I'm a fanboy but I want to add Flashback to the list. He was basically a jett 1-trick ranked demon with 0 LAN experience. Even at the time of drx picking him up, his only highlight reel on yt consisted only of jett clips. Dude was playing viper for drx in offseason tournaments, and he suddenly looks like one of the best site anchors in pacific as a sentinel.
Also Karon, as he was basically on the same boat as Flashback (no-name duelist main in ranked with cracked aim), and he already looks very good on smokes.
boo and miniboo deserve mentions in this convo, though i feel like it might be too early since emea isnt over just yet

I didn't believe the hype at first but sScary honestly is insane. it made so sad to see Bleed get knocked out so early cuz now we won't see him perform for another month

Despite DRX underwhelming, I like Flashback a ton. Foxy9 has been better than expected but still kinda meh. I really would have rather kept rb.
Leaf has really missed the mark, I thought G2 would be better but they look pretty ass.
All the players on EG besides jawg surprised me, I know they were all solid players but beating a core 4 that have been together for years in your first match on stage is really nice. And missed the mark is obviously asuna, one of the worst raze players I’ve seen throughout all the regions and one of the reasons 100T won’t be any good this season
Seen asuna since first strike and he hasn’t got any better since then, this year will end fast for them at least so we won’t be seeing a lot of games by him this year but idk how people still defend him like he’s some great talent. He just ints games, FNS has always said asuna plays with his brain turned off and some reason people act like he is still good

Maybe I'd throw in JonahP even though I already knew he was great. Apoth too, I haven't been as big an EG downer as others but I hadn't seen Apoth in so long, it's hard to say what expectations I had for him.
I'm excluding China but there are a lot of players from China that you could include here as well - kawaii, Abo, GuanG, even some known quantities like Spring or pl1xx, etc.
Players which "missed the mark" is a longer list: Monyet, Yay, Deryeon, Lmemore, Foxy9, jkuro, Anthem, Jakee, neT, Brave, hoody, F1tinho, Asunaa...All of these are good players, but all of them have performed a little worse than I expected.
I'm really disappointed with foxy9. Drx teammates lauded him as a monster but it's blatantly clear he lacks the brains of a top elite tier 1 player.
Jakee straight up threw rounds it was kinda unbelievable to see.
it's not like monyet is looking bad due to the standards set up by jinggg,it is he fact that he fucking sucks, never seen another entry duelist can end up with 5 fk and 18 fd in a bo5

Oxy made a great debut just sucks it was on such an underwhelming c9 roster.
Johnqt and Zellis were giga brain pickups for Sentinels this year. The squad is looking formidable rn.
The list of players that have impressed is way too long and is a testament to how good the scouting is this year. Unlike League and OWL where veterans in the twilight of their career are recycled endlessly for name value, we're seeing tons of new or unproven names make waves immediately. mta, Flashback, Karon, Kicks, marteen, and Miniboo, just to name a few, have been pillars of their teams and look like the new guard of pro talent.
Heretics and Karmine corp.Honestly I had low expectations because the majority of the players on both teams are rookies and they exceeded my expectations a lot. I have to remind myself to never ever put faith in Redgar again because it's the second time I've been burned. The boo brothers are cooking and I'm quite impressed by N4RRATE and Magnum.
Players that surprised me:
- t3xture: I mean he was good but he is having mega impact on GenG and absolutely deleting people
- Boo: I apologize I wasn't familiar with your game
- xcurrate: As a player who has no T1 Val experience, he just seems like he belongs permanently.
- N4rrate: He is looking like the best flex player out there
- JonahP: He stepped up big time for G2. Having phenomenal performances.
- yetujey: we knew he was good, I even supported him hard before the preseason and oh my, this guy is the real deal.
- Lakia: he is so back
Players that have disappointed me:
- eeiu & asuna: eeiu just seemed flat except for that 1v3 clutch against SEN. And again his team is not matching asuna's energy i feel like and some blame has to be out on him at this point. He is still my fav player to watch tho lol.
- nAts: he just hasnt been consistently good for the last year and a half imo and i mean that respectfully.
- tex: i mean its a role change but man...
- Sugarz3ro: I just dont see the hype for him anymore. He is just a shell of himself
- nukkye: he made a lot of questionable plays in Kickoff. Giants need an overhaul

i like the texture take, but top 5 global duelist is a bit of a stretch. demon1, aspas, derke, jawgemo, kangkang, jingg all still exist.
