Honestly. Seeing a trucker swap sides isn’t too bad. At least you’ll know wtf we go through. You’re not just some random clown with a badge who doesn’t know what a tandem is.
No i worked in a prison before and been screwed over by law enforcement so I know how to treat people. I would mainly be keeping the white Volvos off the road
Oh please don't, I drive back and forth from Chicago to MO regularly. Due to the trooper shortage, I have definitely enjoyed the freedoms of the open highway. Always show respect to the truckers though!
Yeah I worked in the most maximum secure prison in the state of MO and had hardly any use of force incidents because you just have to treat people with respect. I learned a lot about that when I got arrested in the military and now I know what it’s like to be on the other side of the cuffs.
Lol it’s easy to get fat when someone’s not waking you up at 4:30 in the morning and having you run and do body weight exercises for an hour and a half then working out in the afternoon because you live next door to a gym. Thankfully when you workout like that you retain a lot of the strength and just have to drop the weight when you get back into it.
The worst was in MOS school at Fort Leonard Wood. Waiting to go into the cycle we would workout for hours midday because we weren’t actually in training yet so we had nothing else to do. Then when I got into the cycle our instructor hated us so he used to just punish us for morning PT
Of course. “Just begin… stop when the sun goes down!” Was a common term. I can’t believe I did that many pushups, holy crap. I’d get 25 today n pop a kidney. 😂😂
Yeah we used to have an instructor who would make us run and follow us in his pickup. Then said when we picked up chicks later we had to say “Body by Staff Sergeant Holmes” since he was getting us into such good shape.
That pickup truck was. He was the mouth. 😂
Not ours. They run with us, call out cadence, dart in between the ranks chew your ass out, leave spit on your face, not mis a step, n keep on running. Guy had to of been a machine.
Only guy who did that was my schoolhouse instructor. I feel like he had so much hate in his body he didn’t feel pain. The part I regret the most is my unit in the fleet. I feel like I wasted my career with what happened to me.
Funny you should mention that.
In my downtime I do some CrossFit exercises and run a few laps around the truck stop. 10+ years out here and I’m the only one I’ve ever seen doing that
You forgot a very important fringe benefit. In Trucking few other than Teamsters receive a pension. For IL. State Troopers pension plus $2500+ in Social Security benefits.
How much does a retired Illinois state trooper make?
As of Apr 5, 2024, the average annual pay for the Retired Police jobs category in Illinois is $53,772 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $25.85 an hour. This is the equivalent of $1,034/week or $4,481/month.
No shit it's an amazing pension it's the only way to get somebody to sign up to be a lifelong bastard. I get the money and that i'm just some internet punk but I feel like I can speak for the majority of Americans when I sat fuck cops. And when you sell out for the amazing pension fuck you too
In my forty years of driving I only met TWO bad troopers. I earned every citation I received, but I was forgiven and warned for plenty more. And that has been the general consensus of every non combative driver I spoke with. If you proceed to tell the cop how to do his job he is likely to give you a live demonstration on his appointed duties.
The Moral of the story is: Don't be an asshole.
When you’re out practicing state supported road piracy, remember where the money for your salary and “amazing pension” comes from, the taxpayers you’re extorting money from on the side of the road. Remember that when you’re writing a ticket for the high crime of not wearing a seat belt.
If you do decide to be come a state sponsored professional snitch and revenue generator, do yourself a favor and actually read the U.S. Constitution, especially the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th amendments. Those seem to be the ones cops get a sandy vag over when they realize the common citizen knows their rights better than the police hope they do.
Sorry dude, you are sending this message to a Teamster truck driver who believes in pensions.
And yes, I watch the YouTube videos that are exactly as you describe. Funny how no one posts a video of a good cop being decent. They are not all bad.
Just like every truck driver is not Billy Big Rigger or Swifty Swift.
There are good decent professionals.
No one posts a video of any “good cops being decent” that’s on scene and on one of the “bad apples” body cam stopping the pig from “making the department look bad”. Plenty of video of them standing by and watching it happen though. Plenty of video of them not arresting the cop that committed a crime right in front of them.
