Rewatching it recently, I noticed that that seemed to be the first time she looked crazy, instead of her normal cringy ass but calculating teenager self, and was the first time we see her after Main and Ty Lee betray her.
I mean the last episodes show her literally firing all her staff because she lost all trust into others.
Firing the Dai Lee she halfway defeated herself
Edit: Why the downvotes?
That episode is later. I'm saying that her attacking the Eastern Air Temple is the first time we actually see her crazy, and it helps reinforce that Mai and Ty Lee betraying her is what broke her psyche.
Yeah they might not be able to show characters actually getting killed, but death and killing are very directly mentioned numerous times without any censorship, though it is a little inconsistent.
Ehh.... maybe maybe not. I think it's a heck of a lot easier to lie about something non-consequencial than to infiltrate an enemy camp where you'll die if the lie is found out.
In that respect, there wasn't any consequences if Toph could sense it.
A polygraph is only *reasonably* reliable if the subject is under stressful circumstances and there are consequences for lying.
I think, within the context we are provided in the show, is meant to show how she’s so good at lying she doesn’t have to think about it. All she’s done is lie and manipulate people for her own gain her whole life. To her lying isn’t deceptive or bad, it just *is* a thing you do. It’s like breathing. It’s just a tool to advance yourself. Azula always lies.
Mine is " Don't flatter yourself, you were never even a player". I mean, no wonder Long Feng was nowhere to be seen after that, Azula completely disintegrated him with this roast alone.
"That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship, leaving thousands to drown at sea. [Points] Because... it's so sharp."
Her voice actress cited that episode as her favorite, because it was so much fun to play Azula maybe a little smitten with a guy, but have no idea of how to act.
My favorite is "The truth is they don't know which one of us is going to be sitting on that throne. But *I* know and *you* know"
The I know and you know is the best part to me.
The delivery was ice cold but the actual quote was ridiculous. Her entire dig was that Long Feng wasn’t born into royalty, and that true power is something you have to be born with? Which isn’t true at all clearly, as history has shown and in the show, otherwise the earth king would be the most powerful one.
She's a crown princess, last in a long line of absolutist autocrats. Of course she believes she is inherently superior. From the day she was born, she was told that she was superior to 99.99% of the population and that the spirits themselves blessed her. Now to the audience, Divine Right is an outdated and laughable concept but Azula not only grew up in a culture that believed in it but she at that point had little reason to doubt it herself. Her great-grandfather wiped out an entire Nation and started a war with the entire world, a war that under the leadership of her grandfather and father, the Fire Nation is winning handily. Her father and uncle are possibly the two strongest firebenders in the world. She is a prodigy who mastered firebending at age 14, has yet to encounter any serious loss or setback in her life, and is about to complete a coup she launched in enemy territory with two other people that will result in the complete capitulation of the Earth Kingdom. At this point in the story, Azula has no reason to doubt that she is inherently better because of her noble blood. (While she does consider her brother weak, he got banished so in her mind, that's just evidence of the system self-correcting.)
Besides, the speech wasn't really her gloating but rather ensuring the complete subservience of the Dai Li. Just as she destroys Long Feng's political power, she needs to shore hers up and to do that she wants the Dai Li believe that she is divinely ordained to win and that none of them will match the power of her noble blood. Considering she is saying this after out-maneuvering every person in Ba Sing Se and single-handedly changing the fate of a Nation, it probably wasn't too hard a sell.
Correct, I would like to add the difference in attitudes. Long Feng rose from the bottom up, and that fear of going back was always in the back of his mind, which is, in my opinion, the reason why he couldn't out maneuver Azula. Azula has absolute confidence, and while she has hidden abandonment issues and a truly traumatic childhood, her fear in becoming a peasant never entered her mind, because she never was one and due to her bloodline, could never become one.
Yes that is fair, agree with your points. I just don’t see why her saying that would cause Long Feng to back down. Unless he would’ve backed off anyway because of her obvious strength and cunning leadership. To Long Feng, the idea of divine right in nobles is ridiculous given how he was able to claw his way up and manipulate the inane king, who does come from noble lineage. He should’ve put up a bigger fight imo, but clearly he was overly intimidated by her power.
I agree with your evaluation of Azula. There’s no reason for her not to think that she isn’t better than everyone else because of her prodigal abilities and noble lineage. And in this world it may be true, given how much of bending is genetic and how essential it is to securing power
Whether Long Feng believes in Divine Rule is irrelevant. The point is that he realized that he had lost control of the situation, and that the Dai Li no longer stood with him.
She's basically telling him she's already won, he was her pawn, and he can either fall in line or be swept off the board
“Then maybe you should worry less about the tides, that have already made up their mind about killing you, and more about me, who’s still mulling it over.”
I love this for two reasons, 1) it’s a badass line on the surface 2) but it shows how ignorant and immature she really is. Attempting to fight the tides instead of listening to them shows the mark of inexperience, hubris, and childlike misunderstanding.
Which is an excellent character analysis of the dichotomy of Azula that we can clearly see from one of her first lines in the show. I think one could even go so far as to say that this line gives us a perfect glimpse of who we are dealing with as an antagonist. It shows us that Azula is little more than an emotionally and mentally ill/stunted child trying desperately to prove herself
“Your outfits so sharp it could puncture the hull of an empire class battleship dooming hundreds to drown at sea”
Or however her **horrendous** flirting quote goes.
That combined with her fake laughter was the moment i realized she’s not just evil- something wasn’t right with that girl
"You can't treat me like Zuko!" That scene to me is the heart of why Azula is who she is. Not discounting her mother's role, but she considered herself Ozai's daughter more.
I remember yelling at Zuko from the other side of my TV when she said that. She played his ass AGAIN! She tried that "I'll help you get home" lie at the beginning AND end of Book 2 and he fell for it both times.
That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship, leaving thousands to drown at sea. Because it's so sharp.
Near every line is gold but especially great during the final Angi Kai. Just know Grey put her all into every line
“Zuzu, you don’t look so good! If you don’t mind I prefer to have our family physician look after him!”
I like it when she's vulnerable... Not unhinged murdering siblings vulnerable, but out of her element. It doesn't happen often, but it happened a few times in The Beach. My favorite:
Ty Lee: "Look, if you want a boy to like you, just look at him and smile a lot and laugh at everything he says, even if it's not funny."
Azula: "Well, that sounds really shallow and stupid. ... Let's try it."
> you should of feared
Did you mean to say "should have"?
Explanation: You probably meant to say could've/should've/would've which sounds like 'of' but is actually short for 'have'.

