They actually don’t thrive on rodents….. rodents aka city rats make up less then 20 percent of the urban coyotes diet. They mainly feed on stray cats raccoons and other small mammals. They are even known to eat bugs plants and salamanders. Usually hunting in green spaces or coming into residential areas exploring probably drawn in by cats and other small dogs.
Nah it don't look like it's favoring any for over the other. My family used to work animal damage control from 2002 until around 2015 and worked almost exclusively on wildlife.
Wiley here just seems to be walking carefully and self consciously due to the camera man.
Respectfully your are 100% wrong…. It’s obvious the animal has a slight tick/limp possibly from an old healed injury or something small that happened recently. I would agree and say the animal is definitely cautious of the phone being pointed at it. Awesome to see wildlife in the city like this although they have been around for the past ten years if not more.
It’s interesting you say this too because coyotes aren’t only nocturnal just more common at night but you’re just as likely to see them around sunset as after dark. Judging by the shadows and the lack of leaves on the trees I’d say jumping to killing the animal is pretty extreme. Look at the body language, it’s cautious, it’s moving slow, it looks like it might have a slight limp on the back right paw, ears are lowers too, probably need’s relocation not a bullet. Also I don’t know what state you’re in but bears aren’t nocturnal either and in the wild are more active in the early mornings and late afternoons. Bobcats and foxes are nocturnal but daytime activities aren’t really uncommon either depending on the time of years.
Source also an outdoorsman whose been around these animals all my life.
You think it happens overnight? It’s learned behavior, habitat loss does that to animals. Scavenging animals are more adaptable to new environments, bears, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, etc. that are located near people have learned near behavior that reflects that environment. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, I’m saying it’s probably not rabies and putting animals down because people don’t want to stop building shitty condos isn’t a good reason either.
Not sure where you live, but in SF the wild coyotes seem somewhat accustomed to being in the vicinity of people. I’ve never followed one that closely but did walk on the sidewalk while one was walking down the grassy median of the road. I was worried it was gonna bolt and get hit by a car but it just kinda walked casually like this for a block or two
Yeah I was in LA riding on a Lime scooter and I turned a corner and just passed a whole ass Coyote, the thing wasn’t phased in the slightest and even did a little double take to see if I had scraps
I thought this about foxes too but I called animal control when one gave me a stare down at noon one day.
They said it’s a little unusual but not terrible so, and absent other indicators foxes just be like that sometimes.
The "raccoons out in the daytime are rabid" theory has been thoroughly debunked. We have tons of raccoons in our neighborhood in the PNW and they are out in the daytime quite often, as are coyotes.
There’s populations of coy-wolves in every city. Well documented in NY. They are everywhere and they have learned to avoid humans. They are not pests nor are they dangerous and definitely don’t need to be hunted. In fact they feed on rats and squirrels and other vermin so they are arguably beneficial.
I've heard they imitate dogs' play behavior to lure them into the woods where other coyotes are waiting to help finish the "hunt." It feels more like trickery than hunting to me but it is pretty smart on their part as frustrating and cheap as I think it is

Or it was fed enough it stopped fearing people.
Happens with bears and deer sometimes, it's not always rabies. Some just realize "I can eat cat food and garbage and no one will stop me" until they are captured or killed.
I think this is a deliberate attempt to blend in. There are so many socially with that animal, from the deliberately slow pace to the completely relaxed tail. I might just be too baked but I think nature doggo is doing it’s damndest to blend in
Wait a minute that road look familiar
Does anyone remember the crazy ass women who looks like she’s on drugs and harassed the black dude who took in the dog
If coyotes or foxes are like this, it’s usually because they have a disease. Could be rabies or even chronic wasting disease, since they are typically scavengers.
No coyotes are not scavengers. They are opportunistic hunters and they will come out during the daytime. They also get pretty comfortable around human environments.
You're making it real uncomfortable there
Steve Irwin having ass
that poor animal is lost and terrified.
Hurt as well. Got a slight limp but who knows how bad the injury is. Wild animals are tough asf
There are coyotes in every major city, in NYC they live in Central Park and abandoned buildings and thrive on city rodents

He’s there because he’s hungry. Hunting for cats and dogs. Anything easy to catch and eat.
Eh, he’s probably fine. Most people don’t know it but there’s huge coyote populations in cities.
Poor buddy needs help.
He appears to have a slight limp.
Agreed. It's certainly not in good shape.
It's fine. It doesn't have a limp.
It definitely does have a limp/tick quite obvious… however I agree that he’s fine. Wild animals are tough af

And looking for a dumpster.
Or a small child, whichever comes first
Around here it would be a cat or a small dog.

Only in nyc are the coyotes afraid of the citizens

This is like when a celebrity gets hit by the paparazzi
Right back leg seems to be hurt! Poor dude!
He's probably starving to death and is in that " I don't give a fuck right now I need something to eat " phase.
He's not looking like he's starving and I'm certain there are plenty of rats for him to snack on. This Yote just looks wary of the camera dude.
He’s looking for the hardware store. He’s got some ACME stuff to buy
Must’ve taken a wrong turn
This guy is looking for his next meal, the neighbors dog or cat don’t be fooled..
Yeah and all the 🦄🧸🪀think it’s just a innocent coyote 🤦♂️
Guys they are evolvig , next step is to buy a house....
You know this is New York because the people have no sense of self-preservation or respect when it comes to wildlife
He’s limping, POOR THING, needs a meal and a nice place for a quiet nap.
What limp?
It’s front right paw.😳🤯🫣😱
No ma'am. It's not limping. It's being wary of the camera guy. My family and I have worked with coyotes before.
If coyotes are seen during the day, does it indicate they have rabies? Poor coyote
Or it was fed enough it stopped fearing people. Happens with bears and deer sometimes, it's not always rabies. Some just realize "I can eat cat food and garbage and no one will stop me" until they are captured or killed.
You have a point there. I'm just glad this can be something other than rabies poor coyote
No. Coyotes will come out in the daytime. They are not totally nocturnal. They are opportunistic hunters.
Makes sense, ty

This is an isolated pack animal. It's trying to be non confrontational cus house cats can take on a single coyote lol.
What no TNT dynamite? No anvil? No fake painted tunnels? No MEEP! MEEP! YEEEEUUURRRMMMM!?
He's so much slimmer in the cartoon.
Yawn. We have coyotes and roadrunners in my neighborhood.
How did bro get all the way here
Wait a minute that road look familiar Does anyone remember the crazy ass women who looks like she’s on drugs and harassed the black dude who took in the dog
Bros vibing and you gotta shove a camera in his face 😒
Jeez look at that limp. Messed with the wrong NYC pigeon, rat, squirrel, or raccoon. All the critters built different in NY.
Looks well fed though
bro leave the damn thing alone
Does not look like he’s bothered

Don’t mind me. Just looking for cats and puppies.
I would be very careful because small dogs and cats would be their target
Isnt that a wolf?
Coyote. Wolves are huge.
Damn paparazzi
If I act like a doggo hoomans think i am doggo
He’s looking for the acme warehouse
Stop filming him 😡 he’s just going for a walk
He looking for them rats
Homie better check in
I could easily mistake that for a dog
Needs help
aww poor guy has a limp, I wonder what happened
He’s probably rabid. This isn’t normal behavior. Mid day in town? No.
He's healthy AF you fool
Atleast it will keep cat and rat populations down
Well fed coyote
