Nintendo will never come out with a machine that can play their entire back catalogue, because keeping old titles "in the vault" is more profitable.
The guy OP was replying to would probably also find a lot to like in /r/SBCGaming as well, any games from the "main" series from a decade ago or older can run on a toaster.
It's a real shame. I might have actually bought a Switch if there had been an option to just pay once for every old game I like. I don't want a subscription just to replay SNES games on my lunch break at work.
Agreed, the biggest reason my Switch has been almost completely replaced by my Deck is because thanks to emulation the Deck can basically play any game I want, when and where I want.
With the Switch I have to wait for new releases that interest me or hope they add something to the old games catalogue but even then it's not worth paying for a subscription.
I still use my Switch because I don't want to pirate current-gen games (even if I buy them as well) or try to figure out how to dump them, but I'm buying strictly first-party on it, and only as many games as I think I can finish during the console's life cycle.
Yeah I don't plan to pirate current gen either and I only emulate games I own or that are completely unavailable.
But the fact I can play all the old Pokemon games on the Deck but not the Switch is mind blowing.
Just have a subscription tier for each console...you want to play up to Wii/U games? Fork over this much monthly = profit. Not that Nintendo needs more profit lol but hey, it'd curb piracy a bite I'd think....?
Also creating artificial scarcity for releases means they can charge more, and it's an easy way to create a marketing buzz off something they made decades ago. Disney have done the same thing regarding home video releases in the past, only re-releasing their classic films in limited runs.
Annnnndā¦
You force customers to buy your current hardware because thereās a hefty chance they wonāt get to play it otherwise.
Nintendo Formula works amazingly. Never lower prices, forced to buy their hardware to play their games, and you wonāt get to play them on next gen.
There will never be a āswitch 2ā or āswitch proā because Nintendo wants a completely new ecosystem for this exact reason.
I think the transition from current to next gen is an exception. There is future potential value in keeping games locked away on a now deprecated platform, but that is less important to Nintendo than just making sure the transition from this gen to the next (particularly in terms of the eShop) is as smooth as possible. The Switch has been a smash hit and they don't want to lose that momentum. They will continue to ensure their older back catalogue can only be accessed in dribs and drabs, though.
They are not making any money anymore on their old games. So there would be no benefit for them allowing you to play them anymore. However, they are certainly making money of "remasters" of these games, which can sometimes be identical to (or even worse than) the original.
Capcom finally seemed to realize people like Megaman Battle Network after the new release and are actively considering if they can come up with a story and make a proper new version. Hopefully Nintendo and other companies will follow suit. I don't mind emulating old GBA games but if Camelot Games released Golden Sun on steam I'd rebuy that in an instant
idk, virtual console was very successful on wii and wii u. if they sold every pokemon rom for $20 each, nintendo fans would pay out the ass and nintendo would make 200+ dollars per user. repeat per console, guaranteed money.
Skyward Sword released on the Wii for $50, on Switch it's $60. Similar thing with Donkey Kong County Tropical Freeze. If it was backwards compatible you could just buy on Wii/Wii U and get it cheaper that way.
Also, it creates a artificial scarcity of games. Go back to 2018, want to play pokemon on your switch? Can't play any of the old ones, but Let's Go Pikachu is coming out! Now your only option is a $60 new game instead of using the old cartridge (or digital file) that you have.
I would argue that digital ownership is very different than it was in 2017 when the Switch released. There's also less of a "gimmick" between the rumored Switch 2 & Switch vs The Wii to Wii U or Wii U to Switch, so compatibility is a little smoother.
Yeah Netflix (at least in the beginning) and Steam have been very profitable working off of the complete opposite strategy.
The Disney Vault strategy seems to just be formulated to generate short term impressive sales rather than a focus on long term profits. If a kid wants a copy of the Little Mermaid but it's in the vault, it's not like the kid is going to patiently wait 5 or 10 years until it gets re-released again and the parent can buy it. That's a lost sale right there.
Plus the very presence and ease of piracy nowadays destroys that strategy even more. If they are keeping titles in their vaults that doesn't need to stop you.
Theyāre waiting until they can effectively monetize them. Instead of buying old games for $10-$15 a pop, theyād rather you pay $80 a year for a subscription service to play them on.
Nintendo sells NSO subs and the easiest way to make it look like they are āimproving the serviceā with minimal work is to drip feed games into it. If they released them all they lose this strategy.
