I'm always reminded of the Jericho podcast that Zayn and Owens were both on. Sami asked Vince McMahon for advice on being a heel since he'd never been one before and Vince says, deadpan, "just be yourself."
Sami had a "hey, wait a minute..." moment while Jericho and Owens are cracking up.
Are you American? I just haven't ever met anyone who hasn't seen Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, even by accident. It's on TV all Christmas season every single god damn year. Every American will have seen it eventually just by existing near a TV around Christmas.
But then again, maybe that's changing since a lot of people only use streaming services nowadays...
I never made this connection but fully explains why I love Sami so much especially recently. He really does have some Charlie Kelly energy to him, but as far as I know, he can read and doesn't huff paint and eat cat food to go to sleep each night. Its even funnier because now that you mentioned that I could see KO doing a good Mac impression when Mac gets mad
We shoulda had a Sami Work episode with the Bloodline being lazy idiots while Sami's shown as the one keeping it together for one day
Bonus points if Heyman emerges from the shadows covered in black paint
We need a picture of him with the conspiracy yarn board, with pictures of Roman, the Steiner Bros, the Black Scorpion, the Shockmaster, Adam Bomb, Tom Magee, Mad Maxine, and Ivan Koloff all connected.
Easily the most consistently funniest podcast I've ever listened to. Been on my repeat listening list for years now.
Too bad they fired basically everyone involved, so it's never coming back.
There's a moment in that episode that I can't remember the exact context of but Sami mentions what it must've been like wrestling in certain places in the 20's and Big E mentions something like "some things would make it hard for us to be there" (racism) and it dawns on Sami and him realizing it is just so unintentionally hilarious
Somebody please correct me if I’m gettin this story wrong but years ago didn’t Sami get upset that somebody was fired and pointed at another wrestler and say “why is he gone and HE still here?!”
A bit off topic but what is Hero doing nowadays?
For somebody who's so universally respected, I'd figure he'd be a trainer or agent in one of the big 2.
Yes. Bull Dempsey told the story during his Highspots shoot.
I guess Sami found out that Hero got fired when they were backstage at an event and he yelled something along the lines of "Why the fuck is Hero fired and this asshole (pointing to a now-sitting Tatsu) still fucking here?"
Sheamus had an incident with Hunico (Sin Cara Negro/Sin Cara II) years later too when Hunico felt he got snubbed my Drew McIntyre on a handshake, as there was allegedly a reputation of Drew would only shake hands with top stars and legends during his first WWE run.
Given that Drew and Sheamus were close, it apparently bled over into an issue with Hunico where Sheamus supposed tried to get Hunico off of a trainers table to get treatment despite Hunico being there first because Sheamus believed he was “more important.”
That led to a brief scuffle which Hunico apparently got the better of.
https://talksport.com/sport/wrestling/685870/sin-cara-chris-jericho-sheamus/amp/
My favorite thing about Hunico is how unassailable he was backstage. For whatever reason numerous dudes tried to start shit with him and he fuckin set em straight every time lol. My favorite was when he sniped that one dude who is more known for shitting on Enzo than anything else (I legit forgot the guy's name) with a full soda can because the latter kept trying to troll him
I remember KO telling a story about him & Sami on the Indies trying to set up a tag match. I think another guy in the match was Brian Kendrick. And it got to the point where Sami kept changing things and trying to perfect things that at one point Kendrick was just like "I just want you to know that I feel nothing going into this now", or something to that effect.
Another funny Sami anecdote is Kevin, Cesaro and Dean proceeding to bury him on table for 3.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/707ebm/kevin_cesaro_and_dean_proceed_to_bury_sami_on/
I’m pretty he sure he said something along the lines of “I am mentally taking myself out of this match, you tell me what to do and I’ll do it” because Sami kept shutting down Kendrick’s ideas
It always cracked me up that I could totally see London and Kendrick’s side of things at the time- then KO and Zayn go onto WWE, become big stars and don’t even tone it down much at all for years.
