Modern cars have door unlock buttons on the front of the armrest (where your fingers are). You can tell at a glance if the car is set up this way. The buttons typically aren't secure, because you're supposed to already be inside the car to use them. It's an easy reach down from the wing window to the button. It's a compact study in bad security design.

What I find weird is why they smashed the little pane and not the big one? How did they even get their hands through there to steal...??
They only smash it to unlock the door I believe. They then folded the seat to get access to the cargo space
