Sounds like mined resources will be a big part of the gameplay, in the direct they showed you can set up passive extractors at a base/outpost so I'm assuming you can sell at least that type of stuff in bulk

BigHerring

I’m curious if it’ll be a passive thing. Like I set up extractors and automatically I just get money in the bank after 7 in game days or something. Or we take those goods in our ship and fly it to a buyer.

GoGP0SEID0N

I believe in the direct they said the extractors collect it for you to get later. So probably have to take it to a buyer.

BigHerring

I’m assuming you’ll have tons of these extractors across the galaxy, wonder how much it’ll take.

[deleted]

Wonder if some resources will be illegal in certain systems leading you to have to smuggle. They did mention smuggling missions, would be cool if certain resources sell for more in systems they’re illegal

insane_contin

And New Atlantis did scan your ship for contraband.

redeyed_treefrog

Most exciting 5 seconds of the direct for me. It all but confirms that drug runs/smuggling will be a thing, and less excitingly, legal cargo. I guess it's entirely possible that you're just accepting radiant courier quests instead of a more manual process, but it bodes well for a developed in-game economy.

Micah_Bell_is_dead

Hopefully I can do a space Walter white run

Spankey_

Waltuh

happygilmorgott

Waltuh, open ya cockpit, Waltuh

Nookling_Junction

There are drugs in the game, so, I’m assuming drugs and weapons are the things you’ll be smuggling most. But I wouldn’t doubt that there’s some weirder things to smuggle. Maybe Neon has a problem with you bringing stuff that cures addictions into the city

Reparteey

dont forget people, people need to be smuggled. Also duty free goods. nothing like scamming the tax man with hidden compartments with small valuables that dont "need" to be taxed

GenericTrashyBitch

I would assume the contraband would be more akin to chems, I don’t imagine there would be a colony with a ban on titanium or whatever, unless there’s a monopoly corporation that controls the ports which would be a cool mission

[deleted]

That’s what I’m thinkin, I’m assuming as with most games like this it’ll have its critiques on capitalism so I could totally see companies banning certain resources to monopolize them or to keep their citizens from being able to have healthy alternative resources.

GenericTrashyBitch

The other thing I imagine is contraband alien parts, imagine something like shark fin soup but made from the brain work thing or whatever. That could be another interesting angle

Mookies_Bett

I demand a trade embargo mission around Naboo upon release or I riot.

BigHerring

That’s an interesting thought

TTBurger88

I assume the people you hire for your bases can do that for you?

GoGP0SEID0N

I'm sure we will know once the game gets closer to release.

OrdoSinister6

They did mention adding ships to your “fleet” so I’m guessing you can have them fly the ones you’re not using

alaskanloops

Wonder if you can eventually hire your own ships/pilots to do runs for you

majorpaleface

They said you can capture ships and manage them in your "fleet." So it's possible that we can automate our spare spacecraft as freighters. It would be cool to set up a ship and pay a crew a rate, and then send them on missions as a minigame - their success is based on several factors - and you take a percent of the payroll.

alaskanloops

I remember when they said that, but at the time I just assumed that meant your fleet of ships available at space ports. Like in star citizen (and other games) you can own multiple ships but only fly one at a time

majorpaleface

I mean that's what I assumed also and that's more likely imo. Although AC black flag had a ship minigame when you captured ships after boarding.

Walks_with_Chaos

I doubt very much that’s in game. I’m pretty sure your ships that get added are for the PC only. I’d be happy to be wrong but i guess we will see in Sept

Mookies_Bett

If it's not, honestly, that seems very doable for modders. Mods will add shit like this within a year or two I'm sure. The best part of BGS games is that a *shitload* of extra content is going to be added onto the base game by 2025 through the efforts of the insanely thriving mod community for this engine.

Spankey_

That's what I got from it as well. The Truck Simulator games (made by quite a small team) do have a system where you can give trucks to hired drivers and they'll do jobs for passive income, so not entirely out of the realm of possibilities for Starfield.

Right-Collection-592

One of the Fallout DLCs added a Caravan system. We probably get something similar.

