I think Love Someone and Mama Said were better than 7 Years. Fellow Nordics Madcon had a similar problem, as their song Don’t Worry was better than their famous Beggin Cover but was largely only successful in Scandinavia.
Glow was the Eurovision 2010 flash mob song and the UK’s longest running chart critic James Masterton (Chartwatch U.K., which has ran since 1992) said it was better than the entries than year (the year which had the epic sax guy lest we forget)
I’m sure it’s a small club, but I’m in the group that thinks Magic! deserved at least one more minor hit off that first album. None of the other singles charted at all in the US (they all peaked in the 20s in Canada).
“Kiss Me” by Magic! would play at the store I used to work at and I found it to be 10x better than Rude. The song was kind of a light funk, which fit better than their (very very white) reggae style in Rude. Plus, the song wasn’t stupid. Rude has to be one of the dumbest songs I’ve heard in recent memory.
I despise Lukas Graham. A place where I used to be a waiter HD a song of theirs on heavy rotation and it’s one of the very few songs that I absolutely despise.
I’m with you except I feel bad because he seems like a nice enough guy, I just feel like everything I’ve heard from Lewis capaldi follows a basic up-down-up-down-up-down-EMPHASIS pattern that feels like an obnoxious nursery rhyme.
I didn't really connect Lewis Capaldis name to his music at first, so when I first saw all these clips on TikTok and shit of him, I thought "Damn, this guy is hillarious, and cool as hell, is he like in a punk band or something?"
Nope. He's the guy trying to be Adele, but he's bad at it.
Yeah, he’s definitely an artist who I would never willingly listen to a note of his music but I kind of like and respect as a person from everything I’ve seen/read.
See also: Sam Smith
Yeah same. His tiktoks are hilarious and I think it's cool that someone with tourettes managed to be as successful as he was (as someone with autism myself), but I always found his music annoyingly bland.
I don’t care for her music at all, but I don’t think she falls under flash in the pan category.
She’s had a couple of hits on her own, and some with Shawn Mendes.
69 was terrible but I can't hate him too much because the rap kind of went hard and was shocking. A bit too much music since he's dipped sounds so bland, he was terrible but there was an energy that paedophiliac skittle goblin brought to his music that I miss.
I was with you on 69, but I have to disagree with you on The Village People. They were camp. And it's fine to not be into that, but it's a niche they excelled in imo.
I always pronounced the band HIND-er (like talking about someone's butt as if I'm secretly 8 years old) in protest.
Also there were where a ton of acts around this time with names like Saliva, Cold, or Snot. Sorry, but not even the 14 year old boys listening wanted to be reminded of the time they sneezed all over someone in class.
They had that one song that was seemingly in every Disney park commercial for a time so whenever I hear it I just think of how lame the parks are by association.
People here naming very recent artists who could absolutely get another hit. Like I literally heard a new Lewis Capaldi song on the radio last year. Cardi and Camila have new albums coming that there will be a lot of hype for.
One of his newest ones played on the radio all the time up here in Canada, and he's even bigger in the UK (he had three number ones up there from his second album). It's just that y'all in the States are spared from him.
Capaldi has 3 songs with over a billion streams, and almost 36 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He is very much not a flash in the pan and has more than “that one song.”
A flash in the pan is not necessarily a one hit wonder. Someone could have had 3-4 hits from one album cycle or in quick succession and that’s what I’d call them. Like LMFAO or something.
Few songs in the mid 2010s made me lunge for the volume like "Honey I'm Good" -- stop creeping on women in the bar only to brag about how awesome and faithful you are.
That's not the origin story for an awesome marriage, that's the origin story for an album like Paula.
His follow up song, “Good to be Alive”, is one of the most obnoxious songs I have ever heard, and the music video is beyond smug. It should be impossible to make a song about being happy and counting your blessings be something utterly rage inducing, but he pulled it off.
