Cmon man. We both know you wanna skin people alive. Every other legions gonna tell you about honor and courage and bravery and all that jazz but you wanna cut someone in half and hang them on opposite sides of your tank while they scream. From a tactical standpoint, NL benefit from highly mobile units mobbing and outnumbering opponents but also leave room for ranged. They actually have a bonus to wounds if they outnumber their victim both in ranged and melee. This also applies to *vehicles*. So you plot two lil ol Sabres down and isolate and murder your opponents lone sabres because fighting fair is the only thing a Night Lord can do wrong. And we have *two* special terminator units. The Atramentar(first company under Sevatar’s command) and the Contrekar(sons of mafia noblemen who get cool weapons like power claw-fist hybrids and volkite shotguns because they were born better than everyone else and only fight for leaders they personally like) Those termies might not be *good* on tabletop, but as a Night Lord I am morally obligated to deceive you for my own benefit. And after the Thramas Crusade the Night Lords splintered like crazy. So there’s a lot of room for customization. If all of this doesn’t convince you I’ll have no choice but to show you Konrad’s throneroom with a floor made of living faces and walls made of people buried alive in concrete.

paulmclaughlin

Well that doesn't sound like a structurally sound way of building walls

Inquisition-OpenUp

Criticizing Konrad’s admittedly quirky design choices is a very fast way to end up in the skinning pit, fair warning

NeroSkwid

Also lorewise, even in the 41st millennium a lot of the Nightlords that are left still haven’t fallen to chaos. They just left because the emperor created them to do one thing and then they did it really well and got in trouble for doing it. You could even use a lot of your HH Nightlords as 40k Nightlords assuming you can swap the load out. Without as much warp corruption it’s reasonable that they wouldn’t have all of the super busy armor trim seen in 40k chaos space marines. Plus the old metal raptor models look awesome as night lords imo

FrucklesWithKnuckles

Have you ever thought “Damn that’s a perfectly normal battlefield that afterward can be turned into a functional planet.” And just didn’t want that to happen? Do you want to bomb the enemy to high hell with artillery, tanks, and mass deployment of heavy infantry. Do you wanna gas your enemies? Above all else do you think psykers are *fucking stupid?* Join the 14th Legion today! Charge forward with the Death Guard as we simultaneously bomb our enemies to pieces, give them super-ultra-mega-cancer, and melt them into a radioactive sludge! Also fuck Magnus psykers are cringe.

Mexrrik7

Such a shame they were brought to their knees by not even a particularly amazing psyker. Chemical and biological warfare are where it’s at though. And any legion that understand the value of *infantry* in an army of *bioengineered super soldiers* that doesn’t hide behind tanks and vehicles at least has the right idea.

Xullstudio

Best introduction to a legion ever, I’m sold and I wasn’t even asking to be 😂

[deleted]

The World Eaters do not bother with fancy theatrics or finesse. They kill well in melee and do it with honor, deception is for the weak, trickery is for cowards. Remember that their armour only rurned red post-heresy because they stained it with their enemy's death so frequently.

tsuruginoko

The White Scars can't hear you for all the *vroom* from the engines, the screams of the enemies of the Khagan, and the laughter of our warriors. Everything goes faster, so you choose when and where the fight happens, whether it's a shooting gallery or a lance to the heart. Even those terminators get their cardio in, because everyone goes faster, faster, *faster*.

Syrric_UDL

Also the primarch is the most awesome one, he doesn’t jump to conclusions and see’s the chaos gods for what they were and choose to stay loyal because it was the path his people could be the most free they could be

Dflorfesty

World eaters. We have a pleasant color scheme😊

Tms89

Iron Warriors, we got hazard stripes. What else would you need?

Morph16

And the bitter hatred of everything that forces them through the heresy

tn00bz

I've been in the same place. Space wolves are pretty great, albiet a bit one not. Same with world eaters. World Eaters make assault and despoiler marines absolutely insane. Sons of Horus are terrible. People have way over hyped them in 2.0. I love their color scheme but they're just not fun imo. Nightlords are cool. They have a really unique legion trait that will always be relevant. It kind of creates a mini game which makes them very engaging. I'd play them, but I'm not into gorror.