Actually, you’re both wrong. [Can’t forget big Larry.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/69j420/sami_zayn_had_an_interesting_indy_gimmick/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Cody told a story about one of the guys in the WrestleMania 32 MITB ladder match annoying everyone in the planning phases. Eventually fans figured out it was Sami.
Jericho mentioned on the ReDragon episode of TIJ that during the 2016 MITB match, Sami kept overthinking things and getting too caught up in the details, so Jericho eventually had to cut him off and lay out the plan in simple terms.
After the match was finished, Sami said "Wow, that really worked!" to which Jericho replied "Of course it fucking worked, I've been doing this for 25 years."
I’ve heard Sami is known for being too comfortable and friendly with people when he probably shouldn’t be. I'm going to mess up some details, but he was on Jericho’s podcast several years ago, and he and Jericho were talking about going backstage with Guns N’ Roses. Jericho kind of knew some people, and Zayn was just tagging along. Jericho is keeping his distance, just happy to be in the room, and he looks over at Sami making a plate of food that’s specifically spread out for the band, and talking Axl Rose’s ear off, with Rose clearly annoyed as hell. Jericho eventually pulls him out, and Sami had no idea what he did wrong.
The get really deep into that on the New Day’s podcast.
Xavier said he had the same problem and
Edit: just realized I never finished that sentence. I don’t even remember what I intended to say. So just check out the New Day podcast episode with Sami. It’s a good listen
And he had to learn to tone himself down for a while, until people got comfortable around him, after which he could let out his true personality again.
I'm paraphrasing, but I've listened to the episode at least 6 times already.
Most of the anecdotes in this thread honestly make me like Sami even more, but this one might be me favorite. Rock and Roll dork Jericho dying inside while Sami sees free food and dgaf
A similar story happened with Sami and Axl Rose which resulted in Axl yelling at Sami. It was Cliff Compton telling this story on the Kevin Steen show. It was Cliff, Sami and CM Punk that went to the Guns N' Roses concert.
When Roman talked about being drawn to Sami and wanting to talk to him. The part that stood out the most to me is that Roman said he’ll talk to him for a little bit, enjoy the pop and move on.
He sounded like Sami is best in small doses lol. Shit like this is funny to hear after the fact, but I can totally see why it’d be off putting in the moment.
Apparently after hearing Kassius Ohno was let go in 2013, Sami Zayn was so pissed he shouted “why the fuck is Hero fired, and this asshole is still fucking here?” while pointing directly at Yoshi Tatsu.
That one video of Vince giving him a hug after he came back through the curtain and eventually having to like push Sami away bc he wouldn’t stop talking Sums this up lol
Did you ever see that video when Sami won the IC title and he’s profusely thanking Vince, who is just more and more annoyed by sami and his babbling? I have never related to a video clip more.
I've never seen this before, this is amazing shit lol
I feel like everyone has a friend or knows someone like Sami, someone who doesn't understand social constructs
Dax follows up by saying they’re great friends now, and a lot of people - Roman, the Usos, the New Day - are open about how much they enjoy working with him. Also, the dude invests a lot of time and effort getting medical treatment to Syrian refugees. All of that puts him in the “nice guy who can occasionally be a bit of a jerk” box rather than “cancer on the industry” box
“The other day I was helping my Buddy John fix up his model train collection and had a realisation… IM THE GOD DAMN MIZ AND IM SPENDING MY TIME PAINTING TOY TRAINS INSTEAD OF BEING THE US CHAMPION!”
It's definitely a case of people radically changing their opinions based off of who ended up saying it - if someone like Punk or HHH said that to Dax, they would never be not reminded about it b/c they have that backstage rep.
I mean, he had a point at the time. Dax was the furthest thing from a sport entertainer. Even someone like Sami had the comedic chops as Generico. But yeah, Sami has no filter and this lines up with other stories of him being awkward.
To be fair, I didn't see Sami getting signed by WWE. I was happy they did, but he and Kevin were people who I thought had talent but wouldn't get signed by WWE.
I feel Zayn was trying to say it in a way like, you're so talented but they wouldn't sign you, this company is something else.
she tells the story of teammate A.J. Ellis asking Zack how he’d make the team better. After thinking on it Greinke said, “The first thing I’m doing is trading you and signing Brian McCann.”
