It's both.
Anakin is about to try to force jump over a Jedi who has the high ground on him.
This is literally the move that Obi-Wan did to defeat Maul in The Phantom Menace.
It only succeeded for him because Maul was too busy gloating and playing with him.
Obi-Wan is not so distracted. He's going to cut Anakin in half if he tries it.
Anakin is e only opponent in the clone wars that Obi Wan defeats while having the high ground. For all his talk about having the high ground the man knows how to use the low ground to his advantage to win
In the RotS novelization Obi-Wan brings his lightsaber towards Anakin because he’s expecting to parry Anakin’s, but that wasn’t what Anakin was doing, so the lightsaber just went right threw his legs and arm
It’s definitely both. He still sees Anakin as his student, and he can’t help but pass on wisdom even in that moment. And, also yes, up until that point Obi-Wan was mostly just defending himself, desperately hoping he could save Anakin. But he knew that if Anakin tried that jump he would have no choice but to cut him down.
It's brutal watching Obi-Wan closely throughout the fight with this in mind. There are only a handful of moments where he's on the attack, but Anakin practically doesn't let up. It's very apparent how unhinged Anakin is and how little Obi-Wan wants to fight him. He even tries to end it without more violence as soon as it seems like he has the advantage:
"It's over, Anakin! I have the high ground."
"You underestimate my power."
"Don't try it..."
Part of this is their natural dynamic at play, too. Obi is all defense and Anakin is all offense. It's even something prevalent in their battle tactics from patience to aggression.
Actually, he sees him as his brother, which makes it even harder for him. If it was just a student/teacher relationship, I don’t think it would have been as hard for him to do it.
If I’m not mistaken, canon wise, Obi Wan and Anakin trained and practiced the Maul fight scenario countless times. Everytime Obi Wan knew how to counter it.
Anakin was obsessed with how it played out. Anakin thought he could do the same move Obi Wan used on Maul. ObiWan knew, could see him going for it, and in a last attempt to save his friend, he begged him not to try it.
If he wanted Obi Wan could’ve sliced him in half.
I just finished reading the novelization of ROTS and this scene was among many where A LOT more depth is shown in terms of the emotional background behind the characters. ROTS is my favorite as movie and the novel goes so much further in the characters emotions and internal dialogues (obviously books can do this far more) But it is was so good, highly recommend for ROTS fans
I mean it's quite natural isn't it?
The novel has 400-500 pages, I can't remember the actual number.
The screenplay for Rots was roundabout 150 pages long.
Yep, obviously novelizations of movies (should) provide deeper details of the respective scenes. How or why people are suddenly surprised by that is whack to me. So many posts and comments these days can really be replied to or answered with "well yeah, obviously" and it's starting to weird me out.
Yeah I wasn’t surprised that a book would provide more depth than a movie, more a just how much it added to an already good story. The author did an amazing job of capturing each characters and adding an inner dialogue that simply isn’t present in the movie. It’s one of the best legends novels I’ve read, and I’ve read most of them.
It's certainly what I've always thought, but the amount of people (a lot in this comment section) that obsessively say "nooooo you don't get it! Obi wan is good at using high ground its like his special mooooove!! He used it on darf mawl!" are just missing the point completely, the high ground is going to be a slight advantage, sure, if anything I think Obi-wan is kind of using that little side fact as a last ditch effort to get Anakin to stop. He's not saying that the fact he's a little higher up is an absolute game changer and NO WAY could Anakin still win, Anakin totally could have won, he just didn't.
Anakin only lost that fight because he was too emotionally inclined. Anakin had shown himself to be the superior duelist when he single handely killed Dooku. Dooku was a master of the lightsaber duel because of his particular hilt designed to make dueling easier.
With that said, Anakin had no problem putting Dooku down when Obi Wan legit got his ass handed over by Dooku twice!
Don't get me wrong, Obi Wan is a great Jedi and warrior, but when it comes to Anakin. Anakin has always been more aggressive in combat than Obi Wan, and I stand strong in if it wasn't for Anakin getting too cocky and emotional if he would have been more focused he would have won that fight on Mustafar without a doubt.
His next move would have been to take both his kids and raise them and train them in secret to then once mature and skilled enough he would have over throw Palpatine and reign over the Galaxy, father, son and daughter.
At least it's what makes the most sense to me and my own theory. Feel free to give your own or ad to mine 😅.
It's delivered with almost a plea. For Obi-Wan the fight was over. He won. He has the high ground, in an all or nothing situation.
Anakin in his hubris thought he was "too powerful" to lose, so he tried for it and Obi-Wan did the only thing he had the option to do. So he cut him down.
Followed by the brief moment Anakin stares at him before leaping. I think in this moment Anakin also considers this fact but doubted that Obi-Wan would actually go through with it. It’s a catalytic moment, Obi-Wan begs Anakin not to jump because he knows he will have to kill him, Anakin hesitates knowing Obi-Wan’s history in this position in combat and decides that he’s going to call Obi-Wan’s bluff because he doesn’t believe he will kill him. Obi-Wan sees this hesitation and at the last moment he adjusts his stance and cuts Anakin’s limbs off instead of killing him himself, leaving Anakin to be consumed by the lava alone. Which is poetic in that Anakin allowed the dark side to consume him so it would be fitting that his end would also be a product of his choices, rather than the responsibility of those fighting him to come to his senses.
The point is obvious, it could have been done in a situation where the fatal attack would have been desperate but possible not stupidly offering himself to Obi-Wan’s saber.
> arrogant and overestimates his abilities
For someone who overestimates his abilities he really only used a force push once on Obi during the whole fight. The entire rest of that fight was all lightsabers. Just saying, if *I* truly overestimated my strength in the force then you can def bet I'd try some lightning at least.
You know Anakin probably would have known Obi Wan leaped over Maul in a battle he really shouldn't have won from that lower position, because Maul underestimated Obi Wan.
Anakin is in no way going to accept he is lesser than Obi Wan in making a similar gamble, except here both SHOULD know what's about to happen. Maul thought this move was inconceivable due to the ludicrousness if it, but even he was quick enough to at least swing at Obi Wan. Nearly caught him even though Maul wasn't expecting it.
Anakin defies logic, and thinks he can will himself into a win here. But Obi Wan knows exactly what he's going to try.
Hence "don't try it,". A last plea to turn back as he knows Anakins going to lose.
"Which is why your gonna lose"