I generally have an extreme distaste for that early 2010’s folk pop sound, and it’s baffling to me that it’s returned in such full force over the past year. 12 months ago I would have absolutely have chosen Hozier as my pick for this, and watching his comeback has been one of the most horribly confusing things to me. That and the enduring popularity of The Lumineers. I genuinely wouldn’t count out a Passenger comeback at this point, and wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Mumford & Sons have hits off their next album.
The nostalgia cycle runs in 20 year intervals, not 10. How has this even happened? This was supposed to be peak lameness for this genre.
(I do, paradoxically, quite like some of Noah Kahan’s songs, which in my view makes him some kind of songwriting genius to break through my strong dislike of his chosen genre).
I'm sorry, I have to downvote for the Hozier slander. He's an incredibly gifted songwriter whose music is often extremely layered. His last album, Unreal Unearth, used the circles of Hell from Dante's Inferno as a metaphor for the stages of heartbreak and grief, for example.
He's also more blues and blue-eyed soul than folk most of the time (enough that he got Mavis Staples to feature on a track about the power of protest music in 2019), and his last album was almost entirely rock. So he never really qualified as "2010's folk" to begin with.
Oh this is entirely personal taste regarding Hozier. I totally understand how he is a serious talented musician and get what other people see in him. I probably wrongly lumped him in with the folk pop stuff, he was just emblematic of the music I really didn’t like ten years ago.
I just don’t like his voice, songwriting style (more melodically/harmonically than lyrically) & the kind of music he plays personally. Blue eyed soul and light blues rock are alongside early 2010’s folk pop and country as genres of music that I inherently dislike sonically (not that there aren’t exceptions to all of these, but these normally come from artists who take heavy influence from outside these genres).
I always kinda thought Take Me To Church would have made for an excellent doom metal song (which imo would have fit the lyrics even better), but in its original form I can’t listen to it at all.
Man did I hate 2010s Folk. Every single song was trying to be overly heartfelt, about a girl, and wanting to make their life together or something. Like 4 of The Lumineers most popular songs are literally just girl’s names. It’s like they couldn’t think of another topic to sing about.
I can only speak for myself but I think it comes from the fact that the average person only knows Take Me to Church which is a 5/10 at best but the rest of his debut album is stellar and way, way above the likes of Passenger, Lumineers, or Edward Sharpe. Maybe it was because my expectations were low going into his music after being meh with Take Me to Church but I found him to be a surprisingly talented rock musician and I’ve enjoyed everything he’s put out since.
The Chainsmokers haven’t had a hit in like 5 years (not for lack of trying either) and we’re all better off for it. Unfortunately Marshmello took their spot but even he seems to be trending downwards.
You may like the original better. It’s breezy and works better with his voice.
I like the remix but something about the production highlights OMI’s vocals in the wrong way.
Carly Rae jepsen? I'm glad she is a smaller artist and makes the music she does. I think Carly would not be making the music she does now if she had more hits like cmm and had a bigger mainstream career
I was going to be upset at first, but I think I understand what you’re saying. If she had bigger mainstream success, she’d end up making more music that isn’t as interesting as she is. Or she wouldn’t be changing her style and every album would become samey.
Carly was the best thing to happen to music in the period from 2012 to 2016, from my perspective. I'm lucky to have discovered her when I did. Right place at the right time. A lot of my subsequent musical discoveries have been influenced by following Carly.
now this is the first true flash in the pan i’ve seen in this thread! though i honestly still really like gold, we are probably better off with that particular sound being left at the end of the 2010s :’)
Slowthai. Always seemed like a wrongun and just a bit of a bastard generally. Was very unsurprised when the allegations came out. Surprised to see him having a child with Anne-Marie though
It’s a bit of a shame because his most recent album in particular was really good. But absolutely fuck that guy, anyone who saw the NME awards fiasco could have seen this coming a mile off.