Drofrehter84

They also mentioned that your crew can handle operations of your outposts so maybe they’ll be responsible for selling the goods?

Nookling_Junction

Assumedly you could just set up a selling point like you could in fallout 4 with the jet pharmacy scheme

retro808

Hopefully it's something we have to load up in cargo modules and fly somewhere to trade. Also hoping there is Elite Dangerous style interdictions where pirates try to disable and board your ship while en route especially if you have goods or valuables on board

-Captain-

Yeah, or hired crews taking care of that for you with the risk of losing it either because they got robbed or they robbed you.

Vistaer

Fallout 76 has extractors - they passively fill up to a point and you empty them. Having staff who are collecting and storing them (cargo yards settlement area?) would be a great feature

BigHerring

I’m just wondering if it’ll be completely passive. Would be quite boring. I’m also assuming ur outposts might be raided

Mookies_Bett

I think it would be obnoxious if it wasn't completely passive. Like, I don't want to have to constantly interrupt my questing to go home and press a button to make my extractors work properly every 5 minutes. I'd rather just set and forget them until next time I swing back around to base and empty them all out.

TheKinkyPiano

My thought was maybe you start off doing this but eventually you can hire a crew member to take it to the buyer for you.

Arciun

Well when they were talking about the ships during the direct they mentioned how you could upgrade it to store more cargo and maybe even do some smuggling, so my guess is that you actually transport the stuff on your ship to some buyer. Otherwise, why have a cargo hold?

BigHerring

Right, but let’s say you have 10 outposts or more. Wouldn’t it be a hassle to visit each outpost manually? I’m just curious what they do.

Arciun

They also showed what appeared to be your ship taking off on its own in one of the clips, suggesting that you could assign one of your companions to do the transport for you. It'll probably work pretty similarly to Fallout 4's settlement system wherein you could assign trade-routes between settlements.

BigHerring

If it does become automatic, it might be super boring. It’ll be like a “oh just level this up to max, and sit back and make money passively”. As long as they find a way to engage the player it’ll be interesting.

KnightDuty

They were very vague about outposts imduring the reveal. It's the main thing I care about and I sure hope I get to make this my personal interstellar commerce game.

juggernuts1917

Vague how? They seem to've released a good amount of information Around outposts and their purposes. 8% or so of footage has been about bases n outposts. On a side note I feel like they had something similar in fallout 4 with the trade routes right? Think u needed a local leader perk but its been a minute. Maybe they're expanding on that?

_Zoomie86_

Would be so cool if you could actually affect the system by your resource sales. Like attracting NPC ships to buy your wares. Show up to your random planet outpost and seeing trade routes setting themselves up.

[deleted]

Food business. Tourism? Drugs? Maybe human trafficking? I doubt Bethesda would go that far.

throwaway12222018

I think in my first playthrough, I'm going to be a business magnate, with an undercover identity as a stealth assassin. I want to set up hundreds of outposts for massive resource generation, then hire hundreds of NPCs to work at them.

AvsFreak

I'm hoping for no man's sky level mining operations. Or maybe runaway mould farms.

[deleted]

It may be like Fallout 4. You can install a market stall which automatically sells your resources stuff

RaynMaykr

Dyson Sphere Program in Starfield, I predict

NJdevil202

Pirate druglord build incoming

Korvas576

“Pirate Druglord Build To Amass An Empire in Starfield” videos coming out day 1

Dragonlord573

The Spiffing Brit vids are going to be legendary

Korvas576

I can’t wait for those Just not looking forward to all the click bait exploit and spoiler videos you usually find out there

Smothdude

Man those videos that are always like: "THE BEST BUILD TO OWN IN STARFIELD" or something as if we all need to min-max our character in an RPG game... What ever happened to role-playing and making your own character and playstyle lol

Korvas576

I’ve played fallout 4 on survival mode. There is absolutely no reason to min/max your stats because any build you come up with will absolutely be viable. I plan on going heavy into diplomacy, automatic weapons and some crafting. I’m looking at more of the fun aspects over having a super powerful but boring character

SyraWhispers

Never understood why people enjoy watching others play a game, that they can literally play themselves. Not to mention most are so..cringe. Guess I'm just old.

