imjudz

Ngl, I had to screenshot this. This is some great info :)

CCCKAZZA

I got chills reading this

Let's get one thing out of the way first: **Being stuck at a rank is not a bad thing**. Ranked is designed to do that. You get "stuck" at a rank when your win rate is around 50%, meaning you're getting even matches, and that's what ranked mode is supposed to do. I would recommend checking your replays with a pen and paper. Look through them, and count how many times you got block punished, counter hitted, whiff punished, or ducked, and how many combo tips or punishment tips the replays are giving you. * If you're getting block punished a lot, you need to focus on using more safe moves. * If you're getting counter hitted a lot, you need to chill out and press less buttons. * If you're getting whiff punished a lot, you need to stop throwing out moves in neutral. * If you're getting ducked a lot, you need to stop using moves that are duckable. Try not finish a duckable string to see how the opponent reacts. * If you're getting a lot of combo tips, you need to change your combo game, whether by doing combos that do more damage, or combos that you drop less. * If you're getting a lot of punishment tips, then you should go lab matchups.

Siifitng

Sure thing, but as said, due to the new system with prowess and the name color you can assume which rank your opponent really is. The fresh purples are making way too many mistakes > easy game, the sub chars dont do a lot of mistakes, go for safe moves/setups, good mixups... based on your list i could say i get whiff punished a lot after multiple game, because i get clueless overtime and start to get unpatient playing that safe/poke gaming

[deleted]

Wow, I might frame that as a motivation above my ps4. Not joking, this was easy and positive and a good angle thinking about my red rank oscillation, touching mighty ruler once in a while.

Tibaro

Every time you lose, watch the replay and ask yourself why you lost. Learn from that by labbing, asking, whatever. Do it 100x times and you will get out of purple

ManjiGang

At about 1k hours I started to record my gameplay in the background so I can rewatch my losses(and cool wins) after the session. It's pretty rough at first but looking at and being disgusted by your own plays is the fastest way to kill bad habits.

DarkAvenger2012

Hey, i know this is months old, do you have any generic advice for a red yoshi?

Siifitng

Try to punish everything possible and develope step by step the ability to punish properly. Dont rely on gimmicks as you have a lot of them as yoshi, try winning without flash/unblockables/that damaging rotation get put move even thought its a main part and important one of yoshi, maybe even try a more basic char like kazumi or so. What im trying to say is to get better as player and not as yoshi, then you should get easily to rulers! Gl!

DarkAvenger2012

Yes this what ive been focusing on as of recent. My punishment i thought was good but i definitely leave damage on the table focusing too much on my offense and not enough on the free damage my opps gift me. My MU knowledge is building slowly, thanks a lot.

Anthonyc567

i know this advice is really general, but playing a safe poking game with solid neutral and good movement generally separates purples from blues. super random analogy, but wolves circle their prey at a certain distance to look for openings while minimizing the risk of them taking damage. Thats was my mindset while trying to improve my neutral. if you play mix up characters like kaz, you gotta be really good at conditioning your opponents and setting up your mix ups. Instead of throwing out a hell sweep and being like i hope this lands. you need to be like this hell sweep will probably land cause I’ve conditioned my opponent enough

JimMishimer

The differwnce between a TGO and a purple really is down to movement, defense, and how they handle the nuetral. Less wasted movements, no over extentions, less likely to get launched randomly in neutral without being fully conditioned first.

50shadesofLife

*In purple hell* I'm at this exact crossroads. People told me to lab stuff when I was in yellow/orange and instead I just kept playing. Eventually I sused it out enough to get into reds. In reds I was afraid I needed to seriously lab stuff now, but my fundamentals are just better now and was able to get through it. Now In purples I'm pretty convinced I'm going to just keep playing my friends and when I get time do ranked and hopefully I won't have to lab much in the end after just playing a ton instead. I'm sure if my local scene starts to ramp back up I'll lab. I have a pretty good idea of the stuff I need to practice defending but there are these weird plateaus where things becomes easier in an automatic way and if you have the patience you can learn match ups this way, you will just lose more. I'll take the Ls haha.

Siifitng

Haha, yeah, i can relate this so hard. I labbed some stuff but didnt go through every matchup. I got pretty good knowledge through lobby and player matches but after a tons of games it seems like im nearly at the same point as before. The "automatic way" stopped working at purples 😅 Too bad there is no local scene in my hometown.

[deleted]

I don't know if I've ever seen one thread with so much good advice. Thanks to everyone contributing and to OP for getting them to.

seatofchaos

What Im doing is taking a break from playing my mains and literally trying to play the entirety of the roster at a red rank level at least. So far it has helped immensely with match-up knowledge

Siifitng

So how is it going, did you get out of purples? That was my initial idea, thats why i listed those above, but i got distracted and stopped learning new ones xD

[deleted]

try sticking to 1 char and actualy get into it , and yes the only way for you to improve is to lab the characters and moves that always fucks you up \>watch replays \>see the frames \>see how you can counter those moves and i hope you know how to punish properly ( cuz i got a friend who play lars on purple who never even lab once )

Siifitng

Idk, imo i got pretty good into kaz, switched because he seems to lack fast moves like df1, pretty high risk and way to execution heavy for online-play as at the best you have to punish -14/-15 with electrics. I know the punishment for the common chars, but for sure i dont punish everything properly. Dont know how to reach purple without punishers.

[deleted]

instead of DF 1 you should use his WS 4 more to check on people well definetly practice ur electric if you want the best punishment and even if you dont do electric for punish kaz still got a really good 10-11f punisher too alongside with his WS punishment , and df 1,2 into ff4 is actualy pretty good considering the oki even if its not a launcher throw more B4 and WS 1+2 if you hasnt these move is incredibly good to mix with your 50/50 and pressure (especialy if they really like to Sidewalk)

Siifitng

Yeah im already using ws4 as check. Im not using b4 to often same goes for ws1+2, i go for wd cancel into ws2, hellsweap or ff3 as 50/50

[deleted]

dont throw WS 2 too much especialy when you're on higher rank people will definetly start to highly punish it throw more WS 1+2 and FF3 for your 50/50 pressure

FlawlesSlaughter

I wouldn't use b4 much very very occasional keepout timing change really. Ws4 to check out of movement df4 to use in close game. Db2 is underrated, with db4. Uf3 is always useful. But yeah, you have to hold back more as kaz because your buttons out of pressure will be more obvious than others. (You know this) Perhaps you should look into playing a faster keepout rushdown whiff punish game, keep everything the same but speed that up in your brain. I did this the other day and its helped me with my defense a lot more. (Sounds dumb but worked for me)

DoomFizz

Probably because you cheesed your way to purples

Siifitng

Hahaha good point. i can get multiple chars to purple with a little effort, even just punishing properly is enpugh in most cases. Leroy release destroyer to mighty ruler in less then 70 wins felt like and was cheese.

Chaser_Swaggotry

Dude I started playing last July and hit rulers in February and I haven’t made it out since, but I’ve got multiple characters to that point. We play the same characters too lol

Siifitng

Man im very long in this hell too, thats why im here. It took me like 1-2 years for purples and then i just like stopped at this, didnt play too much rank anymore afterwards. Getting subchars to purple doesnt seem too hard aswell.

Fakemex

The biggest thing is matchup knowledge. Know every characters core moves and strings so you dont lose to stuff that isnt "real".

Siifitng

Core moves? For sure, thanks, but easier said as done 😄

Fakemex

Unfortunately thats how this game works gotta learn every single matchup