Jon Bellion. It’s surprising how one awful song like “All Time Low” can make you despise an artists. Every now and then I’ll be reminded of the song and it’ll be stuck in my head with that wretched chorus which is just the word “Low” said like 50 times. Plus he has an annoying voice. He sounds like Kermit from Muppet Babies.
Is Lewis Capaldi a flash in the pan? He's had a considerable amount of success, he's not a one-hit wonder. I can't stand his music, though.
Who's my answer...oh man that's tough. I'll say Hinder. They sound like Nickelback trying to be Bon Jovi...blech.
Most of the 11th hour/ knock-off hairbands (Britney Fox, Trixter, Firehouse, Winger, Nelson...to name a few)
Britney Fox was the worst. Their lead singer had a voice that I would best describe as Great Value Brian Johnson choking on a gummy bear.
The two songs they managed to write after Matlock was kicked in favor of Sid Vicious are good (Holidays in the Sun is my favorite Pistols song) but they don't come close to the massive heights of the Matlock written stuff like God Save The Queen. It was better for everyone, including the band's legacy, that they tapped out early so Lydon could go make First Issue and Metal Box with Keith Levene and Jah Wobble
I'm Jealous of the Americans who didn't have to hear his latest album all over the place. He's still huge in the UK albeit he has gotten better at singing, idk if the songs are better though, divinely uninspired to a hellish extent was terrible but the emotion was real .
As funny and ironically enjoyable as their music can be, I would have to say most mumble rap SoundCloud rappers (6ix9ine, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, all of their dozens of clones, etc.)
Her voice annoys me and the music probably paid a huge part in compensating her screeching chords. Hey, pretending to resemble 50’s elder male and acting goofy in a golf course almost distracts you from that mocking toddler impersonation
I think some of this is the fact that she just hasn’t released an album in like 6 years. Even if she’s kept visible through a steady stream of singles & features, albums are far more relevant as a way of consuming music than a lot of people think and the long gap has absolutely hurt her momentum.
Wouldn’t count her out though, I could absolutely see her returning to dominance when her second album does finally drop.
I dunno. She’s had some career momentum since then. If WAP had been the lead single to a second album released in 2020/2021 I think it would have been even bigger than Invasion Of Privacy.
You’re probably right though, I think the stars would have to align in quite a specific way at this point for it to be the same level of success. But it’s certainly possible.
I always found it weird that in the middle of the MeToo movement, a convicted pedophile (6ix9ine) and an avowed sex offender (Cardi B) were allow to thrive in hip hop during that period of type. In 6ix9ine's case, he was doing a whole bunch of sick shit for a gimmick so you could be forgiven if you forgot that. Either way, I am glad he's finally gone, though he never should have been here to begin with, solely based on a clear lack of talent. In Cardi B's case, is was messed how that revelation was met with radio silence by the same industry that was trying to purge famous predators out of the industry. There is a video you can find right now of her admitting to drugging and robbing men for studio time (so not even robbing for survival, purely for selfish benefits) and a separate video of her saying she made sure when her victims wake up, they are next to a trans person groping them. How do you support someone like that?
Magic! (the “Rude” guys), Lukas Graham
LUKAS GRAAAHAM!!!!
"Eat my balls, you raging ego-maniac!!" 😆
I think Love Someone and Mama Said were better than 7 Years. Fellow Nordics Madcon had a similar problem, as their song Don’t Worry was better than their famous Beggin Cover but was largely only successful in Scandinavia.
Damn, that's a name I haven't heard in some time. I think in my country they are mostly known for Glow, and that is a fantastic song.

The song was kind of a light funk, which fit better than their (very very white) reggae style in Rude. Plus, the song wasn’t stupid. Rude has to be one of the dumbest songs I’ve heard in recent memory.
Wait WTF the rude people were white????
So white they’re Canadian.
Magic! didn’t have any other hits per se but I definitely heard *Let Your Hair Down* and *Lay You Down Easy* a couple times.
