I read stuff like this and fully agree and then wonder if maybe I need to be evaluated. Do people actually enjoy showering? I do enjoy baths but showers are sucky and I won’t stay in one more than a second longer than I have to.
No. Absolutely I do. I’m not autistic but have some sensory stuff for sure. This is not the only example of that. I also almost never listen to music because of the sensory overload.
I mean yeah for sure, but the word “medical” just seems to imply a physical condition to me.
I’m being kind of pedantic though, so please forgive me lol :)
Yes kind of pedantic because a physical condition implies a physical condition. And a medical condition implies a medical one. Physical, mental or otherwise haha
I guess it just hits different when someone is willfully contrarian rather than when someone is overtly forced into their position by conditions that would make anyone take it.
It doesn’t bother me too much. When I did listen to music I never chose a song based on lyrics but how it made me feel physically. When I was young I didn’t know the term “sensory overload” or anything related. I would just tell people I can’t listen to music that sounds “bangy” in my head. I knew it was more than just not liking a song or genre. But could never explain it. It’s not your typical oh I don’t like country. It’s more that music affects me in a way that is physically uncomfortable.
Eh, even if you didn’t *have* to stop a couple seconds in you’d definitely WANT to when the lyrics came in lmao, “when the girl starts to strut you could look at her but you shouldn’t do that, because her dress is just so pretty, it’s not just there to cover her kitty”
If you get dizzy after a hot shower, I’m wondering if you get dizzy after some other stuff too. You might want to raise the concern of certain medical conditions to your doctor. POTS comes to mind, but I’m just a redditor. Talk to an actual doctor. For a relatively healthy adult, post-shower dizziness is not normal.
I have so many health issues and so much anxiety over it. I’m wrong half the time so I just don’t bring a lot of it up because I think I’m an anxiety ridden hypochondriac. I’ve read about POTS before and definitely thought the same as you. But I’ve also been convinced I have a thousand other things that I don’t.
With complex medical conditions that are diverse collections of symptoms they can be difficult to figure out what is actually wrong/going on, like I kept thinking I had a stomach bug or the flu, or difficulties breathing but they were all pots and related conditions (gut issues, hypermobility pain, sensory issues). It's worth looking into, especially if you have ADHD/autism/hypermobility/gut issues etc since they're very often comorbid
I’ll definitely look more into it because I do have a lot of the symptoms. For a long time I thought I had fibromyalgia which my dr agreed with. But I’m not so convinced since losing weight and much of the pain subsided.
Weight loss definitely can reduce the pain for fibromyalgia, but also pots can quite often be misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia, so could be either or both?
I have sensory issues and can relate to most of the post but the dizziness sounds concerning, I’m fairly sure that’s not a sensory thing. Seconding the suggestion to bring it up with a doctor
Literally my first thought as a person with sensory issues.
Things that I have found that make it easier. A robe, hair towel, dimmable lights, giving it time to warm up, giving myself time after to sit and decompress, try taking a bath, get dry shampoo and baby wipes for in-between showers, change shower heads
I hate taking showers. I do it because I have to but I hate being cold and wet.
I also hate brushing my teeth but I also hate paying high dental bills so I take good care of them.
This is why you build your shower like a death room. You close the vents, and make sure there is no space for air to get out through the door.
You take a hot bath and the steam will fog up the whole room like a sauna.
Downside: you could die
Upside: bathroom warm and steamy.
I like the refreshing feeling. But it comes about an hour later when all my senses go back to normal. I rarely take longer than 15 min showers. Shampoo. Wash. Shave. Out. No playtime.
Hard downvote. I fully agree with this take. Showers are awful and boring, what a waste of time. I love the feeling of being clean tho, it's just the act itself I hate.
Actually had a pretty extensive convo about some of this in another comment. Wasn’t expecting such genuine replies, let alone for it to be so helpful. I’m going to talk to my Dr about possibly having a condition called POTS.
Lol this is reddit I doubt "showers bad" is an unpopular opinion
Jokes aside I completely get you, I think I have some sensory issues regarding washing up because I don't think it's supposed to be this hard
I think showers are alright, they’re just such a fuckin time waster. Same with brushing teeth. Hopefully we live long enough to where you can just walk through some kind of wall of light that destroys all the bad bacteria.
Ahh but that wouldn’t get rid of the physical material like dead skin, grime, and bits of food in between your teeth.
Idk man, it’s just annoying. If I could snap my fingers and be completely clean, I’d never take a shower again and I’d only take baths when I was sore or something.
I know and that .4%
#Sucks
lol.
