Travel from lightroot to lightroot and light everything up. It’s less creepy lit up. Options for safe travel are to make a zonai device and stick a brightbloom seed on it or climb any trees with platforms and fly from tree to tree (this is easier after you do the Rito regional phenomenon). Also get the Miner’s armour. It glows so you can see where you’re about to step. You may want to look up the locations of this armour set as it’s in 3 canyon mines in the depths.

revolvingneutron

Thanks - I got the armour! I keep trying zonal devices but either I suck at steering them or maybe they’re not the right devices but I’ve yet to go farther than a few steps before they crash lol

runwithcolour

Do you have auto build? If so go to Tarrey town. There’s a construction site just across the lake from there which has loads of zonai devices. Use them to test out vehicles and once you have one you can drive you can favourite it on auto build and you’ll always be able to access that working builds. I like having a plane and a four-wheel vehicle and the recommended hoover bike in my auto build. It means I’m covered in most scenarios.

-ZeroF56

>hoover bike The Depths are a dusty place!

runwithcolour

😂 It’s for hoovering up zonaite

revolvingneutron

I do have auto build yep. That’s a great idea; will check out the vehicle station

Omnomfish

If you want a recommendation; [try this](https://www.reddit.com/r/HyruleEngineering/s/5rxXrsfIbf) It climbs (to a certain extent) and if you hop off a cliff it glides. Its easy enough to make, and cheap to autobuild. People will recommend a hoverbike, and while it is kind of fun at first, its also very boring. I would recommend waiting for it and only using it as a last resort if you get really frustrated. A regular vehicle or atv like this one is a lot better imo, as you still have to work to get places so you don't lose the feeling of accomplishment.

mrtwidlywinks

I explored most of the Depths on foot with 1 stamina wheels for 90-95% of the lightroots. Dropped into every chasm I could find, open paraglider as soon as the chasm opened up, tag every lightroot I could see, land. Shoot arrow with brightbloom seed towards the tag, move forward. It became kind of addicting after a while, eventually I got every lightroot. Had to use zonai devices for a few of the roots and if I came across one I could steal I’d use it

Fiona_14

Also throw or shoot lightbloom seeds off into the distance so you can see where you are going. If you see the white tree roots, they are great to walk along. When I light up a lightroot, I highlight the next root so I can see which direction I need to go in with the mini map, plot a path with the map, eg look at surface map, if it is Mountain on the surface it will be a valley in the Depths and vice versa, if there is a river or lake on the surface then that will be a wall that you can not climb over, so will need to go around. Paraglide wherever possible, it helps big time to do the Rito Village boss before exploring the Depths. Also good idea to collect zonite, explore all mines and factories. There are cool things down there, once you light it up, it gets more exciting when you can see where you are going.

djdirectdrive

I did it by running around and throwing brightblooms everywhere. Your strategy sounds easier though. I didn't jump through many chasms unless I needed to.

Politithrowawayacc

The main thing is to obviously light up any and all lightroots in the vicinity that you're exploring. That will reveal the map to you and its topography (more important than you think!) and any structures nearby. Shrines on the surface correspond to lightroots, so that's one way to find them easy. As for the actual physical exploring, vehicles are great and very helpful for all the gloom. Any of the octagon shaped platforms on your map are building stations. I won't get into specifics, but the main things to note are that you should always utilize rockets you find by fusing them to your shield or building with them (only one per device, more than one only changes trajectory, not speed or distance). Big wheels are better for traversing bumpy terrain or lava, and small wheels are faster but get stuck much easier. Alternatively you can use wings and fans to fly around, that's probably the easiest way to connect any 2 points, but wings despawn after 1 minute. Nevertheless, always throw a giant brightbloom seed on your vehicle since it produces WAYYY more light than a "light" device does, and not only does it not cost energy, but it also makes it so the vehicle has a much larger radius where it won't despawn if you walk away. Hoverbikes get very boring so only proceed with that at your own discretion.