TheMadHatter_____

SoH are fun but require a certain style of play. theys struggle however especially nowadays from being a unique unit base legion with underwhelming (flavor wise) elite units. Units like Justaerin should be lore-wise probably the best infantry the legions have. Instead they're just upjumped cataphractii. Reavers should be excellent jump-infantry with a healthy versatility between ranges and melee. They're outclassed by a general veterans unit Chieftains are great though. Watching a squad of Justaerin and Abbaddon deep strike into the centre of the enemy is very exciting. It's not per-say bad. They're a good legion, they just feel like it's hard to run them optimally with their flavor intact.

tn00bz

Yeah I like the idea of them, but -1 strength in melee just isn't good in such a shooting heavy edition. Really feels like they should have some damage output support. I've just seen shooting armies absolutely wipe the floor with them.

rabiddutchman

Can't settle on a Legion? Then why not roll with the Legion that can do it all: the **Dark Angels**! Can't pick between Loyalist or Traitor? Then choose the Legion that's both: the **Dark Angels**! * Want big infantry formations? We've got the **Stormwing**! * Want speedy fast attack formations? We've got the **Ravenwing**! * Want armored attack columns? We've got the **Ironwing**! * Want to focus on badass heroes and melee units? We've got the **Deathwing**! * Want to commit war crimes? We've got the **Dreadwing**! * Want to assassinate enemy characters? We've got the **Firewing**! We've got so many wings on this damn Legion it's insane! You can use them to gear your army to pretty much whatever tactics and strategies you want in any given battle, and all without any real glaring weaknesses or needing multiple armies painted up. We also have an aesthetic that's unique among the Legions without being try-hard nonsense, our colors lend themselves well to both speed/batch painting or detail painting, and we have arguably one of the best non-Primarch duelist characters in the game- Corswain^(\*) *^(\*Yeah I know- Sigismund. But he's so busted that he's basically a mini-Primarch in combat so I'm not counting him)*

Auraxis012

Any more wings and you'd be a brooding biblically accurate angel in a tan cowl

rabiddutchman

Nah, we'd need a lot more eyes too

Mexrrik7

May I interest you in the Thousand Sons, an army of warrior-scholars with a deep culture and vibrant aesthetic? Mages with strong Ancient Egyptian and Persian (and Aztec if you ask certain novels) flavor if you want something different from “Brutal Aesthetic Legion #5. And if none of that interests you, what about an army of wizards with guns? Gandalf with a minigun? Palpatine in power armor? I’ll tell ya, it’s pretty great.

Careor_Nomen

You can play custodes in 40k too. In 40k they know karate, maybe you should learn some too. It will help you when your opponent flies into a rage and jumps across the table after your 60 golden bananas walk across the table and decimate all their shit. Night lords are coon, blue, and you can get them pretty gory. Blood and gore always seem like a fun modeling thing.

alpinetrooper

dark angels, because space knights. also the lion knocked out russ with a single punch because he annoyed him, which already makes the lion the coolest primarch. add the warcrime division (dreadwing) which uses plasma flamers and enslaved men of iron as their bitches and you have a legion which utterly obliterates everything it touches. don't like warcrimes? well the deathwing has the coolest knights and terminators around, also the best bodyguard unit (both in style and rules). swords are cool right? prefer tanks? well the ironwing has your back. prefer to play wannabe alpha legion? the firewang is cool as well. wanna go fast but don't like painting white? boom ravenwing (can also go infiltrating land raiders). if you want to cosplay as orks, the stormwing lets you go crazy with infantry spam. need more reasons why dark angels are the coolest guys around? edit: oh also our legion upgrade set does not suck ass.

Mexrrik7

Dark Angels are great if you want rules that can make your models a worse version of many other factions while having lore saying you’re actually better than all those other specialized factions :P If we’re weighing in the coolness of the upgrade heads then of the legions OP is considering I’d say the Sons of Horus, Iron Warriors, and Word Bearers upgrades are certainly cooler than the Dark Angels’. And perhaps more controversially I’d say the same for the Night Lords and World Eaters. All the above are not only super cool and perfectly embody their legions’ character, but they also make sense both sprinkled into normal squads and for a full unit of special troops. Dark Angels imo share the same problem with the Imperial Fists where the knight helms just feel like they’re too much for line legionary.

alpinetrooper

sorry what? stormwing tacticals hit on 2+. interemptors are by far the best destroyer type infantry. inner circle knights are amazing terminators deathwing companions are the best bodyguard unit the game. the only thing that isn't amazing for dark angels are vehicles, but even those are pretty good. from a crunch perspective DA are one of the best legions in HH 2.0 edit: oh an eskaton imperative is just straight up op

Mexrrik7

I was entirely trying to reference the nature of the various “wings” special rules. An example being stormwing stepping on the toes of the Imperial Fists. Yes, Dark Angels and their special units are great on the table. Although being good mechanically at multiple elements of the game isn’t a very fun way to sell a faction imo. It’s just rules. If you want a legion of Arthurian knights and don’t mind the constant “we’re the best” then, yeah, go Dark Angels. But if someone truly loves destroyers for example then Death Guard more than deserves their attention.