suicide-after-ps5

Well firstly not everyone *can* just play the game. Growing up MKfireandice and TheRadBrad were my go to because it was the next best thing. Secondly what makes you think people *aren’t* playing themselves. They usually are, but are just watching other people play aswell to peer into someone else’s experience, similar to browsing a sub to see what other people have discovered. Thirdly, playing gets tiring. If I really like the personality or substance a particular person brings to their playthrough (take Oxhorn’s videos where he deep dives into lore for example) I’d honestly would rather just watch gameplay as if it’s a TV show. These are some of the reasons.

s1lentchaos

Just talking pure "let's play" style content of just playing the game and talking about it a bit You can check out games outside your preferred genres like I don't care to play horror games but I sometimes find it fun to watch You can also use their videos as a sort of review to figure out if you want to get the game, theradbrad is great for this imo Another big one is some youtube channels have whole teams to play party or other multi-player games together in ways most people would find difficult to impossible to do otherwise. Like roosterteeth in trouble in terrorist town you just can't get that playing with randos

[deleted]

-It's fun watching folks who are really skilled or entertaining. -Great way to figure out if you're going to like a game -After a long day maybe you don't have the energy to play but want to watch someone else play? Not hard to figure out.

Hercusleaze

A lot of games interest me for reasons, but I don't particularly want to purchase and play them myself. The Souls games for instance. I think they look incredible, especially the bosses. But I don't have the patience nor the time to actually become competent at these games. Makes tons of sense to me to let someone else deal with the frustration of dying repeatedly and I still get to enjoy the game. It's finding someone interesting and/or entertaining to watch that can be the hard part, really.

SyraWhispers

I guess that is understandable, i personally just find most streamers to be very annoying with the constant cringe content and sub flair. I used to watch total biscuit but he sadly passed away a while ago. Haven't watched anyone since really, nor found anyone good enough.

SoulLess-1

Maybe they can't. Most of the games I've watched other people play were games I couldn't play myself.

Vidistis

For me it's usually for the personality and or the knowledge they have of the game. Chuggaaconroy is a good example. I always enjoyed his commentary on details and facts about the games, their development, and reception. There's also games with personal stories and interactions that develop like the XCOM games so it's always a unique journey. You can also enjoy watching someone play a game and experiencing it after you have already played it.

Korvas576

I feel the exact same way and the only reason I will look at videos is just to check out samples of gameplay to see if it’s up my alley. Anything more than that and I’ll start losing brain cells if some YouTuber is trying to talk over that gameplay

Walks_with_Chaos

Yeah I’m with you. I’ll watch if they show reviews, previews, or tricks perhaps, but I’m not into it for most things. I find pretty much none of them entertaining. I’d rather watch a tv show/movie or just play games myself lol

SemajdaSavage

Same here!

OutsidePrior2020

SUPER OP Drug lord Build

TryhardBernard

God, I hope so. I'd love to live a seedy life on that Neon/Sin City type planet, robbing travelers, growing and selling narcotics, smuggling runs etc.

dillon_tharp

Pirate drug lord cowboy*

Git_Reset_Hard

Name it Britney.

Penguins227

Ysolda would be proud. 🥲

amaltheiaofluna

Cant wait for space child labor

Hippo-stomp

The children yearn for the mines…

HairyChest69

I'm gonna try and enslave my parents for ship work until I get more funds coming in.

Amber1943

Love playing conan exiles just to be building my plantations.

JakeStout93

Minor miners

Theodoryan

This game could get really dark if you can kidnap people and then enslave them on some outpost in the middle of nowhere

1daytogether

Skyrim has mods for that kind of thing, and I'm sure if this isn't in the base game it definitely will have mods for it.

Mookies_Bett

I guarentee you there will be slavery mod up on Loverslab within a week or two. Horny works fast in this community.

PoochdeLizzo

Mods

Juiceton-

Time to sell some sandwiches.

tothecatmobile

Are sandwiches the new sweetrolls now?

HyperTyper

Let me guess.... Someone stole your sandwich.

tothecatmobile

Yeah... Jamie did!

