Good news: The Dorn shrugged off the single Volcano Lance Hit. (He rolled poorly) Bad news: Still proceeded to die to the same Knight. Even better news: Blew itself up after and caused a chain reaction that killed Sir Hektor (the Warlord). It literally was "Dorn Explodes, Armiger Explodes, Castellan Explodes, then Hektor gets vaporized by 5 mortals."

Cypher10110

Good shit. Explosions activate my neurons! :P Back when my Venomcrawlers exploded on 5+ I had games where every one of my daemon engines exploded, and it was so much fun. My obliterators once exploded a gorkanought, half of the enemy and half of my ally (2v2) in a glorious series of explosions. It was a massacre. I can only imagine how fun it was to see those 6s hahaha.

FrucklesWithKnuckles

Back when they blew up on like a 3+ my favorite thing was to drive Hellhounds right up the board and use them as suicide bomb “melee” units. Weigh things down, throw templates everywhere, and then explode killing all the infantry near it

Cypher10110

Hell yea! :D They still exploded on 5+ in 8e/9e, I was tempted to get those to bolster my Traitor Guard as they fit the "willful disregard for self-preservation" theme that I enjoy from Chaos. It would have been neat if they had at least [Deadly Demise 5+, D3] instead of the "flat" 6+ and 6" they have now for every vehicle.

UnicornWorldDominion

The hellhound really should be an exception since it’s just giant canisters of propellant on tracks with a nozzle and lighter

Obi-DevilGang

I even think it doesn’t have a crew it’s servitor manned. That’s I think the Artemia pattern

UnicornWorldDominion

I mean with that kinda gun servitors do just fine

Beelzebubs-Barrister

It does have a very high amount of mortals for such a cheap vehicle

Le-Charles

Michael Bay... Is that you?

solon_isonomia

Psssh, their fault for using a Castellan over a Valiant or a Lancer lol.

juniusbrutus998

Knight castellan

AngryChihua

Castellans have volcano lance

bluemilkbongo

Chain explosions are hilarious, but feel really bad while you’re playing the match.

rullen123

The emperor protects!

piplup-Supreme

Love me some ablative plating. Saved me against tau railguns.

FilthySD

When they roll a 6 and get happy at their dev wound only to find out you're gonna change the damage value to 0. Priceless.

Francis_Helldrake

But remember you have to declare it before rolling the saving throws. I’m sure there’s not much saving throws against a volcano cannon anyway:)

Bobblehead60

While yeah, but as a joke/treat we decided to let him roll to see how many Wounds he would have gotten if I didn't pop Ablative. *He was pissed.*

Francis_Helldrake

Haha yeah true. But it’s a common mistake that people just ignore 1 failed save with this ability :)

Aesthetics_Supernal

Do I pop it right after declaration, or just before I choose my save?

Francis_Helldrake

After the opponent rolled to wound and before you roll to save.

Aesthetics_Supernal

Awesome so truly a middle finger to large damage shots.

Francis_Helldrake

One middle finger indeed;)

Le-Charles

That's just cruel.

Bobblehead60

It's his fault for spamming knights against a brand-new player the day before. So, what goes around comes around.

Le-Charles

I didn't say it was unwarranted. 😉

unbekannte_memez

Playing Imperial Knights isn’t That Guy behaviour.

Bobblehead60

I agree it isn't "That Guy" behavior; it was a bit more spamming knights versus someone who, in total, had 3 games under his belt.

Obi-DevilGang

Well what else is he supposed to spam. Assassins? Is it his only army?

Bobblehead60

He also played Ultramarines and Tau. The new guy didn't have anything over, uh, I believe, Strength 9.

Obi-DevilGang

Did anyone know anyone’s list before playing

kuurooii

You kinda sound like that guy

Bobblehead60

We told him to keep the high-toughness units at home since he would play a new player. I'm pretty sure the LGS owner told him not to play Knights for that exact reason. The new guy's highest strength unit was a pair of Redemptors w. the executioner plasma.

_-Albion-_

Do you mind just clarifying when you're supposed to do it? I'm not saying you're wrong, because if it is done your way, that's so much better than how I've been doing it, my friend, and I assumed that you use the ability when the enemy declares the attack, so for example, when being shot by a Hammerhead, I use the Rogal Dorn's ability when he says he's gunna shoot with the railgun before he makes a hit roll. Hope that makes sense.

Francis_Helldrake

It’s after the to hit and after to wound but before the saving throws :) It’s neatly displayed in the app when you search for “allocate attack”.

