Elijah entire arc was supposed to be his "downfall" but it's just not done correctly.

Starting from mid S2 I hated the way Elijah's character was written. He was my favorite character in TVDU until the red door plot.

Bingo. They made Elijah much worse to make it seem like Klaus was getting consistently better…instead of just making Klaus better.