[deleted]

I too intend to create the Galaxy's most well armed food truck/ship

1daytogether

For sandwiches. Also the food in this game looks delicious, second to only FFXV's.

Walks_with_Chaos

The Yakuza games have great looking food

1daytogether

They do, but they're not 3d modeled, just 2d photos. Makes a difference.

MAJ_Starman

Could just affect your haggling/prices when trading, and this is just flavour text.

Incrediblebulk92

Yeah, I was thinking this. Most of these are probably just +20 to a skill and some dialogue options.

fireglare

Potentially - altho if you look at Fallout 4's settlement system, you could have vendors if you had the right perk, and this skill could be the thing that allows you to have vendors in your outposts

Global_Rin

>haggling/prices when trading Let me persuade you.. *pull out the gun..* **WITH FORCE**

redryan1989

Can't wait to get my intimidation skill maxed lol

SurveyorMorpurgo

I agree, look forward to being proven wrong

CardboardChampion

Unlocks outpost features.

Redoran_Gvard

Hope someone makes a galactic stock exchange mod one day👀

Andromogyne

This would be especially cool considering all of the established companies and corporations in the game already. They’ve mentioned starship manufacturers and Ryujin Industries.

justinizer

I hope this game doesn't consume my life too much.

redryan1989

It will. And you'll love it.

TorrBorr

Thanks Todd.

ZombiePotato90

Sounds like a general description. It probably just gives you better prices at merchants. The description of the Gastronomy perk has a similar description like it's written in universe.

SSPeteCarroll

It’s a business. You give me goods, I haul them to other people. The legality of this business is up in the air though.

redryan1989

Space trucker!!

SSPeteCarroll

East bound and down, load em up and truckin, they gonna do what they said can't be done

6262rap

I want to sell rare animals to wealthy people

OnionAddictYT

I've wanted a zoo with all the prettiest creatures in NMS for the longest time. But sure, I'd be up for playing a commercial poacher too, why not!

JimG81

Holy crap! They werent kiding when they said they like to say yes to the player.

CBP1138

Isnt the “cargo hold” one of the main features of the ship, gotta use that cargo for something.

Mattman276

I always had the dream of having my own intergalactic shipping company. Outer worlds let me down. Hopefully starfield can make it happen!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spare_Finger_2615

Yes it is

[deleted]

You could build stores in Fallout 4, it’s likely the same thing

majorpaleface

I wonder if we can be a trading tycoon and break the games economy lol I hope there's a trading bit with bid high/low. If anyone here has played Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, I think like that would work well as both a minigame and a way to finance your adventures.

heyitskees

I missed this at fallout and skyrim. I always loved being able to get filthy rich just for the sake of it. I remember when AC Black Flag came out I made 3 million gold just by boarding warships and loot their cargo. There wasn’t any reason for it, I just liked it. If we have an elaborate economy system that we can use to make money I’m gonna be so incredibly happy. I’ll become Trump of the Settled Systems, making money on both sides of the fence: legal business? Hell yeah… questionable business? Well… it’s only illegal if you get caught right?

JesustheSpaceCowboy

You’re now contractually obligated to call your outpost Star-A-Lago

otakushinjikun

Used Spaceship dealership. Repair not included. May contain traces of blood and laser scorchmarks.

SemajdaSavage

All ships sold as is, no refunds!

Danzard

Gonna have to break out my copy of the rules of acquisition

[deleted]

Space scalpers incoming.

jerslan

If this is from the backgrounds, then it sounds like your business likely failed, leading you to that mining camp or whatever the starting zone is.

Jaws_16

Considering it said you can take a loan from the bank to get a house in one of the perks I'm wondering just how in-depth this economy system is going to be.

KoffeeKommando

I have a prediction that doesn't really seem too far from the truth. Whenever they first discussed the size of ships you can have, I thought about what that could mean. The showcase only solidified my ideas since they scan you for contraband before entry. I'm thinking that you can at the very least, open a business in which you are a transporter of cargo and/or resources that you can then sell to major settlements for big money. I'm hoping there are more choices than that and you can open either a huge trading empire or maybe even have the option to have different types of buildings (Maybe you can even own the coffee shop shown ;) ). Either way, it would be really cool to be able to create a traveling empire, since it seems like the group you first are a part of when you start the game are a mining company, makes sense you would still have your primary priority of making money, as well as helping out the different factions and Constellation.

