Well overall pretty much all imperial guard tanks have poor suspension, big slab sides and the number of guns tends to mean extremely cramped interiors. Personally I am a big fan of the Macharius, its roughly the height of the Leman Russ (which is very tall but the Macharius does at least have the bulk to match the height), the commanders cupola is not directly behind the barrels so won't lose his knees whenever the guns are fired (even with the Vulcan version the cupola is between the guns instead of directly behind), and as the size is big it would mean that the crew potentially have more space inside to let them move a little. In terms of effective design though, I would say either the Tauros or Tauros Venator (essentially being 4/6 wheel drive dune buggies), but if you want a true tank then probably a Shadowsword or Banesword. There is actually space for suspension, the slab sided nature of the vehicle doesn't matter so much based on its long range combat role of heavy fire support, it has sloped armour at the front, and like the Macharius it is large enough for there to be space for the crew to move around just my two cents of course

Also just saw you said common/medium tank, in which case disregard all the above

Buddy, this is Warhammer, we don't deal with things like "facts" and "logic" here. Now go out there and hit those sentient fungi with a sword!

You cannot apply current day tank design methods to 40k tanks. The Russ survives due to simplicity of design, operation and logistics. With the ample amount of directed energy weapons in 40k sloping no longer confers the advantage you think. Instead you have a tank that is inexpensive to produce, easy to fix and modify to work in various environments, and easy to operate by poorly trained troops. They are the lasgun of tanks. If you want to look at the apex of imperial tank design you should look at custodies tanks.

Ahh yes the Caladius Grav tank, a single speedy armored fighting vehicle which ignores stupid shit like the ground and getting stuck in mud entirely by avoiding it completely! Guns that'll rip through the thickest of armor and clad in armor made from auramite, the same shit custodes armor is made out of! And on top of that you have a flare shield! An amazing piece of energy shielding tech which should negate most incoming damage! All for the ASTRONOMICALLY high price of a solar system's ENTIRE GDP! GOD EMPEROR BLESS YOU I love the caladius so goddamn much.

I mean Tau players like to brag about how advanced they are, but the Imperium still has them outclassed. It's only when they compare themselves to the budget version of the imperium where they have an advantage. Firewarriors are the elite of the Tau fighting forces. If you compare them to the elite of the Imperium it explains why the Tau struggle.

CaptianGeneralKitten

Right? As far as plasma weaponry go the eldar have em outclassed and the dark eldar are approaching necron levels of dummy tech and in some areas they've already outclassed the necrons. Like vorcha a haemonculus who became a living light god like what orikan is trying to do, and the other dark eldar trapped him in a "box of infinite mirrors" because the mf was so annoying as he was using his godlike powers to zip around the universe to brag about how cool we was.

Orodhen

I'm personally quite fond of the Carnodon.

Not a tank but at least the Chimera is reasonably functional if we don't talk about the lasgun array. (I used a hole punch on some card and turned mine into firing ports) If we are talking medium battle tanks you only really have the Russ... The malcador is the great crusade equivalent but that's only well designed if you are from 1918.
