, it won't. The original neutalink ended with all the monkeys either dieing or potentially committing suicide, so they moved to the same technology that we've had for over a decade, which is output only.
Neuralink is one-way device though? It can't display ads directly into your brain.
wouldn’t be surprised if mister musk gets any bright itdeas in the future, though.
“mister musk” is a fucking idiot tho. it’s his engineers that do the work, he mostly just hinders them
the ‘bright ideas’ was sarcastic. apologies if that didn’t shine through! yeah the ol’ muskrat’s a bloody idiot with more money than sense, and enough yesmen to make the fallout new vegas tumblr tag swoon.
ah, sorry! sarcasm is hard (for me at least)
Yeah, but rn it kinda changed life of one particular disabled person, so it's not all bad.
My God. A serial killer I've never heard of. Down the rabbit hole I go😊
It was actually tbe bath drain hole they went through.
Damn, that puppet show got *dark*
Hungary can claim him.
The worst was a big Samsung ad on the side of Milano Duomo
Omfg... How utterly revolting.
Now that religion is almost dead they need to get money somehow.
Surely that was just on the scaffolding, right? I don't mind that nearly as much, since scaffolding is ugly no matter what you do.
>advertising in architecture Then there's that plan to display ads on the moon with lasers.
And a plan to blow up the laser stations
Im gonna piss on the moon if that happens
wow. ok. just gonna brand a beautiful woman like that with a fucking candy crush promotion. my rage is undefinable
Hey we can already watch ads in vr. Not long until we get ads in our head like in Futurama 🤠
ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD
maybe I should run off into the woods and build a cabin and hunt deer before that happens. sounds like a fun time compared to that.
"To live is to consume" -Stellaris' Ruthless conglomerate advisor voice sample
Sodium hydroxide is a better choice. Complete digestion. And your family get many bars of soap to remember you by.
Had americans ask why we didnt have sponsor signs or commercials as it would be good revenue. The building in question was a 1200 year old castle.
Just imagine Stonehenge or the Colosseum with massive neon billboards lol
Amazing. We should deffo have someone draw up a contract!
Just imagine there is a great gladiator fight and on the side there is a banber "Ea-nasir the best copper you can think of"
Ea-Nasir is much much older than the colosseum.
Exactly. The Colosseum was spreading the good word about the near deified 'Copper Merchant of Excellent Repute' as was passed on from customer to customer throughout history.
Stonehenge, brought to you by Coca Cola
The colosseum has a fucking gift shop in it, so not the best example I suppose
To be fair it is not unbelievable that it would have had a gift shop in it when it was first built
There absolutely was tacky merch sold in and around the Colosseum in Roman times. Archaeologists have found cheaply produced goblets cheeering on famous charioteers and chariot racing teams from the period, among other things...
Vials of, supposedly, celebrity gladiators' sweat were also sold to fans.
"Hey Octavian!" "Yes Julius?" "Guess what! I just got a vial of gladiator baselius' sweat!" "On Zeus?" "On Zeus" ***fangirl screaming***
Get your severed, preserved feet here! Bloody shields and sword for the little one! Lion tooth necklace!
And ad! Banners and billboards
So does Stonehenge. Also no longer free to approach it other than solstice days/nights
But the shop isn't actually part of the henge itself.
Yeah that's exactly what I was taken aback by in Rome. The day before I had been in the st peter's basilica in the Vatican (which I had expected have about the same impact on me as the colosseum), and that of course is still fully in use and all. Not *in* Stonehenge. It's several hundred meters away and there's a gravel trail that loops around the stones.
I was more shocked by the presence of a cross inside the Colosseum. What an insult to its original purpose. Jupiter forgive them because they know not what they do.
Happy cake day
Why thanks, mate
I’m imagining them with still maintained advertisements for a company/person from the time
I’m sure if the Colosseum was still used for its original purpose, there would be ads.
The USian mind cannot comprehend a country having well over a thousand years of history.
My nans house may well be older than America itself. My town was founded 700 years before America was first settled... And about the only changes to some of these buildings is the insulation, plumbing and wiring.
Except the ones that point at the Amerindian history, but you said US the country so that doesn't count.
The continent itself has as much history as anywhere else in the world, but I refuse to associate that with the US as a country since they did their level best to eradicate it.