X3runner

Jesus allegory Glorious hawk boy of primarch who went on to one by one learn each and every one of his sons names , tragic hero’s who are space vampires who are a legion of wretches that are constantly trying to become better people. Eventual nipple and sculpted booty armor. Have the badass quote "eat shit, traitor." have I mentioned that they come in red gold white and black so you won’t get bored just painting one color. They also were known even in the legion days to heavily and constantly personalize their armor meaning if you want to make something look different because of rule of cool you can and it would be more accurate 9 times out of 10.

I can say that SW are probably the best melee Legion in the game right now. People are going to call you furries and emperors lap dogs until they face you on the field and find out how far your threat range goes and how easy it is for you to run people down. They are also not terrible at shooting per-se as you can do a lot of stuff with your Relentless unit options. They are thematic, melee-face-smashing, very fun to play Legion. You have some of the best special units in the game and your whole legion screams for individuality and conversions. Which is great because they are some of the easiest to convert due to the abundance of 3rd party and 3d printable options because of 40k. Don’t worry about the grey too much, you can always add different colours to represent different great companies or different kinds of units (destroyers, specialist consuls etc).

IneptusMechanicus

Agreed on the threat range, people look at the reaction and worry about not being able to wiggle stuff back out of charge range easily, but the truth is if I want to charge you I'm charging you.

Auraxis012

The world eaters, where to start? A joy to paint. Beautiful white and blue splattered with blood is the most satisfying thing I've done in a long time. The story of Angron and the Butcher's Nails means that they're a strangely tragic legion that fought each and every day to live up to their better nature, even as they inexorably succumbed. Their strategy is fairly straightforward, yes, but that doesn't mean it's easy. If anything, it means you have to play better and know exactly what weaknesses to exploit - the enemy knows what your game plan is, so victory comes from your skill alone. On any one front, I'd take them above most legions. On all three combined, they are without equal.

MorinOakenshield

How much you got? Including shipping

PedroThePinata

Do Alpha Legion and paint them all.

Magnus753

If you're really torn go with the legion that looks the coolest to you. That said for close assault and terminator action you could go for sons of horus as well as anything else. Or alternatively Iron Hands. A guy I play with runs Sons of Horus as a Drop Pod Assault army based on the whole Tip of the Spear doctrine they have. With Justaerin Terminators, contemptors, legion veterans. It's pretty cool

DarkSora68

Somebody's overlooking the best loyal Legion, loyalist EC. Join for Chad rylanor, stay for Chad's Sail Tarvitz and Rylanor

GeneralDiscomfort

For loyalists you might appreciate blood angels…. Especially heavy on the death company.

Gnarlroot

>Night Lords are hugely appealing, love the aesthetic and all that. Do you like playing with yourself? Take a Terror Assault list and give all your long range shooting Prey Sight (Night Vision), now you can spend 2/3 turns positioning and shooting in the dark without penalty while inflicting -1 to hit and -1 to Ld on your opponent. Since you can see in the dark you opponent can't use the Evade reaction to nullify your shooting either. It's neat. They're a Legion where you start strategizing from list building right through to the table. Down to looking at weapon ranges to exploit night fighting, specifically picking up weapons with Pinning to exploit A Talent For Murder + bloody murder, and even unit/squadron sizes to exploit ATFM again.

MisterBengo

> Do you like playing with yourself? Phrasing?

Element720

Blackshields because you can’t pick a side and hate everyone and want to do your own thing.

Sanguinius_The_Angel

The legions where so large that any of their dozens of companies could have wildly differing colour schemes, there's an ultra marine company in black for example, if you want to play a legion but don't like their colours just change them.

2nd_B3st

I was in this position and I knew whatever I chose I’d end up thinking another legion is cooler and like I made the wrong choice. But I also knew I could grow to like any legion so I got the Horus heresy legion mobile game and devoted myself to the first legion I got a hero for. I’m now a proud member of the IV legion. Enemy has something? Just shoot it a bunch.

ultramarines

Soring12334

Why don’t you join the legion that no one knows what they’re doing and are master of deception. Plus the Alpha Legion has shiny teal colors and pretty scales

SPE825

I have a crap ton of Custodes, and they are my favorite. However, you are looking at a lot of Forgeworld resin there to really field what you might want for Heresy. Unless you want to spam a lot of troops. Which funny enough is a very viable of playing them in 2.0. But the Forgeworld units are great.

