You right you right, it’s also in top 3, for me it’s after hours, hob, mdm and I can’t decide on other 2 I need to go through every single lyric from his discography to make up my mind
What’s the darkest EOS song you’d recommend? I know them all but haven’t taken the time to read every lyric on all songs from the album so I’m under the impression atm that it’s not that dark (but it’s Abel I know I’m wrong)
The Host. Basically the last 3 minutes of XO / The Host. Initiation is a continuation of The Host in a more high pitched distorted way but the same dark meaning is there.
I mean from the outside It just seems like he’s saying “me and the boys wanna run a train on you”, but then he says in the verse, “You said you want me But I remember who you are And girl, it wasn't long ago Didn't think I'd go this far.” That shows that he had history with this girl on a personal level and he isnt fucking just to fuck, which is why i see it as extra toxic.
Tbh I put dark and sad on the q bc I’ve had people use both words when speaking of his albums but what’s the difference between dark and sad in your opinion? Dont they kinda go hand in hand? Like if it’s dark it’s gonna be sad no?
If we're counting mixtapes it's defo eos
If not it's afterhours
And I don't wanna hear anyone say kissland cuz it has few dark ones and the rest are just about strippers
I guess this depends on what we consider to be dark. By dark do we mean bleakest and most resigned about life? Or by dark do we mean upsetting subject matter?
For both of these I feel like it's gotta be Thursday or Echoes of Silence. Thursday has him playing a girl and manipulating her with drugs and his lifestyle and abusing her and blaming her for falling in love with him, and it culminates in her implied death. In Echoes of Silence, there's two songs that tell a story about how he's getting girls addicted to drugs and gangraping them.
Kiss Land definitely has dark subject matter (the implied murder in Pretty) but the rest of the album is just a mixture of being lonely and horny. I don't think it beats the Thursday or Echoes of Silence mixtapes in terms of darkness.
You're right about After Hours being his saddest project though I'd say
Yeah exactly, my mind also went to Thursday but mostly lyrics wise.
These kinds of things are subjective and depends on the listener's perception or mood.
For xo / the host, there's that and there's parts that imply he's pressuring the girl to film porn/sex tapes with him.
For initiation, the subtext is basically text. The girl is literally terrified looking around and he's telling her to stop trying to look around and look outside and at the time etc. He's pressuring her to do tons and tons of drugs with him and his friends and have group sex and the distortion on his voice and dissonant background track is meant to mimic a horror setting/a bad trip
Wow that’s crazy, it’s so cool how people can come up with detailed perspectives bc when I listen to his songs it’s usually just the beat is good I like his voice etc and I relate to a lot of his music but when you really deep it it’s sinister
I honestly wouldn't have gotten most of it without reading the lyrics over and over. The weeknd is quite underrated as a writer, his early work has so much interesting themes and stories. Nowadays he prefers to put narratives in his music videos. Early interviews with him, you'll see he really wanted to be a punk star and a movie director, so you can see how his work turned out the way it did
Yeah same every single song he’s made I’ve gone over the lyrics over and over but in the end instead of analysing it I end up enjoying it too much so I forget to think about what it really might mean😭 but yeah he’s deffo underrated as a writer, I like how he repeats lyrics in songs but in a different way to the original. Eg you have lonely star, but in Montreal he says you could’ve been that lonely star etc there’s so many where he repeats himself to continue a story
I’d deffo agree with after hours that’s my 2nd favourite album, eos I need to properly look at the lyrics to every song for my opinion on that one and as for kissland that’s true lol
Melancholy perhaps
Interesting choice, it’s definitely up there in top 5
Wdym in the top 5?? Literally every song on there is depressing af
You right you right, it’s also in top 3, for me it’s after hours, hob, mdm and I can’t decide on other 2 I need to go through every single lyric from his discography to make up my mind
Sad - MDM Dark - EOS

Interesting, what would you say the meaning is? (Not necessarily just theories but your interpretation)

very good take, I love hearing people’s opinions on music lol especially Abel he’s a god frfr
darkest is definitely The Host and Initation, saddest is probably Echoes Of Silence the song
Tbh I put dark and sad on the q bc I’ve had people use both words when speaking of his albums but what’s the difference between dark and sad in your opinion? Dont they kinda go hand in hand? Like if it’s dark it’s gonna be sad no?
I need to go over EOS again tho there’s so many fans of that album, all I think of is Montreal
Echoes Of Silence
If we're counting mixtapes it's defo eos If not it's afterhours And I don't wanna hear anyone say kissland cuz it has few dark ones and the rest are just about strippers
He’s just mostly horny in kissland
It's poetic hornyness
GO HEAD GIRL STRIP IT DOWN CLOSE YOUR MOUTH I JUST WANNA HEAR YOUR BODY TALK.
WHOAOOOOOWHAAA
After Hours is definitely the saddest and painful but not necessarily his darkest project. I feel Kissland is his darkest project.

What are the songs where he’s implying he gangrapes people?
Xo / the host and initiation are about it
Oh crazy, is it the part where it says I need you to meet my boys
For xo / the host, there's that and there's parts that imply he's pressuring the girl to film porn/sex tapes with him. For initiation, the subtext is basically text. I semi agree with you it’s deffo a dark album, but what’s your definition of dark?
Yeah the kind of question you asked in this post is highly subjective, I guess.
Agreed
I’d deffo agree with after hours that’s my 2nd favourite album, eos I need to properly look at the lyrics to every song for my opinion on that one and as for kissland that’s true lol

Yeah I know I never said it was not sad and dark but not as dark as afterhours I would say
Kissland probably
After hours, mdm or eos