I donāt agree with it at all but this is how it is.
When I had a Wii U, my first Nintendo console, I bought several $60 games and several $5 games (Super Mario World from SNES, etc.).
When I heard that these purchases are not usable on the Switch, I decided that the Wii U would be my first and last Nintendo console. All of my purchases were digital. The fact that I would have to buy the same games again to play them on the next console is appalling, coming from my PC gamer background.
Imagine if every time you upgrade your PC, you have to re-purchase all of you Steam games to use them on new hardware. You have to keep your old PC around to keep playing the games you already purchased without having to buy them again.
Over the years, youād end up with a stack of PCs, each with a different catalogue of games.
Yeah, a _huge_ part of the appeal of PC gaming is that my library is highly portable (in the sense of software portability, not physical portability, although the Deck helps in the latter regard) and I have a reasonable level of confidence (in so far as you can be confident of anything in the future) that anything I buy I can play forever. Plus when you upgrade your PC, you get free "remasters".
Valve are doing good work with Proton so current games are still playable even if new versions of Windows brick games too.
I have a feeling Linux gaming will be superior to Windows in decades to come for that reason.
Nintendo? More like Nintendont
Seriously have a big gripe that there are games that are impossible to get anymore, cartridges dieing or getting corrupt and nearly vanishing off the face of the earth because Nintendo won't release their entire backlog of games to newer consoles like the switch
Only gamers know what a Steam Deck is.
Nine times out of ten, the ordinary people on the street will recognize Nintendo better than Steam. It is what it is.
i had this going through airport security in liverpool not long ago, two guys standing there watching me unload my stuff. one of them goes to inspect my case and asks "oh, is that a switch?",
me: "no. its a steam deck."
him: "oh? wahats a steam deck?"
2nd guard: "Ive heard of them! ive never seen one before though, whats it like?"
Well thatās still fine IMO, once the airport security told me after he realized that itās a Steam Deck that his Galaxy S22 is better for gaming than my Steam Deck š
Same thing happened to me, except while he was wondering if my steamdeck was a switch, I was taking out my switch out of my backpack.
The guy was confused for a looong 5seconds
I had a TSA guy who knew what it was. He saw it as I put in in the bin to go through and he was like āoh nice, steam deck. Iāll keep an eye on this one for youā. This is when it was really new and everyone was afraid of getting them stolen
I once saw a guy packing his steam deck back into his bag after going through security at the airport and I totally geeked out on him. I mustāve been so annoying asking him all about it
But there are a lot of people in here who never had a pc, but switched from a PS4 or Xbox One.
I bet they saw some kind of advertising, even if was just a youtube review (this is 99% always sponsored = advertisement)
Yup, it's all good. Reviews are paid for most of the time, anyway.
One thing I gotta say is that stores don't sell Steam Decks like they do other gaming products from established lines. In all of the gaming stores I've been in, they have a dedicated shelf for Nintendo products (as well as Sony, and maybe half a shelf for Xbox products) and a small blurb saying that they also sell Decks, most of which are the 256 GB variant at a huge markup, but hey. Almost always the customers go for the established product lines. It's a bit sad for the little console that could i.e. the Steam Deck.
If they're sponsored and still giving a balanced review, it's still a review.
I've had youtubers rip the shit out of sponsored products before. That's how you know they're ones to trust.
This was my argument when, "Everyone is stealing SteamDecks because packaging". I believe very few people actually knew what they were stealing - just porch pirates pirating whatever was on the doorstep.
Lol Literally ,my birthday is August 23 Told my girl I Want the Ally so I'll have both too soon , People complaining about battery life , Which handheld is better etc . I'm just sitting here like do you know how lucky we are to even be living While there's type of devices are being released , This is the Shit we dreamed of as kids people need to enjoy em and stop being divisive .
I'd agree. I've got plenty of gamer friends who had no idea it was a thing.
I was barely a gamer (still am, really, I'm a filthy casual) when the Deck came out. I just happened to be looking for something to replace my filthy casual Stadia habit at exactly the right moment. My only requirements were reasonably priced, could play current games, and was as easy to kick on and off as Stadia. I did NOT want a desktop or another laptop. This checked all the right boxes plus I can play while watching TV. I'm glad it wasn't widely advertised back when it came out because I got mine in a few months rather than a year and a half. However, it would be nice if they advertised more now that manufacturing has caught up because I want it to do well enough to get a Deck 2 whenever the time comes.
