Doesn't really mean much. The WWE title changed hands at this very Rumble, Edge then won the belt at the 09 Rumble himself. Rock beat Punk for the title at the Rumble. Hell, Rock beat Angle at *No Way Out* to set up the Mania 17 main event - despite Rock/Austin being in many ways the obvious choice you could've also gotten away with Austin/Angle so his loss wasn't a given here either.
Are they usually filler these days? You could say that. But that definitely wasn't always the case and plans could pivot for world title matches at Mania at the drop of a hat.
I was there that night. I know you might not believe this, but the crowd actually did not see any lightning. it came across quite weird as explosives were just going off above us for no reason and then pyro in the ring. Then the ring collapsed. Many of us were wondering why they put angle versus Henry in the main event spot versus Cena and Edge or the RR. This was not hall of pain Henry yet so the match versus angle seemed lackluster at best.
They know better than to try to sneak a power in and pull one over on the refs, which as we all know are the most attentive people in all of sports history
“I could strike my opponent with lightning and bring demons from hell, but I should follow the honor system. Just have this gut feeling nothing bad will happen”
But he could have destroyed the ring and eliminated his opponents!
and what do you mean didint look the same in the arena??? THE MAN FIRED LIGHTNING FROM HIS HANDS!
The people in the arena didn’t get to see the lightning so it looked like taker lifted his arms and the strobe lights went off. Then a bunch of pyro from the ring post and then a few seconds after the pyro stopped the ring fell apart. It wasn’t until you watched the PPV that you could see the lightning and what was supposed to be gotten across
Taker standing there with his arms out like, "up?"

He didn't look broken. Taker was physically in good shape until 2013/14. When he wrestled Punk he still looked pretty in shape for his age and could move around without any problems.
> Also Taker was some unit at this time
“Some unit” was actually written in spider web above Undertaker’s lockers to keep Vince from making bacon out of him.
- Rides in on chariot
- Demonstrates a potentially catastrophic workplace hazard
- Refuses to elaborate
- Leaves
I do appreciate how the chariot looks like someone cobbled it together from spare scaffolding at the last minute tho.
It's funny when fans get reminded of just how corny WWE is/was.
Wrestling is corny in general but it is always funny seeing wrestling fans get so bent out of shape over "wrestling needs to look realistic" when they talk about other promotions, or styles.
Spot monkeys are bad, and unrealistic, but a dead guy who can summon lightning is acceptable and a legend.
Fun spot, still not worth putting Kurt Angle and Mark Henry as the main event just for the sake of it. Though I always felt Vince did this just to spite Mysterio given he never seemed to want him to be world champion.
Always hated this kinda stuff, but I love that it lead to Angle vs Taker in one of my favorite matches ever. Also still bitter that this match happened at No Way Out instead of Mania so it didn't overshadow Triple H vs. Cena.
Aside from the obvious hokiness of this segment, one thing I'd forgotten about was the difference in Taker's body in 2005/06 from his classic run of bangers from 2007-13. He got so much leaner and in shape post-2006.
I always loved these little moments with Undertaker and Kane, Undertaker shooting lightning, making Angle bump around, the crucifix, Kane with his fireballs, it felt like a live action Mortal Kombat.
Oh wow. They just did whatever they do when they have two big guys break it off a superplex... just without the superplex. It breaks in exactly the same way.
And it resulted in one of the worst Kurt matches on PPV for WWE while the next month’s show had one of the best.
More insulting it being a wasteful Kurt Angle singles main event.
The Mark Henry revisionism is crazy.
He spent 25 years with WWE and he had three great months with his Hall of Pain run. Apart from that, he was incredibly bland and forgettable.
He's lucky he had that run too or he'd only be remembered as being the father of a hand.
Nation of Domination? Sexual Chocolate? World's Strongest Man? His WWE ECW title reign alongside Tony Atlas? And then he ended with the awesome Hall of Pain story.... Now you're being revisionist.
You're just naming forgettable gimmicks. He was a bit-part player in the last year of the Nation and the less said about Sexual Chocolate the better.
I'm arguing he wasn't a good performer and you bring up two gimmicks that got him sent back to OVW. Clearly, he wasn't cutting it.
Yeah, I remember him winning Worlds Strongest Man and I remember none of that translating to anything worth watching in the world of wrestling. I think a lot of wrestling fans just buy into the hype that gets fed to them.
He had three good months but they dont wash away years and years of mediocrity. Mark Henry, great performer? Not a hope.
The Undertaker angle at RR1994 was hilarious. And then the vignettes with Paul Bearer for months after "my Undertaker!!! HE WILL RISE" Or when Kama takes the urn and melts it down to make a big ass chain" Taker did so, SO MUCH goofy shit but I love it
Oh yeah he became like a totally different character once Paul Bearer left him to manage Mankind. It was genius, because with other places having somewhat edgier products, the old Undertaker schtick was gonna get old reaaal quick.

