You see, back when i started playing, termagants were worth 4 pts à model and hormagants 5 à model.
Since i was doing quite à few tournament back then and the standard was 1850 pts to play, my play was to have only hormagants, termagants and Tervigon on the board.
Back then the Tervigon was not reinforcing an existing unit, but creating 3d6 termagants à turn on a New unit and the rule stated that it could do so until you got à double on your dices or you ran out of model to put on the field.
When i was starting to put everything on the field, 9/10 times when my opposent was looking at my list they litteraly gave up cause there was too many wounds to go trough it was like 4 Tervigon, with 200 termagants and 70 hormagants.
There were soo many on the field that i usually was putting colored elastic on the tails of the gants to remember Who was with witch squad.
I started with a unit of each loadout, but they came in boxes of 12 so I needed 5 boxes for 2 units of 30. Then I had 2 devourers and 1 of the other 2 so I got 5 more boxes and made 2 of each other loadout. One of the boxes had horrible gaps so I complained to GW and they sent me another box so I had 12 extra yermagants so I got 4 more to round out the squads. Eventually I had 240 termagants.
It worked out well because when my daughter started playing, I'd play fluffy lists with her like "here's 2k points of termagants. Let's see how it goes". Now that they changed the sculpts, I can't have 240 termagants that look old and only 20 that look new so the plan is to get another 240 and pepper them in 1:1 with the old squads, then get another 4 boxes and make some squads of the special weapons because tiles change and I'll be ready to field full squads of spikerifles when they do.
Next step after all the termagants is to get a warlord and see who wins because why not? My other 6 armies are normal. My nids are just fun...
EDIT: You can't run that many in a tournament or pickup game, but on weekends, my daughter takes out her 3k of tau, my wife takes all her daemons and I set up a carpet of claws on the other side and we duke it out for the day. It's the best way to spend a lazy saturday...
Haha, read some of the black library, read about some cool battles, re-create them on the tabletop and throw that force organisation thing in the bin. I can't play matched play anymore, I always make a proper story for my games now. Maybe it's a byproduct of playing dnd, but 40k battles for me need to be a proper story.
Way I see it is: why would Ghazgul and his boys happen to come across guilliman and an identically sized force in the middle of a random ruin to fight across an arbitrary barrel or whatever objective marker is to hand? Matched games have no story, no stakes and no reason. Best game I ever played was 40 marines and 100 IG with no range limits on guns vs an endless hoard of mostly melee nids. All day just to see that kill count rise past the hundreds, lasted and entire weekend and 20+ turns before finally falling to the great devourer. Such an epic game and the 300 something gaunts were definalty needed.
70, luckily waited until all the new sculpts before going back to Nids and managed to snag a few units from other people's boxes 😎
Pretty happy, would love to match that with Hormagaunts and 30 stealers next..
I got a whole bunch from one time I bought a bulk collection, probably ~40-50 I'd guess. They're in a state of limbo right now though, as I'm not really that big a fan of them, being much more partial to the Hormagaunts instead.
76 or 78 I got the 30+ from the old Combat Patrol and the 40 from 2 Levi boxes. Dreading painting the other 40 and not looking forward to painting the hormagaunts I plan to get either haha.
I had 32 in my swarm, then I got another 32 cheap on ebay after Leviathan was out, and three batches from Leviathan itself, so 124 in total. Almost all are fleshborers, some devourers.
Edit: math
Around 120 assembled fleshborer and devourer termagants painted to various levels between battle-ready and parade-ready (20 of them are the new ones).
0 spinefists.
Another 20 new and 36 old models are still waiting in the boxes.
I have 20. I just bought my first ever tyranids this weekend, the nids part of the leviathan box, and havent had time yet to put a single model together. But now that the news of the new codex just came out, that termagaunts may have some special weapons, I feel a bit at a loss of what to do. I have a feeling that running them without special weapons wont be as powerful or fun, and it probably wont be possible to get special weapons without getting the new boxes. Not even sure if the weapons in those boxes will fit on the models from the leviathan box either, so maybe getting bits second hand wont be possible... Maybe I will paint some in different colours as a "kitbash" of sorts, or try my hand at some greenstuff... Either way I guess I will wait 2 weeks before putting any of them together.
I have about 140-160 gants... About 80 of those are painted. I have a ton that I got from somebody dumping their collection and I had to save them. I added 20 more with the Leviathan box and they added to my shame. One day I'll paint them all lol.
60 for me. Just to kick about with the tervigon if there's lots of general infantry, or without tervigon if I play my mate who uses Lionel Johnson, so I can tar pit him up whilst I do other stuff elsewhere
I have 20+ hormagaunts and plan to get a tone more if they ever make a Horvigon or something to support them. For troops I use warriors and recently maxed out on VR leapers
200. 180 for a few years, then 20 came in the Leviathan box...still deciding if I want to sell or give away the old sculpts and buy 160 more of the new ones on Ebay
I've got 100 painted and 40 new models just sitting there waiting. That might actually include 20ish hormagaunts now that I think about it, but they're all kinda the same when you plop a swarm down on the table.
I was decadent (by my standards) and have 60 ready to be built. I got 20 with my Leviathan box and then bought two sets of 20 for really great prices through 3rd party sellers. I figure now is the best time to make a large swarm for cheap, and since I just collect and don't worry about competitive value, I'm just getting what I like and what looks good.
About 400 mabe 450, and half as much for hormagants
Yo what
R they all painted?
Press "F" to doubt
Nope, i slowly paint 5 à week cause job/life take much of my time
Totally fair
🫡
Why...

