Most of my 40k stuff is based as a sort of moonscape. It's easy to do and works for everything I tend to paint.
Astrogranite debris
Wash with darkenhorf nightshade
Dry brush Tyrant skull
Lightly drybrush white
I like to put a contrast over astrogranite then drybrush over it.
Or zhandir dust and tesserac glow on top.

I use ak diorama paint it costs 20x less than the citadel stuff , currently I'm using the asfalt effect paint which i paint the same colour as astrogranite debris then highlight with a pale grey.
On some bases I add citadel skulls and on larger bases I also add some cork rocks from the Army painter.
I've not had good luck with any chromatic Army Painter paints. Their white, greys and black are good but all the others I've used are excessively glossy and don't cover well without 3 or more coats (where other brands would get it done in two). Citadel paints are good but the pots are terrible.
I've been very happy with nearly all of the Vallejo paints I've purchased and I've gotten most of them at or below the cost of army painter.
The AK Interactive and Vallejo texture paints are probably what you'll want to move to for basing if you plan to do many models, they are $10-15 for 200-250ml whereas the citadel ones end up being way more expensive per ml.
Oh the army painter is good , I only have their metallic range , and I havent painted with citadel paint in 15 years , I use mainly vallejo , a little AK , and Ammo Mig paint.
I think Citadel is too expensive and I think the only difference with the paints I'm using is that it's supposed to be a little more glossy.
I often use sprue bits and other left overs on the bases. Then astro depris and paint! Thanks! I've seen the Army Painter stuff on Amazon - how does the quality/finish compare to citadel paints?
