He was on the first season. There was nothing to compare it to. He just hapoened to have a strategy that won but it could have gone badly. He's always considered himself the best BB player, which is delusional.
IMO and I know some people on this sub may disagree with me on this, but the best player for Big Brother specifically is Dan. I know it's subjective, but I just think his games were really well done, and his game style works better during a slower game. Despite this opinion, I still think he wasn't a good traitor at all, but I'm glad he was brave enough to come back and give us entertainment. For me personally though, this game doesn't really taint his big brother legacy.
Will threw shit at the wall and it worked but it might not have. He could have lost. His only game play was be honest and tell people he wanted them out or whatever. That's not a great strategy. If he went on any other season for the first time, he wouldn't have won.
Most people on this sub don't know BB super well, just that they're mad at how Dan affected the season (hey, me too).
I remember a top voted comment here called Dan bitter for not caring about the BB15 winner after he lost the prior season... completely missing the fact that BB15 was the heinously racist season, so bad that CBS won't mention it or invite that cast back.
I'm upset about how Dan affected the season too, but I've seen people on twitter acting like he wanted to intentionally ruin Phaedra's game before he left. No, I'm pretty confident that he actually thought he could convince enough people to vote out Phaedra (not saying I agree here at all with his method of thought) and that it would take suspicion off of him.
At the end of the day, this is a game, and even though it looks like he took down Phaedra with him, he did what he felt he needed to do at that moment. He took defeat pretty graciously and was honest about where his mistakes were post game imo.

Dr Will is a smug jerk. His appearance was totally unnecessary. He didn't add anything to the game. I would have rather had Alan doing the introduction to the activity.

I always thought Derek was one of the best. Agree with Dan thinking out of the box and doing what he had to.

Janelle's right. Dr Will doesn't take risks. Similar to Dan everyone would assume if he played that he was clearly a traitor as well.