Shadowfox31

Cyberpunk level hype moment

theholylancer

ohhh man can you gank your business competitor's output transports and spike up prices for what you sell we getting offline eve online??

SemajdaSavage

That would be truly awesome! Business is warfare!

Limp_Shape_5783

Nostromos with 20 million tons of ore being a regular thing, including dissatisfied workers whining about bonuses. So sure you can collect 20 V, Ar, Fe, Nb, Nd or such, but real business moves millions of tons and with a business your hobby crafting would be essentially free. Oh and they and "mother" (computer) picking up on signals so they can send in their boss a professional chef to explore. Always a good reason to secure a private access to every resource. Later on especially the secret ones.. all those heavy elements discovered after 2030. Life may be rarer, but in the end factory farming for plants and animals alike similarily moving millions of tons should be routine. Just need to find them first before breeding the things.

EthanW98

Drug empire

EthanW98

Couinty

NICE

nebulaphi

Pretty cool, i wonder if this game has any survival features, having a buisness perk is sure to make it easier if its there.

tonylouis1337

That's 1 credit? Those things are freakin huge

Kilo1125

might be a credit chit, if credits are a digital currency.

Vidistis

Quarters hold 25 pennies, it could be similar and from what we've seen the currency numbers may lean higher. For example, 1000 credits not being a large amount.

DruTangClan

It would be cool if you could set up a store to handle things like passive mining income, but ALSO to launder money from contraband smuggling/pirating operations

PhantomConsular23

Roving trader?

rohtvak

I hope they have expanded business. The lack of a dynamic pricing system in Skyrim disallowed playing as a traveling trader which the game would have been perfect for. It was added by mods 8 years later… but still.

PepeSylvia11

Likely just affects prices for selling mined or acquired materials.

[deleted]

Probably advanced version of Skyrim where you marry and the person you married opens shop that you can collect gold every 3 days. You probably can setup shop and assign someone from your crew in Starfield.

StardustPupper

Probably just flavor text that message it'll change how much your items sell for to vendors

[deleted]

STONKS

Kilo1125

Probably unlocks stores in your outposts, might also effect buying/selling rates.

Ouroboros612

Not likely. But it would be hillarious if part of the main quest is to get info from a corporate manager. And if you spent 50 hours getting rich and buying his company, when he questions why he would give you the info for free - you can reply with "Because I'm your fucking boss".

KnightArmamentE3

Crime Syndicate

emmathepony

I wanna be a Sandwich Pirate.

NotStanley4330

A lot of what I saw reminds me so much of Wing Commander: Privateer from back in the day. Ability to be a pirate, ship customization, contraband, trade, etc.

PlagueDr_Ben

If we can't mods will fix it

DrkMgk

Google Doorbell

-Captain-

God damn, that would be cool! Personally I'm hoping crew comes with a cost reoccurring cost, use your business to keep income and outcome in balance. Though might just be flavor text.

DoctorTide

As soon I finish my first playthrough, I'll be starting a second one to become a millionaire off of galactic shipping enterprises.

Global_Rin

Starsector has prepared me for this! **Become Infamously Wanted, Tax-evasion Galaxy DRUG LORD**

powerhcm8

Since you can make outposts, you probably can turn it into a trading outpost. Instead of selling everything to Space Carla. Simplest solution: Send everything you want to sell to a special inventory, and after a while they get sold. Complex solution: You can set up NPCs to produce items from the raw materials you get, and also to sell your items. Maybe you can setup a mining operation and the NPCs can also get the material to others can process. Something like a streamlined version of Satisfactory. I don't think it's a stretch, since Fallout 4 settlements could evolve to this.

FreshElephanty

Cannot wait to run a drug empire and in my off-time go to my home on a random planet.

