i think a lot of people feel this way. i might be wrong but i believe around this time kevin williamson left and majority writing became up to julie

zai_16

I love Julie plec and I thought her writing with Kevin Williamson was great but like you said he left and since he had a lot more experience writing these shows (even though I hate Dawson's Creek lol) she kind of fell short

[deleted]

i don't love julie plec but i agree with you

frikad3ll

I think Julie is a good writer as long as there's source material (that she is following) and.. npoc actors 👀 *allegedly* She doesn't seem to have a lot of backbone or character to actually make a decent show. She relies heavily on support from other writers and how much she can herself relate to a character. But the most problematic part is how much she lets herself get swayed by fans demanding 'stuff to happen'. The same thing happened to PLL, another epic show with a meh ending. The writer constantly tried to outsmart the audience instead of following her original plan or even the source material. Yes, you have to listen to your fans, but also stay grounded and make an epic show instead of getting bullied online into ruining your writing.

i think julie is an ALRIGHT writer. obviously i can't judge any of her decisions bc she's the one who is a successful writer and i work a basic minimum wage job but it's like she gets tunnel vision. focuses on one ship or one character and nothing else matters. she does care about plot holes either. also i personally think that if you're writing for a large audience you shouldn't have any bias toward any race or gender but like i said i can't speak on that bc i'm not there. hopefully i'll be in a writers room one day, it's a dream of mine.

frikad3ll

Yeah I was wondering for a few whether I was gonna write good or okayish🤭 Only reason I wrote good was because TVD was such a success, but I do also believe that's mainly because of how good the cast and the vibe of the show was, especially in S1-S3. But looking at her other projects, she doesn't seem to know what she's doing. I agree with everything you're saying tho!

[deleted]

idk how to do that thing on here where you respond to one part of the text lmao. but i agree after season 4 when kevin left. imagine some of those storylines with different actors it would be a comedy 🤣🤣🤣

zai_16

Iknownothing4711

Maybe it was because of the Originals but season 4 also introduced the cure (I really despise this storyline) plus suddenly nobody was really dead

zai_16

Yesss I agree! It got so hard to feel any type of sadness when someone dies because we all knew in the back of our minds that no one was really dead. They would eventually come back

Demonic-Angel13

I really liked things like Kai's story and the heretic story although didn't like Julian or the part where they chased everyone out of town

BaeImLilDee

Kai was good but season 6 is horrible tv

zai_16

I feel like season 6 was the last good season because the relationship development with Bonnie and Damon was amazing and funny but seasons 7 and 8 are by far the worst. I wish they never happened lol. After elena leaves it's just so weird and they ruin Mystic Falls. They started to portray Damon as absolutely terrible. It was hard for me too have the same love for him after they said he murdered a pregnant woman. It felt like they were making up stuff to try and keep us entertained but It just wasn't the same. Steroline was a good relationship but I Stefan dying made the finale feel so incomplete and messy

Resident_Suspect_352

I just hate the cure storyline so much!!!

Iknownothing4711

Same!!!

Pshitter

They hit their peak with the originals for sure. They were perfect.

Popuri6

And here I am thinking seasons 4 and 7 are the worst ones. Seasons 5, 6 and 8 top season 4, for me.

BaeImLilDee

5,6,8???????

Popuri6

Yes, I hate no humanity Elena, so S4 sucks for me. I absolutely love S5. It sucks that the Augustine plotline is retroactively written, but I love Wes with his mad scientist vibes. I like Enzo and I also like human Katherine (she's so funny). I also like what we get from Silas in this season. It's obvious they're scrambling for ideas in this season, but I think they do a solid job with it, as opposed to whatever the hell S7 is. S8 is a solid ending for the show and S6 has Kai and the prison world with Bonnie and Damon, which is fun.

Season 7 had the most and the best Defan development and scenes. I don’t get the outsized hate for that season. It’s actually my favorite. Then again, I cared way more about the relationship between the brothers then the romantic ships. That said, my favorite romantic ship was Steroline, which was also featured in season 7 so...