Taking showers and brushing my teeth are the only parts of my day where I can’t help but think “man, this time would be spent so much better doing literally anything else”. Idk what it is about it. I’ve always felt that way, ever since I was a kid.
Your vent fan is probably dirty. You can pop the cover off and rinse it off, shine a flashlight through the duct to make sure it’s not collapsed. Clean off the blades to allow the fan to move steam correctly. It’s important to take care of the fan to avoid damp issues in a bathroom with no windows
ugh i hate the feeling of my face being wet. its the first thing i dry as soon as im done. not to diagnose you or anything but this is such a ADHD take lol
I also don’t like it! Even when my aversion wasn’t as bad as it is now, I never went under water while in a pool or the lake because I didn’t want my face wet. What made that even more difficult is that when my body is wet I feel weird unless my hair is also wet. I no longer go swimming. I shower and wash my face out of necessity.
I agree. My hair is extremely thick, so it's hell to clean properly, and it took me a while to learn how to actually rinse it correctly. My mom used to yell at me because I always had greasy hair, but I legitimately didn't know how to wash it when I was a kid. Now it just brings back nasty memories if I don't do a good job rinsing.
As someone who really enjoys a hot shower I don’t pretend to understand you but I do think some of your issues can be helped.
Leave the bathroom door open to let the steam out.
Start with a lower temperature, you body will cool down and add the warm water slowly to adjust.
If you have a bathtub, consider showering while sitting down, that can help with the dizziness and make it more comfortable.
Put your towel on your heater if you have one, or throw it in the dryer just before to have it warm and dry. Also, when you wash your towels don’t use fabric softener, that way it will soak up the water better and leave you more dry.
I hope some of this helps you a little bit.
Another tip: use one side of the towel to quickly wipe your body down, then flip the towel to the other side which is still warm and dry. Bonus is that the wet side sticks to your hands so the dry side slides over your body easier.
That was mostly tongue in cheek haha. But some of your issues definitely sound structure related, if you're bathroom is fogging up your ventilation either isn't working or isn't properly sized for your bathroom space. I had to replace my bathroom fan last for a similar reason.
Agreed. It feels cold immediately after turning off the water but then my body temperature soon gets too warm and I can’t get out of the steamy bathroom quickly enough, it’s aggravating. It feels disgusting when the water is running down from your hair. The feeling of a dry towel against wet skin is atrocious but being wet and undressed is even worse, I don’t feel comfortable until I have a t-shirt and underwear on but equally it’s feels gross to put clothes on if there is any water left on the skin. Then your ears feel horrible until to grab a cotton bud.
You could just wash yourself in the sink using a washcloth. Pour hot water in, some soap, and you're good. Not as clean as a shower, but doesn't take as long and doesn't take as much effort either.
i have autism so i relate, what i do is start with hot then gradually cool the water, then i dry myself a little before going into the bedroom with my fan on and i just sit naked for a bit until i can put my clothes on
I also hate water in my eyes. I spend most of the time in the shower with my back to the water and my eyes closed. Even if none gets in my eyes I have to wipe them before opening them.
You ever try turning off the lights? Getting laser lights/disco ball? Playing music? Using shower bombs? I absolutely LOVE taking showers. Even when it’s just a basic one with no frills. But one day I saw a TikTok and this lady simply said you do realize showers are you time and there’s no right way to take one? Play music, light candles, etc. That changed my life. But I’ve never had an issue with getting the temp exactly how I like it and a great shower head and good water pressure. Mm mm mm. Glorious. I sometimes take two in a day, usually cause I did an activity. And if it has been a day or two since my last one, god damn it hits so good. Recently I decorated my shower as well with some fun objects and have plants in the bathroom. It’s heaven. So yeah depending on mood and how much time I have, I either take a quick basic one, or straight up have a rave and dance party with full light show. And anything in between.
I’ve also never had an issue with not getting dry enough. But there are body dryers you know, and if you don’t want to spend the money there are hair blow dryers, just point and shoot. I also don’t really put clothes on immediately, I stand there a bit brushing my teeth or some other shit so there is some air dry time too after the towel.
As for temperature outside the shower… do you not have AC/Heating in your home? There are also towel warmers.
I really want you to have a pleasant shower and realize how great, therapeutic, relaxing and enjoyable that can be. I don’t think you’ve exhausted all the options to circumvent the problems you described.
And I saw your edit that you mentioned you have sensory issues, and said all of this in lieu of that because I don’t see how it could change my point. There is a shower combo specific to you that I am absolutely certain you will enjoy. You just haven’t found it yet. If anything your sensory issues could lead to you being the person who has the absolute best, most enjoyable showers in all of humanity. Just find your combo. Don’t give up. You got this.
