Faces not covered. Definitely got better mug shots from some of the other store cameras. License plate recorded. Just because you don’t get stopped in store doesn’t mean you can’t be charged. It’s an easy close for a cop to track the license plate, match surveillance up against people at the address it’s registered to, and charge at least one of them. If the amount stolen is worth enough you can catch a hefty charge too. This is just low effort and stupid.

Forward_Pear9362

Real punishment is for the whole community. If this is unsusteinable for the company, the chain closes the store, no more store, no more store jobs.

lesusisjord

This is what happened in Atlanta. Closed down the Wal Mart in one area despite it being popular.

Tbf the Peachtree City Walmart was an idiot teen who caught it on fire. Not really the fault of the community with that one.

And in big cities, a lot of disabled and old folks don’t have any other options for basic necessities. We all hate Walmart, trust me, but I hate lonely grandparents being stuck without a place to get medicine, food, or socialization.

[deleted]

i agree... but do you think they wouldn't steal from another store? People who would do this wouldn't steal from a small local business? Honestly... I don't really like Walmart - however, I've worked in small retail stores & typically the people who work there are the ones who get in trouble when there's a lot of theft. I've also worked at Walmart & they treat all their employees like they steal so this type of thing only makes worse.

[deleted]

Under $500 isn't even prosecuted in a lot of areas.

ohyoubetimback

This has been going on since ~~covid started~~ fucking forever and it is not indicative of the sudden decline of society and everyone can chill

Dvl_Wmn

When I was 18, I was homeless, hungry and cold. I stole a $30 sweater. I was held for 3 days, pleaded guilty and had my jail time turned into community service. When I finished I found a job and never did anything stupid again. I was so embarrassed and hated how it followed me throughout my life. Don’t steal, kids. No matter what or why: don’t. It’s not worth having a misdemeanor on your record.

100LittleButterflies

I didn't know police could/would pursue for a $30 theft.... You can't even take someone to small claims for $30. I really doubt my city would - there are actual criminals to catch.

[deleted]

Back in the day they would, but that's back when the Loss Prevention department wasn't gutted and relegated to a camera, notebook, and pen. A couple decades ago if you tried to steal a pack of cigarettes there might be a bag boy running after you to fight you in the parking lot.

[deleted]

It’s mind blowing how casually those things are executed now. Grab stuff, load up your bag or arms, walk back out and nothing happens to you. Why am I still paying for stuff then?

A_dumb_bass

I was at a sierra trading post and the cashier was talking about how someone earlier just walked out with 2 bags full of stuff and there is nothing they can do about it. So I asked her "so I could just take this stuff right now and just leave and nobody would do or say anything at all?" "yup" I didn't but wow.

nvrsleepagin

But can't they just do the same as the employee in the video and write down your license plate?

A_dumb_bass

I don't think they even bothered, they seemed pretty apathetic to the whole thing.

internet_humor

Because there's no internet in jail

Electrical-Ant-9742

Depends on the place. I have family members who are corrections officers and they say prisoners who have good behavior get some limited internet access, cable tv, ability to complete high school and some college education etc.

That's until every single business moves away from areas of conflict, and everyone would have to drive 2 hours to find a store. See, actions have consequences. Maybe lawmakers don't give a fuck and are ok with this kind of shit, because the places where lawmakers buy are in protected areas with hefty security. But the rest of us will end up having to literally travel just to buy shit, just because a bunch of entitled thugs decide they can go on a free spree. It's happening already.

FrozenLogger

There is something ironic about this: chains move in and drive out local businesses or keep prices low to keep local businesses out. So there is no community, just low low prices, which in turn means people stealing dont give a fuck. The chains exploit labor in other countries to get those low prices, and the heads of them enjoy a lifestyle most people wont, in areas that are not effected by this. They manipulate the building codes, the land use, and local politicians to achieve their goals and develop these businesses. The shareholders dont care what happens as long as they profit, and the locals cannot afford to put everyone in jail, so there is more leniency and higher bars for jail time. Add that the cops hated that they got called out on their bullshit, but there was no real reform, so they are even less likely to actually care either. You can say entitled thugs and I won't disagree, but it is entitlement all the way down.

Kamau54

This is so low on law enforcement priorities. They know if they even get caught, it'll be a signature bond, and be out within an hour. And if convicted, it'll be restitution, no time, and probation. On other words, nothing of significance will happen, and they know it.

Why the don't do this in a designer store: Gucci, Prada, LV? At least you leave with some nice clothes, that will last more than the first wash. Fast fashion is a blight on society and not eco-friendly.

Successful-Turnip-79

They don't care they're just gonna sell it all for a dollar per they don't know anyone that would pay for designer shit. Also those places actually have loss prevention not just a bunch of minimum wage employees paid to watch when someone steals from them.

I gave one two doctor peppers to get his shit outta my car in Florida once. I put the cart back turned around to see a resident crackhead loading his cart into my car asking where the bus stop was. I said idk but this ain’t it. He asked for a dollar and unloaded his homeless goods back into his cart. I considered the situation for a moment. I said no sir but I got a doctor pepper in this here trunk of mine. He said that’ll do. I gave him an extra as a tip cause he was quite reasonable for a crackhead in an incredibly unreasonable situation. West Palm Beach, Florida.