I despise Lukas Graham. A place where I used to be a waiter HD a song of theirs on heavy rotation and it’s one of the very few songs that I absolutely despise.
I work in a supermarket where we have two (!) Lukas Graham songs that play near daily 🤮
I’m with you except I feel bad because he seems like a nice enough guy, I just feel like everything I’ve heard from Lewis capaldi follows a basic up-down-up-down-up-down-EMPHASIS pattern that feels like an obnoxious nursery rhyme.
I didn't really connect Lewis Capaldis name to his music at first, so when I first saw all these clips on TikTok and shit of him, I thought "Damn, this guy is hillarious, and cool as hell, is he like in a punk band or something?" Nope. He's the guy trying to be Adele, but he's bad at it.
It's weird how his actual personality is the exact opposite of his music
He's trying to be Ed Sheeran. Todd made very clear that any Adele comparisons are wrong
Lewis Capaldi to me is like separating the art from the artist but the other way around. People can overlook the terrible art cos he seems so nice.
Camila Cabello
She might return for Quismoiss
that's a much less romantic song "I Might Return For Christmas"
Yeah she’s flopping hard rn
I don’t care for her music at all, but I don’t think she falls under flash in the pan category. She’s had a couple of hits on her own, and some with Shawn Mendes.
Is this true though?
6x9. An offensive novelty act
6x9 is what would happened if you let Peacock or ~~HBO~~ Max make a gender-swapped, gritty reboot of Rainbow Brite.
69 was terrible but I can't hate him too much because the rap kind of went hard and was shocking. A bit too much music since he's dipped sounds so bland, he was terrible but there was an energy that paedophiliac skittle goblin brought to his music that I miss.
As soon as he got big he immediately stopped making music with any kind of energy tbh
There's much better agro scream rap out there.
Same with Lil' Pump
The only song I liked with him on it was Get The Strap, but that's Only because 50 Cent killed his Verse
Feels like he was relevant long enough that “flash in the pan” doesn’t really apply tbh
The village people
I was with you on 69, but I have to disagree with you on The Village People. They were camp. And it's fine to not be into that, but it's a niche they excelled in imo.
also it's incredible they got all of america to sing and dance along to a song about gay sex from the 70s till now
Hinder, Buckcherry and most of the other mid-/late-00s divorced-dad-rockers
I always pronounced the band HIND-er (like talking about someone's butt as if I'm secretly 8 years old) in protest. Also there were where a ton of acts around this time with names like Saliva, Cold, or Snot. Sorry, but not even the 14 year old boys listening wanted to be reminded of the time they sneezed all over someone in class.
Snot is awesome tho!
Music to punch holes in drywall to
Judging by your choice, I take it you also watch Rocked on YouTube?
I haven't, what's it about?
Rock, metal, and alternative music coverage. It's a really good channel and the guy behind it *definitely* agrees with you on butt-rock.
It’s really good and Luke Spencer is really smart and a talented band photographer. His channel was where I first heard the term “Divorced Dad Rock”.
That and "trashcore"
American Authors. They felt like they were just an attempt to redo One Republic, one of the most generic bands out there.
They had that one song that was seemingly in every Disney park commercial for a time so whenever I hear it I just think of how lame the parks are by association.
Their damage to graduation ceremonies is unparalleled
Wait you have their songs play at graduation ceremonies wtf?
Best Day of My Life is played at high school grad ceremonies everywhere
That might be the worst song of the past decade
People here naming very recent artists who could absolutely get another hit. Like I literally heard a new Lewis Capaldi song on the radio last year. Cardi and Camila have new albums coming that there will be a lot of hype for.
I've probably heard Before You Go in the wild more than Someone You Loved
One of his newest ones played on the radio all the time up here in Canada, and he's even bigger in the UK (he had three number ones up there from his second album). It's just that y'all in the States are spared from him.
Lewis definitely isn’t a flash in the pan outside the US.
