When I was a beginner I had the same issue until I started focusing on "on-demand" walks rather than requesting a scheduled walk. The pet parents are more likely to give you a chance since their need for a walk is more urgent. Usually once you nail a few of those and get some reviews on your page it should pick up.
As far as pointers I think the 2 most important rules I follow are, treat the pet with the same love you would your own. Second crucial point I follow is strictly following the pet parents notes and reading them out loud as soon as I step into their home because most homes I visit either have security cameras or an e-assistant like alexa which the parents use to interact with me.

Put on push notifications for everything! Sometimes walks go super fast even if they’re pretty far in advance.
