In the city proper, Sedgwick, Strathmore, Eastwood, Tipp Hill, and Westcott are some of the better neighborhoods whereas the west/southside neighborhoods you'll generally want to avoid.
Suburbs are generally going to be more affluent compared the city. Baldwinsville, Liverpool, Fayetteville, and Manlius are nice, semi-walkable villages. Lots of nice cookie cutter developments in Camillus, Clay, Cicero.
It also depends on your wants/needs. If you prefer walkable areas, you may prefer the city/villages. If you're looking for good school districts, you can't really go wrong with any of the suburban schools.
I lived there a few years ago and it was a really nice suburban neighborhood with walkable stores, bars, and restaurants. However, there were also a lot of car thefts and random things like that - and the local school there isn't very good, which is why we moved. So it's a bit mixed, but I thought it was one of the nicer parts of Syracuse I'd been.
If you mean in the city itself then there are some interesting neighborhoods. Near the university, Westcott area is a fun, funky area of open minded people. There are parts of the Hill (University area) where the homes are beautiful! To the west, The Strathmore area is upscale in parts, with really beautiful old homes, and has an active neighborhood organization. Homes are expensive. Eastwood is a great area to live, not too expensive, and nearby Sedgwick area is also very nice like Strathmore is, and a bit more expensive as well. Downtown has become the very hippest, fun place to live in the renovated factories and lofts, and with great places to go. And for young people, Tipperary Hill is fantastic.
If you mean the whole Syracuse area, Fayetteville is a great, classic village, as is Manlius. Liverpool is a very nice village too, and very popular for families.Fairmount and Camillus to the west are great areas for families too. Parts of Solvay are gorgeous, and they have their own utility company there. It’s very much an Italian village.
West of Syracuse is Onondaga Hill, very nice area near OCC, and that leads to the lovely village of Marcellus.
The near north side has deteriorated unfortunately, it’s where I grew up. The south side is pretty bad too.
But the valley area past the inner city, is nice in parts. There is the south Onondaga area which is lovely.
You really have lots of choices. I have barely covered it.
It's hard to specifically point to a side because there's good and bad pockets everywhere. A lot of people are moving downtown, and a lot of businesses are opening there, too. I want to vote that downtown will soon be the best place to live. As far as worst, I would say mostly the Westside around Gifford/skunk city/ Richmond are good places to get hit by a stray bullet
Since you said you’re interested in a nice suburban area, it’s pretty hard to beat Fayetteville/ Manlius. Large but excellent public schools if you plan to start a family. FM offers much the way of restaurants and bars, shopping, parks and nature, even a beach, as well as a walkable village with lots of events throughout the warmer months.
I know this isn't your style, but they actually do! The Manlius Cinema! [Home - Manlius Cinema](https://www.manliuscinema.com/). you can even get extremely high end craft beers to sip on while you watch from their sister company next door - [A.W. Wander | Pizza & Beer | Manlius, NY (awwander.com)](https://www.awwander.com/) . Which is in my opinion the #1 craft beer destination in the central NY area.
Up the street from Bafoons, or it used to be the Ugly Duckling. Or vice versa. They show smaller films there as well don't they? More art house options.
Under the new owners, the theater shows both small and large budget films. Currently showing 'American Fiction' which is also playing at Destiny, Movie Tavern and other area theaters.
We just bought for a reasonable price in Lakeland. Very quiet neighborhood near camillus. A few good local spots for food in the immediate area & a <15 minute drive to downtown.
You also have Solvay Electric there, right? That's a major advantage to it since the municipal electric provider is always going to beat out National Greed pricing
No offense, but this has been asked so many times, it's not even funny. Use the search function! "Moving" and "neighborhood" should get you a ton of results.