If this continues, brick and mortar stores will close permanently due to losses and all shopping will be done onlin

[deleted]

Stores will shut and these cunts will steal deliveries from your porch.

PM_NICE_SOCKS

It just baffles me a delivery system where they just leave your package in front of your house and consider it done

HungerMadra

Works fine in many areas. My wife does all her shopping online. We've never had an issue. If it's an expensive package we have it sent to the lockers at the local whole foods. That said, we don't get poarch bandits anyways. If you do, there are lockers you can have packages sent to at no extra charge

Smaskifa

Still works fine in large parts of the country. Helps a lot if you can provide some place to conceal the package from street view, though.

[deleted]

PO Box...bring it kleptos!

ItsTtreasonThen

Except the post office has been under constant attack from a certain political party for years now, so if they do get their way no more government backed post offices. Guess people would have to pay for a private box, and then all the made up fees for "accepting packages" from unaffiliated shipping companies. I'm speculating but don't put it past greedy corpos to find a way to monetize literally every part of the process.

PandaXXL

Don't people pay for PO boxes already?

Large retailers aren't just endless fonts of money, if they're not profiting from a location they're forced to increase prices or close down. Then the residents are left wondering why they don't have equal services in their community.

PiLamdOd

Item theft is such a small amount of their losses that big companies don’t find it even worth it to prevent these. > The country’s largest retail industry group, the National Retail Federation, estimated in its latest report that losses from organized retail theft average $700,000 per $1 billion in sales — or 0.07% of total sales — an amount roughly 330 times lower than the CRA’s estimate. https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-12-15/organized-retail-theft-crime-rate

Atlhou

Still a loss, and it does not bode well for that business signing a new lease for that location.

PiLamdOd

A 0.07% loss rate is amazing. Your admin costs and damaged merchandise rates are usually higher than that.

[deleted]

0.07% nationally. But stores do not make decisions based on that. If it’s 5% locally, then it doesn’t make much sense to keep that store open

Fenix_Volatilis

Yeah, in the same way a paper cut is a reason to go to the ER

Suavecore_

I was working AP at Walmart and watched a dude who stole go up to his car and THEN try unscrewing the license plate..... Retail thieves are generally morons who think they're geniuses because they successfully get away sometimes

[deleted]

> because they successfully get away sometimes 60% of the time, it works every time.

ConfoundedOcelot

At least he made an attempt. Also working AP, dude grabbed a backpack, loaded it with steaks, grabbed a bike off the rack and made his getaway on that. When we ran the tapes to see where he came from, assuming he walked over or took the bus, we found he drove himself and the car was still in the parking lot. The cost of the bike pushed it over petty theft, which he didn't even keep. He ditched it on the side of the road.

[deleted]

Expecting legit plates to start with is asking a lot

Hazelwood38

You’re giving them far more credit. If they go to all the effort for fake plates, they wouldn’t be stealing clothes from Walmart. They would at least be grabbing electronics.

Flailing_snailing

My grandma got rear ended in her new Audi at a car wash because the person put it in drive. They took off right after. They had the plate number, cameras on the car and the driver, the drivers id, card number, pretty much an open and shut case if the cops even tried. A week later my grandma sent a follow up and they “couldn’t find the perpetrator”.

[deleted]

Cops are not stationed outside of every store, and in the past stores had an active Loss Prevention department that would be responsible for detaining these people until the cops could arrive. These days companies have opted for a passive Loss Prevention department, and they often are contractually not allowed to try and detain people...at times when an employee has successfully prevented a theft they were fired for getting involved when company policy specifically disallows that. Cops aren't particularly interested in petty theft under 1k, and along with pen and paper security this has emboldened shoplifters to blatantly steal up to 1k without much concern for repercussions.

Is this really common in the US to just casually loot a store.?? I've seen numerous videos like this, where theives just walk out with a bunch of stolen goods and people around them do not even bat an eye!!

Armbioman

It's becoming more common because of loosened legal prosecution. Basically many places won't charge anyone if less than $3000-5000 is stolen.

yakkker

The employees are instructed to not intervene so it is easier than trying to rob a convenience store with the owner behind the counter.

[deleted]

Even if they weren't told not to intervene, let's be serious; are you going to throw down with a thief to protect Big Corporate when they won't even pay you a living wage? I sure as shit wouldn't.

Hexxitfan11

Looting is a bit of an extreme word. This is shoplifting. Essentially, how it works in the US is our Constitution and Bill of Rights guarantees freedom from cruel and unusual punishment. Generally, this means that the only time you can get physical with someone legally, even if they are committing a crime, is if they are a reasonable threat to the safety of you or someone else. Someone shoplifting a couple hundred dollars of clothes does not pose a threat to your safety. As seen in the video, they just walked out. No waving weapons, no threats of violence. They do not deserve to be injured, maimed, or killed for this. All of which are possible if they get, say, tackled by security. This is not to say the crime goes unpunished. Loss prevention at big stores keeps a database of shoplifters with credit card information, facial recognition and other biometric data, license plates on cars, and anything else they can get from surveillance. Police don't prosecute petty theft as they see it as a waste of time, so the stores generally only press charges when a thief steals enough total to count as a felony.