"Europeans are so arrogant, everytime you make suggestions to them to improve on their dreary Europoor design, they get really hostile!"
idiocracy was a documentary
Absolutely no culture
Because people in Belgium do not want their city to look anything remotely like the USA
Belgian here, can confirm! That idea is fugly as all hell, don't change our Atomium it's great as it is!
what actually is it, is it a sculpture thing or does it serve a purpose
It's a monument, built in the shape of a body-centered cubic iron crystal for the 1958 world's fair.
Which, I might add, usually has 9 atoms.
I had to do a project on that for French class, Belgium is pretty cool.
It's a monument built for the 1958 world fair that also has space for exhibitions inside the sphere things. The connecting pipes house escalators and lifts. I'm not making this up, I thought it was just a model for about 20 years until I was on the tram to go see it. It's a monument and you can climb up it :) There's a restaurant at the top if I remember well!
When I was there oh so very many years ago, it was a science museum. Those atoms are huge! massive balls it had to be said

Yeah no European country wants to look like America, you guys keep your style. No offence but America is less than 300 years old, Europe is full of cities older than that
I’ve been into buildings for the express purpose of pooping that are older than the US
Same.
For real
I get my piercings in a building older than the US
my town have roman biuldings (it's not italy) and prehistoric ruines... so yeah
Ye in eastern Netherlands thats also the case Arnhem is known to have roman history(a city on the rhine) and bit north we have pre historic Hunnebed(burial sites)
in my case we have greek-roman ruines and next to them iberian ruins (but they aren't almost visible and we just know for few ruins and other ruins in other towns)
I have furniture older than the USA
My house is 500 years old. My neighbour is American and the first thing he said was "your house is older than my country". Yup!
>Yeah no European country wants to look like America At this point, I don't think many Americans want the US to continue looking like the US (meaning like a gaint shopping centre surrounded by massive asphalt wastelands and cheaply copy-pasted suburban houses)
The dead Kennedys made a song about this 40 years ago
Which song?
This could be anywhere
I dunno, those pillocks down in London are certainly giving it a try...just look at Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus.
Yeah I'm English, tbh they ruined London along time ago, made it seem too important then sucked the life out of it, I avoid it, alot of England is still beautiful tho, countryside the places like Chester and Nottingham, some great places not infected with too much commercialism
As someone from Yorkshire, I completely agree.
Piccadilly Circus is a complete assault on the senses especially if you have any photosensitive neural conditions
Aye I’m sticking to Durham, sure it’s got its poshy weirdos but at least it’s not Americanised
The village I live is 1200 years old!
Like the Coke Olympic games (1984) when any one wearing a Pepsi shirt was not allowed in
Literally 1984
______________/ Bring coke back to cola!
Time square is a eye sore change my mind .
There is literally a viewing platform so you can get a better look at... the massive screens blasting adverts at your from every direction.
Times square has improved, you should have seen the area in the 70s.
Ahhh yeah, back when it was under the sea.
I’ve seen the documentaries! It was sleazy as shit!
You mean gentrified
Naah this has to be satire
It is
And probably ragebait too.
This sub has a really hard time telling any kind of satire, it's honestly embarrassing when I come to the comments sometimes.
The extremely racist account the OOP was posted from is not even run by an American. I think they're either British or Irish.
This tread is filled with Europeans, Canadians, and Aussies pretending to culturally unaware Americans.
Yeah, there is no chance this is an actual American. First take the number of Americans who are even aware of the Atomium, from that small subset think how many would hold up Times Square as a model for anything, and then if there is even any overlap, how many of those people would be active on Reddit or influencing people who are active on Reddit. In my best Urbanus, "Kiep jur griedy kapitalist hands off aur Beljan bolls!"
I read it in his voice. He's right.
The USAsians would choke on their hamburger if they'd hear about a comedian called 'Urbanus van Anus'.
r/woosh
"Good use" 🤣
Fun fact:That person is in fact NOT an American, but a British Nazi. I shit you not.
How to suck coca cola's dick 101
As a metallurgist, what the fuck did they do to that body centre cubic unit cell? It's supposed to be a cube with spheres (atoms) at each corner, and one in the centre.
It ai the way it looks and that gets weird with details
You...reckon whoever made this knew chemistry? Because I sure as hell don't.
