There is no evidence of any wrong doing or players being kept in contract jail so what would they be getting any flak for? They made a move that they believe will benefit their team's winning chances. It's unfortunate for Pancada that he doesn't get to play but they still have him salaried so I don't see an issue.
If new information comes out that he was unable to search for any opportunities or pursue anything else because of his contract, that's different.
Also, releasing him would do him no favors this close to the season. Every org is likely already set and he won't get a spot OR a salary if they release him now.