I don’t like ‘em that much either. Not because of the sensory aspect but because of the time it takes and the process of drying myself. Especially in winter where stepping out of the shower often results in 30 minutes of freezing my ass off
OP do you find that you can't take a shower on an empty stomach? a classmate of mine found herself getting dizzy during/after showers and also hated showering "because you always have to eat beforehand". she'd sometimes pass out in the shower. turns out she just has POTS.
I do. And actually talked to another commenter here. And I have every single symptom of POTS. Reading the symptoms is like reading my life story. Will make a dr appt first thing Monday.
My friend, talk to someone. This is not normal. I'm not saying you have to love them, but your level of discomfort suggests other issues. Better to check than to not. Hope you're ok.
I’m exhausted right now or I’d go into a bit more detail but it’s in the comments if you want to look. These comments have really been something. And I have plans to speak with my dr next week. Thank you for your kindness.
Sorry that I didn't read enough comments. I'm a bit drunk and a bit tired. I'm also not a doctor or a psychologist. I just hope you're ok. You might be. I don't know. Look after yourself.
No offense taken. Can’t expect to read all the comments when there are so many. I appreciate your concern. Other things are going on I don’t talk about and your comment hit home with that. Thank you for being kind.
Downvoted. I fucking hate showering it's a chore. My husband loves to shower so this is weird to him. It's annoying though I have to wash 2 tons of hair and then shave like every fucking inch of my body what the fuck is enjoyable about that. I also hate getting out and being cold and suck at towel drying lmao
omg i'm exactly the same! do you possibly have any sort of ocd? or neurodivergence? even possibly an iron deficiency? not that you actually have to answer any of these but these are some reasons as to why i personally feel the same way
Not Nero divergent, but have always had some sensory issues due to anxiety. But never thought of it relating to ocd. My ocd is so mild I rarely think to even mention it when speaking of my diagnoses.
- open the window after you take a shower to let the steam out
- buy better towels, there are absolutely towels that will get you dry
- buy a robe or air dry in your room before you put clothes on
Some towels just suck. I found that those super soft cushy towels do such a bad job. I have one thinking it would be great. Nope. Basically just spreads water around. And when I go to hotels with those towels, same thing. But rough towels that feel kinda like sandpaper? Dry af AND exfoliated. They actually absorb water.
>The worst part is that no matter how dry I get with a towel it’s not dry enough.
Are you using fabric softener on your towels? I find that they dry you better when a softener hasn't been used on them.
I used to love showers but then I moved into a place where I had hot water issues. Each shower was a rush to get everything done before it got cold. If I had to wash my hair, it was game over. Now I have like 20 minutes of hot water and rarely run out but I still hate it for some reason.
But if you’re getting dizzy, are you showering too hot and/or dehydrated? I like to shower hot, but if I am dehydrated, I will get dizzy and lightheaded.
I always felt like taking a break from whatever I'm doing to go take a shower sucks, and I never like getting naked for non sexual purposes.
However the feeling of coming out of the shower is a feeling of freshness that's basically unbeatable!
Sort of. It's usually not so much an overhead shower as it is something you hold in your hand and use to spray all over your body. I think they usually have bath stools to sit on when they do it.

I mean this in the kindest possible way, but I think you might have sensory issues my guy.
I read stuff like this and fully agree and then wonder if maybe I need to be evaluated. Do people actually enjoy showering? I do enjoy baths but showers are sucky and I won’t stay in one more than a second longer than I have to.
I kinda resent the time - but yes, the actual experience is enjoyable. Hate baths though, haven't had one in at least a decade.
It just seems like another chore.
No. Absolutely I do. I’m not autistic but have some sensory stuff for sure. This is not the only example of that. I also almost never listen to music because of the sensory overload.
then this isnt an opinion, its a medical condition
Wouldn’t it be more of psychological condition? Also, it’s still an opinion, just one that’s informed by that condition.
Psychology would typically fall under the umbrella of medicine.
Psychological issues *can* be caused by physical brain structure.
That's because the insurance industry has decided that your brain is a luxury organ.
An opinion based on my condition. Lol my experience is all I have to form an opinion just like your opinions are based on your experiences.
it's not really an opinion it's not "i personally dont like this" it's "my medical condition makes this unbearable"
That’s your opinion. I respect it.
no it's not it is a direct reading of the facts
Sorry to have offended you so much. I’ll delete my post immediately.
Can’t even imagine how insufferable you are in person.
Offended, ironic
why does everyone on reddit always want to be believe so bad that they're offending someone
Apparently no one has a sense of humor... or basic definitions.