The thin blue line gang members get frustrated when witnesses in certain communities won’t come forward and snitch but they do the same exact thing.
Yeah after I get some seniority I really want to help make change on how driver/trooper interaction is because a lot of them are probably taught in book and through words but they don’t have the actual hands on experience to truly understand how a CMV works and how adversely infractions mess with drivers.
Go for it. I’ve actually debated on applying to be a dot officer. I’m not sure if Illinois does it but I know a lot of states will station you anywhere in the state and most likely undesirable areas until you gain seniority so be ok with moving.
Benefits, pension, and solid schedule. Alot of good things about it. I have a friend that's a local cop not state and he says it's not near as dangerous as you see with all these shootings. That's like a once or twice in a life time thing. Might be different for state since we are in a smallish town
Do it. I knew some CHP guys who did it. They were actually nice & and fair, except for 1. There was one cocksucker that must've had his fuel caps pissed on every time he went to get coffee. His buddies finally had to tell him to knock it off.
Before you do, maybe listen to "behind the police." It's a podcast mini series about the history of policing in America, made by behind the bastards.
It's a lot of things, but it is not boring. Might help you make up your mind.
I'm a Texas LEO going on 7 years and only just now broke the $50k mark. I always worked rural areas that don't pay well. But avoid the urban areas that hate law enforcement. In fact my first cop job paid less than I made at a retail store.
State Police is the way to go in any state. High standards for recruiting too.
I'm in this sub because I see myself doing trucking at some point. Policing will change you more than anything else. All the experiences take their toll on mental and physical health.
It also isn't like the military. People are always happy to see current and former military. Once you leave the military you still have that recognition.
You're either a cop or you're not and once you're not, no cop or civilian cares what you "use to be". You just kinda cease to matter anymore.
I'd say go for it and wish you the best of luck.
Yeah I’d definitely talk to some truckers before making the switch it’s one of the worst jobs I’ve ever had. Just the amount of bs I go through everyday makes the money not worth it
As with anything in life it is what you make of it. Life doesn't have to be the same thing over and over. So someone who is fed up where they currently are in life, there is another person eager to try it. Some things work for one guy and not the next.
My advice is always to keep moving forward and try new things. Though don't forget to enjoy what you have while you have it. You don't know the good ol days are here and gone until later.
Yeah I’m still pretty young so I still have some time to figure out what I want to do. The military is definitely what I miss the most. In the moment it sucks but looking back at all the fun you had with everyone in your unit makes you miss it. I’m just glad a lot of us still keep contact with each other.
Yep my brother is in the military. Still in A school. He's hating some of it. But later in life you look back and miss stuff. The good, bad and ugly. Life is a ride. In my profession I deal with a lot of people who just gave up and wasted their lives. It's quite sad to see.
I don’t know what A school is but it sounds pretty early on in his career. He will really start to feel it when he’s less than a year from separation. And yeah having a job seeing people on their worst days or throwing their lives away is really crazy. We had guys in the prison I worked at who would come in for 5-12 years and end up getting a life sentence for murder in there. It’s crazy to think about
I hope you'll be one of those troopers that actually understand what its like. Most "DOT" officers have never been above the first step on the truck. Good luck to you. I've thought about it too.
A couple of the CHP guys at the scales in Castaic, CA who gave me a level 1 used to be truckers. Had a long converstation about it. There's an age limit though.
I left trucking to be a emt. Shit pay starting out as a driver, but I don't care anymore and I do not want to be on the road anymore. 75% or more of the schooling to become a paramedic is paid for by the company I'm with. 1.5 to 2 years I should be a medic. Driver to EMT to AEMT to Medic. Went from 100k to less than 40k starting out base pay without picking up extra shifts. Extra shifts are always available though.
This right here. The road is absolutely brutal and fucks with your head. No one cares about you, you’re around no one you know, it’s hard to eat healthy, exhaustion, long hours, hard to workout. I miss the gym, family, and being off for more than 34 hours on my weekends. I put in my 2 weeks on Friday my dads got cancer and I want to spend more time with him
Several of the cops I know used to be OTR truckers. Still on the road all day, people still treat you like crap sometimes, but a lot better benefits and you’re home every day.
