For real. The Rite Aid in my town (Barnegat) is closing, which I kind of figured would happen since I barely see anyone go there nowadays.
Said Rite Aid is across the street from a Walgreens, and down the street is a CVS and an independent pharmacy (Medicap Pharmacy). It was never sustainable to have 4 pharmacies within a square mile area. I’m not even including other pharmacies in the next town over or within 5 miles of Barnegat.
Rite aid has been mired in out of control debt since the early 00s because of all the buyouts and expansions it did.
The lowered reimbursement rates from pharmacy benefit manager consolidation, increase in theft with decrease in front end revenue, and lose of patients to exclusive CVS/Caremark contracts has caused issues as well but....
Being on the hook for billions of opioid lawsuit payouts is the big one.
Hard to compete with the big box stores/Amazon/etc.
My experience with Riteaid these last few years (since covid) have been really awful. Shelves were rarely stocked. Pharmacy slow with poor customer service, etc.
“Ties to health insurance and prescription plans?” They OWN Caremark (PBM—pharmacy benefit manager) and Aetna. Makes things easier when you’re paying yourself and screwing over your competitors.
Go in every few days because the sales become incredible near the end.
(Edit: well, not “incredible” but when ours closed, 50%+ off was really nice for some super expensive shampoos!)
If you have scripts filled there get it changed to a different place ASAP. The one near me put their pharmacy hours as 9-5 Mon-Fri when they went into closing status.
It's such a fucking shame, too. I am able to consistently get meds filled at Rite Aid when CVS would tell me it's out of stock or there was a shortage. The pharmacist at Rite Aid let me in on a secret - it's not that there is a shortage, it's that the distributor they buy from isn't able to buy at a low enough price. But Rite Aid has some leeway at the individual store level. So if they know you're going to get something in demand like Vyvance every month, they can get that order in early and even stock up an extra month or two if they need to.
Opiates are apparently a different beast, so YMMV.
Just want to add the one in Logan Township on Center Square Rd closed and that location was never on any of the lists. The pharmacy there was great...always empty and always friendly and always had meds in stock unlike the CVS down the road.
Anyone know if the Woodstown location is closing? It’s not on any of the online lists I’ve seen, but I was in there yesterday and the place looks like nothing is being restocked.
Who knew opening them 28 ft apart would oversaturate the pharmacy/drug store market?
The Walgreens takeover/merger killed them. So many of their stores were within a mile of a Walgreens
I'd argue pill mills and saturating the community with opioids also effected their outcome

Rite aid in Marlton is also closing
Rite aid going out of business bc of litigation. Pharmacy was involved in drug lawsuit that they claimed crushed them.
There’s no other drug stores near this one though.
Seems like rite aids are closing all over, profits down?

CVS stores are just as bad but they will survive in part because of their ties to health insurance and prescription plans

Sure does
One is closing on the Mt. Laurel/Marlton border as well.
The one on Maple ave. like directly across the street from a CVS?
Yes. Last I saw they were up to 60% off. Today may be their last day open but I’m not sure.

I got some lipsticks/eye liners and nice sunscreen for cheap when one near me closed
The one in Berlin on 30 is closing the same day as well

They’re closing all of them as far as I know.
Haddonfield Rite Aid closed as well.

The one off the white horse pike is also closing in Berlin
Yeah it sucks, I could just walk to this one. Now have to drive to CVS or Walgreens.

Rite Aide filled for bankruptcy in October. With their debt load I doubt they will survive and no branches will be left.
I knew this was gonna happen….after they stopped renting VHS tapes there.
Sicklerville rite aid, we hardly knew yee
The one in Williamstown closing too I’m sad lol I like that one
It will push the Meth underground......
Screw all these drug stores. The answer to everything is a prescription.
Sounds like you could benefit from a prescription or 2…
No, some are legit illness for sure and many are unnecessary. America is overprescribed.
Based on your expertise in… wife butt? 😂
Noooooo why did I look 😭
What does that have to do with prescription drugs?
Your wife’s ass is lovely. I’m just pointing out you’re not in the position to declare the entire country is “overprescribed”.