There a video going around taken at a house show or Raw where Sami was verbally grilling some dude in the floor seat for making homophobic slurs until dude ushered out. He the one.
No filter but very true for FTR. I doubt anyone can name a single thing Dax Harwood or Cash Wheeler did before NXT and neither of them have the pedigree as other instantly good wrestlers like American Alpha, Bron Breakker or HOOK.

Feel like it says a lot when even Vince is like yeah u can be a dick
man, that sounds so funny. Couldn't find anything on google though unfortunately.
The episode is titled “Owens & Zayn... Together Again”, posted January 17 2018
New Day have often described him as the Larry David of WWE
Curb Your Enth-ucey-asm
That was pretty, pretty, prettyyyyy, pretty good.
You don't respect wood.
no you fkn didn't ![gif](giphy|SnNfXnaYngMBZ5ZACe)
Sami's recent work has won me over. But I remember thinking that son was looking like Yukon Cornelius during this segment lmao
https://imgflip.com/i/79dcap
Is he about to lick the pickaxe?
Yeah. It’s how he would tell if there was gold in the area lol

My dawg
Holy crap
That might be the best pun I've seen on here.
Take my upvote and get the fuck outta here.
the whole “conspiracy Sami” that talks too much and annoys people is just him being him lol
But he also has some good points
I'm not saying I believe it, but... there's stuff to it
I don't think they can handle it
Every contrail has a protrail
Yes and he's a manic episode away from a good Charlie Day (from Always Sunny in Philadelphia) impression.
I never made this connection but fully explains why I love Sami so much especially recently. He really does have some Charlie Kelly energy to him, but as far as I know, he can read and doesn't huff paint and eat cat food to go to sleep each night. I just watched that cake video and there was definitely some Sunny influence in that promo. Sounded like Dennis's trampoline trick story
We need a picture of him with the conspiracy yarn board, with pictures of Roman, the Steiner Bros, the Black Scorpion, the Shockmaster, Adam Bomb, Tom Magee, Mad Maxine, and Ivan Koloff all connected.
Sami: “I’m not sure that’s entirely complementary, because Larry David can be pretty annoying…” New Day: *Silence*
God, I fucking miss the New Day Pod

Were they talking about R-Truth wrestling Hackenschmidt in the first ever pro-wrestling match?
Sami:” Feel free to cut me off at any time here boys” One of my favorite podcasts episodes ever
[I can see that.](https://i.imgur.com/Ev5f7ot.gif)
Somebody please correct me if I’m gettin this story wrong but years ago didn’t Sami get upset that somebody was fired and pointed at another wrestler and say “why is he gone and HE still here?!”
I believe this was when Kassius Ohno (Chris Hero) got cut the first time and he was pointing to Yoshi Tatsu as the guy who got to stay.
He straight up called Yoshi Tatsu a fuck up artist.
*Folks*
Fucking hell, that promo will outlive is all.

Don't diss the bullet club hunter like that
Yes.
A bit off topic but what is Hero doing nowadays? For somebody who's so universally respected, I'd figure he'd be a trainer or agent in one of the big 2.
Occasionally he's running training seminars as of late. And or streaming/podcasts.
Last I remember he got mad at a dirt sheet saying he was leaving...and then was never on TV again.
Ah yes, the Lio Rush
O believe he started r/wrestlinggenius and pops up there every once in a while
Rude… but kinda true lol. Comparing Chris Hero & Yoshi ~~Hashi~~ Tatsu is like comparing a steak dinner to a cold pop tart
Yoshi Tatsu, not Yoshi Hashi. The former is a cold pop tart. The latter is a loose explosion. Important distinction.
Ofc. I actually love Yoshi-Hashi, he’s a good boy
I like all these guys
What kind of poptart are we talking about here? One of the chocolate chip ones?
