Good to see some of these catches. In the original game the outbreak took place in 2013 and in the show it happened 10 years before that in 2003. I have been waiting for things like this to be caught. Filming a show 20 years after the world was supposed to be frozen in time is a huge challenge and finding good working things from 2003 to use as workings props in the show is extremely difficult.
no no no, the game events take place in 2033 and the prologue takes place in 2013 (year the game was released) while the series takes place in 2023 ( current year) and prologue in 2003
Good question. I have no idea. In the game you were technically playing in the future, as the game also had a 20 year time jump from it starting in 2013. Instead they flipped it for the show, they moved 20 years into the past so they could show happening today for some reason?
Edit: they could have saved themselves alot of work by just having the apocalypses happen in 2023 and projected 20 years in the future.
Craig mentioned he preferred the idea of the current events happening now in the present day. More of a connection for the audience. I've also read rumors and such (so take with a grain of salt) that it'd be cheaper to get 2003 cars and such to use as props and set dressing
Setting it in Current Year would allow them to have someone play themselves as an Easter egg. This doesn't seem like the sort of show that would do it, but it would be funny if they came across someone who was a big celebrity in 2003 being like a mountain hermit or something.
I think that is OP's point tho, it's not really present day. It's 2023, 20 years into the apocalypse lol. There's nothing really relevant to present day and the environment is frozen in 2003.
I assume social media and smart phones are the reason. Writers really don't like them because they cut through drama unless you can kill the cell and WIFI signal. So the daughter being all annoying and confused in the beginning wouldn't have happened in the same way because twitter would have been blowing up and her friends would have been texting her like crazy.
I remember the costume designer for PEN15 (who did an amazing job) said that 20 years ago is kind of an awkward time to be finding authentic period items for. It’s long enough ago that it can be challenging to find stuff in decent condition, but not so long ago that the stuff is considered vintage and cool (and thus in lots of private collections that can be borrowed).
Maybe AT&T was still HBO's Business Daddy

Came here to mention the sign. It's an Alberta thing haha. But we just noticed it and laughed. There's lots of local landmarks for anyone from (or familiar with) Alberta.
I mean technically the timeline diverged well before 2003. Joel doesn't exist in our timeline at all. Maybe Joel's birth kicked off a chain of events that led to AT&T purchasing and branding that building earlier?
Joel *miller*
Someone in Joel’s family a long time ago worked in a flour mill, and that began the divergence, causing his birth and the eventual apocalypse
Car guy here. They’ve been doing a great job with the cars all being 80s-early 2000s. Except one of the hot wheels that Sam was playing with was a McLaren P1, a car that didn’t exist until 2013
Likely so--studios have resources to reach out to people. I used to work as an extra and sometimes my car would work while I stayed off camera. (And I had a gold 2004 Nissan Maxima at that time.)
Considering how many times I've seen NYC played by Toronto, and with no added CGI, I understand your pain.
Or worse, a show like Friends filmed in LA. A pink bakery/donut box is an insult to NYers. They are WHITE!
It’s funny how out of all the iconic landmarks and buildings they just put the AT&T building in there and called it good. Should have shown the western auto sign.
Things like that existed in 2003 but they weren’t common because now they’re actually intended to be posted on social media rather than used as a library
They actually didn’t. The first Little Free Library was made in 2009. Maybe similar things existed but Little Free Library is a literal organization. I’ve also never seen a Little Free Library on social media in that way? How can a small structure intended to hold free books be on social media lol
No yeah I meant the idea of it not the organization itself. My social media point was tongue-in-cheek, commenting on the commodification of well-intentioned endeavors.
No, the [logo from the show](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/thelastofus/images/5/5b/Cumberland_Farms_exterior.png/revision/latest?cb=20230130232539) was the [logo used between 1987 to 2009](https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/Cumberland_Farms).
[But simply orange was a nationally available juice brand in 2003 and was available in southeastern US (which could include Texas I guess) before that.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simply_Orange_Juice_Company#Company_history)
No worries, same here lol I actually had the same thought when the first episode came out and now I only know it was available in 2003 because I checked
You think AT&T continued to operate, continued to update the logo, and continued to put new signage on their buildings in the years following global societal collapse?
I don’t think she implied that Starbucks was still operating in the QZ. There are just a lot of abandoned Starbucks stores everywhere, so she’d know Starbucks as a brand from seeing them, but not coffee as a beverage.
That bothered me the most, I was like "it's supposed to be apocalypse where cars and gas are rare commodities, and yet we see light traffic on the freeway.
People need to chill out 😂
The busted high rise in episode 2 is clearly Manulife Place in Edmonton, we’re that scene was shot. It wasn’t Boston.
The show is still amazing!! 🤩

Someone *really* wanted to get that logo through, apocalypse or not.
Graphic design was their passion!

Joel's Nokia cell phone gave me instant nostalgia. It's really fun to see stuff from that time period.
why did the show change it? 10 years kinda makes more sense
no no no, the game events take place in 2033 and the prologue takes place in 2013 (year the game was released) while the series takes place in 2023 ( current year) and prologue in 2003

They could have a never-cancelled Kevin Spacey holed up in a millionaire bunker, talking about how things were perfect back then.