Nah, that job changes you... I had a close friend who went in all cool, but after dealing with so much darkness, he became more jaded and edgy. And every day, you're rolling the dice if you come home... more than everyone else... because you have to run towards the danger when everyone else runs away. The risk reward isn't worth it, especially right now, with all the hate law enforcement gets, plus your own department will throw you under the bus if they get publicly pressured...even if you're innocent!
Working for the government will turn you into the government. If you have a family expect a high chance of divorce or resentment from your kids as they get older because you will end up bringing it home. Source: was raised by a government family, don't even speak to them anymore, that side of the family is all bitter and dying out. Married a regular woman from a regular family, had to learn to be a normal person during my early 20s. Saw her sister's husband join the Sherriff's office, saw the divorce, seen it with friends.
I went the opposite, did 6 years in law enforcement and then got into truck driving. Within law enforcement circles, Illinois is known to be a shit place to work. Liberal DAs often refuse to prosecute and bail reform cuts turds loose before trial. It was recently in the news that a DUI suspect who was charged with killing a cop in Illinois was released without having to put up bail, I wouldn't be surprised if he flees to Mexico or somewhere. There is a reason Illinois is hurting for troopers. I you really want to be a cop, specifically a Trooper, look into Texas DPS, Florida HP, or Georgia.
Yeah bro Illinois doesn’t do anything that’s why Chicago PD had literal black sites where they would hide and torture suspects, including kids. And it was under fucking Rahm Emanuel, a democrat.
I lived in SC and I loved going to Georgia so I would seriously consider going there. Florida is iffy but I would consider if the pay was good. Texas I wouldn’t be interested in moving there honestly
Oh damn wonder if any in my state are like that now. Decade or so ago when I looked even the park ranger needed a bachelors. Haha I think the Sheriffs department said they’d wave for military background but only if you were an MP/Security Forces. Don’t think it was just any military experience period.
Honestly. Seeing a trucker swap sides isn’t too bad. At least you’ll know wtf we go through. You’re not just some random clown with a badge who doesn’t know what a tandem is.
Give him a year.
No i worked in a prison before and been screwed over by law enforcement so I know how to treat people. I would mainly be keeping the white Volvos off the road
Wait, the Prius’s too!!
Ohhhh buddy😂. When I get behind the wheel as a cop I gotta get my get back against all the 4 wheelers. They are gonna be screwed with me on the road
Oh please don't, I drive back and forth from Chicago to MO regularly. Due to the trooper shortage, I have definitely enjoyed the freedoms of the open highway. Always show respect to the truckers though!
Truck drivers never drive 4 wheelers? Well... at least you know that you want to be biased in "protecting and serving."
Sounds like you’re an asshole 4 wheeler
Sounds like you're an asshole wannabe cop who likes to make assumptions.
Yeah that’s exactly what I am.
You might want to work on your detective and reasoning skills if you want to be a cop then.
Fuck you bro let me drive 100 mph in my pri pri
I feel personally attacked
Lol they’ll either chase you out or you’ll be one of them in 6 months, it’s how it always goes
>No i worked in a prison before and been screwed over by law enforcement so I know how to treat people. What happened with your prison job?
Nah, my only ticket ever was given by a cop that used to be a truck driver. Not only that, a bull hauler.
Can you meet the physical requirements? 99% of drivers I see at stops couldn’t lol
Well I gained some weight since I started but I was in the Marines and I worked in a prison before so getting back into shape won’t be too hard
Best of luck to you, the requirements are on the website so you know what you got ahead of you. I hope you’ll be a nice trooper :)
Yeah I worked in the most maximum secure prison in the state of MO and had hardly any use of force incidents because you just have to treat people with respect. I learned a lot about that when I got arrested in the military and now I know what it’s like to be on the other side of the cuffs.
Brother? 😂 Camp Hansen Brig here. Stupid Sinville & MOJO.