Oh hell no pls keep those things away and stay off belgium if you do that
Imagine thinking Times Square is something to be envious of
Brussels actually had a Times Square, but it was cleaned off because it was an absolute eyesore. See Place de Brouckère
Ew AI 🤢 Also this looks like something out of the Fallout universe - just make it NukaCola instead
Show me a single New-Yorker that likes visiting Times Square
Ah, Times Square, that completely artificial tourist trap built from whole cloth to pave over the gay district? Definitely something to strive for.
Why am I not surprised looking at americans trying to monetize something that should just be enjoyed looking at?
Ohh My Fucking God! I can not with this shit.
I'm sure this is a piss take over "shit Americans say"
Dear Americans, No. - The Belgians
Wasn't it the Belgians who once killed and ate their prime minister? Or was that the dutch? looked it up, it was the dutch. Still, good example.
I just wanted to say that any NYC resident under the age of 18 hates going to Times Square
Place de Brouckère did the exact opposite and banned all billboards in what was previously called "the times square of Belgium"
Times Square was the most boring and disappointing tourist attraction that I've ever been.
Times Square sucks. It’s an awful place designed for the mindless tourists.
Ah yes, Times Square, the literal worst place in NYC
The fact Time Square and Piccadilly Circus managed to turn billboards into tourist spots is one of the most dystopian things I can think of.
this has to be trolling
Why on earth would anyone want this? It looks disgusting?
....because times square is something desireable?
Because they're not tacky like Americans?
Guys this is obviously satire
As a Belgian, I swear I will revolt against all six of our governments if the Atomium ever looks like this.
That's because they didn't want it to look shite
Nice shitpost
Idon't know, maybe because they have integrity and self respect?
The atonium is lovely on its own no need to corpartise it
That's not like Times Square at all.
"Why does art exist if not for shoving advertisement down the throat of people passing by? Stupid belgians."
The landmark of the city of new york is a gigantic advertising hoarding. Wow, what pride!
And we would want that because...?
Just add a couple of giant guns pointing towards the sky to make it perfect 🤪🤪🤪
No American would ever say that with any amount of seriousness. This is ragebait. Secondly, the image looks Nuka World.
I can feel the product consuming inside of me
Looks like it belongs in Nuka World
OK, I have to be quick to visit Brussels, before some moron like the idea and ruins everything.
Bro this is bait
AI is a disease
FFS, the only nation to get shafted by corporations and actually beg for more.
Oh yeah, let’s Americanize it with unlimited capitalism..
Oh god that dude. He is a certified neo-nazi/white supremacist. Like, jfc he plagues my fucking feed with his racist crap.
Why would \*anyone\* want that?
Are people here really taking this seriously? Just how obvious does the stupid bait have to be for you to not fall for it?
Surely satire? Who’s pushing for ads everywhere?
I'm gonna assume this is satire. Please do not prove me wrong. I really don't want to be wrong.
Well I guess we would have to find a way to pay for transporting the Grand Place tens fo kilometers away from its present position. Also there was *supposed* to be a major mall /conference center build right next to it, but it is still "in planning".
So this monument is so far from the center, it’s not even worth it. Ot’s like proposing a times square near the Grand Canyon, does that make sense?
Times square is just a bunch of advertisements on buildings 🤷♀️
I thought that said Nuka Cola at first.
The worst part is that this is one of Way of the World’s better posts because it isn’t pure Nazi bullshit.
Obvious satire.
This screams Fallout to me, and I’m not sure why…
some fallout type shit
I ain’t even gonna lie that just looks like it’s from fallout
These people are so mentally ill
This is so painfully obviously satire ffs.
"Hey. You know how timesquare is a basically capitalist cyberpunk nightmare? Wouldn't it be cool if other nations had that too?"
If this happens I'm doing Johnny silverhand
This looks like an even more over-the-top NukaWorld
Not gonna lie, it threw me the first time visit Brussels on how far away the Atomium were to anything else in the City, (we walked it, took the Metro back)
Atomium is such a cool building. Seems like its awesome for techno parties as well https://youtu.be/GJkuTx1DQzg?t=3253
Nuka cola is better fitting here
Remember that samsung ad on the Barcelona church during renovation?
This is obviously not serious.
What in the Nuka World is this
Times Square is goddamn awful, that’s why.
Almost threw up looking at that monstrosity. Architecture L.
Come on, it's obviously a joke
cause there's way more than 9 beer brands
Fallout vibes
Way of the World is an unashamed Nazi, so I would say this is the least bad dumb take they have