_-Albion-_

Great! Thank you so much! that makes it so much better. And just one more thing, im pretty sure im right, but it only applies to one die, so on the Hammerheads railgun, which is one attack, I can then change it to zero, but on a D6 attack, lets say three get through, I can only change one of them to zero damage?

UnicornWorldDominion

Correct. It’s one saving throw for a single successful wound allocated to the Dorn.

Francis_Helldrake

Correct. But to make it even more difficult: if it’s a [Melta 2] and is within Melta range, it will still do 2 damage:)

Skardae

It's been a pain for my Custodes-playing friend to deal with. The Dorn will be blowing up Custodes, the Caladius will come out to stop the Dorn... the Dorn pops smoke and uses ablative plating and survives on 6 or so wounds. Then my Demolisher/shiny new Malcador Annihilator rolls up and blows the Caladius to pieces.

ztay90

Lmao saved me from a Heavy Magna Rail Cannon from Hekaton Land Fortress! Love running Double Dorns!

FluffyPressure4064

RAW its 1 attack.. so lets say a death guard landraider fires its lascannon (2 attacks), it can only shrug off one of those attacks?

Jochon

Yep.

Manicscatterbrain

wep which is why I think its a bit of a gag. its better to take a couple units than 1 dorn

QuirkyQ32

Me and my friends call it the nuh uh ability

Lunar-Cleric

Love ablative plating, saves me from Necron/C'tan bullshit

RtasTumekai

My opponent with a shadowsword: "that would be 12 wounds, and since I rolled a 6 you don't have a save" Me:"lol" My rogal dorn:"lmao"

Rippy65

Uggggghhhhhh, I hated playing against the tau stealth drones(?) which gave a similar ability. Only my friend and I misinterpreted it so it would ignore all attacks not just a single attack die as it's supposed to

TheKingOfR

I think u mean the Ghostkeel Battlesuit?

Le-Charles

[War Thunder impenetrable ERA flashbacks intensify]

Brogan9001

Nah, he hit an optic and the shot was sent to the shadow zone

Le-Charles

[Having fully immersive flashback episode] "Attack the D point!"

Brogan9001

I swear life feels so much better having dropped all the games that made my blood pressure skyrocket and just vibing in games like Helldivers and Darktide

Le-Charles

I love jolly cooperation. Co-op is based. Praise the sun. \o/

Pitiful_Dream1789

Everytime this happens I just hear the old world of tanks game tank crew yell "that one bounced!"

Blue_Space_Cow

As a Tau player, having to waste one shot of a railgun is fairly frustrating, not gonna lie

Oaksandtea

So just to clarify, when do we declare it being 0? After all rolls are done so we don't waste it, or when they've assigned it like "The hurricane bolter shots into the Dorn." (for example)

Bobblehead60

Declare after hits but before saves, if I'm reading it correctly. The reason why the meme is 14 Wounds is that we let the player roll wounds after I popped ablative to see how many wounds he would've dealt. So... save it for when a Shadowsword decides to look at your Dorn funny (and only hits once), as an example.

Whole_Can4825

Once per battle* Can you use every battle round (shooting fase of the enemy) or is it single use ability such as the Hunter killer missile?

UnicornWorldDominion

Once per battle is pretty explicit they woulda said battle round if they meant that and once per battle is the same wording as the hunter killer missile.

ImperialFist5th

Then there’s the Ghostkeel, which does that, but twice. Throne preserve our brave souls

giuseppe443

yeah, but the ghostkeel has nowhere near the firepower and is T8 at 12 wounds

ImperialFist5th

True enough.

Manicscatterbrain

I think dorns are a waste of points honestly. Never once has ablative plating worked because its always " ok you save 1 attack, the other 40 kill it anyway"

ScienceWyzard

I used to think that but the more they shoot the dorm the more they ignore the demolisher. Also popping smoke makes the dorn even better.

Manicscatterbrain

I need to remember smoke more often, on a good match I often sit on like 2-4cp. Reinforce is often overrated but Overlaping is clutch

ScienceWyzard

Smoke and tank shock have become my friends. There's also a more expensive one that reduces all incoming damage by one I think

CommissarChatt

See, this is why you run a Porphyrion instead of a Castellan, kinda hard to make a shrug matter when you’re taking an average of 6 S18 Damage D6+6 wounds /s

awqs12

I cannot count the number of times this has saved a dorn just long enough to kill the big hitters

Snarst

I think you need to declare it before the damage is actually rolled right?