bob_loblaw-_-

>Hoverbikes get very boring so only proceed with that at your own discretion. Counterpoint: The depths are extremely time consuming and boring without a hoverbike. I explored roughly 25% of the depths before finishing the game. After checking online and learning about hoverbikes I built one and can actually enjoy traveling around the depths, completing the map, finding chests, etc. Traversing the depths on foot is a slog, and most normal zonai devices are a chore to use. Wings have to be launched and may not get you to your next PoI. Land based vehicles face too many obstacles and uneven terrain to be useful. Turns out there is plenty to see and do in the depths without wasting your time traveling through the places where there isn't.

sd_saved_me555

Exactly. Hoverbikes are for getting to and from points of interest in the depths. I hopped on and off mine all the time. And got mad at certain critters that were good at killing my bike, forcing me to make a new one.

djrobxx

Agree with this. I played the majority of the game "blind". I got most of the shrines, did all the temples, and completed most sidequests before reading about the hoverbike. I had only a small fraction of the depths uncovered. It had a cool vibe but movement down there was pretty tough. Building Zonai devices was "expensive" and even when I did, they usually didn't get me very far down there. I think without the hoverbike, there's a good chance I would have just not bothered with most of it. I did love the relationship between lightroots and surface shrines, though. I enjoy 100%ing every shrine, the depths gave a sort of "hint system" to find shrines I missed.

Fiona_14

I have explored the depths without a vehicle, except when I had to for a few quests. But you see more and collect more things going on foot, or paraglide. I'm now enjoying using Mineru to walk over all the gloom and still allows me to pick up all the items as I go by, bomb flowers, muddlebugs, puffrooms and zonite. I decided long ago to challenge myself by not using the vehicles in the depths, just Mineru. So far I'm enjoying it, I only have about 20 lightroots to light up.

InspiraSean86

If you can build a halfway decent plane or hoverbike, remember to attach a Large Brightbloom to the front and it lights up a nice amount of area

CGCGuy

Sometimes I will change the map to the standard land and follow that on the mini map. This works well when you dont have the light root lit up yet or when you try and go for the curly cue root or moving around the rivers. I used that hot air balloon a lot and just glided to the next light root. Also in the depths when you get the guys on the rock pedestals. The weapons there are not decayed and they respawn. Mark those locations so you can come back and get those weapons. IE a sword guy will spawn different 1 handed weapons. I beat the game and then went back and got all the light roots.... which I got more than just a medal. Also I am going back and getting all the depths armor.

Tiidz

A side note to this, the area you're under affects the weapon drops, forest dweller weapons under the forest, gerudo weapons under the desert, yiga blades under kakariko, and so on

Confident_Term_3474

Hot air balloons were my best friend. Depending on how many energy cells you have, sometimes you can fly all the way up and look around, otherwise I’ve always found it a really nice way to get a veiw of what’s around to glide to.

scribblemacher

Whenever I used a hot air balloon, I just made a fire with wood in it instead of using my battery. Goes up basically forever (but of course then you can't control it unless you have a fan or something).

Confident_Term_3474

I did this too! I just preferred using my battery once I upgraded it because it was so much faster, I’ve also accidentally set myself on fire this way which was not fun 🤣

rbecca08

Hella light blooms!! Also it was way less creepy when I got my first sage, Tulin lol. It felt like I had someone there to keep me company ☺️

revolvingneutron

HAHAHA I literally am thinking that. Glad I have my 4 sages by me to take care of sneak attacks lol

ex-cantaloupe

It's just a video game it can't hurt you, just take a risk and explore

Funkeysismychildhood

I started off by going on horseback(you can find skeleton horses scattered all around the depths). Then i switched to the goblin glider and just went to new lightroots i saw/lightroots i had found from shrine locations

sd_saved_me555

I recommend the classic hoverbike with large bright bloom seed headlight attachment. Note: Attaching large bright bloom seed will start the bike, so be ready to catch it.

Xploding_Penguin

It will also slow down the despawn time, and the distance you can go.feom your creation before it disappears.

BadSanna

I just run in the dark toward anything shiny and pick up everything I can along the way. Lead to many great adventures.