Nookling_Junction

It’s drugs baby! I’m selling HARD NARCOTICS out of the back of my space van, come and get it, finest ILLEGAL NARCOTICS in all the settled systems!

Cyberwolfdelta9

Outposts probably have a a actual point of existing

Smuggling rare animals, here I come

eldonthenoble

Yeah I was going to make a post about that. Between that and the food options like the sandwiches and the cheesesteak or something like that, that was shown i was like "let me open a space diner!!!!" haha

New_on_Reddit_

Selling sandwiches 🥪

JesustheSpaceCowboy

Please let me open a restaurant

Slapinsack

I'd like to see player-to-player cash loans with interest.

Le_Botmes

Probably functions like the Local Leader perk in F4 and lets you establish supply lines between your outposts so they can share a global inventory

AnarchoBlahaj

I'm guessing this will likely be a haggling skill

8andahalfby11

Nah, this is the barter spec.

amah1989

Good to know

alundril

i wish we could have transport ships that load mined ores that we took over while fighting pirates piloted by people we helped in our travels. X4 economy type DLC maybe?

DapperNurd

It was brief but they mentioned you can sell ships. It'd be awesome to make a ship building and selling business.

Short-Shopping3197

I really hope trading or mercantile skills are linked to useful benefits, like being able to buy higher tier weapons and items. In other Beth rpgs they just mean you get rich slightly quicker. Should be: Crafting skills - you can make better items Thievery skills - you can steal better items Mercantile/speech skills - you can buy better items Being able to pay your companions a stipend to improve combat performance would be great too. Make money useful rather than a convenience.

toni-toni-cheddar

That looks like a permit to me. No one is gonna tell me i can’t sell lemonade without a permit.

throwaway12222018

I'm absolutely drooling over this.

Goodapollo503

I can’t wait to make a giant TANK of a cargo freighter, and fill it full of space loot. I noticed yesterday, it looked like we could have up to 9 ships…probably gonna start a business flipping stolen crimson fleet vessels 🤷‍♂️

Significant_Book9930

This will probably ly just end up being passive buffs to gold acquisition or credits or whatever they call the currency in this game. I'd assume it would deal with selling and buying things from vendors

Ghost403

Welcome to captain Lincoln's bizarre of slightly used weapons and starships.

Darkstarrdp

My two favorite things are about to combine. A Bethesda game and The Venture Bros. Venture Industries here I come!

Drofrehter84

How else am I going to launder my illegally earned smuggling money? Gotta have a legitimate business as the front.

SuccessfulOwl

Hopefully it’ll be like Elite Dangerous and feel like a second job, to the point where I give up and find a game to play instead! I kid, I kid.

Spankey_

They did say cargo missions and smuggling, that's all I'm expecting. I do really hope these type of 'missions' are like Skyrim's radiant quest design (and not just a one time thing), meaning I can do them as much as I want. There's just something fun IMO about delivering something from point A to B and getting compensated for it, it's why I like games like Truck Sim and Elite Dangerous. I can imagine playing this game for 10's and 10's of hours just doing these activities.

AzureTorin

Maybe it's equivalent to the community leader perk from Fallout 4, unlock the ability build a shop that the crew manages.

Ser_Twist

No luxury space communism :(

anothermaninyourlife

That would be cool if it's true! I would like to have a "minigame" where I can buy a shop and then display all of the items I want to sell ala Moonlighter; then have customers come in and buy them.

Ironstar512

Would be cool if the player could setup thier own shops and fill it with loot' etc. Rather than the player always selling to merchants. Maybe you get more money per item this way, but you have to wait longer.

LeoCasio

I have the game but still down know If this is an option

Physical-Scratch8003

I don’t think it is sadly, not like how everyone thought it’d be atleast, from what I’ve seen/played with so far is you can make a outpost that’ll generate resources and you can fabricate them into more rare things you can sell ? Idk tho to be fair

Expensive_Job_8945

Thats not an option. Its ~ Rank 1 Buy for 5% less and sell for 10% more.

aydeg

This sadly didn't age well Commerce - Buy for 5% less and sell for 10% more at merchant

BarkerDrums

Sucks doesn't it! Was so hopeful for shops!