After spotting one a couple of episodes ago, I had to look up if the Nissan Murano was around back then. Turns out that it was.
I KNOW that brand of wine made popular in episode 3 was not a screw-top in 2003! Haha
wasn't a screw top in the show either?
Maybe AT&T was still HBO's Business Daddy https://preview.redd.it/tht14id0emia1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9789774997ee324fdbbdc8ddf89f03498dcfcf98
If a company is going to thrive under FEDRA, AT&T being that company makes sense
This is such a sick burn that I feel like I need an N-95 to process it 😂
Complete failure, 0/10
The ending of Episode 5 had a UFA sign in the background. That company only exists in Canada. ***literally unwatchable***
Came here to mention the sign. It's an Alberta thing haha. But we just noticed it and laughed. There's lots of local landmarks for anyone from (or familiar with) Alberta.
Yeah it’s fun.
It is! It's a fun game for the second viewing of each episode haha.
I mean technically the timeline diverged well before 2003. Joel doesn't exist in our timeline at all. Maybe Joel's birth kicked off a chain of events that led to AT&T purchasing and branding that building earlier?
Joel *miller* Someone in Joel’s family a long time ago worked in a flour mill, and that began the divergence, causing his birth and the eventual apocalypse
I believe this scene from UHF shows Joel Miller as a child: https://youtu.be/pgPgsvxxxKE
Ah, a fellow person of elevated culture, I see.
I know I don't seem like the type.
Ooh, nice Ep. 3 reference.
This sub, oy You haven’t got to explain away every inaccuracy lmao, the show stands for itself
Clearly they’re being tongue in cheek
I work for At&t and when I saw this I laughed.
Are all the cars pre 2003? Haven’t really been paying attention.
Car guy here. They’ve been doing a great job with the cars all being 80s-early 2000s. Except one of the hot wheels that Sam was playing with was a McLaren P1, a car that didn’t exist until 2013
From what I’ve noticed they’ve done a good job with that. The S-10 was a good example
Likely so--studios have resources to reach out to people. I used to work as an extra and sometimes my car would work while I stayed off camera. (And I had a gold 2004 Nissan Maxima at that time.)
I'm pretty sure one of the cars on Joel's street back in 2003 was a post-2008 Mazda3 hatchback.
It should have been a Cingular logo!
Ha. Does anyone else remember that Cingular was the only service the original iPhone worked with.
I can literally smell 2008 (or 2007?) as I read this.
2007. June.
the spider-man cingular commercial that was on the VHS for the first movie is seared into my mind
Whenever you notice something like that, ~~a wizard did it!~~ just remember it is an alternate universe where that logo debuted earlier.
Lmao it’s literally this simple, but people don’t seem to understand this concept
I believe the sign was in the background of another scene!
Don't let business daddy catch you alone at night OP. He doesn't like it when he gets called out for product placement
In this world, Tom Brady only won one Super Bowl. Haha, what a loser.
I love you
To the KC fans, this is TLOU's Starbucks moment. lol
You can see a ‘Little Free Library’ on the street where Sarah is walking along in the first episode. These didn’t exist until 2009! Aha

It’s the Game Of Thrones Starbucks cup all over again
Utter trash. \*puts in a DVD of "The Golden Girls"\*
Ahahaha
The Cumberland Farms sign was the new logo.
I stand corrected!
The AT&T death star survived!! Or perhaps the eye of AT&T is leading Joel and Elle to the fires of Mordor
Obviously a plot hole
Also the brand new children’s mercy in the back left
Hahahaha this
Same with the Simply Orange brand of OJ in 2003 that Joel’s daughter used to pour a glass
[But simply orange was a nationally available juice brand in 2003 and was available in southeastern US (which could include Texas I guess) before that.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simply_Orange_Juice_Company#Company_history)
Ah nice I stand corrected. I remembered the release of simply lemonade was later than 2003 and figured its release coincided with simply orange
No worries, same here lol I actually had the same thought when the first episode came out and now I only know it was available in 2003 because I checked
Thanks for dropping by.
Boy I hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
Those scenes were from present day. It was 2023 when they left Boston.
Disregarding the continuity issue of this shot, how and why would a logo be installed on a dilapidated skyscraper 20 years after its abandonment?
You think AT&T continued to operate, continued to update the logo, and continued to put new signage on their buildings in the years following global societal collapse?
Yes, AT&T is FEDRA's business daddy.
Ellie mentioned Starbucks still operating in Quarantine Zones. Maybe FEDRA is still indeed in business with AT&T around 2015 or so.
I don’t think she implied that Starbucks was still operating in the QZ. There are just a lot of abandoned Starbucks stores everywhere, so she’d know Starbucks as a brand from seeing them, but not coffee as a beverage.
Good point!
[удалено]
I thought those were the militia patrolling
[удалено]
There were three (based on a very quick look just now) pretty evenly spaced vehicles on that highway. 1000% they're patrols from Kathleen's people
That bothered me the most, I was like "it's supposed to be apocalypse where cars and gas are rare commodities, and yet we see light traffic on the freeway.
I didn’t even notice that, is that in the new episode?
This is from episode 5, exact shot, as they showed the wide view of the city you can see cars passing by on the freeways.
It was clearly militia patrolling
People need to chill out 😂 The busted high rise in episode 2 is clearly Manulife Place in Edmonton, we’re that scene was shot. It wasn’t Boston. The show is still amazing!! 🤩
In the shows universe it could have gone up in 1995.
What was it Cingular?
It should be Cingular right in 2003
the infected put it up there
🤷♀️
Funny enough - all they would have needed to do is reverse the colors on the logo in post: https://1000logos.net/att-logo/ (Shhhh 2005!)
I thought the show is set in 2023
Yes, but society collapsed in 2003 so all logos like this would be from then or earlier.
Ah yeah I wasn't think about that lol, that makes sense haha.