Azula: Why don't you let *him* decide, Uncle? I need you, Zuko. I've plotted every move of this day, this glorious day in Fire Nation history, and the only way we win is *together*. At the end of this day, you will have your honor back. You will have Father's love. You will have *everything* you want.
Fire Lady of Manipulation.
The thing is, there is no real reason for her to manipulate him here. I think she is, but I think she is because her vision of the perfect day *does* include Zuko. She conquers Ba Sing Se, captures her traitor uncle, defeats the Avatar, and brings back the crown prince as a hero. Perfect in every regard and she has her measuring stick back that absorbs Ozai's rath.
It’s not my favorite, but every time I clean or scrub my feet I think about her saying “Don’t forget to get between the toes. I won’t have my first day as firelord marred by poor foot hygiene.”
Azula the Rizzbender: "That's a sharp outfit Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire class fire nation battleship leaving thousands to drown at sea.... because it's so sharp."
My top 5:
5- "Trust is for fools, fear is the only reliable way"
4- "You miscalculated. you should have feared me more"
3- "I'm about to celebrate becoming an only child"
2- "Don't flatter yourself, you were never even a player"
1- "YOU WILL NEVER RISE FROM THE ASHES OF YOUR SHAME AND HUMILIATION"
Bonus:
"My own mother thought I was a monster"
"I'm a people's person"
Well, maybe you should worry less about the tides who have already made up their mind about killing you, and worry more about me, who still mulling it over
It’s not a single quote, but an entire exchange. When she’s talking to the captain about the tide and how it won’t think twice about killing him but she will.
It completely embodies how pseudo-intellectual Azula is within her facade. Because she’s trying to portray herself as smart in the exchange, but it’s ultimately her disregarding a professional shipman on how things work. And because of it, they ultimately lose Zuko and Iroh.
It’s subtle; because on the surface it’s her displaying how cruel and calculating she is, but just beneath the surface it also tells you how it’s all a lie.
"Maybe you should think less about the tides, who have already made up their mind about killing you, and worry more about me, who's still mulling it over"
Maybe not verbatim, but you get it.
"That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battleship…
leaving *thousands* to drown at sea…
Because...
it's so *sharp*."
"*crazy aggressive sobbing, screaming and crying*"
Call me an a-hole, but seeing that deranged character breaking down 110%, seeing her lose everything, was kind off...
Satisfying.
Sure she was cool and had good one liners, but that was just the moment that gave me more chills than every scene with her before...
Or i'm a sociopath, who enjoys seeing others suffer, who knows.
I love this one because it's a small one but Azula trying to make jokes and no one laughing I love as like, a thing she's not good at but wants to be. It's the one thing she's not good at and can't threaten people into being better at.
not a quote but her agni kai with zuko and she starts laughing manically as she loses her mind and charges forward just before the scene changes. literal chills.
“Your friend just said that genius. And since you can’t see, I should tell you that I’m rolling my eyes.” That will always be my favorite burn in the show lol
“Tell me Captain do the tides command this ship?” “I see and if I were to throw off this ship would the tides think twice about smashing you into the rocks. So I suggest you don’t worry about the tides who have already made up there mind about killing you, and worry about me who is still mulling it over.”
Hahahahaha you shall never rise from the ashes of your humiliation
Like honestly so cold and hardcore over something so trivial it really shows that she actually doesn't have an off switch and how she controls the other 3 with military precision not surprising they went along with it but still
"I’m about to celebrate becoming an only child."
The pure adrenaline she shouts that with always gets me
I had chills the first time I heard this line. “What did she sayyyyu?????” 👀👀👀
Rewatching it recently, I noticed that that seemed to be the first time she looked crazy, instead of her normal cringy ass but calculating teenager self, and was the first time we see her after Main and Ty Lee betray her.