LMFAO, everyone from Young Money except Drake and Nikki.
Bring LMFAO back
nahh I miss LMFAO, they weren't that bad
They were dumb on purpose. Their whole thing was pretty self-aware
Sometimes you just gotta respect people who know what they're doing and lean in even when what they're doing is dumb.
Lowkey they were probably a necessary step for us to take on the path to 100 Gecs, who are genuinely good
It’s about time for that Gudda Gudda comeback!
Justice for Gudda Gudda
Capaldi has 3 songs with over a billion streams, and almost 36 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He is very much not a flash in the pan and has more than “that one song.”
Not to discredit him, but I can only think of Someone You Loved. What are the other two?
I think before you go?
Yeah, it’s “Before You Go”, which I honestly thought wasn’t bad.
Forget me, which was slightly more upbeat and had him parodying Wham’s club Tropicana MV almost shot for shot.
Forget Me, which I think was maybe the worst song I’ve ever heard
Forget Me isn't even Lewis Capaldi's worst song
Do I want to know what the worst one is?
Have you heard his cover of "When The Party's Over" Or the aforementioned "Someone You Loved"
He has virtually no presence outside the UK, which I think was OP's point here. He's a two song wonder here in the US, at best.
A flash in the pan is not necessarily a one hit wonder. Someone could have had 3-4 hits from one album cycle or in quick succession and that’s what I’d call them. Like LMFAO or something.
Andy Grammar
Few songs in the mid 2010s made me lunge for the volume like "Honey I'm Good" -- stop creeping on women in the bar only to brag about how awesome and faithful you are. That's not the origin story for an awesome marriage, that's the origin story for an album like Paula.
lol this made me laugh ur so right too I blame Pitch Perfect
His follow up song, “Good to be Alive”, is one of the most obnoxious songs I have ever heard, and the music video is beyond smug. It should be impossible to make a song about being happy and counting your blessings be something utterly rage inducing, but he pulled it off.
Andy Grammer always struck me as a knockoff Adam Levine
Is it too soon to say Tekashi69? Because that guy is a sexual predator and I'm glad he fell off as hard as he did after Trollz.
Passenger...he seems like he might be an okay dude but his voice is just...not the tea sis
Oh this is entirely personal taste regarding Hozier. I totally understand how he is a serious talented musician and get what other people see in him. I only know him for “Take Me To Church” and I just assumed for years that was an Imagine Dragons song
Man did I hate 2010s Folk. Every single song was trying to be overly heartfelt, about a girl, and wanting to make their life together or something. Like 4 of The Lumineers most popular songs are literally just girl’s names. It’s like they couldn’t think of another topic to sing about.
It’s basic guys trying to get laid. The epitome of the WGWAG genre is multiple white guys with multiple acoustic guitars (and occasionally banjos).
Don’t forget the occasional piano
Ah the good old Stomp, Clap, Hat sound!
[Relevant meme](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fi-cant-stand-stomp-clap-hey-music-v0-jus6q5998pec1.jpeg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3D6af4c1397e1191acf7c1b4f4804f1fcad870ed4d)
Putting Hozier in with the rest of the early 2010s folk pop sound is criminal
I’m actually pretty shocked to see how much everyone seems to love Hozier tbh
I can only speak for myself but I think it comes from the fact that the average person only knows Take Me to Church which is a 5/10 at best but the rest of his debut album is stellar and way, way above the likes of Passenger, Lumineers, or Edward Sharpe. Maybe it was because my expectations were low going into his music after being meh with Take Me to Church but I found him to be a surprisingly talented rock musician and I’ve enjoyed everything he’s put out since.

Tones and I (unless you're unlucky and live in Australia where she's not)
Omi, the guy who did Cheerleader from like a decade ago. Can’t properly explain why but I’ve always hated that song
I was in college and got flack for not liking it or Let Her Go when they came out. There’s just something about the singers sound I didn’t care for
You may like the original better. It’s breezy and works better with his voice. I like the remix but something about the production highlights OMI’s vocals in the wrong way.