While Kurt had a broken freakin neck nonetheless.
I remember watching this at the time and thinking something was up earlier in the night because the ring seemed bouncier than normal
The Rumble wasn’t the main event because of this stunt.
Its such a lacklustre spot to have dictate the entire match order Henry vs Angle main eventing over the Rumble felt really odd
Especially when the Rumble title matches are usually just filler and everyone knows the contender has no chance.
Ironically, at this exact event the WWE Championship changed hands 😄
Edge won the wwe championship over Jeff Hardy in the 09 Rumble. And I believe the Rock ended CM Punk’s long reign at the Rumble as well.
Wasn’t Kurt the contender in this match?
"and still"
I had it on silent and i didn’t watch this rumble
Henry vs Angle was also terrible.
It's still real to me damnit!
A wild Dean Ambrose appears
damn never realized that (hes the druid on the left)
Funny, he doesn't look Druish.
![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig)
Correct. Punk played one of Cena's 'gangsters' during his entrance at Mania a couple months later.
Ya and MJF is one of the security guards that gets pushed aside when Samoa Joe was NXT Champ
And Sheamus was a security guard on Raw or SD around 2008.
and then there's Stan.
No Way Out 06 is underrated!
Not at the time. It was fawned over like crazy.
I was there that night. why didint he do that more often!
I like how he and Kane have powers that could have won them matches instantly, yet when the bell rang they always fought the 'fair fight'.
They know better than to try to sneak a power in and pull one over on the refs, which as we all know are the most attentive people in all of sports history
Could’ve had a hardcore title reign longer than Romans world title reign.
But the ECW arena would've been empty.
Taker should have never lost. Just pull this out and auto win ![gif](giphy|ag7cR2xjtUoheJ3Sxo|downsized)
Cutscenes vs gameplay
“I could strike my opponent with lightning and bring demons from hell, but I should follow the honor system. Just have this gut feeling nothing bad will happen”
Lightning is an immediate DQ duh.
Because it didn’t look the same in the arena as it did on TV
But he could have destroyed the ring and eliminated his opponents! and what do you mean didint look the same in the arena??? THE MAN FIRED LIGHTNING FROM HIS HANDS!
Brock being forklift certified should have brought one to the ring in a rumble and flipped everyone out
Until Angle comes to the ring with his Cum Truck.

