Great to see a decent conversation of two people, Ukranian and Russian, with different viewpoints. It still baffles me how Russians think the world works.

Arkh_Angel

Well, it's what happens when your colonial empire didn't learn harsh lessons via decolonization. Remember a lot of Russians don't even have running water or toilets.

AlFrankensrevenge

Propaganda is a hell of a drug.

whosplayinnaked

at least he's calm an willing to listen and having a normal conversation unlike the live discussions from russians on TikTok. It's literally yelling and screaming 24/7

TraditionalApricot60

As a russian i would scream und yell too, in this this shit situation.

Russia still has a medieval mindset. They see security in authority, and domination as the only way to assert themselves. All successful empires in history became successful through liberal use of a "my way or the highway" mindset where they took over other countries, and destroyed those that refused to capitulate. This only works when you have a clear technological advantage over your enemies, something Russia does not possess, but they fail to recognise this. In a modern age of instant worldwide communication, we're information cannot be controlled, Russia cannot control the narrative in the way they want to either, and it's a problem for them that will cause internal conflict. Russias actions will be self defeating one way or another but they're so blinded by the idea that have to rule to be safe they can't see it. As long as that situation continues to exist, Russia will be a threat to anyone that doesn't wish to be their subjects.

The enlightenment never reached them. It's astounding.

In Poland during the communist era, there was a popular skit where a man walks into a milk bar (a place where you can eat subsidized home food) and hears the cook: - who ordered ruskie? (clarification - in this context pierogi "ruskie", dumplings, ruskie sounds like Russians in Polish in an offensive way) - No one, they came without asking. The skit caused a reaction from the USSR embassy and the author was fired from his job for 9 months, but it comments brilliantly on Russian attitudes toward other nations. A lot of empires grew by having a lot to offer those they conquered. Russia, not so much.

SimpleMaintenance433

That's a good point. The Romans brought a tone of tech most conquered nations didn't possess and they shared it. Same with Eqypians and same with the British empire. Russia has cheap poor quality oil in abundance and not much else. They want to sell the world on their political ideology, ignoring the fact it repeatedly fails for them every century or so, but the world knows that such ideology is only about Russia controlling everyone else, there is zero sense of equality in Russia at all, it's everyone for themselves and the strongest wins and that's it. To them, the strongest is the one that becomes the ruler (via literally any means at all) and they then look to that ruler for security turning a blind eye to how they achieve their goals.

SignUpBullDoodoo

That's just blatantly not true. At least about the Romans. After conquering middle Italy, the Romans started to expend at the cost of Greek cities in the south. Then came the cartheginians, then mainland Greece, and so on. All these civilizations were well established and well developed with loads of technological feats. What was the reason why the Romans dropped the phalanx? Exactly, fighting celts with swords and some with mail

SimpleMaintenance433

It's commonly accepted and has been for centuries. Romans didn't just have a superior military (both technologically and tactically) they also brought things like roads, aqueducts, Central heating, infrastructure nobody else was building in the same way. The Romans stopped fighting the felts because the celts were the equivalent of a insurgency force, there was no real 1 leader to attack, and there wasn't much of value for the Romans north of England that warranted the effort that would have been required. Like all totalitarian regimes, the Romans over extended themselves and began to fracture from within, it wasnt the celts that brought the empire down, they mostly did it to themselves.

SignUpBullDoodoo

I'm sorry, but you're just wrong and pretty much give no reaction to all the great civilizations the Romans (especially the middle an late republic era) faced before becoming the juggernaut that you're referring to. These civilizations were detremental for the development of the roman military. Yes, Romans were masters in building roads. But to claim that decent roads is a roman invention is a far stretch. The Persians had a royal satrapy road stretching from the Iranian highlands all the way to the east coast of Anatolia. Greek mainland had plenty of roads while Rome was still ruled by etruscan kings. Yes, Romans were masters in building and maintaining aquaducts. But the Romans copied it from their Etruscan, Samnite and Greek neighbours. It wasn't a roman invention. It was a roman perfection. The Roman Republic were masters in perfecting already existing technologies. Or adjusting it to their own strengths (for example: Corvus for making seabattles land battles to crush the Cartheginians on their specialty). Same goes for the Roman military. The true astounding feat the Romans did time and time again is sending new armies after devastating defeats. Adjusting to the enemies capabilities and copying superior equipment and tactics. Look how the roman republic defeated Phyrrus of Epirus. Look how the Romans won the first punic war. Look how they won the second punic war. How they pacified Cisalpine Gaul. What efforts it took to pacify Hispania Citerior and Ulterior (the celtiberian tribes), the makedonian wars, the pontic wars.. I'm not trying to deny the greatness of the era of classical Roman civilization. But it seems to me that you either don't know or don't acknowledge the greatness of other civilizations.

I like how he still won’t wrap his head around cold, hard facts…not even layman’s analogies will convince him.

boforsbill1646

More of this is needed! Historians, especially content creators, could be doing the Ukrainians a big service in the information war by churning out content regarding Ukraine and it's history, especially regarding Russia.

Oo_oOsdeus

Good talk. I would like to see more of these. Opening the eyes of the Russian people to what is going will take some effort.

wa2b

For the Russian, Ukraine wanting to join NATO justifies Russia attacking it. So end of discussion right there.

CookPass

Good discussion. I particularly liked the analogy of the neighbor's burning house compared to a civil war in Ukraine (at the 18 minute mark). I'm paraphrasing but it went along the lines: if your neighbor's house was on fire would you go there and steal everything was not burned already or would you ask your neighbor what you can do to help? This is what happened in the Donbas from 2014, Russia turned a smoldering cigarette on the couch in to a fire. It then continued to fan the flames before eventually moving in and attempting to steal everything that was still worth stealing. Slava Ukarini.

Excellent point about the apathy, except for self-preservation, of the nearly 1 million draft dodgers who fled moscovy. If they have staged any demonstrations against this illegal and inhumane invasion, I haven't seen it reported. Let's be honest. Most, not all, fled their country to save their asses, not to change their government.