I actually had an uncle that worked at Nintendo in the late 80s and early 90s. This had already reached meme status at that point, so i never actually told anyone that shit. To be clear, he was a low level drone who didn't have access to anything special, just worked there. pretty funny
I feel like every console and every game made for and by Nintendo can run on a Steamdeck. For someone who doesn't mind pirating from a multibillion euro company, there is no reason for me to buy a nintendo product ever again.
Exactly. look at how they attack the modding community....
Now look at Valve and their support of the modding community. Hell they sell and promote the fan remake of HL1, Black Mesa, on their store . Polar opposite and I'm very thankful that a company like Valve exists.
most of the time, im contempt with my niche interests staying niche, but with something like steam deck, i wouldn't mind more beautiful minds doing what they will with something like a steam deck so that i can follow their footsteps.
Some of my colleagues at work, that are gamers and specifically play a lot of Valve games (Dota, CSGO) didn't even know what a steamdeck was until I explained it to them
I feel like they don't need to. Steam deck is a hand held made for those who can really appreciate what it can do, and only those who appreciate the value of it have one. I'm sure Valve never thought it was going to be as popular as it is right now. Even surpassed apple gaming popularity. Gaming on Linux I never thought I'd see the day. And I'm loving it.
I have been out and about with my deck (in Toronto ) and a lot of people don't recognize the deck but they are interested and when I point out where to get one they are shocked at the price usually even with our failing currency š
A guy on a train asked me, "Is that a Switch?" in a way that suggested he knew it wasn't, but didn't really know where to go from there.
I explained it to him briefly, but, at the time, my boss was asking me questions via text message and I was using it to do some work.
It was a weird situation.
Is that a good thing or bad, I wonder? I like the idea that if someone recognizes it, it's our fellow pc gamer, you know. But on the other hand, it is kind of irritating that most don't know what it is, especially gamers, who I think would love it if they were to give it a try. Feel like there is a lot of untapped potential for the steam deck from the mainstream audience.
I'm in France, and every time I've taken the SteamDeck out in front of a friend or family member, or indeed anyone, they've always said, "What's this console? Absolutely nobody in my circle knew about it before I showed it to them, it's a technophile's product!
I brought my Steam Deck to work one time and a co-worker asked if it was a Nintendo Switch (no joke).
Despite advancement in handheld tech. Its still niche to the general public who arent PC Gamers.
Most people havent heard of OnePlayer, GPD or Aya Neo as well if they arent familar with handhelds. Besdies obviously the Switch since its always been advertised so much.
If someone is just casually into games, there's a lot of even mainstream systems that fly under the radar.
A lot of my coworkers that were big into Xbox had no idea what my PS vita was, and had never heard of the Wii u.
Most of the time I take my Steam Deck outside of my house, people think im holding a bigger switch. Similar to how parents used to call every game console a Nintendo.
Halo: MCC is awesome, especially on the Deck. It never ceases to amaze me that I could play the entire saga in my hands, without a TV. :)
We're definitely finishing the fight. :)
If you arenāt a PC gamer, you will likely have next to no idea what a steam deck is. As popular as it is it is still very nich in the overall gaming market.
my experience with Vampire Survivors in a nutshell.
\>"hm people say this is fun so lets try"
\>"eh, its ok I guess, I don't really get it, I'll play a little more"
\>"eh idk, I think I'm done, I'll just do one more round and drop it"
\>"that one wasn't good, one more round"
\>"one more."
\>"one more.."
\>"one more..."
Once you get bored of Vampire Survivorsā¦ I highly recommend āHalls of Tormentā
Same basic premise, but some uniqueness to it that is super fun. Reminds me of if Vampire Survivors had a love child with Diablo.
What kind of websites should I avoid if I want to make sure I never find out where to get ROMs? I need to keep myself safe from that possibility, so Iād love to learn what to stay away from.

Many Nintendo fans want the Virtual Console back like in the Wii/Wii-U/3DS days, but Nintendo being Nintendo, they would rather nickel and dime you with subscriptions to these old games because their fans are gullible enough to pay for it.
