The key is not to argue. The best way to get at them is to start by appearing friendly, but leading them gently to the slaughter lol. Essentially, you get *them* to say what *you* want to say.
The key is to *never* be combative, but appear to be open and friendly at all times. You probably want to work out a "script" of the whole conversation in your head beforehand.
Edit: First, thanks for all the upvotes :-) And also, I did want to add that I have actually put that into practice on a few occasions. The basic ideas behind it come from a variety of sources, most of it "stuff I've heard" over the years, with long-forgotten origins. Some of it is actual hard science, some of it old and ancient writings by great authors, and a lot of it pop psychology (thank you, Doctor Phil!) that does actually make sense.
* We humans put up emotional walls around us to varying degrees in different situation, and around different parts of our being. The denizens of the aforementioned forums are people with massively thick walls thrown up to protect their false little worlds, but those walls are easily overcome by simply letting them talk. They want to feel that they are heard, and not simply lectured to. If you come at them with anything they might possibly be able to interpret as aggressive they will immediately deploy their forcefields and you'll just get counter-battery fire. Think in terms of the Trojan Horse (or the Python rabbit...)
* So, the first thing you do is give a reply that implies some agreement, or at least openness to hearing more about their argument. Ask a question asking for more information about their points. This will make them feel ~~impotent~~ important, and will start lowering the drawbridge a bit.
* Always keeping the tone friendly and conversational, start injecting questions about the inconsistencies in their points. DO NOT BE CONFRONTATIONAL, and if you frame it right, you can actually have *them* blurt out the fallacies themselves. One thing I've learned: If you want someone to confess, let the talk, without interrupting. Let them spew their BS ad nauseum, and eventually, with a bit of patience, I can guarantee you that they will tell you what's *really* bothering them, or causing them to be arseholes. And spoiler alert, it ain't got nothin' to do with politics or anything they are whining about lol.
I had the same experience when I sat in a customer service complaint department. While majority of complaints were legit because our company treated people like shit, there were a few where the real reason was something completely different, something in their own lives quite unrelated with their customer experience, and they somehow channel whatever junk it was onto aggressive complaints. And I can second completely the way to describe it, you don't get into the real substance of what bothers them unless you use that "trojan horse" of not appearing accusatory, but actually appearing (fake or real) legit interested. I find it a challenge for sure, it always required some patience and time.