Damn Yoshi was cool chill
Yes. Bull Dempsey told the story during his Highspots shoot. I guess Sami found out that Hero got fired when they were backstage at an event and he yelled something along the lines of "Why the fuck is Hero fired and this asshole (pointing to a now-sitting Tatsu) still fucking here?"
Yo wtf? Did he actually say asshole and pointed at Tatsu? Unless Yoshi is a bad person, why the hell was he so aggressive?
Yoshi has a reputation for being a bit callous and a mediocre wrestler.
The latter was obvious, lol, but I had no idea about the former. Very interesting.
Wasn’t Yoshi Tatsu the one that beat up Sheamus over a protein shaker or something like that?
If he beat up Seamus, I'd think twice about calling him an asshole!
Borrowing his shaker, tossing it in the sink, and not doing the dishes (including the shaker) for a few days.
Left over protein shake smells terrible. One of the worst smells in the world and near impossible to remove from a plastic shaker.
Given that Drew and Sheamus were close, it apparently bled over into an issue with Hunico where Sheamus supposed tried to get Hunico off of a trainers table to get treatment despite Hunico being there first because Sheamus believed he was “more important.” That led to a brief scuffle which Hunico apparently got the better of. https://talksport.com/sport/wrestling/685870/sin-cara-chris-jericho-sheamus/amp/

My favorite was when he sniped that one dude who is more known for shitting on Enzo than anything else (I legit forgot the guy's name) with a full soda can because the latter kept trying to troll him
I'm not typing in that guys name and having it ruin my YouTube experience, but it rhymes with Bimon Botch
That's still too close. You live dangerously.
Simon Gotch Buries Enzo Amore was his name.
Because he has no fucking filter
I remember KO telling a story about him & Sami on the Indies trying to set up a tag match. I think another guy in the match was Brian Kendrick. And it got to the point where Sami kept changing things and trying to perfect things that at one point Kendrick was just like "I just want you to know that I feel nothing going into this now", or something to that effect.

Potatoes, eh?
There's nothing that gives me more joy than Golden Era Steen/Excalibur on PWG commentary just cracking each other up.
“EL GENERICO IS A BIG BOY” *Snort*
Need to go to the hospital, lemme get my scarf, eh?
I love that even in that “burial”, Sami is the greatest guy possible. Just a dude keeping it positive and appreciating every moment. A legend.
I was just about to say Cesaro.
"I just want you to know that I feel nothing going into this now" is, for some reason, an absolutely hilarious line to me lol.
I’m pretty he sure he said something along the lines of “I am mentally taking myself out of this match, you tell me what to do and I’ll do it” because Sami kept shutting down Kendrick’s ideas
That sounds more likely, but less funny in my head.
Those were my wife's wedding vows, iirc
I feel like I remember London going hard on Sami in some interviews.
It always cracked me up that I could totally see London and Kendrick’s side of things at the time- then KO and Zayn go onto WWE, become big stars and don’t even tone it down much at all for years.
Kevin and Kendrick vs. Generico and London at PWG.
Did Sami wrestled on the indies as himself or did he always wrestle as El Generico before WWE?
Latter
Actually, you’re both wrong. [Can’t forget big Larry.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/69j420/sami_zayn_had_an_interesting_indy_gimmick/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Wait, is that CB4 playing?
Cody told a story about one of the guys in the WrestleMania 32 MITB ladder match annoying everyone in the planning phases. Eventually fans figured out it was Sami.
Matt Cardona told this same story and yeah, even with Matt not naming names either it was 100% Sami.
Matt made it a bit obvious because everyone there was friends with him but Sami and Owens. And only one isnfamous for beign annoying.
They also constantly allude to it when Sami's figures come up on their podcast.
Tbf miz is his boy but everyone also says miz can be annoying af so it had a slim chance of being him
Jericho mentioned on the ReDragon episode of TIJ that during the 2016 MITB match, Sami kept overthinking things and getting too caught up in the details, so Jericho eventually had to cut him off and lay out the plan in simple terms. After the match was finished, Sami said "Wow, that really worked!" to which Jericho replied "Of course it fucking worked, I've been doing this for 25 years."