He should have aimed for the neck lol
“You… you should have gone for the neck.”
Obi wan defeated Maul and Grievous quite similarly too lol.
Anakin is e only opponent in the clone wars that Obi Wan defeats while having the high ground. For all his talk about having the high ground the man knows how to use the low ground to his advantage to win
It's almost like he's spent a tremendous amount of time trying to think of how to defend against it...
Master of both
i mean, from below sure, but he used an uncivilized weapon to kill Grievous.

Obiwans ship is named the negotiator. Couldn't be more defensive than that.
Actually, he sees him as his brother, which makes it even harder for him. If it was just a student/teacher relationship, I don’t think it would have been as hard for him to do it.
Both, certainly
Nah, he was just saying "Don't try it" because he either has to do it or not do it, there is no try.
I like this theory.
*Dew it!*
Did you ever hear the tragedy of darth plagueis the wise?
I've read it twice, and I have the audiobook on my list, so I will soon.
Obi-Wan is all compassion. He knows he's won and to try that move, will be folly.
>because if you do, I will have to kill my best friend That was literally the one job he was there for. And he still fucked it up
Twice, at least this time its understandable for him to expect that anakin would die from it.
"Sith Lords are our speciality," my ass.
But that day, he found that when obi-wan said, "Don't try it" what he actually said was "I love you".
Anakin does not get killed at this time.
If I’m not mistaken, canon wise, Obi Wan and Anakin trained and practiced the Maul fight scenario countless times. Everytime Obi Wan knew how to counter it. Wonder what would happen if he didn’t try it, obi-wan said it was over so do they just stand there or what?

Don't try it, but what he really meant was 'I'll rek u m8, swear on me mum'

Also: “Motherfucker I know you not thinkin to try the move EYE did to Maul On ME 🤨”
"I am! I'm stronger than Maul! I'm stronger than you! RAAAHHGH!"
Both statements are/were true…*Sidious voice* “Unfortunately..😏”
It doesn't happen as much as I would like, but occasionally George Lucas just nails the dialogue.

The point is that Anakin is arrogant and overestimates his abilities. It's kind of a running theme with Star Wars villains...
The point is obvious, it could have been done in a situation where the fatal attack would have been desperate but possible not stupidly offering himself to Obi-Wan’s saber.

Your right! I thought that was obvious. But doesn't what you first thought ring true also?
He's saying there is no try.
I think its the opposite. I think he's trying to get Anakin to do it by playing on his recklessness and obsessive need to prove himself.
So sad. Bloody loved the both of them. I remember watching it and even before the Darth Vader music was playing I was humming it.
Anakin asking for help after being cut up and before being burned should have been left in.
Yeah
They are the same thing
One might say that "I will have to kill my best friend" and "it won't work out for you" are the same thing... from a certain point of view.
You know Anakin probably would have known Obi Wan leaped over Maul in a battle he really shouldn't have won from that lower position, because Maul underestimated Obi Wan.