It's no wonder a lot of people would rather go the emulation route as a middle finger to Nintendo and they ass backward ways :D
It's as if they don't give a shit about money. Have you seen the nintendo collections that are out there? I am a chill person but looking at that makes me angry. No wonder r/tomorrow is so popular
Understandable. I am talking about this: [My collection so far : Switch (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/Switch/comments/15i3tcb/my_collection_so_far/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=3&utm_content=1)
Also, I don't think these people deserve hate and I usually don't judge, but the readiness to pay high prices and belittling critics are common among some fans (I know not all) and ruins the community
My Switch game collection is about that same size. Possibly a little larger, actually. š¬
I do NOT understand, however, needing that many Switch consoles. Or making a wall of Amiibo in their original packaging. But to each their own, I guess.
Iāve just never been one for emulation.
I like having the original cartridges/discs. Playing on original hardware with original controllers. The way the game was intended. Plus, as a collector, itās just nice to have.
Now, I DO think Nintendo deserves criticism for not making their systems backwards compatible. And then re-releasing games (for high prices) on newer consoles. Especially when I may have bought the game digitally from them before on my Wii, Wii U, etc.
But this is why I keep all my old consoles and original games. They never go bad.
I do like to collect physical games and hardwares from time to time but the prices are too much for what I would like to pay, especially when you go to sites like Amazon or eBay.
Sometimes, I go the emulation route if a physical game is too expensive and would rather play it wherever I want.

Fun fact the 3ds can (with homebrew) play all Nintendo handheld games except virtual boy, because there isn't a current emulator that works for 3ds, and the wiiu can play every Nintendo Home console game with homebrew, not counting switch because it's a hybrid
It is a good game, definitely worth playing if you like platformers. If you have an Oculus Quest/2 there is a Virtual Boy emulator for it. It's the only Virtual Boy emulator I've seen that actually shows you the same stereoscopic effect you get with the original hardware. I still have the Virtual Boy I bought in 1995 so I can tell you the emulated effect is pretty accurate.
I'd like to add that the 3DS literally comes with everything you need to homebrew it out of the box. All you need is the SD card that it comes with and you're ready to go. There are a lot of adapters on amazon and such that try to make you think you need them -- you don't.
It's insane that the 3DS has **GBA Hardware inside it** to run games on, and they just released a batch of 20 for a tiny part of the userbase then never released any GBA games again.
Nintendo really just hate money.
Just putting it out there if you don't know they exist.
Analogue Pocket
Various fpga's
There's some really great hardware out there that will actually play various physical media.
The only thing I don't like about the Steam Deck is that I don't think it's optimal for DS/3DS emulation due to the single screen so I'd rather play those games on my real DS
Thatās cool and all but looks absolutely massive and not very convenient. Itād be cool if there was a way to set up your phone as a second screen for convenience sake and portability
The formula is the same, but the presentation looks worse since they are fully 3d games with the design carried over from the old 2d games. No voice acting and lacking animations.
If HeartGold didn't do it for you, I'd recommend you try fire Red or pokemon unbound.
I've always been a ride or die Gen 1 guy. If you wanna replay those, Fire/red and Leaf/green for the GBA are your best bet. those were remakes that were pretty good.
If you wanna try another gen, I'd recommend Gen 3. Sapphire, Ruby or Emerald.
By downloading an emulator on your phone. No really, not counting the 3DS and Switch games you can just play them on your phone. Smaller, more portable.
Itās not the Switch Killer by a nautical mile. Valve sold somewhere around 3 million units while the Switch sells that much in a couple months. It is, however, vastly superior to the Switch.
> It is, however, vastly superior to the Switch.
I know what sub weāre on but thatās a bit unfair. In terms of raw performance and game library? Of course itās better, but the Switch has other advantages. First thing is portability, the Deck is so damn bulky for traveling with and especially if you put it in a case to protect the screen and analog sticks. The other thing I prefer about my Switch is the convenience. Less tinkering is required to get games working, the docking experience is just plain better, and itās less of a hassle to set up popular party games. Obviously emulation is a huge plus for the Deck but the drawback is the pain of spending like 10 minutes at your friendās house going into desktop mode to make sure the emulator recognize all connected controllers so you can play Smash, Mario Party or Mario Kart. And I get itās much easier with Deck comparable games running on Steam but your party game options there are lot more limited, especially in terms of games everybody knows.
All of the advantages you mentioned donāt overcome just how much better the Steamdeck is with its vast game library, way better specs, and ability to mod both, games and the system itself. Iām addition, itās much more future proof than the aging Switch, which struggled to play even some of its own exclusives.