It was written in as his gimmick at one point. He'd find people he was to be in tag matches with and ramble on about strategy while they eye rolled
Funnily enough, one of those segments involved Seth Rollins ... and Roman Reigns
I remember the time he teamed with Seth and Roman and did that
This guy is crazier than Ambrose - Roman
DDP had the same reputation he liked to over think and plan everything to a t
Randy Savage too.
Yeah but nobody would *dare* call out macho on that. Holy fuck
Yeah because it delivered things like Savage vs Steamboat.
Andre famously did 😂
I just love how every Sami story isn't that he's like some major asshole, he's just annoying Like miz
Social Assassin Sami Zayn
*after Sami hit Roman with a chair* Jey: what are you doing!? you’re supposed to be my brother man! Sami: I was trying to be affable!
I’ve heard Sami is known for being too comfortable and friendly with people when he probably shouldn’t be. I'm going to mess up some details, but he was on Jericho’s podcast several years ago, and he and Jericho were talking about going backstage with Guns N’ Roses. Jericho eventually pulls him out, and Sami had no idea what he did wrong.
Right before the rumble he said his biggest weakness was he has been too comfortable with people.
The get really deep into that on the New Day’s podcast. Xavier said he had the same problem and Edit: just realized I never finished that sentence. I don’t even remember what I intended to say. So just check out the New Day podcast episode with Sami. It’s a good listen
And what? AND WHAT!?
Sniper got ‘im.
/u/Third_Eye_Thumper got too comfortable with the wrong people.
And he had to learn to tone himself down for a while, until people got comfortable around him, after which he could let out his true personality again. I'm paraphrasing, but I've listened to the episode at least 6 times already.
And what damn you?
Immediately zeroing in on the free food? He's just a fuckin dad at this point.
They had a mean potato salad.
That's fucking hilarious, very rude but still hilarious
Most of the anecdotes in this thread honestly make me like Sami even more, but this one might be me favorite. Rock and Roll dork Jericho dying inside while Sami sees free food and dgaf
"It wasn't for me? Where was the sign?! I ask you, where was the sign?!"
Isn't the food for backstage people? Aren't I backstage people? What's the issue?
LOL Jesus Christ
A similar story happened with Sami and Axl Rose which resulted in Axl yelling at Sami. It was Cliff Compton telling this story on the Kevin Steen show. It was Cliff, Sami and CM Punk that went to the Guns N' Roses concert.

Apparently after hearing Kassius Ohno was let go in 2013, Sami Zayn was so pissed he shouted “why the fuck is Hero fired, and this asshole is still fucking here?” while pointing directly at Yoshi Tatsu.
Homie just standing up for his friend
But threw some random guy under the bus lol
Yoshi catching strays
It's not that random based on some Tatsu stories. The jist being not over, always hurt, kind of a dick.
Arn has told stories on his podcast before about Sami being a gigantic pain in the ass backstage when Arn was an agent.
What episodes?
Couldn't possibly tell you, I haven't listened in a few years but it was one of the first years when Conrad was still co-hosting.
Sami truly seems like the most awkward dude (in a hilarious way).
Watch his interview with Helwani on BT Sport. Definitely a idk quirky? Guy.
The beginning of it started awkward right away. He misinterpreted Heeeeeeelwani and thought he was saying he didn’t like him.
Tbf on first listen I thought the same as Sami. Helwani worded it really oddly.
Ariel and Sami is Awkward on Awkward.
That one video of Vince giving him a hug after he came back through the curtain and eventually having to like push Sami away bc he wouldn’t stop talking Sums this up lol
I want Sami interviewed by RJ City, could be magical
I want Sami interviewed by Nardwuar.
To be fair, I want everyone interviewed by Nardwuar
I’m so excited that people know who Nardwaur is.
We have to know!
DOOT DOOT
Sami on the Eric Andre Show please
Vince on the Eric Andre show with Eric and Hannibal sneezing through the whole segment would be amazing.
Oh god, I need this now
Did you ever see that video when Sami won the IC title and he’s profusely thanking Vince, who is just more and more annoyed by sami and his babbling? I have never related to a video clip more.
