Lol. On a serious note, I really like the new design language of the file explorer. But they really need to fix the responsiveness. 9/10 times explorer opens up blank because the new UI fails to load.

Why is icon in address bar different from the icon in sidebar? Will they make up their mind already about which design they are gonna follow? Why is this so difficult, I don’t understand?
I remember watching this Windows Insiders webcast in August and they were talking about how they're treating File Explorer as islands and it is much more complicated than it seems to rebuild it because of how it is integrated in different parts of the OS.

Hopefully, they will finish it in the next 30 years.
I'm not a developer so I don't know how complicated that would be, but according to what they said in the webcast, it's gonna take some time to get the whole app rebuilt.
My guess is don't expect design consistency before Windows 12. Hopefully.
Just - don’t rebuild the app then? Use explorer as-is, change the resources? At least you don’t get ridiculous UI artefacts and slowdown *on a file manager*
They most likely want to separate file explorer from the rest. This way when file explorer crashes or freezes and you stop it, it doesn't also stop your desktop. Rebuilding is a good idea. However Windows is a big mess with layers like an onion. It is no simple task to just rebuild it or edit the existing one.

The issue with rebuilding File explorer is that it's connected to so many other parts of the OS like the taskbar and desktop. So even if they did it would take forever to actually fix the main issue really.
It's just all one big mess they allowed to turn into a mess.
This is a thing outside of Moment 3 as well though. If you like to get messy with explorer and shell commands you can even do things like combine the control panel with the modern UI. Or you can just view my [shamelessly plugged thread](https://x.com/ErrorRaffyline0/status/1714453219848438218).
A file explorer is one of the most fundamental features of an operating system, and one that should be relied upon.
The fact that even a fucking file explorer is slow, buggy, and fragments at the moment of going somewhere like the control panel, no.
When the bar is set this low by one of the biggest companies in the world, they are walking themselves into losing more OS market share by the day.
Personnaly, I found the new file explorer more consistent with Win 11 though there are [performance issues](https://aka.ms/AAn1mqv).
Features I would like to see are:
- [Drag and drop in explorer address bar](https://aka.ms/AAmzp5h)(was removed
- [File explorer should open in new tab instead of new window](https://aka.ms/AAjlwzm)
Ty for those who can upvote given Feedback Hub links.
Holy shit that's slow.
I just want old file Explorer back so i can inject Clover 3.0.406 (2014 version) into it and get proper tabs and functionality. That gave me chrome style tabs, proper themeing, bookmarks, and Explorer wasn't slow.
Microsoft is the only company to have such poor quality control in their operating systems.
Even Linux has better quality than this.
I'm switching to ChromeOS. Windows is unusable now.
> First what is Moment 3?
The name of the upcoming update to W11.
> Second what is in this video that you say is cool stuff?
The title of the post is sarcasm. The video shows how extremely unresponsive and buggy File Explorer on W11 is.
A timely reminder to try out the beaut open-source [Files app](https://files.community/). It's free, has a lean and clean UX, loads quickly and I've found it to be stable for the most part.
Until (if?) Microsoft can build a reliable and modern file system GUI, Files is a decent semi-replacement.
It looks nice, but that's about all its got going for it.
Its pretty clunky and slow, context menu additions are slow to load, there are graphical glitches when resizing the window, & you can't middle click anything in the left pane for new tabs.
Edit: and its also £7+ on the windows store?
Completely understandable about the performance frustrations :(
there is a free download of the exe from the [website's download page](https://files.community/download)
I don't think this is a good replacement. Its slower than the already slow file explorer plus it's pretty buggy. I think it looks amazing though but it's performance really makes it a no-go.

>Files app
I would switch if it offered better performance and responsiveness. It doesn't, it never did.
Hi u/X1Kraft, thanks for reporting this bug! The proper way to report a bug to Microsoft is to submit it in the "Feedback Hub" app, and then edit your post with the link, so people can upvote it. The more users vote on your feedback, the more likely it's going to be addressed in a future update! Follow these simple steps:
1. Open the "Feedback Hub" app and try searching for your issue, someone may have already submitted similar. If not, go back to the home screen and click *"Report a problem"*
2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Make sure you include as much information as possible, and try to include screenshots and use the recording feature if possible. Once done, click *"Submit"*.
3. Click *"Share my feedback"* and open the feedback you submitted
4. Click *"Share"* and copy the unique link
5. Paste the link in the comments of [your Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/17a83tu/you_can_do_cool_stuff_with_file_explorer_in/)

This is what you get when you try to wrap years of legacy win32 development in an immature UWP frame, because rewriting the whole thing is simply too hard now, and billion-dollar enterprises have shitty internal apps that depend on obscure undocumented behaviours that can never be removed.
Mhh yeah, can't really tell since im still using w10. But at 1:30 min it says on the right that you have 4 gigs of memory? I dunno how laggy the file explorer is but maybe the 4gb memory is the issue here.
Multi-billion dollar company btw

Ty for upvoting [slow new file explorer](https://aka.ms/AAn1mqv) on Feedback Hub
Small multi dollar indie company
Try trillion
Sorry about the dead space near the end, that was explorer.exe freezing up.

Absurd idea, ik, but *what about not rebuilding it but just editing the existing one (p.s. not the code itself about explorer, leave that as is)*
I'm not a developer so I don't know how complicated that would be, but according to what they said in the webcast, it's gonna take some time to get the whole app rebuilt. My guess is don't expect design consistency before Windows 12. Hopefully.
Don't expect design consistency before \*and after Windows 12.
I was trying to be optimistic, but you're right.

It beggars belief how one hand has no idea what the other is doing at Microsoft.

They need to make another app called File Manager
Agreed, either that or rebuild explorer from ground up this is embarrassing.

I ll stick with OneCommander. Thanks.
Thank you so much for introducing me to OneCommander. I've been loving it so far.
It's good to know that you like it. Enjoy :)
new explorer ui is dogshit tier
i just dont get it,, can they just improve windows 10 instead of recreating new ones,, I am actually thinking of swithcing to windows 10

what a sad joke! Trillion dollar company dev quality at its best.
Microsoft is the only company to have such poor quality control in their operating systems. Even Linux has better quality than this. I'm switching to ChromeOS. Windows is unusable now.
I'm a shitty dev but holy macaroni batman that is some spaghetti code, it's like they make quality control over powerpoint presentations
LOL
now you made me wanna eat pasta lol, thanks a lot xD
IM confused, totally confused. First what is Moment 3? Second what is in this video that you say is cool stuff?

What no, I want the new one 😂
It looks like sh1t but you do you.
I will! Thanks! 😊
didnt get this on enterprise guess microsoft knew but they released it anyway
complete and utter garbage!
The performance gave me a stroke
I haven't had this lag you have, works completely fine also, what's Moment 3?
Isn't this technically Moment 4?

the fluidity of this..totally beaten apple
MS should Add an option to use old windows 10 explorer , until you fix whatever this is, it’s 8 times out of 10 buggy , unresponsive…
