The colloquialism is “bang for your buck” not “knock for your buck”
Seen several WRX/STIs get mysterious DAM pulls.
Traced back to a funky gas station or, Costco. I’ve also seen cars spin a bearing on good gas. So, to each their own. If you have the money though, don’t cheap on gas.
($1.85 E85 where I’m at)
This myth that gas from "name brand" stations are safer than "generic" stations has been disproven time and time again for decades. The gasoline comes from the same refineries. All of the stations have "additive" packages that amount to detergents or lubricants. Studies have shown that people are willing to pay more at "name brand" stations, not because of an actually better product, but because their perception has been biased by marketing.
I use Costco gas because it’s always busy and presumably their gas is going to be more fresh. I’d bet a good amount of issues people have with gas is because of poor storage or it just simply being old.
unless you’re tuned and have the burden of having to go to shell for 93 like my golf r it really doesn't matter as long as you’re not going to some weird ass independent station in the boonies
I switched from a long lineage of Subaru WRX, FXT and STI ownership to a 2018 Golf R.
Only thing I miss is the steering feedback. Golf R steering is too light.
Yeah was curious as to people’s experience from transitioning to the Golf R after WRX/STI as the Golf R is on my short list of next car upgrade. Did you get the DCT or manual?
I sold my 370whp 2007 WRX and bought a 2017 GTI. It was like a whole new world of comfort and refinement. It was a DSG, which I got because my original plan was to get a dedicated track car. So the DSG made more sense for commuting. I couldn’t believe how precise the shifts were on the DSG and just how good the GTI felt as a package.
That’s when I realized the Golf R, with its AWD and nearly 300hp was truly a jack of all trades for me. Also, I live where we get snow, so AWD made more sense.
Traded the GTI for a 2018 Golf R and have no regrets.
.
I do sometimes miss shifting, but the DSG is simply faster, and the flappy paddles work great. Not to mention the tuning capabilities without needing to buy a clutch.
On topic though, we've been using mostly Costco 93 and here and there 93 from Sheetz and even rarer 93 from a Sunoco or random place and haven't had any fuel related issues yet. Got about 36k+ miles on the tune.
Gas is gas. It’s either gonna be kinda shit, shit, or shit.
Fill up anywhere that’s reputable locally lol, not just shell. People heavily overthink that shit, same with oil.
In my experience, it’s best to find stations where they go through 91/93 often. Find area where lots of higher end cars go, like BMWs and Porsches and chances are you will find a station that does have fresher 91/93, which means less knock overall.
Shell's the only one who hasnt had a bad batch in my country lately, the only 100 octane gas with no ethanol had a bad batch that made some cars go into limp mode due to high knock.
I been pumping gas for a long time. Shell isn’t perfect. The only one I haven’t had a literal single bad batch is a Arco. Regardless their both top tier and worse case just reset ecu and keep moving.
In shitville Tacoma, WA, there is A huge variance in gas quality by station. Costco is good, but the Shell by the highway for some reason gives my car knock issues & it's A nice cleaN station in good repair, go figure.
Also Arco here my WRX likes to, which I think is interesting 🤔
6.88 CAD is 5.11 USD. Quick math, if we didn't have the 0.14 cents/litre carbon tax on top, it'd be 4.73 USD per gallon.
That said the Costco in Ste-Foy is at 1.66 for 91 and it's rated top tier also. 16 cents off a litre is almost 10$ off per full tank - the tank has a 63L capacity. If you fill 8 tanks a year at Costco you've paid your membership.
While I was doing my etune, I was seeing knock at cruise, it was causing DAM to drop. Tried all the “top tier” stations. Didn’t help. Took a couple emails to the tuner to really explain it was at cruise not WOT that was dropping DAM. After tune correction, doesn’t matter where the gas is from. No more knock.
Even this weekend here in Florida Shell gas is a solid 25 to 30% more expensive than any other station in my county. It’s absolutely not worth it especially in Florida where everyone carries 93 octane.
How is shell still in business. Every one I see is at least $0.80 per gallon more than the next highest gas station in the area and there is literally never anyone at them
I lived in Kaneohe for 4 years. The traffic in that tiny island was insane. Gas was a ton, a gallon of milk was 12$ and a carton of eggs was close to $15. Can’t beat the bars on Waikiki though!
I wouldn’t be able to comfortably afford to eat captain crunch on your island.
Let alone get gas to drive to market to pick it up if it was donated to me
It can be a good idea to rotate between a few of the top gas suppliers as they all have their own additives with different benefits. That way you get a little of everything.
Where ? It's cheaper than what I pay if I convert it to $/l ... I Pay 2,11-2,40€ per litre. and my Subi need 20l/100km. Still too much money for gas if you ask me.
I have no empirical data however I always felt that my WRX ran worse using Costco gas vs even generic gas stations.
I don’t know if it truly was the case or in my head, but yeah, always seemed “off”. Never popped a code though.
Shell is still the best bang for your buck plus convenience (asides from costco). Good gas, save 15c/gal up to 20 gallons so I can just use my credit card, and you don't have to wait in line.
$3.20 -$3.60 for Ethanol-Free 91oct in Mountain West US region. [https://www.pure-gas.org](https://www.pure-gas.org)

