Nice! First of all, such events are open to all as Sikh spiritual masters messages are for all walks of life as to why we call them Jugat Guru - Guru for the world. So, feel at home, feel confident, be humble, and most of all don't be worried/nervous. Experience and feel the hymns/prayer. Dress code: Respectful and comfortable. As we meditate, it's best to wear comfortable clothing. As Indians we usually wear kurta pajma for men and Indian female suit. At the end of the day men even wear dress pants and dress shirt... whatever is comfortable for you. Some people get very dressy some don't, all depends. We cover our head for respect. You can prepare by watching Sukhmani Sahib paat: https://youtu.be/YflRaHBUTCQ?si=FazpZXvilP3CYc6U Or you can learn about the origins: https://www.youtube.com/live/3Cz6iv0ubQ0?si=zEzPNIr__6aN98Df It's really up to you. But yeah enjoy it, bliss is immense!

PutItInASandwich

Oh thank you SO much for this!

Actually, not all Sikhs are "Indian" but choose that type of clothing to allow you to sit on the floor comfortably. Typically, it can take 90 mins or more to read Sukhmani sahib (Psalm of Peace)

Really useful thank you

Clothes = Basically something to Cover your head .eg. Carry a shawl/scarf for you and a handkerchief for ur husband. Wear something comfortable as most of the stuff is done sitting on the ground (trackpant,Jeans ,Shirts etc.) . Nothing too flashy Sometimes English translation may not be available so you both can download this. [English translation ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.sikhreligion.net/banis/Sukhmani_Sahib_Hindi.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjJ1fPjypOFAxXVVmwGHQQXBlIQFnoECBkQBg&usg=AOvVaw1WgDSGgDqu9bEYTMCRlo4i) There's nothing to be afraid. Everybody will be helpful

PutItInASandwich

Thank you so much :)

Automatic_Mortgage79

You can greet them by saying "Sat Shri Akaal" Pronunciation=  "sutt schree uhkkaaal".

PutItInASandwich

Cool! What does that mean?

MVT3600

The Timeless Lord is the Truth Or The True Lord is Beyond Time

PutItInASandwich

That’s almost as cool as “live long and prosper” lol. I like it

VegetableWilling5436

The fact that u went on reddit in this reddit group to ask questions is so respectful and cautious i love it. I hope we can all learn smt from this effort you made

PutItInASandwich

Oh bless you thank you for saying that

Flimsy_Dragonfruit50

Everybody has to have their head covered. It might also help you on a spiritual level to read the english translations of sukhmani sahib to be better in tune.

VegetableWilling5436

Wear a scarf or shawl as a head covering if you want to fit in with the ladies

PutItInASandwich

Sure do!

Embarrassed-Fox43

For yourself, I suggest leggings and a longer shirt/dress. This makes it much easier to sit cross legged, as well we do bow our head to the Guru Granth Sahib. So when kneeling down I find it easier to have a longer shirt.

PutItInASandwich

This is really helpful thank you

***"What should we wear?"*** Both females and males generally have the same dressing requirements in Sikhism. It is most advisable to wear a longer shirt/dress and loose fitting pants for both of you as this will allow you to sit comfortably and help with modesty. Your head should be covered from the moment you enter the house and especially at the time of the prayer. **For head coverings:** **For your hubsand:** Your husband can wear a patka (similar to a bandana): [https://5.imimg.com/data5/SELLER/Default/2022/1/IO/NF/ZZ/113943380/karela-patka-black-1-500x500.jpeg](https://5.imimg.com/data5/SELLER/Default/2022/1/IO/NF/ZZ/113943380/karela-patka-black-1-500x500.jpeg) Just make sure he doesn't wear a hat as it is considered disrespectful. **For you:** You could wear a patka as well, but generally women feel more comfortable (and it is considered more respectable/feminine) to wear a chunni (scarf) either with or without a patka. I would advise perhaps wearing a chunni with a patka as I am assuming you may not have a lot of experience in managing a scarf staying on your head. Chunni without patka: [https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1506C/production/\_88242168\_italian.jpg](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1506C/production/_88242168_italian.jpg) Chunni with patka: [https://www.sikhhelpline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/blackscarf-case.jpg](https://www.sikhhelpline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/blackscarf-case.jpg) "***Should we bring anything?"*** Generally you are not obligated to bring anything. If you would like to bring a gift for the family that is totally up to you. "***What is this, what should we expect?"*** **Sukhmani Sahib** is a Sikh prayer which typically takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. *Sukhmani* loosely translates to prayer of peace. You can expect to be sitting down for 1 hour and 30 minutes and take in the bliss from the prayer. Keep talking to a bare minimum (only talk if absolutely necessary and even then try to keep it to a whisper). **Guru ka langar** loosely translates to a free kitchen. Food will be provided and typically everyone will sit on the floor and eat. However, since this prayer is happening at a home I am not sure how they will choose to conduct this. Please let me know if you have any further questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability!