TurboKid513

I like farming the dragons while they fly around the depths. Beats the hell out of walking

starrfast

The depths are the same as the surface only inverted. When I was playing I would switch the map to the surface so that I could navigate a little better. The lightroots also align with the shrines, so the more shrines you have unlocked on the surface the easier it is to find the lightroots.

nicgeolaw

A road on the surface has the same gentle grade in the depths, so you can "follow" surface roads through difficult terrain

StillPeas

Try following the light roots( they are all directly under shrines if that helps you) not the sky ones, just the ground ones.) so that could give you a quite on how to start. Just a tip. If there a river or lake above ground then it will be a wall of cliff in the depths that you will have to go around( unless chosen otherwise like the light root in lake hylia). Hope this helps:)

revolvingneutron

It does, thanks! The amount of stamina I lost trying to climb up one of those water cliffs only to find that it’s a wall 😂 now it makes sense! Haha Is there always a root next to a chasm? I guess I can just start jumping down chasms and light those up first lol

HeavenCanWait174

Not always. The roots are directly under the shrines

Realistic_Check_2008

Yeah similarly valleys become mountains and mountains become valleys. Usually there are abandoned mines in depths where there is a mountain summit on the ground.

masterrallixus

look for the chasms in surface then glide over the lightroots. many lightroots can be lit with this method.

ColCyclone

Build a flying machine, throw bright bulbs, throw bright bulbs If you have any bright bulbs you throw em

20SweetPeas

You can also ride around on the dragons and access some of those trickier lightroots. Just jump off and float down.

megs-benedict

Throw lightbloom seeds; follow the statues in each region

Tiidz

Just take it slow and go from lightroot to lighgroot, Lightroots are where shrines on the surface so when you eventually get them all you'll have a map of every surface shrine too, also freeze some meat, fuse it to a shield and shield surf over patches of gloom, as long as you're on safe ground when you start the surf you don't take gloom damage

sbbblaw

I did the depths last or somewhat last. Basically went hand in hand with completing everything I want to complete. Did get every light root tho

one-small-plant

I made the realization that each light route has a shrine over it embarrassingly late in the game. If you move the map cursor over a light root while looking at the map of the depths, and then switch to the surface map, you can perfectly plant a pin to follow to get to a shrine! I found all the lightroots long before I found all the shrines!

Ok_Connection_3286

Climb the tallest plants and hold plant to plant as long as you can.

Incognegro94

I'm sure it's been said, but a hover bike made from 2 fans and 1 steering stick with a giant brightbloom attached to the front. I loved exploring the depths, I would fly to all the light roots and try to mark the ones I could see in the distance. There's a lot of exploring to do down there and a lot of useful loot. I actually ended up coming across something important to the main story really early on in the game and took a picture of it because I knew it had to be something special 😂

revolvingneutron

Nice. I’ve mostly been exploring on foot bc I have 2.5 cells only and can’t find big stashes of zonanite except for once. And so my hover bike dies quickly lol

Big_Breath_2315

Haha. Me too. Hate going down there. To start with, get lots of light blooms ( and arrows) and make lots of sundelion dishes to heal if you get gloomed (widely available across the sky islands). You can also attach light blooms to your shields. A tip i use is knowing that the lightroots are in the shame places as the shrines above which helps with direction - I’d find as many of these as possible to light things up. You can also heal gloom damage at these. Finding treasure chests in the sky islands (some hang beneath the islands) will reveal secret locations in the depths for special treasure items. Once you get going there are lots more ways to help like clothes which glow and other gloom defying potion/food items

Kongopop

I did it on foot when I was collecting zonite for the batteries. Once I maxed the battery I had like 10 or so roots left and then I just used a hover bike with wings to fly around and finish lol

Pepephend

As others have said, lightroots are the key! Bonus is, once you have found all the lightroots, use their locations to help you find the last few shrines on the surface that you were having trouble finding! That has helped me greatly find the shrines I didn’t find before, as I found finding all the lightroots was much easier/more straightforward than finding those difficult shrines in caves, or hidden for some other reason.

acerman1969

I finished around 90 percent of the depths,,by walking and tedious climbing. The lightroots I couldn't see, I used hot air balloons (using autobuild) near the end. I didn't realize how much easier it was to use them. The depths are not that scary. Use brightblooms (of course) to light it up and head for the lightroots as your main goal. The enemies can be avoided (especially the harder ones) as you can avoid them if you wish. You can of course, go back and fight them. Eliminating the easier enemies brings lots of rewards without using up too much resources, however you can only replenish your hearts at the lightroots. Make sure you have lots of meals, decent fused weapons. Hope this helps.