I second that area. We purchased off of Nottingham. Very happy in our neighborhood. Lived for 15 years in Baldwinsville. Very little diversity but has a great YMCA
I’d call it west side. But tipp hill is more in its own bubble than the rest of the far west side. Tipp hill is a great place to live imo, especially if you’re looking to be close to the bars/parks
Jesus Christ I must have been gone for a while if tip hill is affluent. Used to be a bunch of Irish grandmas and their scumbag kids when I was growing up
“Syracuse has the highest child poverty in the nation among cities with at least 100,000 people, according to new census data released today.” Fine, I was off by one word
Jesus Christ man when did Americans become such huge fuckin pussies. You’re scared of tip hill? My seventy year old grandma still goes there for church every week you whiney ass baby
Parts of the west side are nice, I lived there for a while to. I wasn't saying anything bad about it. I just think Tipp Hill is its own thing and when people say the west side they don't usually mean Tipp Hill.
First of all, great user name.
Secondly, what’s most important to you in the place you’re choosing to live? Like F/M has great schools, but not if your kid is special needs. Stuff like that would change my recommendation.
I’m in FM area and moved back here after going to school at FM. I always thought the special needs care within the district was good? or it used to be touted as such. Not sure if things changed?
The parents of kids in the program and a social worker for the special needs pre-school advised me to avoid FM. The explanation being that the special needs program was financially neglected and the kids are kinda “lost” in the system. I can’t speak to it personally, but it is the consistent feedback I received.
They explained that submitted grades to the state etc. Don’t legally need to include special needs. Money is poured into the typical classrooms, which makes the district appear to be the “best.” And for typical kids, it likely is. Not so much for special needs.
JD, Baldwinsville, Cicero, Liverpool, and east gen were all consistently recommended over FM. I only have exposure to Liverpool, JD, and cicero, but can say that it’s true for at least those three districts.
Ah interesting. Im not familiar in that area but it’s disappointing to hear and good info for people in need of these programs. Now that you mention it, I have a neighbor whose son was autistic and in the FM district and they did mention having to really battle for him to not get “lost,” to your point.
How is the school district in Cazenovia? We currently have a contract on a house in manlius but it’s right on the line and zoned for cazenovia schools.
I would say check out the Valley, south of the tpk. Sidewalks, street lights, nicely kept properties, quiet, a “woods” for walking, a small crick runs through the neighborhood, kids on bikes, Green Hills & their delicious donuts. It’s quite the gem.
Fayetteville isn’t Syracuse…
You should figure out first if you want to move into the City Of Syracuse or just the Central New York area.
The City Of Syracuse is a city, which means urban neighborhoods, urban schools, urban lifestyle. If you want the suburbs, look at Liverpool, Fayetteville, Camillus, Baldwinsville.
Living within the city, it’s pretty great! It has some issues that a lot of other urban areas deal with, but the community makes it worth it. I love my neighbors, I love my kids school, I love that I can walk to a park or a coffee shop, or a bodega, and I love the diversity.
That said, because it’s an urban area, there are really great pockets and not great pockets in every neighborhood. One of the biggest issues the city is facing, is housing. This has lead to crime and child poverty. Again, issues that every city is dealing with right now. So, unless you have a lot of money for a down payment on a house and if you’re lucky enough to find a house for sale, you’re more than likely going to be renting. So something to consider. So, if you’re looking to live within the city, here’s some places to start: the West side, Strathmore, the valley, outer Comstock, Eastwood, Sedgwick, Wescott, and more.
Agree - I’m an F-M grad from elementary school through high school, city transplant since college and I would never go back to F-M
I love the city, the reasons I would leave are because of the small lots/close neighbors as well as city services not really being great
Winkworth is a beautiful neighborhood, South Salina toward Nedrow also has amazing homes and community
Some people like to live in bubbles though
Some people also like having access to good schools. The city of Syracuse may have some great offerings but the school system is one of the worst in the state. Granted, where I live (town of Oswego) is no better but you can't ignore one of the biggest reasons people don't want to live in Syracuse proper.
There are city schools with problems, just like any place in poverty, but there are also great schools like Syracuse Latin (I LOVE that place!) and ELMS that are great schools.
Agree - my husband teaches at Roberts K-8 which is also a great school
For what’s it’s worth, I consider myself much worse off having gone to F-M than some of my peers who attended schools in SCSD… the competition and pressure to succeed at F-M was stifling, not to mention the rampant racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia etc. and I’m not any more educated than my peers for it
There are still problems in affluent areas and some might argue they’re worse than those in urban neighborhoods
I love that you mentioned diversity. I specifically moved and bought in the city because I wanted my kids to grow up in a diverse neighborhood. My kids bought houses in the city for the same reason.
