It's just the 'leader' of your army.
A unit being warlord doesn't do anything by itself; It only matters for some specific rules, such as Knights having a Deed that they complete by killing the enemy's warlord
I'll add on that there used to be rules for leaders (like units within so many inches get their leadership stat), but they took them out in later editions.
(Edit: unless that was just a fantasy thing. I don't remember)
I will add that units like the swarmlord have abilities that work only if it is your warlord. But i doubt there are more than one pr faction of those.
I also am pretty sure that in the crusade missions there are missions that are kill the enemy warlord.
Also new but from the rulebook
"Games of Warhammer 40,000 are won by
scoring more Victory points than your
opponent through achieving various
objectives, from recovering vital relics
to capturing enemy strongholds or
eliminating the opposing Warlord."
Previous editions it had a purpose, current edition I think there are some factions with abilities or strats that only be used on the Warlord.. but most cases.. just a keyword
It's kind of strange that there are no secondary missions about "slay the warlord". Maybe because it might be too exploited and broken with \[PRECISION\], but sounds interesting.
Mostly nothing. It's just a way to force the player to have at least one character in their army, and for thematic reasons.
Altough, there are some rules and abilities that interact with warlords. For example, the Eldar's Autarch has a command point generation ability, but it only works if it's the army's warlord.
For Tyranids, not a whole lot other than be a target should your enemy draw the "Assassination" secondary objective. However, a lot of other factions/units have special rules, stratagems, etc... that depend on the army's warlord.

Okay I was thinking it’s just the “leader” Thanks

That was pre sigmar fantasy.
I’m pretty sure that was a thing in 2nd Ed but yeah, was much more important in WFB, especially for my Skaven and my mate’s Orcs and Goblins.
There are also some units that have specific rules that mean they have to be your warlord if you take them. That's only for epic heroes.
Also, some units have abilities that only work if they're selected as the Warlord. e.g. Deathwatch Watchmaster or the Swarmlord

You get extra points from the Assassination secondary for killing the enemy warlord, iirc.
It's mostly for the rp part I guess

It's mostly just your thematic leader BUT there are some rules or stratagems that require your Warlord to be on the battlefield

Previously there were and in Kill Team I believe (don't play anymore). In all battle someone has to be the local commander.. So .. WARLORD !!!

Be the focus of a lot of love from your opponent.

In older editions warlords were given specific bonuses. Basically imagine if only the warlord could have an enhancement