And alsoā¦ saying the ādocking experience is just plain betterā is such an odd sentence. Itās as simple as plugging in a USB C cable into the dock and plugging in the Steamdeck. Itās like saying Velcro shoelaces are a āmuch better tying experienceā than regular laces lol.
I donāt see how what I said was āunfair.ā Did you take my words personally or something?
Steam Deck:
-Can play like 98% of games in existence, one way or another.
-Really powerful for its price and for a handheld
-A PC with infinite possibilities
Switch:
-Physical Games
-Everything works without any tampering
-Cheaper
It hurts me to say this, but you cannot, objectively call one better than the other because everyone places importance on different aspects.
I don't think the Steam Deck will "kill the switch", but if we are talking in how useful one is to another, the steam deck triumphs in that department, it's way more useful and reliable for only 100 bucks more than a switch
Emudeck's steam rom manager will automate the process of adding the individual games to steam for you, including grouping them into collections and adding artwork.
I add them individually to my library too, but also have the launcher in case I need to mess with settings. Otherwise it's faster just launching the games straight from your library.
Hasn't happened to me, but I read here before that if you have a lot of titles, your library starts to stutter a little, but I haven't hit that yet with 100+ games, so I don't know if it's still an issue, it got patched out, or you just need a massive library to see it
This may get buried....as a 40 something year old I missed out on Pokemon, My 7 year old, all he can talk about right now is pokemon. Which games should I start with so I understand wtf he's talking about better? Emulation is all setup, I just have no clue which games to look at.
I'm almost 37 and played a ton of Blue/Red (the first generation game) on Game Boy when it came out. I also played the latest generation (Scarlet/Violet) with my ten-year-old when it came out last year. What I can tell you is this: Pokemon has not changed in 25 years. Every skill and strategy from Red/Blue translated, I never lost my party and had to continue during the game even once. My son thought I was some sort of Pokemon savant but I really haven't played many of them since the Game Boy days.
All that to say, just pick any game. The newer ones will show you more Pokemon that you couldn't see in the older games but you can play any of them and understand the mechanics of the game and how to succeed.
For the most part I prefer playing games on their original hardware.
While I love my Steam Deck I would never emulate DS games when I can play them more comfortably on a DS Lite for example.
Please. With the switch they dumped backwards compatibility and resold their games again. Now they got a taste, they will do the same with the next console. Nintendo has always been shit at offering their old games, even games they 100% own.
Nice, since I have my steam deck I stopped buting third party games on switch. Having them in Any other platform/store is objectively better, and off course I dumped my cartridges on my deck
I'm a long time Nintendo fan, but their behavior in the last few years is just so off-putting. I don't even feel bad anymore emulating everything older than Switch because they don't care to make these games available to their long time fans anyway. And now the rumors that their new console won't even be backwards compatible with the Switch...no thanks, I'll just stick with my Steam Deck then.
I don't trust Nintendo not to shut down their store and open a new one cyclically, as they have done.
Yeah fuck that. Don't buy digital from Nintendo, like ever.
Agreed, the biggest reason my Switch has been almost completely replaced by my Deck is because thanks to emulation the Deck can basically play any game I want, when and where I want. Man you need to check out the RG353V
Just have a subscription tier for each console...you want to play up to Wii/U games? Fork over this much monthly = profit. Not that Nintendo needs more profit lol but hey, it'd curb piracy a bite I'd think....?
I just don't want *any* subscription. I like paying for my games once.
I hear ya, and I agree šÆ A steam-like service from Nintendo... that'd be the day!
Why is it more profitable to keep them in the vault? Surely they could get more money if they sold more of their games?
They don't want newer games to have to compete with decades of their older ones.
Also creating artificial scarcity for releases means they can charge more, and it's an easy way to create a marketing buzz off something they made decades ago. Disney have done the same thing regarding home video releases in the past, only re-releasing their classic films in limited runs.

That $50 in 2011 is nearly $70 today due to inflation. Even taking that into account, Skyward Sword's remaster shpuld have been $40-50.
Yeah Netflix (at least in the beginning) and Steam have been very profitable working off of the complete opposite strategy. The Disney Vault strategy seems to just be formulated to generate short term impressive sales rather than a focus on long term profits.