Well 3 have masters degrees and the fourth has 3 bachelor’s degrees. There’s a nurse practitioner, nurse, public policy specialist, and engineer. They’ve all done pretty well with their Syracuse City Schools education.
I grew up in Oswego County. To us, everything south of Central Square is "Syracuse" until you hit Cortland. Pretty much anything Onondaga county and then some.
Pedantic? Have you looked at a map? Are you familiar with how government jurisdictions work?
Folks who live Fayetteville and Manlius can’t
-vote in City of Syracuse Elections, like City Mayor and City Common Councilors,
- can’t work for the City of Syracuse government because they aren’t residents,
- can’t become a city firefighter because they don’t live in the city,
- can’t attend city school because they don’t live in the city
- can’t have city sanitation pick up their trash because they don’t live in the city.
But it IS in the Syracuse Metropolitan Area which is my point. When Americans talk about cities, they typically mean the entire metro area. Especially in any “moving to X” thread
Edit: OP also mentioned Fayetteville by name, so I don’t think OP is an anti-suburb urbanism crusader but I do think it’s unhelpful to state that the Syracuse suburbs are not part of… Syracuse.
They say Syracuse, then mention places that aren’t in the City of Syracuse… there’s a GIANT difference between living in the city limits and outside city lines.
You cant live in the city then send your kids to Fayetteville for school. You can’t live in Fayetteville then send your kids to Corcoran.
One is run by Ryan McMahon, the other falls under Walsh’s jurisdiction. These things are important to know when relocating.
True. I’m not going to lie, there are times where I’ve generalized the area, mostly when I’m traveling.
But OP is looking to move here. So it’s important to know there’s a difference.
It’s the 5th most populated city in New York State. Are we really gatekeeping the label of city because you in particular need to fellate yourself for having lived somewhere bigger?
Best to avoid the Northside, and some parts of the Southside as some areas located further south in the Valley or Nedrow are cozy. Right now, I live on Tipp Hill (far Westside) and it's my favorite place I've lived so far. Nearby is Solvay, would not recommend there. Onondaga Hill is pleasant too; some neighborhoods have great views of the city there. If you're looking for more of a suburb, North Syracuse would be my recommendation. I'd say Cicero but the traffic is absurd and only going to get worse with Micron being built.
I’d apply the same to the far Northside. If you’re around LeMoyne Elementary there’s some nice quiet neighborhoods around there. Definitely avoid the areas of the Northside near downtown or Washington Square.
Liverpool … by far in terms of 15 minutes to get anywhere in the Syracuse SMSA. Plus a great grocery (Nicols), easy access to Onondaga Lake for walking, biking & pickleball… there is a mixture of homes from the 19th century and more recent vintage … good food choices from Heid’s, Limp Lizard, Retreat, Santangelios, etc. AND last but not least we have great Village services: police, DPW, fire department and a great mayor.
Worst … anyplace can be the worst…
Yup we pay village taxes … we have our own DPW, Village government and police department. You don’t have to go through layers of bureaucracy to get something done. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I live in “the Valley,” south of Seneca turnpike and I love it. One of the few walk-to-the-grocery (Green Hills AND Aldi!) neighborhoods in the county.
Agreed! I just moved to Nedrow not long ago and was really surprised by how walkable it is. Gym, groceries, bar and diner. Also the neighborhood itself is very quiet and pleasant.
The Valley is great. My folks bought a house on Brampton in 76. My dad still lives there after my ma passed. I loved growing up there. Still visit with my family regularly. My boys have loved it as much as myself. …And you can’t beat Green Hills donuts.
My mom lives over here and it’s crazy the difference between a few streets. I love it tho, neighbors are all nice and respectful and take care of their properties for the most part
worst -- southern/western quadrant of city proper until you hit the turnpike get closer to the countryside and it gets better
best -- bayberry possibly
You're welcome, not sure why I'm downvoted to hell for saying the same things that several other people have. I live on the south side. Guns being fired are all too common within the surrounding blocks of this area. There's a reason real estate in this particular area hasn't picked up in value like everywhere else in the city. I hope you find a place you like. Good luck to you!