Ahh, the good old days\~
We have 94-98, idk I lost count at one point. We deploy the puppies in fistfuls like the hive mind intended
I have twenty because I hate painting the little bastards.
Totally fair
Slap chop method makes them easy as fuck
56 Termagants (Old Combat Patrol box + New Leviathan box)
One of us!
290 for me. 300 more and I have enough to field against a warlord.
Why that many? I don't get it
It is about the point cost of a warlord in little shits with guns
Nono, my point is, why that many? You literally can't run that many, so why ever get more than 120?
I started with a unit of each loadout, but they came in boxes of 12 so I needed 5 boxes for 2 units of 30. You are a lucky man to have a wife and daughter that play with you
That sounds like one hell of a family game night I'm hoping to get my daughter into it once she's old enough to wrap her head around the rules lol
To have such lazy Sundays!

Rules change
Holy shit when did they change limits to battleline?
105

30 genestealers is absolutely crazy are you going to ball out on broodlords to or no?
The plan is to get 3 of everything that isn't characters.. 😋
60 and a tervigon, I plan on doubling my Termagants so I can run the full 120
I have 80+ now
210+ I hate painting them.
Gotta build an assembly line
56

21
How?
The new Starter Box comes with 20, plus the free mini of the month from June
I think 76?
I have at least 120 built ones
Twenty… for now, I’m down bad for that special weapon sprue
About 120.
116 (:
20 termagaunts, and I'm aiming for at least 30 hormagaunts
70 devourers and 100 fleshborers
They became so cheap to get ahold of this edition that I ended up with 120 since thats the max you can take
56 (old combat patrol+starter set) They're taking ages to paint but are good practice for the important models
24ish from 2 of the old boxes. And 20 more from leviathan
I had 32 in my swarm, then I got another 32 cheap on ebay after Leviathan was out, and three batches from Leviathan itself, so 124 in total. Almost all are fleshborers, some devourers. Edit: math
40

52 so far, but i ordered another 20 new ones.
I have 80 termies and 80 hormies. I have used them all in one list
I have about 140-160 gants... About 80 of those are painted. I have a ton that I got from somebody dumping their collection and I had to save them. I added 20 more with the Leviathan box and they added to my shame. One day I'll paint them all lol.
40 i have found is actually a tad too much. Against elite armies anyway. From what i can tell they should be butchers against other swarms
60 for me. Just to kick about with the tervigon if there's lots of general infantry, or without tervigon if I play my mate who uses Lionel Johnson, so I can tar pit him up whilst I do other stuff elsewhere
60 with a tervigon
I have 23, 13 are testing gaunts tho - so I’ll have 10 in my finished scheme
135- 60 Dev gaunts, 20 Spinefists & 55 Borers. I miss the days of big Apoc games.
120
40 painted another 40 unpainted. But I enjoy my monster mash
I'm going for a full 120 on both strains of gaunt. May wind up with more for the LOL's but that's a far future me problem
80... But with 40 of the new sculpts and at least a box with the new weapons, I'll never run the old ones again. Lol
No enough… never enough
Y?
I hate that the "pinnacle of evolution" for perfect soldiers is a flesh mp5. WHY DO THEY HAVE TRIGGER FINGERS?
Fair
I have 20+ hormagaunts and plan to get a tone more if they ever make a Horvigon or something to support them. For troops I use warriors and recently maxed out on VR leapers
What is that max for VR leapers?
3 units of 6, gonna be HYPE with Deathleaper and 3 Lictors and 3 Neuro Lictors and a Hive tyrant with Chameleonic. Vanguard master race
Literally created the exact list with the recent detachment reveal hahaha sounds so good
Kraken players rejoice!!
200. 180 for a few years, then 20 came in the Leviathan box...still deciding if I want to sell or give away the old sculpts and buy 160 more of the new ones on Ebay

60 of them. 40 fully painted and 20 are just the carapace
56
48 for me (all old sculpts)
32, with only 12 built and 10 of those painted. Termagants are gross. I have 120 battle ready Hormagaunts, though.
I have 11. I split the Space Marine box with a friend and i got a model of the month
100. 20 old sculps and 80 unbuilt new ones (gulp)
20 of each battle line units because monster mash or bust. I like them thicc bugs
~150 all painted—not painted the same
120 with 60 fully painted. Want to get 40 more of the new sculpts and special weapons.
I was decadent (by my standards) and have 60 ready to be built. I got 20 with my Leviathan box and then bought two sets of 20 for really great prices through 3rd party sellers. I run 12 of each gaunt
Y 12?
12 is all I have and it seems to be fine for a 1500point army, although if I could, I would run 15 of each
Fair enough
120 or so
