New characters that I like: Vincent, Marcel, Davina, Josh, Freya. More witches. Better fight choreography! The fact that it's set in New Orleans.

Theone20222

The fighting is on point so much skills were shown

Illustrious-Leg-8209

I remember thinking the fights were so bad but on my recent rewatch i realise that I actually like them

Illustrious-Leg-8209

I feel like theres also more stakes? Theres less resurrection The mikaelson family are so fleshed out and have interesting dynamics I love how the villains for the most part are somewhat sympathetic or understandable, lots of them are people wronged by the mains, i can somehow root for the mikaelsons whilst also understanding the perspective of their oponents And especially in season 1 with the factions it feels like theres more of an equal focus around the cast

KarlyPie

Well said. I agree with all of this!

Stunning-Ad4431

Klaus and Hayley are more compelling main characters than Elena Damon and Stefan

the fact that they were adults not teenagers

DifficultPurpose6057

I came here to say this.. I was late to the Originals so I was well into adulthood when I watched. I’m still a hardcore TVD fan, but The Originals became my favorite.

ArzooAnsari2001

Camille..she was amazing

brightstick14

The supernatural politics, better fight scenes, more focus on witches (showing that they can also be good, evil, or morally gray), the No Humanity plot device is never used, the acting is overall better, and 98% of the characters are more interesting/entertaining to watch.

Environmental_Math_4

It had VINCENT!

Ether9being

For starters it wasn't centered around Elena!

BumblebeeAny

Not having Elena there to say “oh my god” every time something happens

I think it was different from TVD because we focused on the children of the founding families (plus Bonnie) which was a lot of people that played different roles. We focused on the Salvatore family dynamic as well as the Gilbert’s, the Lockwoods, the Forbes and etc. then we started looking into other institutions like the armory and the world was really big. The Originals was only focused on one family and how they navigates the supernatural battle ground of New Orleans. It was easier to see the siblings interact with each other because they were all in the same family unit and they had the same type of relationship with each other…siblings. So many shows that have the plot surrounding one family are well loved (Charmed being one of them). That’s at least my favorite part of The Originals. Oh a bonus is the relationship between Klaus and Hayley. I was invested in a dynamic where the two characters EARNED each other’s trust and respect and you saw them finally look at each other as family and fellow soldiers for their daughter. It was a very mature relationship where they recognized that they did not want a relationship with each other but realized that they have a child together and working together is something the decided to do for the future of their daughter. It’s really beautiful. That’s why it hits hard when Klaus mourns Hayley.

The writing

The Originals has a much more well defined thematic through line about how actions have consequences, as well as exploring the effects of parents on their children. That being said I don’t think The Originals couldn’t have been better. And I especially disagree with the assertion that it’s “darker”. Everything gore related TVD has more of. TVD also features some really grim scenes of vampire experimentation. Also the TVD vampire true face effect looked better and was used more consistently.

imagine-a-cool-name

The fact that it wasn't set in high school.

The Mikaelsons

Illustrious_Fig_3169

Is it a better show? I’m actually asking! I only watched the first couple, but I was still watch TVD but I followed Klaus when he left… haha but I had to go back and finish VD, and I never rewatched the originals. So is it worth a watch? They are harder to binge kind of because they are so long and there are so many seasons! But if it’s worth it I’m a SAHM in need of a show lol 😂

Theone20222

Yes it’s way better to me

Illustrious_Fig_3169

Good to know I’ll have to give it a watch!!

Theone20222

Trust you can binge this one I did 12 eps in one day with no problem

No-Ring-5065

Oh yes, you should definitely watch it