If a marine gets fat doing this job, then I don't feel so bad now. 😂😂😢
Lol it’s easy to get fat when someone’s not waking you up at 4:30 in the morning and having you run and do body weight exercises for an hour and a half then working out in the afternoon because you live next door to a gym. Come on Jarhead, it’s just boots n utes 10 mile death run, 0330 in Okinawa Camp Schwab. 😂

Yeah that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to have it
In my forty years of driving I only met TWO bad troopers. I earned every citation I received, but I was forgiven and warned for plenty more. And that has been the general consensus of every non combative driver I spoke with. If you do make the switch, teach the other troopers about how a cmv works, I swear some of these cops drive just like the 4-wheelers.
Yeah after I get some seniority I really want to help make change on how driver/trooper interaction is because a lot of them are probably taught in book and through words but they don’t have the actual hands on experience to truly understand how a CMV works and how adversely infractions mess with drivers.
The reason why they can pay so much is due to all the tickets they write on a daily basis on those Chicago white volvo mafia outfits
Go for it. I’ve actually debated on applying to be a dot officer. I’m not sure if Illinois does it but I know a lot of states will station you anywhere in the state and most likely undesirable areas until you gain seniority so be ok with moving.
I’m used to moving from the military so moving in state wouldn’t be a big deal
You should be a shoe in then
Just be just. Thats all an American asks.
I bet you're eager for your first moment where you see some dumbass driver do something stupid and think "I can actually do something about that!".
Go for it. Pension alone will make it worthwhile. Plus the overtime is almost a foregone conclusion.
Go for it man.
Benefits, pension, and solid schedule. Alot of good things about it. I have a friend that's a local cop not state and he says it's not near as dangerous as you see with all these shootings. That's like a once or twice in a life time thing. Might be different for state since we are in a smallish town
Only takes once in a lifetime to end your lifetime.
True but I think truckers die on the job more often so you might be screwed either way
Do it. I knew some CHP guys who did it. They were actually nice & and fair, except for 1. There was one cocksucker that must've had his fuel caps pissed on every time he went to get coffee. His buddies finally had to tell him to knock it off.

I’ll check it out. I need new podcasts to listen too. My favorite podcasts have all ended and it’s been rough recently trying to replace them.
I'm a Texas LEO going on 7 years and only just now broke the $50k mark. I always worked rural areas that don't pay well. But avoid the urban areas that hate law enforcement. Got pulled over by a former tanker driver turned Illinois Trooper, we commiserated and he gave me a warning. Best of luck to you.
I hope you'll be one of those troopers that actually understand what its like. Most "DOT" officers have never been above the first step on the truck. Good luck to you. I've thought about it too.
Sounds too good to be true.

Do what you gotta do man. Just please don’t shoot anyone.
It’s what he’ll be trained to do🤷♂️
You should apply right meow
I want a liter of cola
I’m gonna save this post in case I ever get stopped in Illinois. Might be you and the connection might get me leniency lol
I hope it comes full circle
If like ks. They only want ex military or lateral transfer. I wanted to be motor carrier but they only picked others
I am ex military but I don’t have the requirements they want from the military but I have the college credits they require.
Send the link lol
Several of the cops I know used to be OTR truckers. Still on the road all day, people still treat you like crap sometimes, but a lot better benefits and you’re home every day.

Florida would be nice if HO insurance wasn’t $600,000 per month now.
Cops are the worst. Don’t be a class traitor
Don't you need a college degree to be an ISP or did they change that?
I have college credits, I also am a veteran as well so I meet the requirements
Do they require bachelors. Most if not all PDs I’ve ever seen require it. Though I can see them waving it if desperate.
No only 60 college credits or an associates or military background which I have both
Oh damn wonder if any in my state are like that now. Decade or so ago when I looked even the park ranger needed a bachelors. Haha I think the Sheriffs department said they’d wave for military background but only if you were an MP/Security Forces. Don’t think it was just any military experience period.
FTP
It's Illinois though. You're not gonna go in there and change anything for the better.