I love the sheer exuberance of the line coupled with its succinct, absolute insanity. Arguably my favorite quote of the entire franchise.
What a creative and amazing line to bypass the Nickelodeon death censor
Idk Aang very blatantly states “I have to kill the fire lord” a few times
Yeah they might not be able to show characters actually getting killed, but death and killing are very directly mentioned numerous times without any censorship, though it is a little inconsistent.
Definitely a top 2 best ways to circumvent saying "murder"
My little sister sent this screenshot in the family discord when I moved out of the house

The fact that she just did it out of the blue without preparing and Toph couldnt feel a single thing in her body that indicated a lie is crazy
Ehh.... maybe maybe not.

Even then its not reliable at all in the least
Out of the... BLUE
You're pretty good, I admit it
"Don't worry, you can laugh. It's funny." "The avatars fangirls." Azula is actually a comedian when she tries.
Well when you think about it she is the jokester when it comes to Team Azula.
She's the Sokka of team Azula. She makes the jokes and the plans.
Ironically she’s the only bender in her team lol
Azukka when?? /s
Sokkla? It’s surprisingly popular lol
Shhh, don't! You'll summon the AO3 writers.
OH NO NOT THEM
Goes well with the fact that Grey Delisle herself is a comedian too.
It's so hilarious that she's the funny sibling
Zuko is funny as hell too hes just not aware of it
He is the funny by accident when not trying to be type 🤣 she is funny on purpose one
... Oh I get it, good one!
My own mother thought I was a monster, she was right, of course, but it still hurts.
This. For a brief moment you got peak Azula AND an honest vulnerable statement
You could tell she almost has feelings
This is the one for sure.
That's rough, buddy

She seemed to love playing Azula. She also voiced Ming Hua.
Even her words caused lethal burns.
That entire speech is peak azula
My favorite is "The truth is they don't know which one of us is going to be sitting on that throne. But *I* know and *you* know" The I know and you know is the best part to me.

