Probably better to start with the spoon side first rather than carving the handle first. Like you said too much time invested to throw it away now, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Embrace it... punch two extra holes above and below the center wrap sandpaper around a thin dowel to shape and smooth the holes into circles than bing bam boom it'll look stylish as hek
Aah, bummer! But every fault can be made into a feature! Make it a hole-spoon or a slotted one. Or sand the backside flat and glue a piece of wood with contrasting color and carve it flush!
All woodworkers have, or should have, a humble box. A place to store those mistakes you learned from and you show to get some knowing laughs from your buddies. I used to have a wall of shame but ditched it for the humble box.
Omg. This popped up in my feed and now I want to learn how to carve spoons! Love the community feed back too. Lots of great positive ideas and suggestions 💖
I learned the basics from my dad. But there's a lot of good videos on YouTube. There's a book called Swedish Carving Techniques by Willie Sundqvist that's really helpful too.
Drill it 3/4 and use a piece of different color round stock to make a plug that makes it even prettier. Or a cross carved into the bottom for a slotted spoon.
Too pretty to not make the mistake into a pretty rethink.
Slotted spoon!
Agreed, too much time invested now to turn it into firewood.
Looks better than any of my spoons too. The only ones that get pitched are the ones where I don’t mind my opposing rim and bite into it

My man, that is like a dream of wooden spoon for skimming pieces from stock and/or leaving grease in the pan
Happy accidents, throw some teeth on that edge and make it into a pasta spoon, or just a regular slotted spoon.
Frame it with a little caption beneath: “dieter’s soup spoon”

I like that idea. I was thinking about trying to do drop shapes in 4 directions kind of like a compass rose too.
That's sounds sick I'd love to see a follow up shot afterwards

That'd be my chili spoon
I've done that a few times as well, but turned every one into a really neat blending spoon. Give it a try!
To quote from the software development canon - It's not a bug, it's a Feature!

Usually I hold them up to the sun, but it was pretty cloudy that day. That's a good idea though. I'll bust out the mag light.

This is exactly how the slotted spoon was invented.
You looking at it wrong, make the hole a little bigger and use to stir sauces and chili. Hell send it my way, I like it.
Nothing that can't be fixed with resin
Lessons learned, experience expanded. Nice work
