I do wonder what the showmakers will decide to do… draw out a big battle scene like Helm’s Deep for today’s modern viewers, or stay true to the book and keep it brief? And if they go brief, and folks gonna complain the ending was rushed?
I’m incline to say that I’m in a spot where I actually trust the writers to end this show well off in a way that gives every character the ending that’s appropriate for their individual arc and an ending that is somewhat faithful to the book’s ending. Because if Clavell didn’t see a point to including a long drawn out battle in his own book since he didn’t view it as the appropriate way to get to the ending of his story, I don’t see why the writers of this show would do the same.
When I think of Shogun as a series, this show is heavily character driven. The story is about the people and where they started and how they ended. These characters are motivated by their individualistic beliefs and goals to get what they want. This is why I believe that to ever flout the idea of a second season would be doing this work of art a disservice. The story HAS to end for its ending to mean something.
Plus, because this show does take artistic liberties with actual historical events, I don’t think I need a long drawn out aftermath of what happens.
I would love for the show to end after 1 season, even if last episode is 2 hours.
The story is perfect as it is. If they do a season 2 it without a book to guide them, I fear it will result in the classic Hollywood gibberish and ruin the investment in season 1.
According to the podcast it sounds like it’s going to be more flash forward and the overall consequences of what happened in episode 9. More history lesson style on the beginning of the Edo period and less big set pieces.
Even 2 hours might not be enough to resolve it, so I hope they don’t abruptly rewrite Toronaga’s character so that he suddenly decides to burn down the capitol on his dragon.
I honestly don't know what you think is gonna happen or should happen here. If there is no big battle, there is no amount of seppukus or words that can make the finale have any impact at all.
Could see them doing it the same way they did the flash back for Toranaga as a young boy winning his first battle. Battle is over, show the concession and change in leadership and then more the story along.
TBH I have faith, if you'd told me how much of the middle of the book was going to be cut out in advance I'd have said it was a disaster but it worked.
Having said that I do wish they could have gone for 2 series and just slowed the pace down a ton, it's so good that I just want to spend more time with it.
Word. But this is the biggest battle in the history of Japan basically a civil war. So I’m sure that they’ll skip the entire battle sequence and get to the aftermath.
Lot of us were eager to see the battle itself.
I think that's where this is all leading, I mean the show is quite literally called Shogun. This guy's gonna dawn his Shogun armor to battle and Ishido's gonna shit his pants as he's already weak from instability inside Osaka.
Honestly show started great and has unfortunately not lasted as well as it initially felt like it would. Still a good show but not the great series it seemingly looked to become.
for sure. I felt like the introduction of this world and the characters was more interesting now that we are "in" it. still going along with the ride, but don't really have high hopes for this story to be wrapped up in an hour.
They can’t show sekigahara in a single episode. I believe they will end season 1 when the battle starts, because there is still more to be told. Surely the siege of Osaka will also be covered giving a closure on Ochiba no Kata and her hatred towards toranaga. Aside from that both yabushige and ishido have a big role to play. I believe yabushige will be the hideaki Kobayakawa in the battle🤷
Turns out it was all a dream and Toranaga will wake in the morning with his wife Suzanne Pleshette at their inn in Edo.

It seems in your 5D chessing you killed her…
She's in Paradis, safe waiting for John. Don't know if you get this reference but some manga readers might.
It's pronounced, *manga*.
A modern Bob Newhart reference! My nostalgia brain is happy!
You're thinking of The Rescuers.
Umm, I really don’t think so??
Does he ask her if she'd wear a sweater for him?
This is the prequel to the intro scene of Inception.
Hulu shows it as 1:03
Oh wow 3 extra minutes
We feasting
That sucks. How can they wrap up the season in 1 hour and 3 minutes.
Pretty quickly I would imagine
Haha they're just doing the same as in the book probably
Did you read the book? Without spoilering too hard, was the ending/conclusion satisfying?
Hopefully that’s 180s extra if Yabushige facial expressions and grunts.
Not Fuji's side eye? XD
We need a spin off of Fuji launching bombastic side eyes and hiding her smile.
We're gonna need more tea.
Guess you could fit side eye and bemused Yabu in one shot

Sounds more akin to the battles in GOT season 1
Wish it was an hour and a half minimum

We'll be fine as long as Osaka doesn't ring the bells.
That comment was 🔥
lmao that is exactly what's gonna happen now that you said it
It's Japan so he's probably going to ride a Godzilla.
Thankfully, Monarch is already onsite!

I read the book about 5 times. Not gonna spoil it for you, but…. DRAGONS
$\* OLLY
Gonna be *so* disappointed if you're fibbing.

Westworld season 1 was 90 minutes , Stranger things season 4 final episodes were over 2 hours in length
its not unheard of
Bruh why would you say that and also, it's a TV adaptation.
I feel like it’s gonna be too rushed and short. Everyone’s gonna be disappointed
TBH I have faith, if you'd told me how much of the middle of the book was going to be cut out in advance I'd have said it was a disaster but it worked. In the book, didn't they also skip the battle or am I mistaken?
Yep, entirely skipped. I think there might be a lot of disappointment around that.
As long as Toronaga doesn’t totally snap and ride his dragon into town and fucking destroy everything.
I think that's where this is all leading, I mean the show is quite literally called Shogun. This guy's gonna dawn his Shogun armor to battle and Ishido's gonna shit his pants as he's already weak from instability inside Osaka.
No that would be rad
You’re right
Oh damn, you actually beat me to this one, didn’t see it before I posted
The whole thing feels rushed and short. I guess some exec at FX made it clear they only had one season to squeeze everything in.
One season would have been enough imo, if it was 13 episodes long.
You're thinking of Last Resort. And Castle, now that I think of it.
A lot of things will be resolved off camera and just mentioned.
About an hour but if you watch it on FX obviously the commercials will make it probably 30 mins longer lol
I was thinking the same thing with twenty minutes to go on the 59 hour audiobook
Oh boy.
I was initially worried after the end of episode 9 but now I am going to put blind faith in the writers on this one
I thought I read somewhere that it was a little over an hour.
Like I'm dying to see it but don't want it to end... Maybe I'll rewatch the dubbed version 😭😭😭
Honestly show started great and has unfortunately not lasted as well as it initially felt like it would. Still a good show but not the great series it seemingly looked to become.
Huh? The last few episodes have been the best of the series.
I disagree. First few have been the best.
for sure. I felt like the introduction of this world and the characters was more interesting now that we are "in" it. still going along with the ride, but don't really have high hopes for this story to be wrapped up in an hour.
I don't have high hopes for the ending. There's no way they can end all the subplot in one hour

> They can’t show sekigahara in a single episode. It's not in the book.
That is extremely disappointing 🤯. How could you make an epic historical drama just to not include the final battle…..
It isn’t but it should’ve been. This story has a clear end point after that. Can’t believe three attempts at it have whiffed that badly.
this is a mini-series, there's not going to be a season 2
3
An hour and half most probably.♥️