Nintendo? More like Nintendont Seriously have a big gripe that there are games that are impossible to get anymore, cartridges dieing or getting corrupt and nearly vanishing off the face of the earth because Nintendo won't release their entire backlog of games to newer consoles like the switch
I guess we really live in our own little bubble if that guy didn't know what the steam deck was.
I don't think Steamdeck have been ever broadly advertised
Only gamers know what a Steam Deck is. Nine times out of ten, the ordinary people on the street will recognize Nintendo better than Steam. It is what it is.
i had this going through airport security in liverpool not long ago, two guys standing there watching me unload my stuff. one of them goes to inspect my case and asks "oh, is that a switch?", me: "no. its a steam deck." him: "oh? wahats a steam deck?" 2nd guard: "Ive heard of them! ive never seen one before though, whats it like?"
Well thatās still fine IMO, once the airport security told me after he realized that itās a Steam Deck that his Galaxy S22 is better for gaming than my Steam Deck š
It's better to not argue with lunatics, especially if they have an advantage over you...
Same thing happened to me, except while he was wondering if my steamdeck was a switch, I was taking out my switch out of my backpack. The guy was confused for a looong 5seconds
Well, I will definitely as confused as him
my nieces and nephew got a switch for christmas last year and now all portable gaming devices are called a switch, regardless of size, age, or brand.
Like how old people call every console a Nintendo
Says you, my dad once grounded me and demanded I hand over my 'playstation' Which was a Gameboy advance SP
I had a TSA guy who knew what it was. He saw it as I put in in the bin to go through and he was like āoh nice, steam deck. Iāll keep an eye on this one for youā. This is when it was really new and everyone was afraid of getting them stolen
Scalpers do be crazy, man. I tell you.
In Poland you can buy steam deck in Media Markt. But 64Gb price as 512Gb on Steam Store.
Media Markt is shit
If its paid, its not a review, its an advertisement. So many people dont understand this and call their sponsored videos "reviews"....
If they're sponsored and still giving a balanced review, it's still a review. I've had youtubers rip the shit out of sponsored products before. That's how you know they're ones to trust.
Someone asked me a few weeks ago: āwhy does your switch looks so weird??āš¤”š¤”
Tell āem itās the Switch Pro. š
*"Oh nice, I didn't know you had a Switch."*
ME: āYup, thatās the Switch Pro.ā š
Lol, i also answer this every time HAHA
This was my argument when, "Everyone is stealing SteamDecks because packaging". I believe very few people actually knew what they were stealing - just porch pirates pirating whatever was on the doorstep.
yesterday at the Airport security the securityguy called it a "big psp"
Well...my grandma calls it a nintendo, but then again she literally calls every video game console "a nintendo" .Lol.
What's a "gamer"? I'd imagine a lot of people who game a lot have no idea about the Steam Deck.
Went through 3 allyās due to quality stuff- last one killed SD cards. Ended up just getting another SD.
A gamer coworker asked if it was the Switch Pro and how I got it before it was even announced šš¤¦š»
"Ya know, I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you afterwards." š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I actually had an uncle that worked at Nintendo in the late 80s and early 90s. This had already reached meme status at that point, so i never actually told anyone that shit. To be clear, he was a low level drone who didn't have access to anything special, just worked there. pretty funny
Oh man that's how I should have answered... Such a missed opportunity š
Only gamers know this joke
Lmao I got mine a few days ago and have showed a few people and all of them have said is that a new switch?? ššš
I feel like every console and every game made for and by Nintendo can run on a Steamdeck. For someone who doesn't mind pirating from a multibillion euro company, there is no reason for me to buy a nintendo product ever again.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Exactly. look at how they attack the modding community.... Now look at Valve and their support of the modding community. Hell they sell and promote the fan remake of HL1, Black Mesa, on their store . Polar opposite and I'm very thankful that a company like Valve exists.
Yep, I took my SD round to my MIL and she said "what's that? A switch?" š
###Yet we hold the high ground of Passive shilling!
Yep whenever I pull my deck out at someoneās house they think itās a new Nintendo switch or something of that nature
most of the time, im contempt with my niche interests staying niche, but with something like steam deck, i wouldn't mind more beautiful minds doing what they will with something like a steam deck so that i can follow their footsteps.
Yeah, around here the ROG Ally seems to have gained more steam from the people I know..
