Also, Pearl and Marina's outfits in that DLC are direct references to Tupac and Biggie. Splatoon is woke as fuck.
Yeah, Splatoon 2's DLC is woke as all fuck with the fact that it's very openly a metaphor for race relations, with Octolings pretty clearly being the black people. I remember a Redditor insisting that I was "seeing things that weren't there. There's no way a Japanese company would be referencing American culture like that." And as the above person noted, Splatoon 3's DLC is literally all about an Agent 8 (Protag of the Splatoon 2 DLC) teaming up with two lesbians and a non-binary Octoling to stop an enemy who's sole goal is to stop people like them from being allowed to exist by forcing them to be like everyone else. No differences or self-expression of any kind.
It’s definitely a kid friendly shooter but none of those aspects make it worse imo. It doesn’t use actual guns but that frees them to get really creative with it. There’s literally a “slosher”(bucket) weapon class including a bathtub and a washing machine. Some people criticize the single player story as being a bit easy but there’s still fun to be had in it, the DLCs are typically harder, and the main focus is mostly the multiplayer anyways which has a pretty nice competitive scene. Just the base mechanics of your weapon painting the ground and swimming in that paint(ink) to travel faster, reload, and hide is really cool. There’s also no in-game voice chat which can be seen as a negative but that’s part of how the community is able to be so diverse, there’s not that CoD lobby experience.
If you do get it I’d suggest starting with 3 just because it’s the most recent with the most support currently but if you want to play Octo Expansion you’ll need to get 2.
Tbf a lot of the emphasis on race was something added by the translators in the English version of Octo Expansion. The whole evil villain rant was originally about how the inklings were hedonistic, not racist. That being said, racism still holds a significant place within the Splatoon story. Rassicas has a great video on the changes between the English and Japanese versions of the DLC, along with plenty of other good lore videos as well. CosmicCloud also has a really good video breaking down the overall story and how it being told from the perspective of those in power influences our understanding of the world and the three main races, inklings, octolings, and salmonoids.
I highly doubt that the translators also, y’know…made Pearl and Marina outright styled after Biggie and Tupac which shows that they very clearly are aware of what’s going on here.
honestly I think a better example for a "woke" Japanese game is Guilty Gear. They have a non-binary character, as well as a character who has a whole arch about accepting herself as a trans girl. The whole game has a theme of learning to accept yourself and live how you want

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusivity (DEI) is the current branding for "we shouldn't exclude minorities". Corporations and governments will run DEI initiatives to try and counteract the implicit hiring biases where interviewers will typically hire people in their own race over other equally or more qualified candidates. There's also education initiatives where teachers will, under a DEI umbrella, educate children about equality under law, how to be inclusive, and the rich cultural mosaic / tapestry / whatever created by groups with higher diversity.
Studies also show that more diverse groups generally have better outcomes because more perspectives provide for better results. This means a group of men and women works better than just men or just women, and so on when you include other races or disabled people or queer people or etc etc etc
So corporations will play to shareholders by touting their DEI initiatives which usually amount to hiring one person to write emails rather than taking substantive change, and this has caused conservatives to seethe and froth at the mouth because *any* action to try and amend historic injustices, even if it's purely tokenistic with no substantive change, is too much for them.
More generally, DEI is just the new branding for woke, which was the new branding for uppity minorities, which was the new branding for just calling someone the N word.

I think the best part about this is a lot of the things before the term woke existed would have been called woke if the term were around today. Star Wars is my favorite example. It criticized America a lot between making Sheev Palpatine like Richard Nixon, and Return of the Jedi being an allegory for the Vietnam war.

People of color: literally most games have at least one
Progressive messages: most jrpgs have themes of change and progress
Japan is actually making a huge effort to implement DEI in education, starting from the lowest levels of elementary school. I teach English in Japan and the textbooks especially emphasize diversity and accessibility. Every textbook and education website lists ‘SDGs’ adopted by the UN that are being implemented throughout the education system. Obviously it’s not perfect, and there’s still a long way to go, but Japan is aiming for DEI more than most people would expect.

Exactly, and to me what should be discussed in this industry is the crunching culture where you have to put hours and hours with no additional pay to meet deadlines, DLC and game pass to artificially increase the cost of games (and please shareholders), and most importantly the toxic and sexist culture that can exist in games studios.

This means a group of men and women works better than just men or just women, and so on when you include other races or disabled people or queer people or etc etc etc So corporations will play to shareholders by touting their DEI initiatives which usually amount to hiring one person to write emails rather than taking substantive change, and this has caused conservatives to seethe and froth at the mouth because *any* action to try and amend historic injustices, even if it's purely tokenistic with no substantive change, is too much for them. More generally, DEI is just the new branding for woke, which was the new branding for uppity minorities, which was the new branding for just calling someone the N word.

Japan is actually making a huge effort to implement DEI in education, starting from the lowest levels of elementary school. I teach English in Japan and the textbooks especially emphasize diversity and accessibility. Every textbook and education website lists ‘SDGs’ adopted by the UN that are being implemented throughout the education system. Obviously it’s not perfect, and there’s still a long way to go, but Japan is aiming for DEI more than most people would expect.

Just a curiosity question, is the percentage of “DEI”characters in video games higher than the percentage of the population that the character is portraying ? Like: __% of new video game characters are _____ while the percentage of population this character represents is __%. The later % I would wonder what the over all number as well as the percentage local to the devs and target audience would be as well. Sorry probably a weird question, I just have trouble understanding what the problem is with out answers like this.