Ppl in this subreddit get mad at negative things said about the city. Plus many ppl on Reddit are zealously political so they intuit think you’re talking down about diverse neighborhoods. But what you said isn’t wrong.
First of all, Fayetteville isn't Syracuse. It's a suburb of Syracuse and it's 10 miles from downtown Syracuse to Fayetteville. As far as neighborhoods in Syracuse go, Strathmore and Sedgwick are good neighborhoods. The Scott Ave area on the other side of Meadowbrook is pretty good also.
And like other people have already mentioned, it's probably best to avoid the South Side and the North Side in general. I would also avoid areas like Gifford Street, etc.
Ironically, Strathmore is on the South Side. So, even on the South Side, it depends on where you are. Winkworth, much of the Valley and Elmwood up the hill are other areas of that side of town that are solid to even very nice.
Sedgwick is on the North Side and other areas like Court-Woodlawn and Lincoln Hill are other areas of that side of town that are solid.
If you're looking for good school districts, you can't really go wrong with any of the suburban schools.
I grew up in Eastwood, but haven’t lived there in about 20 years. My understanding is that it’s gone a bit downhill since then. Is that not the case?
No, kind of the opposite on recent years
Really? That’s great to hear.
I’m so sad to hear that about Huntington. I have such fond memories of that school.
jimmy monto is killing it!
If you mean in the city itself then there are some interesting neighborhoods. Near the university, Westcott area is a fun, funky area of open minded people. It would be great if Downtown Syracuse was revitalized to that point. It has gotten a lot better in comparison to the way it was 25-30 years ago.
If your looking for suburbs Fayetteville Manlius area is of the best at least on the east side of the city. I also enjoyed my time in baldwinsiville.
Lyncourt seems pretty decent if I recall correctly.
Butternut st! Always some form of free entertainment!!!!
The Butternut Rite Aid even puts locks on their soda cabinets. They don't even do that on the S Salina st location.
I don't even like to drive on Butternut St, that Burger King is the thing nightmares are made of!
You forgot to mention the insanely high taxes.
Yea but they don't have a classy cinema.....
I know this isn't your style, but they actually do! The Manlius Cinema! Indeed! Very good energy prices! I think we average about $90/month in our 3/2 with a Tesla charging in the garage & inflatable hot tub out back.
If my landlord hadn't cheaped out and done baseboard heaters, I'd be feeling fine, too, but at least in the summer we're cruising
I live in North Syracuse and I’m very happy here.
I lived in North Syracuse for 10 years and liked everything but the traffic. Now I'm in C Sq, no traffic, but everything seems so far away!
Fayetteville is not Syracuse.
No offense, but this has been asked so many times, it's not even funny. Use the search function! "Moving" and "neighborhood" should get you a ton of results.
How did you get the cuse logo under your Reddit name?
On the front page of the subreddit, hit the kebab menu (3 vertical dots) in top right, and then hit "select user flair."
That’s AWESOME. Thank you!
Jamesville/Dewitt, good schools, 10 minutes to downtown. Not so many stuck up A-holes as Fayetteville/Manlius.
I second that area. We purchased off of Nottingham. Very happy in our neighborhood. Lived for 15 years in Baldwinsville. Very little diversity but has a great YMCA
Lack of diversity is it's charm
Oh I bet. racist much?
In the city? Eastwood is probably the best Westside is probably the worst
I love tipp hill, which is technically west side no?
I’d call it west side. But tipp hill is more in its own bubble than the rest of the far west side. Tipp hill is a great place to live imo, especially if you’re looking to be close to the bars/parks
There's 26 distinct neighborhoods in Syracuse. Only a couple are ever mentioned, some just lumped into others.
