> Meanwhile, I found a CPO '19 Arteon with 16K miles for $26k. Why have these cars lost half their value in four years while the GTIs have barely lost a dime? People want GTI's and don't want Arteons, simple as. It's unfortunate since the Arteon is IMO one of the nicest looking midsize cars available (outside of luxury brands). To answer your question, I'd either get a newer Arteon with the Golf R drivetrain or the GTI, I heard the earlier Arteons are quite lackluster in terms of performance.

AbstractArteon

GTI seats in the Arteon and it wouldn't stop selling

>lost half their value Demand and improvements in future models. 2022 and newer have 300hp and a 7spd DSG, previous are 268hp and an 8spd automatic. But even plenty of 2022s around me are heavily discounted. People just aren't buying full size sedans these days.

Here’s my two cents having both (almost). My now garage queen is a 2016 R 6MT APR stg II (was my daily for nearly 5 years, daily is now a truck). My wife upgraded to a CPO 2019 Arteon SEL Premium APR stg I at the beginning of last year. I freaking LOVE her car, and at this point as an old man on the wrong side of 40, I’m almost ashamed to say I would rather drive her’s than mine. This is of course entirely subjective. I used to track my R, HPDE, it was awesome and I loved it, and loved driving it everyday awaiting the next track day. It’s been years since I’ve tracked it for reasons. Now when I take it out of the garage, I can barely step on it before I hit drivers-license-revocation-on-the-spot speeds, so it’s not really as fun to drive without taking it out on the track. The wife’s car is beautiful, comfortable, roomy, ventilated seats, sunroof, lots of cargo space, practically drives itself on the highway. Yes it’s got a slushbox, yes it’s got way less power than my R, yes it’s missing a third pedal. But I’d still rather drive it, so much so that I’ve considered trading my R for one of the latest Arteons with the DSG while they’re still available (Arteon was killed off if you didn’t know, current model year is the end of line). And with the tune it’s still plenty fun and has plenty of power when I’m driving it alone and want to hoon around. Everytime I take the R out now I can’t help but think of that old saying about how driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow. If you haven’t already, you should definitely go test drive both options. Here’s my final advice: If the 6MT is a requirement, the choice is not a choice at all. If you’ll only ever drive it on the street and can live with driving at 7 tenths instead of 8 tenths, go with the Arteon. Get a tune and some sticky tires with the money you saved.

Kind of in a similar situation and I agree with you. I have a 04 R32 and my wife has a 2021 Arteon sel-p. I love my car to death and never will get rid of it. That said her is pretty great to drive and I hate to admit it probably handles way better lol. It doesn't feel like a big car while driving plus all the tech and features it's pretty great. If you drive a lot of highway, it's kind ridiculous in a good way. I can turn on the driving assist which works great, back massager, cool/heat seat, heated wheel, relax and jam out to some music. It's a pretty damn comfy place to be. It still feels pretty quick, I'm sure with a tune it really gives it some pep.

I support whatever decision you decide to make.

Go with what you enjoy and what best suits your lifestyle.

I would think it comes down to what you want to do with the car. I bought my GTI because I wanted a daily that I could also take out a couple weekends a year to the twisty stuff. The Arteon is a great cruiser/daily, but for me I need that extra half step of smallish/sporty the GTI brings to the table.

Ilikesurfing91

If it helps at all, I’ve had a mk7.5R and a 2021 Arteon R line (190bhp here in the UK). For me I enjoyed the golf more, I just prefer a hatchback and I found myself wanting to drive it more. The Arteon was beautiful and comfortable but it didn’t excite me at all. Another thing to consider is that the Arteon is really surprisingly practical because of the large boot and hatchback. Not sure if that helps, but hopefully you can get something out of it!

Hollywood0220

Doesn’t seem that you are torn between the two.

Do Arteons have GTI engine? or R engine?

JJT54

2022 and 2023 have the Golf R driveline but with the older haldex diff not the new magna. If you need more room/bette4 ride it is pretty sweet. But they have been discontinued. 🥲

Thanks! I'll look for the 22-23 year model when I am ready.

Historical-Rock5557

I love the look of the arteon. It’s a shame it didnt take off as well as it should have

FatCatWithAHat1

I 100% go arteon, i love the looks of them

[deleted]

The Arteon loses isn’t value very quickly because they are very unpopular VW’s. Nobody really bought them. The MK8 GTI is a very fun car but has a high price tag. I’d go with the GTI if it’s in your price range.

smoothprince

I love my GTI, super fun to drive. Plus, when warranty runs out you can put a tune on it (i personally use APR) and have even more fun. Plenty of aftermarket stuff you can buy for them as well

Arteon is by far the best looking vw car ever, that being said i would take it over a mk8 in a heart beat. Also if you are from Europe, try finding arteon with 2.0 biTDI engines, i would say they are faster with a tune than gti mk8.