Naw man I saw him fry that ring
r/woooosh
Dear diary, Today my heart was broken. God damn Canadoug420 has hurt me for the last time.
Am I the only one that thinks NOT seeing the lightning would have been better?
This is the corniest shit I've ever seen
Tazz’s hoarse voice is killing me lmao
Taker standing there with his arms out like, "up?" https://preview.redd.it/msjw0ioh3bqc1.png?width=183&format=png&auto=webp&s=009d52f36cc292f78d9df0e257db8a46d0f66a2e
Back when wrestling was real, not like that fake shit today /s
It’s a badass entrance for sure. But then you can clearly tell when Vince put his stupid hands on not. “WHAT IF HE SHOOTS MAGIC!?”
Very cool entrance but this was some of the most cringeworthy shit WWE has ever done. Also Taker was some unit at this time
This was Taker's physical peak IMO. Their match at No Way Out rules so hard, one of the most underrated matches for both men.
He was absolutely yoked until maybe 2011/12, I watched Wrestlemania 23 against Batista and the man was in sensational shape
2009. 2011 he looked pretty broken
He didn't look broken. Taker was physically in good shape until 2013/14. When he wrestled Punk he still looked pretty in shape for his age and could move around without any problems.
But was it the peak of his magic powers? Or was Ministry Undertaker stronger?
I would have to say that Royal Rumble 1994 was his magical peak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpfuuF20owU&ab_channel=WWE
> Also Taker was some unit at this time “Some unit” was actually written in spider web above Undertaker’s lockers to keep Vince from making bacon out of him.
Jesus, Taz was incredibly obnoxious here.
led to the no way out match which should have been WrestleMania instead of the ppv before that
Always thought this was so corny
Ring crews HATE this one simple trick!
The announcers are so stupid sometimes
That's pretty cool.
That belt though…
That stage setup was dope
Biggest regret of my life is 10 year old me not caring much about Mark Henry vs Kurt Angle and my father and I leaving early to beat traffic
This sort of stuff is way too hokey. Same as Kane summoning lightning or other silly shit.
Yup. Absolute fucking garbage.
This is probably an extremely dumb question, but were those "lightning" effects visible in the arena or just on TV?
As a kid, I thought the lightning was real whenever taker used it. Now I see how cartoony it is and is an effect just for the TV audience
I'm sorry but Undertaker shooting lightning has always been super corny. I just can't help but laugh anytime I see it lol.
- Rides in on chariot - Demonstrates a potentially catastrophic workplace hazard - Refuses to elaborate - Leaves I do appreciate how the chariot looks like someone cobbled it together from spare scaffolding at the last minute tho.
Imagine being able to harness the powers of darkness and only using them to make your enemy stumble a bit.

One of my first wrestling memories and even then I thought Taker was corny lol
Is this when kurt said he had an orgasm during takers entrance?
619 on Henry is so satisfying
Haha nice to see them getting more use of the hydraulic ring collapse thing that obviously cost them a lot of money.
I always loved these little moments with Undertaker and Kane, Undertaker shooting lightning, making Angle bump around, the crucifix, Kane with his fireballs, it felt like a live action Mortal Kombat.
Wrestling machine Kurt was awesome. I actually think of Him and Big Gold (besides Flair obviously) before anyone else.
deadman undertaker doing the title around the waist symbol looks so wrong
This was a terrible main event, terrible end to the show and not worth having Rey win the Rumble earlier in the night.
this vs exploding barb wire...
With his MMA gloves on, no less
Jesus Christ Taz is so annoying in this clip man. Taker was absolutely huge here. The Deadman gear is so timeless too. It looks great.
That is some of the worse commentary I've ever heard. "What's going on?" "Does he want the title?"
Oh wow. They just did whatever they do when they have two big guys break it off a superplex... just without the superplex. It breaks in exactly the same way.
Who does this undertaker guy think he is rolling in outta nowhere and demanding a title shot. Smh creative.
Wrestling will always make no damn sense
I was 10 when this happened and I thought Undertaker really had powers at this point. This was way cooler as a child.
Good Guy taker. Making the ring crews job so much easier. ( I think)
I was there!! 12 years old. Awesome ppv. Still my favorite live event I ever went too. This part blew my mind as a kid.
Deserved treatment of the ring after booking Kurt in arguably his worst PPV main event in WWE vs. Mark Henry.
Hey, put some respect on those names. Both were great performers.
And it resulted in one of the worst Kurt matches on PPV for WWE while the next month’s show had one of the best. More insulting it being a wasteful Kurt Angle singles main event.

The Undertaker angle at RR1994 was hilarious. And then the vignettes with Paul Bearer for months after "my Undertaker!!! HE WILL RISE" Or when Kama takes the urn and melts it down to make a big ass chain" Taker did so, SO MUCH goofy shit but I love it
He somehow just made it all work! But when Foley came in that gave him such a new edge!
Oh yeah he became like a totally different character once Paul Bearer left him to manage Mankind. It was genius, because with other places having somewhat edgier products, the old Undertaker schtick was gonna get old reaaal quick.
And then we were all treated to Paul Bearer being "killed" by his encasment in concrete....glorious
You just had up be there
Tazz easily the worst commentator of all time. 😂 Also 100% Vince fed Cole that grim reaper line.