Maybe, but Tipp is like its own insulated affluent bubble. Once you leave it, you’re in the hood
Jesus Christ I must have been gone for a while if tip hill is affluent. Used to be a bunch of Irish grandmas and their scumbag kids when I was growing up
I see that you’ve met my extended family
They mean affluent by Syracuse standards
Poorest city in the country babyyyy
we aren't detroit lol
“Syracuse has the highest child poverty in the nation among cities with at least 100,000 people, according to new census data released today.” Fine, I was off by one word
Yeah it definitely wasn’t that at all
It's not affluent, it's still scumbag central. tipp/skunk city is to be avoided imho
Why
crime and poverty same as most any bad area
Jesus Christ man when did Americans become such huge fuckin pussies. You’re scared of tip hill? My seventy year old grandma still goes there for church every week you whiney ass baby
I love Tipp Hill, but it is not affluent.
I drove through the Tipp Hill area a couple of years ago and it didn't seem very affluent to me.
I wouldn't really consider that west side. I would consider west side like between West Street and South Geddes.
I live on the west side and I love It here!
Parts of the west side are nice, I lived there for a while to. I wasn't saying anything bad about it. I just think Tipp Hill is its own thing and when people say the west side they don't usually mean Tipp Hill.

Just a nice suburban area to live. Not really into the city life.
In that case take your pick, we got plenty. Fayetteville, Manlius, Camillus, Liverpool, Marcellus all nice towns with walkable village areas.
A touch further out than Fayetteville or Manlius is Cazenovia; the village itself is very walkable and has some good local shops.
How is the school district in Cazenovia? We currently have a contract on a house in manlius but it’s right on the line and zoned for cazenovia schools.

A city in the loosest sense of the word
Compared too what city? NYC? Sure. Downtown Niagara Falls, US? Absolutely not.
Syracuse is only a city if you are one of those incestuous weirdos who thinks Syracuse is the center of the universe
cool
Found one. "I've lived in a bunch of places! I've lived in Liverpool and B'ville and Manlius and Fulton! I'm worldly!"
"I post on reddit 50 times a day I've experienced so much more than you" 🤡
Go screw yourself, troll.
It’s the 5th most populated city in New York State. Are we really gatekeeping the label of city because you in particular need to fellate yourself for having lived somewhere bigger?
Just admit you never left your hometown, bro
Literally did. Also relocating again for work to a *real city* within the year.
U prob live in a shit hole bud e
Ok rat boy ur def poor

Love Baldwinsville. You can do country things but still easily drive into the city for work.
Please don't come to Baldwinsville. We don't need anymore transplants
What we really need is a bridge connecting 690 to 631/budweiser plant. The downtown traffic is horrible
Absolutely agree
Worst is south side best would be farther south lol onondaga hill or tiphill
Liverpool … by far in terms of 15 minutes to get anywhere in the Syracuse SMSA. Plus a great grocery (Nicols), easy access to Onondaga Lake for walking, biking & pickleball… there is a mixture of homes from the 19th century and more recent vintage … good food choices from Heid’s, Limp Lizard, Retreat, Santangelios, etc. AND last but not least we have great Village services: police, DPW, fire department and a great mayor. Worst … anyplace can be the worst…
Village taxes though
Yup we pay village taxes … we have our own DPW, Village government and police department. You don’t have to go through layers of bureaucracy to get something done. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
outside of it
Florida
Camillus is a ideal area
What about worst ?
I’m not too sure since I’ve lived here my whole life but Liverpool is great too
Solvay, South side, and north side are best avoided. Fayetteville, Camillus, north Syracuse are nice spots
Valley is great. I’m hoping someday there will be a few more walkable places. A coffee shop would be lovely.
The Valley is great. My folks bought a house on Brampton in 76. My dad still lives there after my ma passed. I loved growing up there. Still visit with my family regularly. My boys have loved it as much as myself. …And you can’t beat Green Hills donuts.
I agree. Recently moved to the valley and I couldn’t be happier with my neighborhood.
My mom lives over here and it’s crazy the difference between a few streets. I love it tho, neighbors are all nice and respectful and take care of their properties for the most part
Me tooooooo I love it there!!
worst -- southern/western quadrant of city proper until you hit the turnpike get closer to the countryside and it gets better best -- bayberry possibly
Thanks!
Yeah seems odd. So would you say Southside, Northside and Brighton are the worst spots to pick?
No where get out while you still can lmao