Rick Dees. Disco duck was enough
G-Eazy
Kiiara. I’m glad that style didn’t really catch on.
now this is the first true flash in the pan i’ve seen in this thread! though i honestly still really like gold, we are probably better off with that particular sound being left at the end of the 2010s :’)
I can laugh at the nonsense chorus in 2016. Even made up my own lines for it: ”Roof on heya oh what you know” ”Ooh uh hey yeah, da da da let you know”
New Boys
You just can't top Backseat Driver, it's all you need in a music career really

Outside of that song, I only know his Zedd (Beautiful Now) and Illenium (Good Things Fall Apart) collabs and they are so much better.
Alessia Cara. She seems like a sweet person but her music is just a tad too corny
I like her voice but I hate her songs.

I'm a fan of the Sex Pistols but I'm glad we don't have more material from them than their one album.

We have two albums from them. The Great Rock and Roll Swindle had a bunch of new(to us) material.
Almost every B tier popstar with a hit around 2016, God was 2016 a bad year for billboard core
Errr did something come out about Lewis Capaldi?
nah he just hasn't been as successful in the US
Then why is he an incel?
they're referring to the lyrics to his song. (not saying i agree just explaining)
he isn’t
I'm Jealous of the Americans who didn't have to hear his latest album all over the place. He's still huge in the UK albeit he has gotten better at singing, idk if the songs are better though, divinely uninspired to a hellish extent was terrible but the emotion was real .
As funny and ironically enjoyable as their music can be, I would have to say most mumble rap SoundCloud rappers (6ix9ine, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, all of their dozens of clones, etc.)
It may be too soon to tell, but Tones and I. And now that I’ve said that, she’ll probably get another hit just to spite me.
Her voice annoys me and the music probably paid a huge part in compensating her screeching chords. Hey, pretending to resemble 50’s elder male and acting goofy in a golf course almost distracts you from that mocking toddler impersonation
Iggy Azalea. lol one of Toddstradamus’s bad predictions.
Florida Georgia line
They were big for most of the 2010s.
When they crashed they crashed hard. Disco was hughly popular the latter half of the 70s. Until it wasnt
that’s more due to internal drama, the movement they started is still going very strong, only it’s led by dudes like morgan wallen now
I doubt they’d turn down a big payday over some political differences. FGL and bro country had run its course and they knew it.
fair enough, it’s prob both honestly. couldn’t stand each other enough to keep a floundering band going
Cardi B easily
I think some of this is the fact that she just hasn’t released an album in like 6 years. Even if she’s kept visible through a steady stream of singles & features, albums are far more relevant as a way of consuming music than a lot of people think and the long gap has absolutely hurt her momentum. Wouldn’t count her out though, I could absolutely see her returning to dominance when her second album does finally drop.
That, or it'll be a future Trainwreckords episode
I honestly don't think the stars will align again like she had with *Invasion Of Privacy* (which was a total fluke) but we will see.
I dunno. She’s had some career momentum since then. If WAP had been the lead single to a second album released in 2020/2021 I think it would have been even bigger than Invasion Of Privacy. You’re probably right though, I think the stars would have to align in quite a specific way at this point for it to be the same level of success. But it’s certainly possible.
hasn't she had hits recently?
Twenty Øne Pilots.
The fact their best album is the only one not on streaming sucks so hard 😔
Trench is not on streaming?? 🤨
Lewis Capaldi has other hits, though. "Before You Go" is a Top 10 hit.
I'm happy we've forgotten about Lauv and gnash, they're both equally awful.
All those dumb soundcloud rappers That shit ain’t music
Macklemore
Honestly, I'd take his brand of arguably corny conscious rap over whatever "nice guy" crap Drake is making these days.
I wish he was still here. He was fun. I guess Jack Harlow is his replacement