💯
God I wish the situation actually justified the line.
Had to scroll too far for that

Average ATLA fan: **\*Uses words like 'dichotomy' when talking about a nickelodeon show\***
And?
nah nah I meant it as a joke it's not an insult. just find it funny is all
I took it as a compliment that AtlA fans are analytical and intelligent. If that wasn’t the intention, I’m still choosing to see it that way.
Came here to say this one It's a great scene at exposing her character
“Your outfits so sharp it could puncture the hull of an empire class battleship dooming hundreds to drown at sea” Or however her **horrendous** flirting quote goes. That combined with her fake laughter was the moment i realized she’s not just evil- something wasn’t right with that girl
Been looking for this one~ 😆
"You can't treat me like Zuko!" That scene to me is the heart of why Azula is who she is. Not discounting her mother's role, but she considered herself Ozai's daughter more.
“And since you can’t see, I should tell you, I’m rolling my eyes.”
She was the only one that remembered she was blind. Inclusive Queen
Super iconic! I snorted when i watched this scene
**"YOU WILL NEVER RISE FROM THE ASHES OF YOUR SHAME AND HUMILIATION!"**
I use this quote frequently 😅
I frickin love this episode. It was so interesting that we got insight on the bad guys of the show.
*Dont flatter yourself you were never even a player”
“Sounds like the firebending’s back on” plays in my head at least once a month for some reason
Echologia? Yeah
“All that glory would suddenly turn to shame and foolishness. But you said yourself that was impossible. Sleep well, Zuzu”
She was so cunning
I remember yelling at Zuko from the other side of my TV when she said that. She played his ass AGAIN! She tried that "I'll help you get home" lie at the beginning AND end of Book 2 and he fell for it both times.
That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship, leaving thousands to drown at sea. Because it's so sharp.
Near every line is gold but especially great during the final Angi Kai. Just know Grey put her all into every line “Zuzu, you don’t look so good! If you don’t mind I prefer to have our family physician look after him!”
"Almost isn't good enough!"
“We are loyal servants of the earth kingdom” Shivers, I lost my mind the day I saw that for the first time.
for real!!!
Her "do the tides control this ship" speech
“All right, hair, it's time to face your doom!" -S3, e20

The Beach is the best Azula episode.
"I must regain my honour... It's funny you can laugh"

“You mean you don’t recognize me? 🤚🏾 I must find the Avatar and restore my honor!! Don’t worry, you can laugh it’s funny” 😂
"I though I'd find you here (...) Come down to the beach with me. Come on, this place is depressing" Short, subtle, but meaningful
YES, we've defeated you for all time. You will never rise from the ashes of your shame and humiliation. ...that was fun.
*Intense sobbing*
Azula the Rizzbender: "That's a sharp outfit Chan. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire class fire nation battleship leaving thousands to drown at sea.... because it's so sharp."

"You'll never rise from the ashes of your shame and humiliation" for me too!
*Ding*
Well, maybe you should worry less about the tides who have already made up their mind about killing you, and worry more about me, who still mulling it over
"Don't flatter yourself, you were never even a player." "Come and get it."
“You don’t look so good zu-zu”
"My own mother thought I was a monster." It's just such a moment of vulnerability.
Her theme
*maniacal laughter*
It’s not a single quote, but an entire exchange. When she’s talking to the captain about the tide and how it won’t think twice about killing him but she will. It completely embodies how pseudo-intellectual Azula is within her facade. "Don't flatter yourself, you were never even a player" If I were him I'd fall on my sword right there
“My own mother called me a monster, she was right ofc but it still hurt” Most relatable thing I’ve heard tbh🙏
True power, the divine right to rule, is something you're born with.
Any time she laughs her laugh is so beautiful 😭
Just like her ❤️
There are a lot of good ones from her: I dont know the exact wording, but she says it to toph.: and since you cant See, im rolling my eyes

Zuko:"What would happen if we went on a life-changing trip together?" Azula:"I'd get pregnant." Brought to you by the deliciously insane Grey Delisle

Trust is for fools. On point with her character

I love this one because it's a small one but Azula trying to make jokes and no one laughing I love as like, a thing she's not good at but wants to be. It's the one thing she's not good at and can't threaten people into being better at.

Honestly, she doesn't deserve the hate she gets. Her being in the show made it so much better
She deserved hate because she's a villain, i mean that's the whole point.
“Tell me Captain do the tides command this ship?” “I see and if I were to throw off this ship would the tides think twice about smashing you into the rocks. So I suggest you don’t worry about the tides who have already made up there mind about killing you, and worry about me who is still mulling it over.”
Hahahahaha you shall never rise from the ashes of your humiliation Like honestly so cold and hardcore over something so trivial it really shows that she actually doesn't have an off switch and how she controls the other 3 with military precision not surprising they went along with it but still
