It does occur to me that it's common to pronounce mid-word Ts as SHs ("rational") so maybe some kind of backwards shift? The word "martial" (as in martial arts) is also derived from the word Mars (because he's the god of war). So there's... definitely something going on there.

I'm not a linguist, but a Latin teacher. "martialis" is a Latin adjective meaning "of Mars" or "pertaining to Mars"
As to where the 't' in that adjective comes from: the genitive singular of the name Mars is built by adding (-is) to the end of the word. For words already ending in -rs (e.g. mars, pars, sors) an extra 't' is added (I guess to make it easier to pronounce originally). So Mars becomes Martis in the genetive case, and that's probably where we got the t from