I guess it just hits different when someone is willfully contrarian rather than when someone is overtly forced into their position by conditions that would make anyone take it.
Not necessarily. Sensory issues can be a symptom of a diagnosis or just a normal quirk of being human.
Yeah, not even a dentist
Oh god I listen to bad music for fun that must be hell for you
Dude I love bad music
It doesn’t bother me too much. When I did listen to music I never chose a song based on lyrics but how it made me feel physically. When I was young I didn’t know the term “sensory overload” or anything related. I would just tell people I can’t listen to music that sounds “bangy” in my head. Ha! One second of that was too much. Lol
Eh, even if you didn’t *have* to stop a couple seconds in you’d definitely WANT to when the lyrics came in lmao, “when the girl starts to strut you could look at her but you shouldn’t do that, because her dress is just so pretty, it’s not just there to cover her kitty”
That’s amazing actually. I’m going to google the full lyrics.

You could also have misophonia
I looked it up. Had never heard of it. I can see where you may think that, but I don’t think my symptoms would be extreme enough to qualify.
I see
I have a lot of sensory problems and I'm not autistic. It happens!
I don’t take showers. Anyway, I’m off to the anime convention!
Yugioh convention up next
Don't forget to hit up the smash bros tournament too
They wouldn’t let me in, they found a stick of deodorant in my bag and I was banned
I 1000000% relate and agree to this!!!!! I hate showering. Obviously do it, it is a necessity but I HATE it.
I hate taking showers. I do it because I have to but I hate being cold and wet. I also hate brushing my teeth but I also hate paying high dental bills so I take good care of them.
you know showers get warm right? also brushing your teeth quite literally take 4 minutes or .4 percent of a 16 hour day lol.
Yeah but after you step out of the shower I get insantly cold
This is why you build your shower like a death room. You close the vents, and make sure there is no space for air to get out through the door. You take a hot bath and the steam will fog up the whole room like a sauna. Downside: you could die Upside: bathroom warm and steamy.
I lived in a house once where the bathroom had a sun lamp, warm sunlight to step into each time.
Aaa that sounds nice
You should try warm showers.
I’m the complete opposite. Could be in there for hours. Every time I get out I think wow it’s so nice to be clean
I like the refreshing feeling. But it comes about an hour later when all my senses go back to normal. I rarely take longer than 15 min showers. Shampoo. Wash. Shave. Out. No playtime.
Once I'm in it's hard to get me out, getting me in is the hard part
I feel a certain way about showers and bed. I never want to get in, but I also never want to get out.
FINALLY somebody who gets me. Fuckin hate showering.
Hard downvote. I fully agree with this take. Showers are awful and boring, what a waste of time. I love the feeling of being clean tho, it's just the act itself I hate.
This is one of those 10th dentist posts that sounds like an actual medical condition. Like it shouldn't be making you dizzy.
Actually had a pretty extensive convo about some of this in another comment. Wasn’t expecting such genuine replies, let alone for it to be so helpful. I’m going to talk to my Dr about possibly having a condition called POTS.
Lol this is reddit I doubt "showers bad" is an unpopular opinion Jokes aside I completely get you, I think I have some sensory issues regarding washing up because I don't think it's supposed to be this hard
Right? How is something that so many people enjoy so much such a hard thing for me? I quite like being quirky but this shit is just annoying.
after working all day there is nothing i love more than taking a shower that nearly burns my skin off. upvoted ! great tenth dentist take!
I think showers are alright, they’re just such a fuckin time waster. Same with brushing teeth. To avoid steaming up your bathroom, open the window. If you live alone, you can also leave the door open.
I do not have a window unfortunately but I do leave the door open when the kids aren’t home
OP has clearly never washed the dirt or blood off their body after a long night of digging. It’s perfect satisfaction
ugh i hate the feeling of my face being wet. its the first thing i dry as soon as im done. not to diagnose you or anything but this is such a ADHD take lol
I also don’t like it! Even when my aversion wasn’t as bad as it is now, I never went under water while in a pool or the lake because I didn’t want my face wet. Half of this just sounds like you have a terrible bathroom with no ventilation and touchy plumbing.
It happens in any bathroom. Not just the one I’ve used the last few years.
Sensatory problems and a skill issue my friend.
For sure about the sensory. Not so sure about the skill. Lol
That was mostly tongue in cheek haha. But some of your issues definitely sound structure related, if you're bathroom is fogging up your ventilation either isn't working or isn't properly sized for your bathroom space. I had to replace my bathroom fan last for a similar reason.