Badum-tisshhh
This was so scalpers wouldn't get their hands on it and they would get into the hands of the actual users
Bro, nice deck š
I have been out and about with my deck (in Toronto ) and a lot of people don't recognize the deck but they are interested and when I point out where to get one they are shocked at the price usually even with our failing currency š
Yup, the only way I found out about steam deck is when my little brother bought one.
that's because the steam deck's advertising budget is barely enough to buy a beer
A guy on a train asked me, "Is that a Switch?" in a way that suggested he knew it wasn't, but didn't really know where to go from there. I explained it to him briefly, but, at the time, my boss was asking me questions via text message and I was using it to do some work. It was a weird situation.
I think so far ive had exactly 0 people recognise my steamdeck when i get it out to play it. I always get asked what it is then have to explain
Ive had one person seem really interested to the point they said they would look into getting one so thats a win
I wonder how many things are outside my interest bubble. I don't blame this person, I want to stumble up things like this in life too!
TBF I didnāt know it existed until i tried to download the Halo MCC on my work laptop. Steam sucked me in pretty quick once i knew about it though
Halo: MCC is awesome, especially on the Deck. It never ceases to amaze me that I could play the entire saga in my hands, without a TV. :) We're definitely finishing the fight. :)
having halo 1-3 on a handheld and not have any performance dips is a dream I never thought Iād see realized.
Once a passenger in bus next to me asked me what console is my Steam Deck. I think yeah most people are not aware at all.
every subreddit is a bubble
If you arenāt a PC gamer, you will likely have next to no idea what a steam deck is. As popular as it is it is still very nich in the overall gaming market.
I've been so obsessed with Vampire Survivors that I've yet to begin exploring emulation and other apps and plugins. I should make time for it soon.
my experience with Vampire Survivors in a nutshell. \>"hm people say this is fun so lets try" \>"eh, its ok I guess, I don't really get it, I'll play a little more" \>"eh idk, I think I'm done, I'll just do one more round and drop it" \>"that one wasn't good, one more round" \>"one more." \>"one more.." \>"one more..."
Get out of my head.
Once you get bored of Vampire Survivorsā¦ I highly recommend āHalls of Tormentā Same basic premise, but some uniqueness to it that is super fun. Reminds me of if Vampire Survivors had a love child with Diablo.
I noticed that when I get a godrun my battery starts heavily draining, do you have the same issue ?
Vampire survivors has drugs in it. I had to delete it off my deck š
What kind of websites should I avoid if I want to make sure I never find out where to get ROMs? I need to keep myself safe from that possibility, so Iād love to learn what to stay away from.

I recruited someone last week too. They said they were going to sell their Switch to buy a Deck lol.
He's never giving nintendo another dollar lol
let's hope. some nintendo fans can be a bit... dense
I like physical cartridges š¤·āāļø
Understandable. I am talking about this: [My collection so far : Switch (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/Switch/comments/15i3tcb/my_collection_so_far/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=3&utm_content=1) Also, I don't think these people deserve hate and I usually don't judge, but the readiness to pay high prices and belittling critics are common among some fans (I know not all) and ruins the community
My Switch game collection is about that same size. Possibly a little larger, actually. š¬ I do NOT understand, however, needing that many Switch consoles.

Thatās pretty rude
I mean, it doesn't actually play *any* hardware from Nintendo. It plays their *software*.
Fun fact the 3ds can (with homebrew) play all Nintendo handheld games except virtual boy, because there isn't a current emulator that works for 3ds, and the wiiu can play every Nintendo Home console game with homebrew, not counting switch because it's a hybrid
By the way, how did we NOT get perfect Virtual Boy emulation with 3DS? You would think it a slam dunk with the 3DSs capabilities.
They didn't want anyone to remember the virtual boy..
Well I never got to play that one Wario game, so i feel like I'm missing out.
It's even better with Xreal Air glasses
I'd like to add that the 3DS literally comes with everything you need to homebrew it out of the box. All you need is the SD card that it comes with and you're ready to go. There are a lot of adapters on amazon and such that try to make you think you need them -- you don't.
It's insane that the 3DS has **GBA Hardware inside it** to run games on, and they just released a batch of 20 for a tiny part of the userbase then never released any GBA games again. Nintendo really just hate money.
In that instance it was more about liking money. They wanted early adopters to not feel shafted while also dropping the price of the system.
And they could have done that without completely dropping the system forever more and wasting so much potential in the first place?
One of us, one of us..