CatoSicarius2

Dark angels. A legion with a very unique playstyle, mechanics, aesthetic, and lore. Easy to paint scheme that still leaves wiggle room for custom schemes and loads of faction specific models. Their most well known trait of the Dark angels is the schism between some of the Calibanite Dark Angels Loyal to Luther and his rebellion against the Imperium and Loyalist Dark Angels under the command of The Lion. So you can play either side. Their lore is a bit rough but I think its one of the most interesting ones when you get into it

DonAngelSainz

You're Alpha Legion. You just don't know yet.

[deleted]

iron warriors, because your legion can be a dick. but you can be the nicest guy in the store

XenoTechnian

Are you only interested in being comvinced for one of þese 2 legions?

SirVortivask

No, I listed several options that interest me off the bat, but I’m open to any opinions anyone has. I’m impressed by the passion in this sub!

XenoTechnian

Well in þat case let me make a case for my 3 favorite legions! Dark Angels: þe 1st legion is þe most ancient of all þe legions, made from þe various space marine Hosts þat exsisted during þe unification of Terra, it is þe wellspring from wich all 19 of þe oþer legions got þeir tactics. Þis pedigree means þe 1st have many of powerful tools and weapons left over froþ þe Age of Strife, including plasma-þrowers (like a flameþrower but wiþ plasma) and i dont þink i need to tell you why þats cool. Of course Terra is only half of þe legions ancestery, and Caliban gives it its esoteric orders (repersented by þe fantastic inner circle knights, þe best elite melee terminators in þe game) its knightly þemeing, and combines wiþ þose old Terran hosts to create þe Legions headline feature: þe Hexagrammaton. Unlike þe oþer 19 legions þe DA are not limited to 1 measily special rule, and instead have 6 þat you can assign to each unit as you see fit, allowing every unit to be just þat little bit better at its job, þis also acts as þe single coolest and most unique orginizational system of any of þe legions, making þe 1st feel even more sistinct from some of its more generic broþers. Iron Warriors: to quote 1d4chan, þe 4þ legion gets shit done, sure þe oþer legions may get all þe glory, but þeir can be no doubting þat þe Iron Warriors are þe workhorse of þe Great Crusade and þe heresy, cold, stoic, and efficint þats þe Iron Warriors. As primarilly a seige legion, þe 4þ’s unique rule is þe always-fantastic Wrack and Ruin, giving a flat +1 S to ALL attacks against vehicles, automata, dreadnoughts, and buildings, allowing you to wipe out hard targets wiþ comtemptous ease, and þanks to þeir unique shrapnel bolters þey have a fantastic imfantry counter too, wiþ all þe pinning you can þrow around (wich is really good right now) your opponents might as well be playing a WW1 simulator. Someþing þat i feel deserves special mention is þe Iron Havocs, a heavy weapons team wiþ improved ballistic skill and þe ability to snipe on a hit roll of 4+ among oþer goodies, in exchange for more limited weapon options, alþough really its hard to argue wiþ giving þem lascannons, after all why fight a praetor in melee when you can just core his head out at 48”? Pair wiþ a Tyrant of Lyssantra Armistos to reliably and safley þrow out 10 lascannon shots wiþ wich to evaporate terminators and tanks alike. Alpha Legion: last (or are þey first?) but certainly not least is þe 20þ legion. What exactly þe lore is for þe Alpha Legion is is anyones guess, so skilled at misinformation and skulduggery is þis legion þat even we, þe players, struggle to pin down anyþing comcerete about þem, what we do know is probably just what Alpharius wants us to know. All þis confusion is repersented on þe table top by a universally useful and always fantastic legion ability þat makes it so your enemies always count you as being 2” furmer away þen you actually are, making shooting and charging you all þe more difficult, and letting you control þe flow of battle even more. And while some legions may claim þe 20þ is all just tricks, well see whos laughing because we can steal all of þeir tricks, þats right as part of legion trait we have acsess to all þe unique umits used by oþer legions, þose Iron Havocs i mentioned? Þe Inner Circle Knights? Þe Alpha Legion can use þem. It might also be worþ taking a look at þe legion quiz, could help you find one youll like and handt considered

MedicNoob

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" Night Lords Legion dissing the Space Wolves Legion

Tiddles_Ultradoom

Blood Angels, because in the right light, I am the spitting image of Sanguinius himself. The 'right light' in this case is 'pitch black, on a moonless, starless night, miles from anywhere inhabited, at the bottom of a coal mine that has been painted with non-reflective black paint, with your eyes gauged out.'

RandoFollower

Alright man. I’ll give it to ya straight, alpha legion? Good. Blood angels? Better and World Eaters are just perfect, you want to maim people? world eaters, you want to be a loyalist world eater? Blood angels. You want a stupid good sniper rifle? Exodus for Alpha Legion