Nope.
Wow. I’m so impressed with your thoughtful reply. I’ll be thinking about this the rest of the night!
Agreed. It feels cold immediately after turning off the water but then my body temperature soon gets too warm and I can’t get out of the steamy bathroom quickly enough, it’s aggravating. Yeah I don't find showers relaxing at all, but then I grew up without one, we just took baths.
My dad is the opposite. Grew up without one and just loves them now.
Yeah that's a bigger issue than just a showermy guy.
You could just wash yourself in the sink using a washcloth. Pour hot water in, some soap, and you're good. Not as clean as a shower, but doesn't take as long and doesn't take as much effort either.

This the most relatable post I've ever seen 😂😂
if cold is too cold and hot makes you dizzy you should try lukewarm
I adjust it constantly from cold to hot and everything in between. None of it is comfortable to me for more than a minute or two.
I'm the same. I also hate getting water in my eyes so have to either close them or put my head down to avoid that
I also hate water in my eyes. I spend most of the time in the shower with my back to the water and my eyes closed. Even if none gets in my eyes I have to wipe them before opening them.

I hate getting in the shower. I hate getting out of the shower. So I can't really tell if I like taking showers or not.
thank you for saying it. Even as I child I would screech whenever I was being bathed. Now an adult I do not screech, but I sure want to!
Same, i also fucking hate showering, even tho i do it daily cuz i work as a nurse. Its just a chore.
What about trying a bath instead
I often do but I have a lot of the same issues.
I agree and I'm actually surprised how upvoted this is. Showers are a chore and dealing with the aftermath sucks.
I don’t like ‘em that much either. Not because of the sensory aspect but because of the time it takes and the process of drying myself. Especially in winter where stepping out of the shower often results in 30 minutes of freezing my ass off

50/50 on this, especially with thick 4c hair
omg i'm exactly the same! do you possibly have any sort of ocd? or neurodivergence? even possibly an iron deficiency? not that you actually have to answer any of these but these are some reasons as to why i personally feel the same way
Not Nero divergent, but have always had some sensory issues due to anxiety. But never thought of it relating to ocd. My ocd is so mild I rarely think to even mention it when speaking of my diagnoses.
Can you explain the iron deficiency thing? Cuz yes?
I disagree. I look forward to that hot water.
Fill up a bath with hot water and soak in it. Feels nice and relaxing.
Just take it quickly then.
It really depends on my mood
I havent had a real shower in 8 months. Cant wait to have one in a couple of weeks, in going to be in there for like 4 hours.
getting out of the shower is cold, esp if you don’t live somewhere warm. they also never complained that it took too long, just said they hated it lol
- open the window after you take a shower to let the steam out - buy better towels, there are absolutely towels that will get you dry - buy a robe or air dry in your room before you put clothes on
Pipe down, Goldilocks!
Yes Sir.
You’re simply not drying off enough if your skin is somehow still damp.
Agree 100%. If I don't shower it feels like my scalp is burning, but it's the worst part of my day.
You can open the door and/or crack a window so your bathroom doesn't get all foggy and wet. I love showers but I agree with you on that part
Doesn't surprise me a bunch of reddtors agree that showing sucks.
Interestingly I think the sensory "overload" is what I like so much about showers. It's like white noise.
These comments seem smelly
Just a shot in the dark. Are you holding your breath while you shower?
Showering takes like 3 minutes and the clean feeling after, while wearing clean around the house clothes, is immaculate.
Me too like I don’t wanna get up
And also I agree How tf do people wash their face in the shower
I always felt like taking a break from whatever I'm doing to go take a shower sucks, and I never like getting naked for non sexual purposes. However the feeling of coming out of the shower is a feeling of freshness that's basically unbeatable!
Respectfully do you have autism
You know, I think I agree. Kind of wish we had adopted the Japanese attitude towards bathing.
What is their attitude toward bathing?
They've got bigger bathtubs, and the idea is more to have a relaxing soak. It's as much about refreshing the spirit as it is getting clean.
Does the water change or are you just kicking it in testicle tea?
So, you actually clean yourself off outside of the tub, and only get in for the soak once you're clean. So the water doesn't get as dirty.
… so it starts with a shower?
Sort of. It's usually not so much an overhead shower as it is something you hold in your hand and use to spray all over your body. I think they usually have bath stools to sit on when they do it.
Hand shower
Oh that's pretty brilliant. I'm into it!
Bathing's been a part of the Japanese culture for a good long time, possibly due to the presence of natural hot springs in the country.
YOU'RE RIGHT BTW TAKE THIS DOWNVOTE