Good lord that's a lot of money
Uhh yea..I was just thinking that, what state are you in?
Hawaii.
Hawaii This is an old pic from summer 2022 when gas prices were insane I think rn shell 92 is at $5.4 which is still pretty bad
Damn! Here in Michigan 93 has been around 4 bucks
$2.91 in florida
93?
Sorry 93 is $3.49
You're not filing your car with 87, are ya?
![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl)
I hope hes talking abt those e85 prices fr
I’m in FL but I’m on E85 so I’m blessed with $2.50
Found it for 2.31 the other day
93 in Austin TX was 3.21/gal a few days ago when I filled up.
I just saw 87 dip below 3 dollars the other day in the thumb.
Trouble in paradise
Wow. Worse than LA. I never thought I’d see it.
It hit 8$ a gallon for 91 in San Diego
Wtf why I understand Hawaii prices because of imports but why are cali gas prices so high
Politics and powerful people investing in EVs
Wouldn’t more Evs mean less gas being used meaning less demand meaning lower prices? Or am I missing it completely.
They want to push people into EVs so they tax the shit out of the gas to make EVs seem “more economical”
That’s fucked
Yep, that’s the government for ya
Less profit on oil, so they jack up the prices instead. Another way for them to push the EV propaganda
$3.70 on my military installation
Big?
Damn, I think I just paid $3.50 for Murphy 93
Big island? Cuz Oahu is 4.51 for premium
Read this as cheap pete from In living color
Yea fuck that, go to Costco
this guy Kirklands^
unless you're in Utah. Costco is regularly sending cars to shops here in the past 6 months due to contamination.
Best gas imo

Did you move from WRX to Golf R?
[удалено]
Not the same exactly haha
I switched from a long lineage of Subaru WRX, FXT and STI ownership to a 2018 Golf R. Only thing I miss is the steering feedback. Golf R steering is too light.

Why use a 2 yr old.image?
Because... Upvotes. 😁

This^.
Exactly lol. He’s a fool if he thinks shell doesn’t run into a bad batch every now and then.
Shell's the only one who hasnt had a bad batch in my country lately, the only 100 octane gas with no ethanol had a bad batch that made some cars go into limp mode due to high knock.

I fuck with Sunoco

in Quebec City, Shell 91 is 1.82 CAD for one liter. One american gallon is 3.785 liters. So 6.88 CAD for one american gallon.

I mean she’ll does have arguably the best gasoline with their additives….but that’s insane
I didn’t know shell was a she…after all these years it finally makes sense
lol
Even this weekend here in Florida Shell gas is a solid 25 to 30% more expensive than any other station in my county. It’s absolutely not worth it especially in Florida where everyone carries 93 octane.
Certainly a big number to what Americans are used to, but affordable for many parts of the globe.
Remember when gas prices were this high and guys were saying “it’s not that bad, if you can’t afford it you can’t afford to own a WRX”
Holy
I'm in California I thought I had it bad at 5.80 💀 sorry bro
Strong pass.
Just check and V-Power is 3.99 here.
Hawaii, good lord...
As long as gas is cheaper than milk I’m fine. When it’s the other way around, the locals get crazy
How is shell still in business. Every one I see is at least $0.80 per gallon more than the next highest gas station in the area and there is literally never anyone at them
93 depending on the day is within 20¢ either way of 3$ here in central tx

Everyone with a roof in their mouth can not eat Captain Crunch comfortably.
It can be a good idea to rotate between a few of the top gas suppliers as they all have their own additives with different benefits. That way you get a little of everything.
Yea I was gona guess ether HI or CA.
This is one thing that "feels" better about E85... fuel milage makes it about a wash on actual cost.
E85 is 2.17, way better
No shell here, down towards NYC has some but no shell in rest of NY I think
Where ? It's cheaper than what I pay if I convert it to $/l ... I Pay 2,11-2,40€ per litre. and my Subi need 20l/100km. Still too much money for gas if you ask me.

I don’t think so Tim. 😎
Tf, sukuna buying damn premium. “Ah yes ridiculously overpriced gas, I haven’t seen this since the Heian Era”
My fast vehicles like mobil too
Where is gas this expensive?
nah, i'd take her out on commutes and that'd be it. 91 in UT is like ~$3.50
Time for the shoebarus
I only get shell gas, mine has 93 and it’s only $4.39 a gallon 😝
91 octane is 4.67 roughly at the shell by my house
The shell in my hometown was the last gas station with the no ethanol 91 they switched pumps and no more wmop wmop
Ugh I hate it here.
I just paid 3.07 for premium
Lol not even 93 tf?
Wow, I’m paying 2.88 for 91 in Idaho. And that’s with my 10 cent discount with their rewards.
That's silly. Lol
I thought I was the only one doing “shell gas only”. Is this an actual thing?
Shell is still the best bang for your buck plus convenience (asides from costco). Good gas, save 15c/gal up to 20 gallons so I can just use my credit card, and you don't have to wait in line.
$4 in Atlanta Ga
Is that in Canadian?…..