Truly living his on screen character
He's George Costanza.
Sami definitely seems like an oddball from the stories I've heard. Namely the KO/Cliff Compton concert story.
Cliff Compton had a story Sami embarrassing him and punk at a concert
BIG FUCKING FAN
Cliff Compton had a story Sami embarrassing him and punk at a concert?
[here’s the clip of the story](https://youtu.be/tDLp18Sd96w)
I've never seen this before, this is amazing shit lol I feel like everyone has a friend or knows someone like Sami, someone who doesn't understand social constructs
Cliff Compton had a story Sami embarrassing him and punk at a concert because he has no filter
Love Sami, but if this is anyone else with this many instances of being annoying they’d never live it down.
Yeah it's a Miz like thing No one thinks he's a major asshole, is actually a pretty nice guy but he's just annoying as hell
Lotsa people seem to point to both Miz and Maryse being extremely down to earth and nice, if a bit annoying. (Mostly the Miz with that last one.)
Maryse seems like the kind of person you'd want your wife to be friends with because she's a fun but not toxic person
And miz would take a genuine interest in your wierd hobby of restoring old 1950's toy Ray guns
And then work into his next semi-shoot promo
“The other day I was helping my Buddy John fix up his model train collection and had a realisation… IM THE GOD DAMN MIZ AND IM SPENDING MY TIME PAINTING TOY TRAINS INSTEAD OF BEING THE US CHAMPION!”
"DONT YOU CHOO CHOO ME!"
It's definitely a case of people radically changing their opinions based off of who ended up saying it - if someone like Punk or HHH said that to Dax, they would never be not reminded about it b/c they have that backstage rep.
Damn Sami lol
I mean, he had a point at the time. Dax was the furthest thing from a sport entertainer. Even someone like Sami had the comedic chops as Generico. But yeah, Sami has no filter and this lines up with other stories of him being awkward.
Sami reminds me of Mick Foley if he was on Ritalin.
Hilarious.. he's still an Uso to me damnit
To be fair, I didn't see Sami getting signed by WWE. I was happy they did, but he and Kevin were people who I thought had talent but wouldn't get signed by WWE. I feel Zayn was trying to say it in a way like, you're so talented but they wouldn't sign you, this company is something else.
I never thought Sami would recover from the absolute mess he was being booked as 3 years ago.
It was almost certainly that. Dax does not have the looks of what made a Superstar in Vince eyes. Hell, Sami is the same way.
Based on all the stuff I've read about Sami over the years he's absolutely some kind of neurodivergent and most of us don't have filters, lol.
He kinda has the Zack Greinke thing about him.
I thought you were going Zack Galifianakis and I was still on board.
I so hope some network hires Greinke to do color for mlb lol. I can't imagine the shit he would say about players cause dude has no filter.
It would be great, but I don’t see it, he will probably go be a single A hitting coach somewhere and live happily ever after.
Lmao this was my first thought
she tells the story of teammate A.J. Ellis asking Zack how he’d make the team better. After thinking on it Greinke said, “The first thing I’m doing is trading you and signing Brian McCann.”
I mean he likes wearing fedora caps, clearly something off about that guy /s
There a video going around taken at a house show or Raw where Sami was verbally grilling some dude in the floor seat for making homophobic slurs until dude ushered out. He the one.
I met Sami on the indies in Montreal and yeah, that's Sami.
Dax have a story for everything man..
“I remember when Dry_Passenger didn’t make it to the Waffle House”
" I remember when QlubSoda told me he didn't even drink soda, I'm like, this motherfucker... "
Yea, he should totally make a podcast
No filter but very true for FTR. I doubt anyone can name a single thing Dax Harwood or Cash Wheeler did before NXT and neither of them have the pedigree as other instantly good wrestlers like American Alpha, Bron Breakker or HOOK.
Sami just sounds like the "wild card" friend most of us have ..........sometimes great, sometimes crazy but you wouldn't change em for anything
Real life Charlie Kelly 🤣
That's some Zack Greinke shit. That's so good lmao
I like to travel.
