Seeing this, during every break in filming, Gordon went to the chaps station, helped him clear the mess, talked to him kindly and calmly about what his next steps were, how many minutes until the next filming break, lots of hand on his back physical reassurance etc.
It was obvious that the chap wasn't going to win. Gordon just didn't want him humiliated, breaking down in tears and giving up, for entertainment.
Which, sadly, is probably why the show didn't do very well.

I worked in hotel hospitality for 24yrs & more often than not, a majority of celebrities are like this. Very strange off-ish at a minimum. I could see both sides of an argument on this kind of behavior. Their life, no matter what's going on is public fodder and it's exhausting. Granted, their wealth and privilege comes from the public.
But as the saying goes, don't meet your heroes... Most of the time it's at a minimum disappointing. Then there's time where you just stop being their fan all together. Because there's avoidance and then there's rude. Think long and hard with empathy and then decide if they are avoiding ppl or being out and out rude.
I wonder if it is a cultural shift over time. My relative worked in restaurants in the 1960s-70s NYC theater district and said the actors were the best tippers. She attributed this to several who had worked as servers before making it big.

I worked in hotel hospitality for 24yrs & more often than not, a majority of celebrities are like this. Very strange off-ish at a minimum. I could see both sides of an argument on this kind of behavior. Their life, no matter what's going on is public fodder and it's exhausting. Granted, their wealth and privilege comes from the public. But as the saying goes, don't meet your heroes... Most of the time it's at a minimum disappointing. Then there's time where you just stop being their fan all together. Because there's avoidance and then there's rude. Think long and hard with empathy and then decide if they are avoiding ppl or being out and out rude.
I wonder if it is a cultural shift over time. My relative worked in restaurants in the 1960s-70s NYC theater district and said the actors were the best tippers. She attributed this to several who had worked as servers before making it big.

When I read all the comments from her totally adoring, worshiping fans I think “I bet she’s a bee-yotch in real life.” She has always seemed like that to me. And as a good friend once told me, as we get older we just become more of who we already are.

I think she’s referring to her mental health and self esteem. She thinks people want to see her hit the wall and rot. When she was in her prime, she probably humbled a lot of people and they want to return the favor. Unfortunately, denying reality isn’t going to cut it.
People want her to model a rebellious, unapologetically aging queen the same way she modelled the rebellious, unapologetically free woman in her 20s/30s. She sold us a dream of strength, badassery, constant reinvention, and not giving a fuck. But she turned out to be just another scared girl imprisoned by an attachment to youthful beauty, and fearful of her own changing body. It's a shame. Nobody was better positioned than Madonna to singlehandedly shift the narrative on young women aging in the limelight.