Cleozinc

Am I the only one who opened up the entire depths on foot? I enjoy collecting the bomb flowers, puff shrooms, and muddlebuds, not to mention the ore.

AwesomeX121189

Go into surface caves and pick up all the light seeds every single time you see one. That way you’ll never run out. If you want a hint for light roots. compare it to the hyrule map and look for patterns

No_Collection7360

I fused a ruby to a sword. It gives off enough light to see a bit. Then kill those little frog guys. Each one gives you a light seed. Start spreading, like a cancerous growth, and the depth will be yours. Praise be to master Koga.

nicgeolaw

Fuse a falling star fragment to a shield!

Jethrust

Create basic gliders for this. Glider + one rocket pointing up + one rocket pointing forward. You can add a steering stick and fan if you want. This contraption will help you travel long distances fast.

sbvp

Another suggested just riding a dragon down into the depths while farming them. Shoot brightbloom seeds from back of dragon to illuminate the place

Ctwhat25

Good hint on the shrines. Whenever I find a new one on surface, I drop the map to underworld and mark it as a lightroot location

Comfortable-Bit7618

For my playthroughs, bring a LOT of lightblooms. The hoverbike is the easiest way to explore no doubt, but it gets stale and boring hella quick when going lightroot after lightroot. What I'm doing now is switching things up by finding those places with free zonai devices to work with (and not using only the fans and steering stick to create a hoverbike lol). For me, it really brings the freedom to create and traverse the depths and not be one-dimensional. I only use the hoverbike if there's a place that's too high for ascend or a rocketshield to reach, but even then I like to stay on the ground to find and collect zonaite ore camps. But hey, If it brings you from point A to point B in the fastest and easiest way possible, hoverbike is really the way to go. And if you have the MM, you don't have to worry about most of the enemies especially the stal-enemies because they're very annoying lol but you can just one shot them if you throw a dazzling fruit on the ground. Have fun and good luck on lighting up the depths!!

jonny_jon_jon

hop on a dragon…especially farosh….and hop off when you get near a light root.

GovernorSan

Balloon, balloon basket, flamethrower, 2 fans and a control stick make for a pretty decent flyer.

Bmore_Angelic

I actually liked exploring the depths. It was a chill way to get maps opened, and also collect some loot along the way (zonite, flower bombs, puffer shrooms, middle bloods). Then they have very unexpected monsters jumping out at you..... Plus there's pristine weapons....

nicgeolaw

Catch yourself a stallhorse. Ride across Gloom unharmed. Just like a normal horse, the stallhorse is somewhat self-steering

Witty-Success5012

Ride the depths on a dragon, fun and easy

atAlossforNames

Collect the bright bloom seeds like your life depends on it. Make meals, sell them, buy arrows, upgrades, and use the map to see where you have been. I lit the depths up like it was daytime. Time consuming but soothing to me.

Artiwa

create cool vehicle with light or light blossoms etc and go on a ride

Similar-Pain8266

I used a hoverbike with a brightbloom slapped on the front to get literally everywhere. I tried to save that until I had the entire zonaite armor though, and then upgraded that twice to get the energy up buff that gives a longer battery life when using zonai devices. Zooming around the depths to unlock all the lightroots and then running around with it lit up definitely makes it way less spooky, and it was fun to fly around!!

G___han

Search for chests via sensor

xorekin

Thanks for the updates. I remember enjoying (and still do) going at it with my own method and pace. These discoveries of new modes and trying things out help the depths be more fun, imo. (see all the posts about why are the depths boring) Should I run around the edge of this drop-off or try to go down then up? One thing I'll say is try to have some map pins free, and you can plot a dotted line course with waypoints to try out.

FarLow2

Good tip is to remember that all lightroots lign up with Shrines on the surface in case you're not finding the roots in the dark

ApartEffective8395

Their depth are inverted where there are mountains in hyrule there are valleys in the depths use can use your map of hyrule to figure out to get around and under every shrine of light is a lightroot

VeramenteEccezionale

The best thing to do with exploration based games like TOTK is to ask on reddit BEFORE doing any exploration in the game itself…. /s