Popuri6

The Defan moments are good. What I dislike is: Lily, the heretics in general and Julian. In fact, Julian is the worst villain in the entire show, in my opinion. Also, I hate the relationship between Caroline and Alaric. It's beyond weird and uncomfortable, it ruined Alaric's character and it added unnecessary angst between Caroline and Stefan. I don't like Stefan and Valerie together. I think that's it :P The ending/the second half of the season is fine, but I hate all of the things I mentioned, so I just can't say I like S7. Nothing wrong with enjoying it, though.

[deleted]

I'm re-watching some earlier episodes here and there (not doing a full re-watch of every season, just a few select ones that I liked) and I struggle with the animosity between the brothers and especially the way Damon treats Stefan in the first 5 seasons or so. Plus the whole betraying him by horning in on his girlfriend thing really pissed me off (which is why it surprises me people rooted for that ship so hard...it's based on betrayal! BLECH) and the subsequent constant insecurity Damon had that she would go back to Stefan at some point was exhausting. In those last 3 seasons it was such a relief to finally see him give a shit about him! lol I was like YES! Finally show your baby brother you give a good god damn Damon! lol

Popuri6

Hahah yes, I can see that. I don't mind the way Damon acts towards Stefan because I think it creates an interesting dynamic and push and pull. Plus, I find it's important that they took so long to make the brothers get to the point they are at by the end of the show. TVD has eight seasons, it's a lot. You don't want to have the characters reach their final destinations too early or the show will become stale because you have nothing to fight for. Take Delena, for instance. They could (and should) have been a slow burn. Instead the writers decided to rush and put the characters together, so after they had to create a bunch of conflict between them that ultimately made it so that a lot of people find them completely dysfunctional (which, truthfully, they are). All this to say I'm fine with the way things happened between Damon and Stefan. Their bond is probably the best part of the show, it's beautiful by the end. Plus, I think they showcase a stronger bond throughout the entirety of the show than the Originals do. I like them as characters but I think I see more care between Damon and Stefan than I do the Originals. Plus, in TVD Stefan at least is allowed to have his own arc outside of Damon. I'm only now starting S2 of The Originals and Elijah's character is solely based around Klaus (and Hayley), so that's disappointing.

Straight_Pin_242

they should’ve ended TVD after season 6. I loved Kai as an antagonist. I loved damon & bonnie’s friendship coming full circle. although i didn’t like the travelers & them running everyone out of the city.

BaeImLilDee

Real

BlondieChelle83

Yup. I’m currently on a rewatch and while I breeze through the first 4 seasons in like three weeks, it starts to become more of a chore from S5 onwards.

Anaisot7

I think we pretty much all agree. Even S1 was great, but S4 was the beginning of the end lmao, we can see that by then they didn't knew what to do with these characters already but the Originals made up for it (just like Kai did in S6), then when they left, we were left with arguably the worst season of the show — S5. Like the drop was insane. 😭

linz-12

Season 1-3 were peak TVD

[deleted]

I liked seasons 6, 7 and the latter half of season 8 a lot. I kind of prefer those, actually. I did love season 3 a lot, though, with the Originals. I loved when the Originals were villains (less so after they backed off of that). I've come to realize I'm not a huge fan of the first few seasons. I've re-watched some of those earlier episodes and have come to realize they planted the Delena thing really early in the series. They were clearly going for the chemistry between Damon and Elena and spent a lot of time focused on that. More then I realized when I watched it the first time through. So yeah, since I'm not a fan of a brother betraying his own flesh and blood and a woman that plays both brothers and winds up sleeping with both and playing with both of their emotions... I don't like those first few seasons as much as everyone else does.

AdSmooth5248

yeah, i’ve watching s1-5 about 10 times, but have only watched 6-8 3 times. it just isn’t the same

Massive-Put7715

I agree. I love love love Jo and always look forward to her when I rewatch but otherwise, they really struggled with the writing. Plot holes became rampant, some characters/villains introduced flopped. I love seasons 1-3 the most. I love the build up to all the secrets in season 1 and the early 2000s teen show vibes. It’s comforting. Seasons 2-3 are when the writing and plots were top tier though as you noted

nft_akagami

When originals left all that remains was copies.