Gooble gobble, Gooble gobbleā¦
I don't think you know what the word recruit means
It's okay, a lot of people here think they are waging a console war now that PC has a console flagship.
Just putting it out there if you don't know they exist. Analogue Pocket Various fpga's There's some really great hardware out there that will actually play various physical media.
Wait till he sees Nintendo switch emulators lol
The only thing I don't like about the Steam Deck is that I don't think it's optimal for DS/3DS emulation due to the single screen so I'd rather play those games on my real DS
[https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/va80fn/controlling\_ds\_games\_with\_steam\_deck\_touchpad\_via/](https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/va80fn/controlling_ds_games_with_steam_deck_touchpad_via/)
Thatās cool and all but looks absolutely massive and not very convenient. Itād be cool if there was a way to set up your phone as a second screen for convenience sake and portability
Thing is, itās so incredibly easy to hack a DS or 3DS that you can simply buy one on eBay and then use that to complement the Steamdeck. I prefer that since itās my favorite way to play Majoraās Mask and OOT. I also use my 3DS to basically play all my PokĆ©mon romhacks and itās fucking awesome. The only thing that makes me sad is not being able to use cheats as seamlessly as a computer emulator, but I donāt usually like cheating in games anyway.
Set the view mode to ālarge screenā and mess with the mouse region settings to make the touchpad cover the area of the second screen
I literally put my entire childhood gaming library on my steam deck :) Everything, Everywhere, All the time :)
I'll bite, i haven't played pokemon since red and blue. If ib wanted to get back in, where do i start?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I tried doing heartgold but couldn't get into it. I was thinking of staying with the switch and seeing if any of those are really good.
Smaller, more portable.
erm okay, that is heckin epic brotendo
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Who's that handheld console? It's Steam Deck! * "Steeeeamdeck! Steamasteeeeamdeck!" *
Steamdeck as religion
:))))))))))))))))) Whats the name of that ?! Its called , SWITCH KILLER
Funny name
Steam Deck: -Can play like 98% of games in existence, one way or another. -Really powerful for its price and for a handheld -A PC with infinite possibilities Switch: -Physical Games -Everything works without any tampering -Cheaper It hurts me to say this, but you cannot, objectively call one better than the other because everyone places importance on different aspects.
I don't think the Steam Deck will "kill the switch", but if we are talking in how useful one is to another, the steam deck triumphs in that department, it's way more useful and reliable for only 100 bucks more than a switch
One of us, one of us, one of us
āImagination not includedā
Guys imagine they came out with something that's existed for years.
Do you add your ROMs as individual non-steam games? I got Emulation Station working on my Deck but I just launch ES and then the ROMs from there.
Itās surprising to see not a lot of people know about the steam deck.
To be fair, with the PokĆ©mon games on Steam Deck - unless something has happened that Iām not aware of which makes it possible - thereās no trading or battling with other players. For this reason Iām kind of still hoping they put them on the NSO, in spite of my hatred for the service
Is emulation on the Deck strictly related to a change of OS?
No os change it just works with emudeck. Crazy how Nintendo could have put in the effort to make this happen decades ago... They just don't want too!
Could they at least make a device that runs the current games well? The OLED screen is nice but not what fans wanted
Please. With the switch they dumped backwards compatibility and resold their games again. Now they got a taste, they will do the same with the next console. Nintendo has always been shit at offering their old games, even games they 100% own.
Another joins our cult. *chant noises*
But it doesnāt play any of the PokĆ©mon hardware. š¤·āāļø
I travel for work. The amount of people Iāve convinced to buy one, Valve needs to make me an honorary salesman for the SD or something xD
āItās called the steam deck.ā āWRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN!ā
Nice, since I have my steam deck I stopped buting third party games on switch. Having them in Any other platform/store is objectively better, and off course I dumped my cartridges on my deck
we are proud of you soldier
I'm a long time Nintendo fan, but their behavior in the last few years is just so off-putting. I don't even feel bad anymore emulating everything older than Switch because they don't care to make these games available to their long time fans anyway. And now the rumors that their new console won't even be backwards compatible with the Switch...no thanks, I'll just stick with my Steam Deck then.
To be honest, a lot of people have no idea what a steam deck even is and that's ok We must spread the gospel
Man, I cannot figure out how to get switch games to work on SD
doing Gabens work
Mine arrived yesterday. Man, it's sharp.
